Final Fantasy XV Gamescom Active Time Report - CNN reporting live from disaster scene

He's saying in the interview that they're working on all the areas across the game instead of working on one area at a time, so there are a lot of unfinished areas in that 60-80% range they're not ready to show yet.

But that would mean that once they're ready, there should be a lot of things they can display.

I hope they don't show off too much at any point, maybe just a few snippets of some areas, but I dont wanna see everywhere before I play the game.

Like this, this or this?

You're implying that it's impossible for them to put out a good trailer, with 4 trailers now released and one of them being something different you didn't like.

I'm implying that since Nomura was gone, trailers suffered a hit on quality. Probably because, it seems Tabat believes is not really worth it, or puts away significant resources from the game, which, honestly is like the first time I heard this.

Compare the TGS trailer to this...

Wow. You have to be a special kind of pessimist to only see negative after this interview.

Not negative, just keep being indifferent.

Words comes easy, actual facts is what matters here.

If you want I'm pessimistic on their utterly awful ATR approach, I think I have all the right to keep being so. lol

IV had summons as important elements in Rydia's story. VI had summons as a major part of the plot. VIII again had summons as a core part of the game's story (and mechanics).

IX and X feature them as very central elements to the world's mythology and the main story.

Summons being not just a spell you cast is actually pretty common, I'd argue.

Now, them being actual characters is pretty rare, with only really FFT, FFX to some extent, and FFXIV being the ones to do that.

I was referring to that part yeah. Tabata wanted the summon to be integrated within XV's world - so that it made sense for people to live with these over powered deity running around. Now, whether he actually pull it off is other matter but the previous game skirts around this aspect: VIII's GF was apart of one of the stupidest plot induce amnesia of the series and outside of that, nobody seems to really care they exist. X have summons as a central point but the one essential to the main plot all have the common objectives
of stop dreaming and stopping Yu Yevon
None of them have any detail personalities except maybe Anima..

I would see though Noctis only swimming on the surface, but not diving inside the water like in the 2013 trailer, but at this point it would just not be coherent with reality...

Are you thinking about underwater swimming? I think regular swimming is fine and fairly important to open for various opportunities to explore.

Under water swimming I despise. While I can tolerate surface stuff, not usually a fan of that either. It's just usually far too slow for my liking and feels like a chore

At least Tabata's trailers are in-game and display the product as it is, unlike this and Nomura's stuff which is all CG.

We don't need another downgrade uprising from this game, with all the flak it has got already.

I liked this bit:

when you release information about a game very early, as it was the case with Versus XIII which is a game that never really took shape, how the information is viewed by the world is very different to what we think. At the moment it goes out into the world, it stops being our thing and becomes something for the fans.

I've often thought about this - one of the real dangers of early showings is getting too much specific fan speculation about the characters and story.

Then, when things become more concrete, from the fan perspective it can be like: you told us X but are now giving us Y!

But, from the developer's perspective, it may be more like: you made up an elaborate fan fiction and got really invested in it, but it has nothing to do with what we are making.

One thing I find interesting is that Tabata always refers to the changes as "when we changed from Versus XIII to XV", which leads me to think that perhaps the original XV reveal wasn't quite as similar to the Versus we've been expecting as we assumed.

I really wish they would talk about this in more detail. And hopefully the reason they don't is just because they don't want to spoil anything, because if that's the case, at least there's a chance we'll get more in depth into this issue once the game comes out. It must be one hell of a story, this game's development.

Sure, is a shame the Witcher 3 got downgraded (I'm kinda happy, since I actually can run it). But is still a beautifully directed and edited trailer.

Unlike Dawn...

Imagine this going on for 6-7 years where you've been given information regarding the game but very little of it shown up in the 9-10 mins flashy trailers. Now Tabata actually gives us an demo and even updated it once and suddenly he's the desecrating Nomura's vision and ruining the game.

Yeah it seems the real shift began when Nomura was removed from the project and Tabata remained as the sole director.

Great interview. Makes me feel better about progress. Did they really not think that THAT info was more important at gamescom than what they did show?

Right, I think if they'd given a better sense of where they were in development and how it was proceeding it would have defused the reaction quite a bit.

Underwater battles is a terrible idea to begin with for FFXV since it's supposed to be realistic. There is a reason why Witcher 3 only allows the use of crossbow underwater, and even then the controls surrounding it is clunky.

I also don't believe that good, informative trailer is mutually exclusive to the game's development. This is probably the first time someone actually used this as an excuse for weak trailer as far as I know, and it's not a very satisfying answer to me.

Yeah, I believe 100% that Witcher 3 would've been better off omitting monsters and combat from underwater entirely.

Agreed, but even in these games we don't get a sense of them having their own agenda and pursuing it. Rather, they're more like expressions of the summoner's will, even though they do have integrated back stories.

I'm really interested in this summon-as-character angle.

We still get downgrades with in-game stuff too though. Like the October walkthrough..

anyways lets hope he puts out some good gameplay footage next time. I gave up expecting a good trailer from the team so I am focusing my attention to gameplay footage now.

I do want them to at least allow us to swim underwater though. It added more depth to the over world.

I'm really interested in this summon-as-character angle.

I remember the quest to obtain Ramuh in FFIX, he was coming forth to you as a character, questionning you with riddles and a little hide-and-seek mini-game, but I think it's the only occurence where a summon was appearing and interacting with the MC as an NPC or character in the story.

At the same time, both in IX and X they don't really take on a role of protagonists or antagonists with their own plans and wishes - with some exceptions. So dependent on how these aspects are treated, Tabata might actually be right when he says that they are doing something new. Of course, this all depends on how far down the rabbit hole he goes with this.

Most summons interact with Yuna in FFX (and Bahamut with Tidus).

I think it's a lot of work for not a lot of gain. Not to mention the controls for swimming underwater most likely going to suck. Swimming on the surface though, I want that. I can't imagine playing Xenoblade without the ability to swim. Heck some of the regions are basically built around swimming, and the various lands are hidden away for players to explore. I like that aspect, and without swimming, the game might be filled with tons of invisible wall, which blows.

Nomura directed all those trailers you listed, and even before those when FFXV was Versus 13 we had in-game gameplay footage and multiple cutscenes that weren't CGI.

The first trailer you linked, that whole scene with the castle break in and leviathan is supposedly scrapped from the game entirely and it's being replaced with something else.
The last two trailers are closer to what the game is now.

So... Yeah, the debate is still up if they can make a decent trailer under Tabata.

Thanks, it's good stuff. I'd recommend reading it.
[*]All the FNC terms/names are gone so the game is not confused with XIII

BOOM, and that's all she wrote!!

Totally glad they went this route. RIP, FNC. You had so much potential as a concept, but Square fucked you up. Time to move forward.

The last two trailers are closer to what the game is now. Problem is these trailers were made and released when Nomura was still on the project. The last trailer was the last one he did when he was taken off the project in September because the trailer was announced to be shown in Decembers Jump Festa a day after.

So... Yeah, the debate is still up if they can make a decent trailer under Tabata.

If Nomura was still so heavily involved with the project during the last two trailers, I guess we can also prepare to abandon the mindset that it was Tabata who scrapped his vision.

RIP Etro T_T.

I wonder if Noctis saw Versus 13's soul floating up to the gate all those years ago.

... did he see Stella's?

Actually, he said terms like Fal'Cie and La'Cie are no longer in the game, or at least not mentioned in dialogue early. Since the core mythology remains, Etro et all will most certainly be a part of this.

I found this part of the interview a bit ... funny

in response to the airships as DLC

Ideally, if we had enough time and resources for the development, we would spend that time working out the technology to get airships into the game, making sure it all fits in and polishing it to the level it needs to be.

I mean come on man. Game has been in development for a decade. " if we had enough time for development ". Just ... yeah no words really. So pretty much through the last 8 years putting airships into the game was never thought of. And only recently, probably though fan requests, the idea of an airship was brought up and attempted to be implemented but it won't be able to get done in time.

Apparently you have to be a game director to direct a trailer.

It's not been in development for a decade, it's been a new project since it became Final Fantasy XV.

You don't know, maybe it was not even planned to be in the game to begin with in FFVsXIII : the only method of transportation Noctis was interacting is the car and the magitech armors...oh and tanks !

more like "the idiots who started working on luminous didn't think about the stuff that is needed to make airships workable"

I'm glad they're making the game as good as it can be from the ground up, rather than making misleading vertical slices for the sake of trailers.
