I wouldn't worry about ilvl.

Go to the Wolves Den Pier and activate PvP hotbar switching first, then take a look at the PvP exclusive abilities you have. You'll want to create new hotbar setups for PvP because some abilities are going to be way more useful in there and you'll want ready access to them. My NIN setup for PvP looks nothing like my PvE setup for instance. Unless you're part of that ultra badass Gilgamesh PvP LS that rides into battle on that one mechanical flying sailboat mount, I wouldn't worry about going super hard on strategy. For your first few games, just stay with the crowds and try not to get isolated either because you chase one person down or because you've strayed too far from the action.

I actually really enjoy the PvP in this game even though it's not as good as in other MMOs (DCUO for instance). Plus, the music is pretty awesome.

Thanks!

Can I start farming wolf marks now or do I have to wait for the event to formally start?

If GARO event items will be a simple wolf mark exchange instead of some limited time currency/tokens/whatever (did they announce the details?), you can farm marks now.
That said, at least on my server, Frontline waiting times are currently pretty bad, but the situation should get better after the next patch removing GC restrictions for that mode.

Cool, thanks. I'll wait for the patch then. Here's hoping it drops soon.

My sub lapsed about a month ago but I'll be back for /glasses and I think I might have to actually start PvPing for that gear because god damn. Is it a limited time event or will that gear be there for good?

Limited time event but it'll last like 3 months.

I have to hurry up finishing ARR and HW, so I won't miss out on any events, equipment, items, glamour, minions or mounts. But if I hurry like that, then it becomes a chore.

Almost every event is open to characters of all levels. Only the Youkai one was a bit different because you had to do fates, and this Garo one might be like that. But there will probably be a way to get some stuff even at low levels.

So got ARR today off PSN cus the ARR+HW bundle was reduced to just £21.99!

What do I need to know before going into the game?

Do I need to read up on the FFXIV 1.0 story?

I'm like ilvl135 at the moment

I checked the market for ilvl250 gear, FUCK THAT!
Absurd pricing
It would cost me roughly 10 million gil easily just to buy everything, this is before materia melding
That would be like another 2-3 mil

So roughly 12-15mil to get to ilvl250+

There has to be a better quick way

Im getting the ilvl255 PotD WAR weapon soon, I have +75Weapon and +45Armor, so closing in
I don't understand why the hell there is 4 different tomes

Poetics - I think I don't really need these, up to 1500
Esoterics - Have no clue where you get these, never earned any yet
Lore - I'm guessing this is what I want for ilvl 230 gear and can keep earning this, earned 120 so far
Scripture - This is ilvl270 gear I'm guessing, so the highest tier, locked out at 450/week

Ugh, just trying to at least do all MSQ and be ilvl efficient, cause most MSQ after HW is over and Dragonsong kicks in is ilvl locked

There are 4 different tomes because: Poetics are the highest tier from 2.x; Esoterics, Lore, and Scripture are 3.x tomestone tiers (these are NOT available to players that don't have Heavensward). With every other patch, we receive a new tomestone tier to buy better gear with. Esoterics can't actually be earned anymore as they were phased out; you can only exchange them for one of the newer tomestones currently if you have any lying around. Scripture gear has the highest item level so far (i260 base, i270 with upgrades via Alexander The Creator Savage; this might change in the 3.5 series patches).

Do the Centurio daily/weekly hunts. Get Centurio seals. Use those seals to buy the 3.x artifact gear as filler while you are building up stacks of Lore and Scripture tomestones. Replace Centurio gear with either of those 2 sets. (recommended)

Alternatively, you can run the 24 man raids for Heavensward - The Void Ark & Weeping City - to get i200/i230 gear as filler while you're stocking up on Lore/Scripture; but there is a minimum ilevel requirement to enter those raids, and drops are dependent on coffer RNG (and those queue times). The 3 tiers of the Alexander normal raid (Gordias, Midas, & The Creator) also have item drops that you can use to exchange for gear (highest being i250 from The Creator normal), but again, you have the same criteria as the 24 man raids (and, more specifically, you need a certain # of items to exchange in to get your desired gear - that means repeated runs).

Needless to say, if you run any of the end game instances (dungeons, raids, trials) and you see a piece of gear you want with a higher item level drop, need/greed that and replace as you go along.

Esoterics don't exist anymore, they're only there so people with leftover currency can exchange them, they should be removed from the game next patch.

They're the only two dungeons in the game like that. It's unfortunate that new players have to endure such a shitty experience for what should be a climactic point in the ARR story, but they have acknowledged that it was shitty game design and thankfully they have done nothing of the sort again.

I generally advise new players to either get a crew of FC or Linkshell friends to go with you into those two dungeons, or if you are using Duty Finder, to just kind of sit back and watch the cutscenes in your first run. Then in subsequent runs you can join in on the boss fights. It's not super ideal, but that's the reality of Castrum and Praetorium.

If you sit back and watch a cutscene, what happens if the rest of the party goes ahead and activates the next cutscene while you're still watching the previous one? Would the next cutscene start automatically right after the current one finishes?

I'm wondering if maybe it'd make more sense to youtube the dungeons w/cutscenes first, then play them skipping cutscenes.

Yes, the next cutscene will start immediately afterwards. So you could just watch the cutscenes in order and let everyone else rush through and beat the dungeon.

When I did the final 2.0 8 man dungeon my experience was watching all the cutscenes then hitting the last boss once before it died.

Thankfully those last two dungeons are the only ones where this happens.

Do you have any desire to do an Anima weapon? If so, purchase "Thavnarian Mist" and "Superior Enchanted Ink" with your poetics from the vendor in Mor Dona and store them. When you get to the Umbrite stage, you can trade 5x of each for Crystal Sand, which you will need a lot of.

One thing about that i250 crafted gear is that it's much cheaper to get the mats if you know a crafter friend that can make them for you. The most rare mats you get with lore tomes.

The flight plan I just filed with the agency list me, my men, Dr. Pavel here. But only one of you!
I just did that chain of 3 Fates in Coerthas Central Highlands where you escort the engineer dude to build the canon then fight the dragon. Pretty epic stuff. I ended up kiting the thing in circles for the latter half of its health while the 2 other people there whittled it down.

I also unlocked floor 51 of POTD. Is there a specific Aetherpool rating I should shoot for before I start farming that instead of 1-10 for xp?

So I have a character I've done a little bit of everything on. I burnt out on him though, with the highest class being a level 30 lancer.

I'm looking to go back and enjoy the story. I thought about continuing the story with my old character, but I really have no idea what's going on, so a new guy seems like the best idea. I guess the advice is to just stick to the main storyline quests religiously? I liked dabbling in the crafting and jobs and the Golden Saucer, but I actually want to get through it this time.

Why are all the quests here super low level. All these useless quest markers are annoying me. What should I do?

People can start in Limsa, and as such, there are starter level quests. Do the main story quest, and it will probably take you to a village or outpost in a Limsa region zone, and those villages and outposts will have side quests in line with your main story quest level requirements.

Jade Nephrite was my go to BAE Crafter, but I think he quit or not subbed
Goes for most, my Friends list is barren

Have Exeleon Vex as only OG GAFfer
Gonna be tough to find an awesome crafter that I have a good standing with

We'll see, if its too much of a grind, I'll just finish HW, get to as much ilvl possible, start Dragonsong, then just let the 30 free days lapse, come back like a month before Stormblood and catch up again...
Just trying to be a stop gap player

If I get into say a nice groove might stick around for the grind, but if not finish as much as possible
Not interested in Anima, fuck that bullshit grind, also by Stormblood everything will most likely reset and new Anima type weapons to chase

Do the MSQ stuff, ignore the low-level stuff and save them for building other classes. I took a break in Limsa actually and leveled up a MRD there using those quests so I could unlock DRG whenever I got to that point.

You can generally trust most high-end crafters, as they can't keep a good reputation if they can't actually make the things for people when all the mats are provided, you just need to make sure they are a high-end crafter. I'm sure people could point you in the right direction.

I commissioned a HQ Eikon piece back in 3.2 (first time I'd ever done this) and the guy messed up and made a striking piece instead of maiming and replaced it at no additional cost to me and said most of the people who are high-end crafters will do this as they invested way too much time into getting geared up to make the stuff in the first place to have their reputations ruined.

If you want to get through the story (and reach the expansions) in a timely manner, then yeah.

40px-Mainquest1_Icon.png
main story quest (MSQ), unlocks some game features (such as chocobo mount)
40px-Featurequest1_Icon.png
sidequest that unlocks some sort of game feature, dungeons, etc
40px-Novicequest1_Icon.png
hall of the novice (level 15 gear set + exp ring)

And don't forget your class's guild quests, and to attune to every Aetheryte crystal for teleport access.

So like honestly, the way it is now, your item level will skyrocket when you hit 60. The weapon makes up most of it. (it's weighted the heaviest, and there's ways to get your weapon before you hit 60 while also leveling your class to 60)

To get into the expansion you'll probably only need item level 220, which isn't even close to the cap for Heavensward (Cap is like 272 if you're in full 270 with an Alexandrian weapon?) and the gear that's dropping from the last set of dungeons is 225, plus there's 230 and 260 gear obtainable from endgame currency as well as the last 24 man dropping 230. (The one being added in the next patch will drop 260.)

Additionally, when Stormblood comes out they'll probably just hand out the ilvl required to get into Stormblood through the main scenario quest. They did the same for when Heavensward came out.

I'm looking to start playing FFXIV and I have some questions if anyone can help me. I only have a ps3 right now, I know its not the best option but I want to start on ps3 then switch to PS4 later in the year when I can afford to. I just want to know, do I just buy the realm reborn for 19.99 on psn? I see that on the store and just need to know if that's all I need. I can get heavensword later but can I just start with realm reborn?

I so want to do the Binding Coil of Bahmut from Turns 1-14 just so I can experience the whole story and mechanics of this massive raid.

Its just so hard to get a group going from the DF or even the Party Finder.

Anyone here know what's the best way of doing this?

you advertise that you have bonus in PF

also most of the story is in the penultimate turns, the rest is mostly just "we have to go deeper into the binding coils of bahamut" to get the full story you'd really only need to do 5, 9 12 and 13.

Honestly, you're not realistically going to be able to experience the mechanics too much. It's unlike you'll get a group together than wants to do it at lvl 50 and doing it as intended. You'll be in lvl 60 unsynched parties just mowing down everything. There's really only one turn that even at 60 requires some knowledge of mechanics (last turn of second coil).

However,to experience the story, just keep an eye out for Party Finder groups doing Wondrous Tales, and let them know you have a first time bonus. They will probably welcome you. Just know that you'll likely have to skip the cut scenes and watch later at your inn room.
