Oi unlimited airstep + lance turns Noctis into an aerial monster. Super agile, nonstop damage, easy to circle around monsters, dive out of range, etc.

With how warp points work with insta-refilling MP, it's sustainable.
I mostly haven't tried lances. I've been using the Zwill Crossblades (best daggers in game) for stuff like circling. There's also less end-game lances so I'm worried that would affect Ignis. My concern about aerial dancing is that it won't be useful in this last dungeon (Castlemark Sealed) as there are no warp points for auto-refill. I'm not sure how well the unlimited aerial dancing will work with the daggers. The other potential issue is that aerial dancing makes it harder to block which will be a particular area of concern in this Sealed Dungeon.

Can anyone give me a run down on the general consensus of this game right now that there has been time for the dust to settle for a bit. I will have D2 finished by the end of this week and will want to pick something new up soon and I really cant tell if I will like this or not.

what ended up good, what bad and what kinda just OK?

There's no consensus, playerbase appears split between two camps:
"It's flawed but I really enjoyed it" and
"It is an unfinished disaster".

My take:
The good:
Prompto's photography feature
The summons
The music (some of it is mediocre - towns - but much of it is spectacular)

The mixed:
The battle system
The visuals
The main four bros
The dungeons

The bad:
The story is worthless; pacing terrible; crucial plot points unexplained or pushed to other media
Performance is terrible throughout
Terrible as an open world game - poor traversal options; invisible walls everywhere; scale of the world is too big so it takes forever to get anywhere; nothing interesting to just 'stumble upon' out in the wild
Side-content is garbage fetch quests and repetitive hunts, both of which are 90% getting to your destination
Towns are lol-worthy
No customisation and the growth of your character isn't much fun, there are few meaningful 'RPG' character building options
Major boss battles are glitchy wonky silliness

I'd give it 4/10, worst open world game I've played.

I leveled up from lvl 38 to 60 in one boost, and it has made absolutely no difference to Ignis and Prompto being wiped out all the time. And there's nothing I can do about it.

At this stage Noctis has 6.5k HP and Prompto still has 3k. The balance here is completely off. All Ignis is good for is one 'Enhancement' per battle before he dies. (Although to be fair that's one fantastic ability.)

I wish they had spent more time balancing this battle system for your other party members.

...how are Prompto and Ignis dying so often? Have you given them accessories and the like to help? Apart from like one or two boss fights I decided to tackle earlier than I should have, I haven't had this issue

The game bugged out and decided to make my already lame chapter 13 experience even crappier.

At the first Axeman I encountered, something screwed up and I couldn't go into attack mode, no battle music or anything, and the enemies could hit me but not kill me. Yet the doors would still open so I could progress through the area. I went through a huge chunk of the chapter collecting these Axemen in a conga line and the only place they wouldn't follow me into was the save rooms.

So most of my experience with chapter 13 is jogging (because no sprinting in this chapter, why?) down narrow hallways with at least 3 Axemen constantly hitting me in the back and putting me in the stagger animation while my screen flashes red because I have low health.

I guess it's good to get through it without any risk of dying though.

Best part of chapter 13 is a characters motivation and plot is told by pieces of paper on the floor I mean seriously lol at that

I've given them the best accessories I have that (after Noctis - he comes first). At this stage I've actually already started getting some of the character-specific special accessories.

Ignis and Prompto die within 20 seconds of any battle near my level. The only way to keep them alive is to abuse the i-frame granted by Techniques. It's to the point where Ignis and Prompto are 10-15 whole levels below Noctis because they often get no experience.

Granted, on my journey from 38-60 I was regularly tackling content that was lvls 45-55 at lvl 38 but it was absolutely nothing Noctis and Gladio couldn't handle so it was frustrating seeing the other two so unbalanced by comparison.

Leveled from 23 to 37 in Chapter three then mainlined through to chapter 6. Is there a point when a bunch of new side quests open up that I can build up a bunch of XP in again?

Haven't beaten it just yet, but basically if you're really liking what you've seen from the combat and prioritize gameplay over the story, it's worth getting, as it, along with the dungeons and monster designs, make it a lot easier to overlook the game's flaws. If that doesn't matter, and you really can't stand an disjointed plot that tends to leave you with more questions than answers, then you should probably skip it, or wait for it to be cheaper.

It'd be hilarious if the final fantasy 7 remake ends up reviewing higher and a better game. Where the remake of an old game with a new battle system and prettier modern graphics ends up as a better modern final fantasy

Edit:I heard there's someone who trades you coins for better weapons. Where is this person?
I'm pretty sure this is what's going to happen. Take all the lessons learned from FFXV and apply them to FF7R.

Can't wait. Issues with the story aside, I'm in love with a lot of what they've done with FFXV.

Yea, as soon as Gladio got a shield, he pretty much stopped dying on me, not that he really died all that often to begin with.

Loving this game so far, but there's a few things that are bothering me:

The dialogue / English voice-over is super fucking cheesy.

The music doesn't match some of the situations at times: "We need to infiltrate this base to prevent the Empire from establishing a foothold in this territory, this is very important and has grave consequences if left unchecked." While fucking Grocery Store music plays.

Been disappointed with the music in general so far. (FFT had the best FF music imo.)

Other than that, this is one of my favorite FF's, for sure.

Fuck those imperial stalkers. They making my quest on Dino's amethyst stone harder. Lol
They really fucked up with timing on that stuff. They need to release a patch that tones it down because it is ridiculous. Also f that quest. The stone isn't even technically in the circle on your mini map.

First FF for me since X. I am really liking it so far.

Few questions.

Can I only scan enemies in "wait" fight mode?

Selling items, what category can I sell without worry? Do items vary depending on buyer ? Do all items have a purpose? Or are some just ment to sell for Gill?

What happens when I fill my 99 elemental inventory? Does casting spell deplete that?

Thanks

Any help? This is buried a few pages in.

I guess it take 3 years to stitch together a bad game. Same amount of time to make a good game.....

Oh, I'm not saying they are good at managing their time.

I mean you only have to look at the fact this took 10 years in total to show that, lol.

I don't imagine all of that 3 years will have been for game development though. If it's anything like XIII, the post-mortem seemed to suggest only 2 years at most were spent actually developing that game out of the 4/5 years the game was in development. The rest of that time was engine developing/tuning and making designs/models/areas without any plan of how or where it was going to be used. XV could very likely be the same, what with the transfer over to next gen, and the fact they were trying to piece together assets from the old game(Versus XIII).

Project management is clearly not their strong suit.

I hope lessons are learned from this game in general. I'm hoping they are, especially lesson learned in open world game design because I have a feeling SE isn't done with this type of game just yet.

I honeslty dont care if a games story is bad but I have to say the combat I have seen and heard how its played hasn't been to inspiring to me. Holding down a button to attack and dodge seems a bit boring to me. It simply looks OK but obviously I havnt played it yet.

--------------------------------------------

It all looks a bit anime with the stylings of the cast, one note personalities etc. I havn't really been into that sort of thing since my teen years (I watched Attack on Titan recently and its the first anime thing I have bothered to watch in maybe 15 years, i enjoyed it for its concept but the characters I mostly hated lol). Is it strongly like that in this game throughout?

Thanks for the thoughts guys.

No. Ignis randomly Analyzes enemies throughout the fight.

Selling items, what category can I sell without worry? Do items vary depending on buyer ? Do all items have a purpose? Or are some just ment to sell for Gill?
Treasures and food items both have a purpose. When you craft spells you can use these items to enhance your spell (the bottom circle on the Elemancy screen). This can add effects like poisoning enemies, cursing them, adding more charges, or multiple casts per charge. Find effects that you like and keep a few extra of those items.

I'd also keep at least 1-2 of every item, since you might run into a quest that needs an item and you might already have.

What happens when I fill my 99 elemental inventory? Does casting spell deplete that?
You use the different elements to CREATE spells. The more of that 99 that you put into a spell, the higher the power. For instance using 99 Fire to make a spell will give you 3 casts of a 99-power Fire spell. If you ever need more charges, you'll have to go absorb more.

I think imperials have fixed spawn points and some of them are in quests objectives. Two of Dino's quests have their objectives in an imperial spawn, for example.

That Amethyst quest, I died once and went there several times in different days. In all of them, imperials spawned, and when I killed them, they came back over and over.

Yeah, there is definitely spawn spots, it isn't random.

One of the Dog Tag quests was on one of them and that was a pain. Between the normal spawning enemies, the troops dropping, and the fact it turned night-time and then caused daemons to spawn in the circle. That wasn't a fun quest.

I agree. It badly need of a patch on this. It's getting annoying especially since they are like 10 soldiers you are fighting with. They even have a mechanism with it sometimes. Lol

Two questions. Firstly where's that triple xp hotel? Secondly is there something I'm missing with the fishing? It's hard as hell and now some dude wants me to catch a fish that only shows at dusk or dawn which seems unreasonable given how hard it is to hook anything.

Fuck sake with this story

oqRsNJs.gif

Everything really IS off screen.
LMAO I was legit thinking this so far. It's the only big issue I have with the game early in chapter 4. Where the fuck are the cinematics Tabata? Even some of their non-cinematic convos seem like they end early when he gets his
headaches
in chapter 3.

And the dude with purple hair. No body can tell me the guy doesn't have the Seymour 2.0 vibes from FFX. :D

Literally every scene gets cut short other than maybe one or two IMO. Can't agree on Seymour though. Hated that guy and I love Ardyn
as a villain

Maybe you gonna love the battle system, maybe you gonna hate. But it's definitely not boring, belive me
And except for the visuals (specially the hair) there's almost nothing "anime" on the game

And if you want a general opinion, I don't remember the last time that I had so much fun playing a game. Run with a chocobo through the world feels incredible, the dungeons are the best of any JRPG, and the character interactions make you care about them

Beat the game. Ending was fine, but the game's story is really like five hours long and it didn't earn the payoff. It also wasn't enough to make up for chapter 13. Yeesh.

Feels like every element of this game had serious issues. Impressed it all came together in a 7 or 8 out of 10 package. I think I said it earlier, it's a lot better than the sum of it's parts. But it's going to age terribly. This game is going to savaged in the retrospectives.

Also the song of the game is Stand By Me. Sorry, Yoko.

Throw the line, give a quick press on R2 to pull the line a little. Then do that again, and again until you got the fish hooked

Just keep doing the comands on screen and pull the line until you see the message about tension, then stop pulling the line and just keep doing the comands. When the message about tension stop, go back to pulling the line

I got to chp14 at lvl 41 but everything now is way high lvl for me. I cant even progress! Am I fcked? Or am I just doing something wrong?

My last hard saves are at chp 6 and 9.

You can go back to the open world at camp and you can run away from a lot of the higher level enemies.

Thanks for your thoughts. I guess it is a very divisive game.

Will prob pick it up eventually but when im this unsure I dont tend to want to spend more than £25 on a game.

Can someone give me some tips for the combat? Lock on, don't lock on?

I'm pressing circle to attack and holding it.

Dodging sucks because there aren't really any queues to see when you're fighting 4 or 5 enemies at a time.

Should I involve the people in my party a bit more?

Should I use more potions?

Should I try playing this more like a Dark Souls game?

Seems like the combat is all over the place in this game...

Nah, because this has the opposite problem of FF13. All of the horrible parts are at the end instead of the beginning.

Not worth buying, imo. Last half of the game is the worst garbage I've ever had the misfortune of playing. The only reason I'm trudging along is because I have enjoyed the gameplay and want to get to the final dungeons, and I've invested too much time to stop from getting there.

This game is 3 or 4/10. Don't know how it reviewed so well. Fucking awful.

Even if you like the gameplay, the last chapters are so fucking awful.

Jesus christ. It's an insult to gamers everywhere.

Every battle works like this for me.

Use wait mode. Scan enemies to find out their weakness. Try to find an enemy that is separated from the group and warp to them. Beat on them till they are dead. Wait for wait mode to kick in. Find a rest spot to warp to. Wait for wait mode to kick in and repeat.

Also get the technique that heals the group.

This is where I am, too, even though I wouldn't rate it as harshly. But I agree with all of your points.

The second half was actually the part I enjoyed the most, since at least something was actually happening. It didn't play great and without set-up the story didn't really work, but it was better than the big, boring nothingness of the first half.

No more side quests for me. Just going straight main story from here on out. I'm still on CH 3 but I was doing the quests in order by level. Can't take it anymore though.

Well this is my first FF, so I'm not particularly burdened with comparing it to previous entries. I'm just taking as it is. I definitely can't overlook its flaws, but I've greatly enjoyed what I've played so far. And I like the second half so far despite how relatively short it's been, but then again I guess that's because shit is happening lmao, despite it being pretty nonsensical.

Completely agree with this. I think some people are still experiencing the highs of finally getting the game, as well as the initial open world part of the game.

Once most people have finished it and the dust has had some time to settle, I think people's opinions will sour. I basically see this as another Dragon Age: Inquisition situation.
