<watches video>

Everything looks great but I'm not convinced on the combat at all. Not going to give them the benefit of the doubt considering past games so guess I'll just have to wait and see when it releases.
That .gif perfectly sums up my reaction so far. Like, I should be absolutely blown away, but nothing they've shown of the game so far is clicking with me. This is the first time in my life where I haven't been excited for a FF game. Maybe I'm just a bitter old man now.

I'm mostly concerned. Bad, pointless stealth sections are anathema to my enjoyment of a game. If there's an unavoidable spotlight moving at you at light speed to indicate the scripted end of stealth that's really, really stupid.
But if there's a genuine reward for not getting detected like a completely different boss fight (doesn't even have to be easier), more money/exp than you would have gotten by fighting your way through, then I'm all for it.
The video doesn't make it clear which is the case.

If Type 0 was an indication, they're probably let you choose. There were similar missions in Type 0 where if you chose to sneak you just get some extra items. Not a big deal. And this looks like low level sneaking anyway and a good way of using warp abilities.

Also. I don't get why people day the locale doesn't look like FF. The location reminds me of what the Magitek factory from FF6 might look like. It could also have been a location from VII or VIII.

The location also looks like a Type 0 location that is not constrained by the PSP's limitations.

Is the stealth section ending like that scripted?

If not, then does none of that stuff in the video happen if you successfully reach whatever goal is in there without getting discovered?

If so, then what is the point of a stealth section if the outcome is the same (kill everyone)?

If you bothered to even watch the ATR, then you wouldn't be asking this question.

Have you not been in a Final Fantasy thread for the past fifteen years? :P

That's nothing new.

FInal Fantasy XII had the same reaction.

So did XIII.

People have their own ideas of what a Final Fantasy is, and that doesn't always align with the developers idea.

No, I understand a lot of people want a Final Fantasy in the veins of FFIX. I get that, definitely. But what boggles my mind is how FFXV is already widely known among gaming community to be a departure from previous FF, especially in gameplay, for a very long time. Not like it's a just recently announced FFXVI and that turn out to be a FPS or something. I'd be first to scream "THIS IS NOT FF!!", but for FFXV? It's not turn-based since 2006. It's not going to be turn-based or ATB ten years later. Jeez.

I mean at this point i think its safe to say that the gun combat has been removed right? I know it was in that one stream that one time but since then its been mia. Anyway its looks like an improvment over the demo.

I consider Noctis movement to be like Sora in KH2. More toned down though, obviously.

Nothing else reminds me of KH, to be honest. Especially the passive actions.

Is this what it means to run a train on someone?

As always this gen, wet road is looking good.

Dualshockers summed up new game info from the ATR.
http://www.*****************/2016/0...-on-magic-niflheim-empire-combat-new-artwork/

 • The build shown today from the Progress Report video is actually pretty old. The footage is dated between August and September.
 • The frog at the end is the effect of the Toad spell that can be cast on the player by an enemy.
 • Fire set to the environment will hurt both friends and foes.
 • The Fire spell isn’t like the classic fireball that affects a single enemy like in previous Final Fantasy games, but it affects an area from the beginning.
 • Flames will spread naturally and ignite flammable items, like grass and wooden buildings. The game actually distinguishes between flammable items and those that can’t catch fire.
 • If it’s raining, flames will not spread and the fire will be doused quickly.
 • After a while, the signs of scorching are removed by a “strange force.” In Final Fantasy XV magic derives from the elements, and after a while that power returns to the planet.
 • There are other magic elements besides fire, but it isn’t a huge amount, to give each its own specific identity. There will also be Blizzard and Lightning. Blizzard will be showcased first.
 • Thunder will be more powerful when it rains due to the interaction between electricity and water. Blizzard will freeze water and slow down enemies.
 • Elemental magic is present in various locations around the world. It’s a kind of energy that the player gathers and is stored like an item in inventory. You can equip it instead of a weapon in battle.
 • There’s another kind of magic on top of elemental magic, and that’s ring magic, that can be used only by the bearer of the royal ring of Lucis. While elemental magic will be available from the beginning, ring magic will be available only after reaching a certain point in the story.
 • The Kingdom of Lucis and the Niflheim Empire have different sources of military might. Lucis draws power from the magic of the Crystal. For instance, they can use it to create barriers to block invasions. Niflheim bases its power on technology and mechanical weapons.
 • Niflheim has a large number of mechanized troops and magitek weaponry.
 • Car culture and mechanization spread from Niflheim to Lucis, but the people from Lucis then further developed in their own way according to their culture.
 • In the gallery below we can see the government structure of Niflheim.
 • At the top of Niflheim is the ruthless supremacist Emperor Iedolas. At the beginning of the game he’s actually semi-retired from politics, and the empire is run by the Chancellor, Adryn.
 • Adryn is a slightly “humorous” character who is at the center of the power of the empire. He’s very shrewd and plays an important part in the story.
 • Verstael is the man who developed the technology behind the Magitek infantry.
 • General Glauca leads the army, which includes the magitek infantry, which in turn is formed by former models and combat prototypes. The officers are all human, while all the simple troops are magitek. The older models are normally used outside of actual battle.
 • The female character introduced today is named Aranea Highwind and she’s in command of Niflheim’s 87th Airborne Unit, which is “kind of a mercenary unit.” She’s human and due to her ability in aerial combat, the army started to refer to her as “the Dragoon.”
 • The camera has been improved a lot since Episode Duscae. It’s better at anticipating the movement of the player. It’s automated as much as possible so that the player won’t need to move it manually as much as it was necessary before.
 • The UI is still being worked on, but many changes have been done following feedback from Episode Duscae.
 • Now the system allows for better control, and the buttom configuration has also been changed from the demo.
 • In the demo many features were unlocked by default, but in the actual game, they will be unlocked gradually.
 • The “fourth combo” system has been introduced. The player gives an order to one of Noctis’ buddies, the camera zooms on him, as he executes his action, then it zooms back to Noctis. Those moves are tied to the growth system of the characters.
 • Ignis can create warp points that Noctis can use, including on enemies. Prompto can use flares, and those will influence enemies afraid of light. Gladio can use powerful area attacks.
 • Magic has large effects on the environment. You can also cause explosions if you set fire to the right items, like oil.
 • Now the team is using LOD on shadows, so now they’re much better implemented, and more can be displayed. Since there are multiple lights in the environment, multiple shadows have to be cast by each object. That’s what makes the game look so realistic.
 • Fog looks different depending on brightness, atmosphere and environment.
 • What we saw today is very close to complete. The assets are being transfered and optimized from PC to console, so things are a bit unstable now.
 • Basically everything can be reproduced on console, but some element requires further optimization to improve performance, and that’s a challenging task.
 • The team is well into the process of transferring the game on consoles now. The process has started a while back, when the game was in pre-beta.
 • Tabata-san thinks that we’re not too far from when the game will be printed on masters.
 • There will be plenty of infiltration missions, but they won’t be based completely on stealth. You’ll be able to take over enemy artillery and cause a lot of explosions. There will be elements of the environment that will be will be destructible.
 • The player will be able to actually capture Niflheim bases during the game, and that’s a different activity to enjoy the game on top of the main story.
 • Tabata-san thinks that the team finally managed to create the battle system they originally envisioned.
 • The tech demo coming before the game’s release is not focused on combat, but it will be dedicated to let players get acquainted with the world. Combat will still be included.

Don't believe this'll make 2016 for a second.

People said TW3 combat looked bad but this takes the crown easily, yikes.

Incorrect, 'people' said TW3's combat played bad after they'd actually played the game. I wasn't a huge fan of the combat in FFXV's demo, but I'd definitely say it's more enjoyable than TW3 on that score at least... Damning with faint praise though that may be.

You cannot be serious...

But yar. the music sounds really nice. I should explore SHinomura's work more.

I'm serious, I'm not really interested in just walking around with my bro's giving bro fists and eating brotaterchips. I thought they would take the criticism and change things up a bit.

That...doesn't really make a lot of sense to me. I mean if it was a first party title then sure, because it'd be weird as hell if Uncharted turned up on Xbox One for instance but v13 died a few years ago. XV was never positioned as PS4 exclusive I believe? So...are you still referring to PS3 or the PlayStation brand because by all accounts the best place for you to play it outside of a PC version in a year or two (which may be a shit port) is PS4, so your choice is no less valid or...valuable...I mean if anything Tabata hasn't diluted the game at all despite it being multi-plat.

I mean I can sorta of - even if I think it's very dumb for a third party exclusive - understand any grievances over V13 on PS3 never coming out...but lawd let it go :P You will still get the best - for now - version of the game at somepoint this year. Your platform of choice has value based of what you get out of it, to base it on speculation would be like the people who long for Half Life 3 and don't make jokes ironically.
Exclusives are exclusives, 3rd party or not. And it's not like I was overzealous when ffs15 was announced as multiplatform; I was never really big into ffs but I knew that game was supposed to be exclusive, so I thought I'd check it out; then it was a multiplatform I was just more of a meh, and whatever about it.

To give a personal example, I got into the yakuza series because it was exclusive; it's a game that's only available on the platform I chose. there's other criteria that made me interested in it, but my point is that exclusives serve a purpose in this market, and myself as a consumer follow that purpose.

Edit: I'm not really judging you it's just...I don't understand why value in something that never came to be is still relevant. Unless I am remembering wrongly and XV was a PS4 exclusive in 2013. And to be fair...it's a bit much to cry wolf when you basically acknowledged your op was a bit asshole-y.
I admitted that it may come off as asshole-y due to how the average person would react, but I don't agree that it's fair to judge someone so harshly because of it. this game did start out as a playstation exclusive.

You're absolutely being judged on your criteria. You yourself admit it isn't a good look.
I recognize that it isn't a good look, but I don't agree that it should be.
If you feel that way and don't want to be judged by others, then you shouldn't post it in a place for others to judge you.
That's the thing, I don't want to have to hide my opinions just because others are going to judge me for it...that says something about how easily you lose respect here. I like it here on gaf, for the better part of last year I've gotten along with everyone but I mention one unpopular opinion and everything goes downhill.

Is this for real?
yes, this is for real.

Question from someone who has not followed development of this game at all.

Where are the awesome Summons? Are they still a part of the gameplay?

Unfortunately you won't get a turnbased game again.
Never say never. Kitase said it's quite possible turn-based could be used again in future installments(in the main series). I forgot where I heard it, but he said something to the equivalent of the games having battle systems that work BEST for each specific game. And I'm not saying there is one way to accomplish things, but I recall people hard pressed on knowing definitively how the series IS going to go being proven wrong time and time again regarding this series.

Like when it was mentioned(earlier in the thread) that we'll never get another FFIX again, back before FFIX, that's exactly what people were saying. We were NEVER getting another heavily fantasy/medieval FF game again, and it was going to be "sci-fi/futuristic fantasy" from here on out, and then Square delivered a quick bitchslap to them with FFIX(and since, there's been more medieval FF worlds, like FFXI, FFXII and FFXIV, even though people debate FFXII, which is heavily stylized medieval world). Its why I keep my mind open regarding this series. People that tend to definitive truth regard what makes a "Final Fantasy" game and where its future is heading tend to be proven wrong.

as it started out as a game originally supposed to be a playstation exclusive, yeah, i'd be more interested in it. i know that makes me sound like an asshole but it's not about other platform owners not getting to play it, it's about my platform of choice having added value for having an exclusive game.

I don't just mean combat. From what I've read people have a myriad of reasons of why it doesn't feel like Final Fantasy, and combat maybe one small part.

I can see where they're coming from with this trailer really. I was talking to a friend about it earlier today who doesn't really like Final Fantasy, and he said to me that he wouldn't have even thought it was Final Fantasy if I hadn't have said (or the youtube title hadn't have said it).

In this trailers case, I think it's more of a problem with how they're drip feeding little bits every few months. So you get some people who miss some of the trailers, and then they come and look at this one which is very Metal Gearish, and they may be disappointed. Because they haven't seen other information or videos or whatever, they don't realise this is only a small part of the game(and apparently optional, at that).

No, there is no reason to assume that at all. This is literally the second time we've seen the game since that August footage.

I'm not one of those people who screams "this isn't FF!" mainly because SE seems to have no idea either.

That said, let's look at it this way. Since FFX (last major ATB system), FF has spiraled all over the place in quality and acceptance.

FFXI - MMO that people refuse to accept as a mainline entry. Fantastic one though but stuck in the age of EQ in a way. I loved it.
FFXII - Offline FFXI playstyle that people are mixed on, but suffered from major issues throughout the game. Not ATB.
FFXIII - Absolutely dumped on from pretty much every piece of the fanbase.
FFXIV 1.x - A Disaster that nearly killed the IP along XIII. FFXIV: ARR saved it, but has to copy WoW to do it and is basically an homage to every FF pre FFX. It is currently going through issues of its own.
FFXV - It's history is well known.

Since leaving the ATB system, this IP has not thrived. It has not done very well at all in its mainline entries and its spinoffs were hit and miss. Can you blame some people who want to see ATB back? After all, that system was in the IPs most favorite, best and critically accepted games.

I'm serious, I'm not really interested in just walking around with my bro's giving bro fists and eating brotaterchips. I thought they would take the criticism and change things up a bit.

This late in the game? It's a bit much. I just meant you can't be serious in terms of...the details have been fairly consistent in this regard for a couple of years. I suppose if there was a bigger outcry - which probably only would have come about if this was the new standard for FF rather than a single title and a story told in a particular way - then they might have changed.

I guess they just have to shoulder the criticism in this regard. It's hardly as bro as you want to suggest though :P

I'm not saying more variety wouldn't be nice but...it's not like it's the be all/end all, or that I've been thinking it's X only to find out it is Y at release.

You know, that video was surprising. I say that as the stealth portion was handled really, really well for something that is mainly an action/JRPG. Noctis being able to warp around all over the place is likely why that section looked so polished and fun but still, was impressed seeing that.

Also cool seeing the gameplay changes with this (what I assume) final build of the game. You have your different weapons mapped to the D-Pad, Circle to attack and warp around, holding one of the shoulder buttons to bring up the Party-Team Up attacks and even the ability to equip magic spells to the D-Pad.

I wonder if Warping is mapped to another button (as you pressed Circle for warping in both the stealth and combat sections) but we will learn more over time. Also nice seeing variety for combat encounters, as you aren't just fighting troops but also giant robots with body parts having different health bars for each part. Liked how you could destory one of the legs to spill oil everywhere, then use a fire spell to set the hold place on fire.

The new female enemy looks interesting too (and I like she isn't complete fan service; she looks intimidating, powerful and has a lot of practical armor on her). She should be a really fun enemy to fight :D.

The music is amazing too; love how the theme is quite during the stealth portion but bombastic and a great remix of the original battle theme from the demos.

Graphics look great so far too and I love the detailed animations for each of the party members too. Personally looking forward to this whenever I get my PS4 this year and I hope the game comes out this summer (as I assume Persona 5, another major JRPG I want to get, is releasing this fall in North America with Japan getting it sometime this summer. EU...I hope it comes out this year, considering how bad Atlus supports that region X().

I'm serious, I'm not really interested in just walking around with my bro's giving bro fists and eating brotaterchips. I thought they would take the criticism and change things up a bit.

Do you understand the work that would be required to do that? The game has literally been built around Noctis, Gladiolus, Prompto, and Ignis since the game was announced as Versus XIII. They'd have to change the story and the mechanics to fit a completely new character into the mix. So no amount of criticism is going to change that aspect because this is the game they're trying to make.

With that said, they have mentioned that there will be guest characters in your party every now and then and some of them will be female. But those four are going to be your primary party.

You thought they'd change the entire direction of the game?

I think it's poor design choice to have an all male cast in a FF game, that's all. I mean I'll probably still play the game but it just didn't feel like FF to me given some of the design choices.

Having lighting last series was great, I'm not saying they had to make a female the lead again but not having any female party members just sucks IMO.

That being said, the battle system is intriguing, but would like some more footage and some boss fights.

I don't think I've ever felt so ambivalent about a game before, I want it to be amazing and reignite the franchise, but I'm just completely unsure if it'll pull it off.

Some people have not followed the game's development since 2006. I mean I'm still reading posts like "I'm glad this is my first Final Fantasy." I'm thinking, why not try a Final Fantasy game in the last 10 years since this game's announcement.

This sounds cynical but I bet there are people who don't even know that this has roots in Versus XIII.

Ignoring the series because they haven't made anything good since FFXII?

Ha, no.

While the XIII Trilogy has been controversial and the original FFXIV was a travesty.

A Realm Reborn: Final Fantasy XIV is one of the only subscription based MMOs that haven't went free to play. It's been regarded by man long time fans of the series as a tribute to all the things that make the series magical.

exclusive stuff

Isn't Yakuza available on Wii U or something? I swear I remember hearing the HD versions were on there but only in Japan. Fair enough though, I guess you feel that if it was exclusive it would have a certain...unspoken quality that just made it feel a bit more special?

To be honest I can sort of understand that, but more in a cross-gen sense.

To be fair, I don't think XIII was terrible because of it's combat.

Hell, although I really didn't care much for XII's combat, a lot of people really like it on GAF.

Also, both use ATB technically.

Indeed. However, we're not in ARR anymore. HW is having some definite issues.

Hot damn, now that's what I'm talking about. I noticed there was a flashing icon on screen when he summoned, can you only use it in scripted moments?

In the demo you can summon Ramuh when your HP hits zero, but that's just a placeholder. We don't yet know how to summon in the final game.

...FFX wasn't ATB though.
