Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Collector's Edition revealed, releasing August 27th

Ahhhhhhh I'm so excited for this. By far the game I'm most excited for. Will be playing on PS3. Hope to get into the beta since I typed in my FFXIII code when the registration first came up. Amazon sent me an early access code... don't know what it does or what that even means LOL.

Interesting. So is the beta the full game? Or will the full game be up for download on PSN a week early for this code?

Beta and full game are separated. After the last phase of the Beta finishes and the release date is near, the full game will be available for download to the people who preordered and got the early access code. At least according to the official site, that is.

I assume it will be like most "head-start" in MMO's where a week or so prior to release, the client will recognize your account as playable [after entering the code online to update your account with the pre-order bonuses] and allow you to log-in/play. When release day hits, the account will once again be deactivated until you enter the serial key that comes with the purchase of FFXIV [either Physical or Digital]. Then, after you do-so, you can continue playing with the character you started during the head-start.

They'll likely give you a few additional days after release before activating your head-start, in-case you ordered online and it takes time to reach you. For instance, the head-start could run from August 23rd to August 30th.

Edit - If you're referring to the PS3 version [and you don't get into the beta to download the client before release], I'm sure they'll have that option available to you once head-start begins [likely via email with a product code that you'll enter on the Playstation Store].

Cool! Thanks for the info! Last question, should I register a Squeenix account now, or wait until the game prompts me to do so?

If you want to try open beta which will act like early access as they have said they plan to keep progress from open beta you should make an account now and sign up for beta.

You're very welcome!

As for the Square Enix account, you might as well do-so now.

If you're interested in the head-start [or any of the beta events] you'll need that account, so I'll be saving yourself a lot of time by getting that process out of the way early on.

I like the Final Fantasy series but hated XI's insane grinding and expensive items. Do you guys think I will enjoy this version?

Yes. This game has people like you specifically in its crosshairs.
How is it supposed to be for people who want a more FF (like IV-IX) experience but online with other people? Doubt it's particularly close and it does sound more enjoyable regardless, but I'm wondering if it goes beyond just fan service.

Story-wise, I think FFXI and XIV are the most "Final Fantasy" Final Fantasy games in quite some time.

Their stories are actually typically a lot better than the single player games, too.

And a lot of the content you'll be able to do yourself - mostly you'll only need others to help with story bosses and the like.

I was thinking gameplay, but I'm not really expecting much there that wasn't already addressed (faster paced, and given the direction later FFXI apparently went in I have to assume also easier to solo), though it'd be good to know if exploration really is good. Still, I think for literally "MMOJRPG" I'd have to hold out for DQX anyway.

... Though the story point, I have to admit it IS a draw of the CE to gather that together for me to watch, if I'm remembering the bonuses right.

Gameplay-wise, the closest thing I think it could be compared to would be playing XII without a party and without Gambits, and with a huge emphasis on quests.

Obviously you're going to get more done if you party up - even just duoing with someone will make the game a lot more fun. In fact, I think duo/trio is my favorite way to play - any more than that and things can get complicated.

Hmm, that's right. Are the quests going to be more story focused on average, or just collecting materials? I expect a lot of that anyway being an MMO that needs a lot of content, but more story within the toss away quests would be nice.

And yeah, doable solo but better in multiplayer's fine, I just don't want it to be IMPOSSIBLE or nigh impossible solo.

There are a lot of story-oriented missions, and they come in two tracks: the main scenario and the Grand Company scenario.

There are a lot more "kill X things" quests, of course, but they're all designed to lead you to the next thing and keep you progressing and finding new stuff.

There's also the hunting log, which is just a list of things to kill that give you rewards when you clear a target.

I'm guessing the Grand Company scenarios are a lot like the nation-based storylines from XI? Windurst's story was great.

A lot of the killing and collecting quests have a good bit of dialogue that gives you information about the area and the people that live in it. I enjoyed reading it personally. I'm generally bad to skip dialogue in games like this, but the chat bubble format for the text really helps me with paying attention. In other games when I see a wall of text in a quest log, I tend to skip reading it.

They've tried to fit in as much lore as possible into even the simple quests.

In 1.0 was it possible to do all 3 grand company storylines?

I'm still stuck deciding on a home nation but it would be good to know if we could swap like in FFXI.

Well, at worst I'd like to have gotten every FF at least for awhile, so that's good for me. The original XIV will be the exception, but that effectively doesn't exist now anyway.

Yeah - they each have their own storylines, with some overlapping battles, etc. Grand company progression also sometimes gates main scenario progression, too.

As you rank up and do things for your Grand Company you'll earn Seals, which you can use to buy gear, chocobo barding, etc. too.

In 1.0 you couldn't change Grand Companies. They made you do stuff for all of them and see speeches by the GC leaders before you could decide, so that you at least knew what you were getting into - I think a lot of people picked based on the personality of the leader.

It sounds like changing may be possible in 2.0, but I'm sure there'd be a cost associated with it.

I have a quick question... if I start playing FFXIV on the PS3 will I be able to transfer my characters to the PS4?

Yes. You would need another copy of the game but you can log in under your account details on any system: PC, PS4, PS3. FFXI had this already.

Must not buy....must resist...

To clarify, CE 1.0 players will not have access to early access, but they'll get the in-game items for free?

Would we be able to buy the digital copy for $29.99 and add it to our current account, so that we could get into early access and not lose our legacy characters?

Yes and Yes.

The Pre-order bonus is an additional code.

Beware the pre-order bonus doesn't apply to the CE upgrade and Standard 1.0 users can't apply a CE ARR code to their existing account. (yes its really complicated, it's SE)

So if you have an old XIV account and buy the new CE edition, you can't actually get the items on your account? Eeeeeh? That confuses me.

I'm going to have to create a completely new SE account?

If you have an old 1.0 account and want the in game 2.0 CE items you can uggrade your account when the game launches. If you want the physical items you'll have to purchase a CE.

You can't buy a CE for the PC and use it on your 1.0 account.

EDIT: Hope this helps?

Thank you so much. I guess.. I guess I'll just have to make an entirely new account then. I don't want to pay for the same content twice. s_s
