I get there sentiment, which was to make him more "fatherly", and I like the change but the old Regis design was sleeker.

Personally, I feel like the new Regis has a more emotive face than the older one. I still think the original design was unique and had more potential to be better received because of it. It's a weird thing to change after so long in development. And we gotta wait for March to hear their reasoning.

I don't buy the Yakuza stuff for Regis, though. Like how he was a Yakuza father before and now he isn't. Until I hear a source, he was never Yakuza to begin with. He just looked like one. Nomura never talked about their shady dealings or any Yakuza behaviour, ever. I think it's something people made up, just like the "foreign fugitive" thing with Prompto.

While that's certainly possible, in the stand off with original Regis, there is a character in the background that suspiciously looks very much like new Regis.

Yes, my far off theory is that the original design Regis is a fatherly figure to Noctis, but not connected biologically. Tolkien Regis needed to be stuck to the throne to defend his nation. Every other design is intact, so I think it's fair to hold some stupid theory for a Square Enix game.

He was never Yakuza like in terms of shady dealings, I do remember Nomura saying that they looked at the Yakuza in terms of organization structure and they were influenced by them with Lucis but I don't think that means that makes them necessarily shady people.

Can I get a source? I'd love to read up on that.

This game is already shaping to be a strong candidate for GOTY. This footage looks insanely good and just by imagine that the game will have 40+ hours of this top notch combat plus lot's of open world goodnes is making me really really hyped now!

And I don't even have a PS4 to play this wich I would get soon so I can play this beauty and Uncharted 4 and Ratchet and Clank.

I'm really really excited for this game, I haven't played a FF since vii on ps1 lol.

Animation is second to none (UC4?), graphics are cray and this shit just looks cool/fun.

SE may have a banger on their hands

It could just be years of overthinking, but I remember it suggested in the Versus days that the Lucis kingdom aren't necessarily the good guys.

Yeah, old Regis design is pretty freaking amazing... still better than the new Regis design. I remember a old XV trailer where Noctis was eating soup and old Regis design made a funny face to Noctis. It was a heartwarming moment. New Regis design needs more moments like those. Holding your son and crying by a car is special but still...

Years of overthinking led to "foreign fugitive" Prompto. :P

I don't think we ever knew for sure about their kingdom. I still think there will be a morality issue in this game, but whether it's Yakuza or not I dunno. I would love to be wrong, though.

New Regis is definitely a lot better.

I am going to have to dig deep so give me a bit :lol

That very well could be. I think it would be interesting if they weren't really the good guys. Maybe part of Noctis's fate is paying for Regis's mistakes and part of the reason why he is so sad in the Dawn trailers... Speculation be damned :lol

My guess is they decided to have Noctis age by the end of the game so they needed a design and just re-purposed BEST Regis as that instead of getting Nomura to make something new.

idk.

I was watching the first Dawn trailer, and holy shit, I hadn't noticed that not only it has the Prelude, but it also contains the 6 first notes of the Final Fantasy main theme. Very nice detail. :D

I wonder how many times Noctis will fall to his knees and shout at the sky? At least twice. How many times will someone shed a single tear of anguish?

And surprisingly, to this day, we have people saying "I hate what this game has become, a roadtrip with friends".

It's fine to hate a story setting and set-up, so long as you're not being hypocritical about it. (loving VsXIII's roadtrip but hating XV's)

I think it's more annoying when the terminology of roadtrip is re-emphasised without framing the context of what it means. What differentiates a "grand journey through various parts of the world" or "pilgrimage" or "escape trip" with this "roadtrip"?

Most JRPGs at its core, is a roadtrip with friends/strangers. Just because one has a cooler name or purpose than the other doesn't change it. Besides, we already know within the story of XV, the "roadtrip" quickly becomes a "escape/hiding/fighting back the Empire" based off the TGS trailer.

Dumbasses.

As much as I hate it I can't blame people who have either forgotten or not followed this game like a religion like some of us have.

This source doesn't say it outright but:

Damn reading all these old interviews is bringing back some serious memories.

While it's true, questioning morality was supposed to be a big part of the game(the reason they used the Shakespeare quote), I kinda thought the whole "Yakuza" thing meant a mafia-like structure too, as in being "mob family" based(having a focus on family and those close to the family playing important roles), as well as the general "style" of wearing suits. For what we do know of Lucis Kingdom, we don't know as much(regarding the personnel other than the main characters and Regis) than we do with Niflheim. We know Cid was a part of the group, as was Gladiolus's dad(who is nameless as of right now). Who else do you think we might not be aware of from Lucis that plays an important role in the game?

Where's that theory about old Regis being a bodyguard fot the true Regis, acting as a decoy?

I thought Prompto was a potential traitor... but it turns out he's most likely not a traitor.

I thought the dragon lady in the recent FF XV trailer was Stella... until Tabata confirmed she's totally not Stella.

Now there's a theory that the awesome old Regis design is still in the game because the new Regis design is actually a bodyguard? INTERESTING...

Oh and I still think Noctis' mom will appear in the game.

He's talking about appearance, so I don't think that's that. The last bit at the end does mention something about a new costume for Noctis. Huh.

And LOL, Nomura actually thinks he might be overdesigned.

I interpreted that to mean that Noctis would only wear the formal Roen suit during the peace treaty party. And now we know that scene has either been reworked or cut.

Oh, it's talking about the beginning of the game? I thought he was talking about his general attire. I didn't read the source directly so I'm probably in the wrong.

Actually reading the thing now, and it looks like you're right.

I don't have the source and it's been YEARS since then, so I have a 51% chance of being wrong, but I recall part of the Yakuza thing was also used to describe the relationship hierarchy of the Royal Family being akin to Yakuzas.

So instead of a purely strict master-subordinate relationship, it's closer to a "shatei-kyodai' relationship where there's the code of bro-ness and broyalty that guides the relationship.

That was debunked after we saw this.

They have similar features, but different person.

Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're saying.

While I loved the original design of Regis, he looks more like a king in the redesign.

What I want to know is where the hell is my man Cor Leonis? He's the character that stood out the most to me.

I mean both old Regis and new Regis exist, but one of them is a decoy to preserve the life of the king on a possible war/conflict.

If there is a king, there must be a queen. ;)

There's some sort of hierarchy present here. The 'shatei-kyodai'-ish relationship is something that we'll be able to tell if the old man interacts with his subordinates. We haven't seen that yet.

This game will live or die on the strength of its bromance, it needs to be at Bad Boys levels at the very least and preferably Boy meets world or Psych tier.

Yakuza has hierarchy too. Just cause you can call your master a bro and brofist him in public doesn't mean he can't demand you cut off some fingers for shameful display.

I hope this comes out before Persona 5, because the moment P5 is out this is going back on the shelf. I am still excited though.

I know, I'm not disagreeing. I've watched these kinds of flicks and have a general idea of how they behave. I'm just saying that we'll be able to tell what the organization is really like if we see interactions between different tiers.

This is the only thing I can find so far. I didn't think it would be this hard to find anything but it is not much. Literally a summary sentence from IGN about what Nomura said back in 2007.

Incidentally, Nomura likened the main character's royal family to the modern day mafia. In the initial trailer, we saw people in black suits who'd collapsed outside the royal palace. Those are members of the royal army.

At least I know I am not going crazy and read it from somewhere. I can keep digging since now I am weirdly enjoying these memories.

Anoop wrote this? Thanks for digging this out.

It's crazy but I've also noticed some of the Versus-era Nomura interviews have simply disappeared from the Web due to age. Eight to ten years is a long time for content to live on the web.

Doesn't look like FF13, we're finally leaving that era. YES.

But, stealth, Kingdom Hearts/Devil May Cry combat in FF game.

edit: and TURRETS, too?! Aw, man, what?

You had to hide on FFVII, turrets and mechs were present in FFIV, FFVI, FFVII, FFVIII, FFX and FFXII, turrets were used in FFVIII, oh, and by the way cars were used in FFVII and FFVIII.

Also, FFVI had a castle that could travel under sand.

Yep, FFXV is looking so not-FF right now.
*sigh*
