Final Fantasy XV |OT| There and back again.

I'm at level 75 and reached about 57 hours of game time. Beat the main story at about 40 hours since I spent most of the time grinding and doing side quests. My criticisms are some of the bigger fights were underwhelming, the main game was too short and the game felt rushed in some areas.

In spite of all of that this is easily my GOTY and one of my favorite FF's ever. I would love a FFXV-2 if that's in the cards. I can't believe I'm saying this: I now find myself hyped for the FF7 remake and I'm looking forward to whatever Square Enix does next. After an entire console generation of the putrid XIII trilogy I can safely say they won me back.

Didn't think something would top Doom for me this year, but FFXV did. And it's kinda funny how they're sorta similar in having long ass development and feeling unique in this AAA gaming landscape.
 
Playing the FFX/XIII soundtracks works so well in this game. In-fact the ability to play old game soundtracks is such a nice addition overall. Makes me want to revisit the old games at some point in the future.

Ok some of this post game stuff is pretty awesome and I'm not even sure it's all post game only. One really random thing happened at night. I was fighting a couple red giants when a drop ship filled with guards came down. Things were getting a bit hairy then another ship pulls up overhead.
This time it's Aranea dropping in to give us a hand on the way past
That was a cool touch and saved my ass.

Then eventually I headed back to Hammerhead. I've been through the area a lot in the post game already just cleaning up any quests below lv 30 and never seen this before. So again, I'm fighting red giants on the road to Duscae when out now nowhere
the huge bird thing from chapter 1 drops down right next to us.
Had to run as individually they would give me a challenge let alone tag teaming me.

I hope to find more random stuff like this in the parts I've yet to explore. He'll I've not even looked around Altissia yet. My post game experience is a much better one than the story so far.

I think VIII's soundtrack fits a lot better. Driving around with Blue Fields or Balamb Garden, or exploring the caves with Find your Way.

Just amazing.

One enemy that freaked me out was
at the start of chapter 14 when you get out of the beach restaurant bit and go on the road, under the bridge there's some crazy demon that's like level 90, I was like noooooo
 
I recommend going through a dungeon and playing all the Dissidia 012 remixes of all the dungeon themes, starting with Matoya's Cave. Only problem is they're all really short, but they're damn good.

Lots of items. If you want to mitigate damage try perfect the counter timing, his window is one of the smaller ones so its a bit tougher than usual. Try get a feel for his attacks and press dodge as a cue rather than hold so you can get around him faster for back attacks. Same with double pressing dodge to get around him. Abuse link abilities to regroup.

These techniques work on basically all bosses too. If you're still dying too fast spend some AP in the stats tab.
 
At first I was like oh why do people hate chapter 13? After a while I was like yeah okay thats why lol. I do like the game so far though its not terrible but Its alright. Game is challenging but fun. A lot of side quests do get boring but I have been liking the characters.
 
What's the deal with the
covenant?


You never really gather all six - Ifrit is apparently a dick who hates humans and is on Ardyn's side somehow. Also, somehow Ifrit is able to go toe to toe with Bahamut, who isn't even a dragon and can't be summoned outside of that battle.



They took two big set pieces in the game but it doesn't seem like the summons are really anything integral to the story.
 
So I'm level 42 on Ch. 14 thinking of activating either Point-Blank Warp-Strike or Airdance. Which you guys think would come more in handy for the time being..??

I've been sticking to a lot of FFXIII soundtracks. That game never deserved such a good OST and I'd say I liked the trilogy for the most part. Crossing into Duscae with Dust to Dust playing was very satisfying.

Now if only I could work out where in the menu you use the mp3 player I'd be set. Bought the damn thing ages ago too

Airdance. I got that very early on, made the game ecen more incredible for me once paired up with Osmostrike.

Wait, I just got to
Altissia
and supposedly there's the 3x Exp hotel here. However, upon starting the chapter my accumulated exp gets turned into levels and there seems to be no way off

? How am I supposed to hoard XP when I can't leave the city to do sidequests? Or can I?
 
I am about 25 hours in and I'm starting to realize that a lot of these side quests are not getting any better.

I would have expected that some of them by now would lead you to dungeons, but those kinds of quests seem far and few between.

I just phased the whole time and let Gladio Tempest them. :( When it got down to 2 of them, I used Prompto's Piercer for accuracy lol. Wasp mobs are fucking stupid. Hell, half the hunts involving mobs are dumb as shit because there's no way you can land more than five blows without getting interrupted. Very poor crowd control tools outside of magic, not to mention there are too many types of difficult-to-see hits that make you fall back.

It honestly could have been the most fun combat system ever, but there's just too many rough edges. I really resent Tabata for telling the team to make enemies move as naturally as possible without considering the gameplay consequences.

Yeah 21 hours in and I'm getting tired of the fetch quests. I'm already apparently good enough to fight the final boss too (not surprising since the main story is 3 seconds long) and I'm at the very beginning of Chapter 5.

Only side content I think are worth my time now are the hunts and the optional dungeons.

Use Umbra to go back to the open world at Lucis. You can summon him at the hotels.

. Where did this come from? Why? The game's story and missions are such a random string of nonsense that I just turned off my PS4 because it was starting to frustrate me.

The whole game is an endless series of fetch quests, and now that I have to run around like an asshole in chapter 5 and
touch 3 archstones which are all a mile away from each other
I'm done for today.


I played for 20+ hours so there are absolutely redeeming qualities to this game, I guess I've played too much of it in a short period of time or something.

This is my favorite series. I even enjoyed XIII.

But I was so upset with Chapter 4. I was worried that the game was sucking me in too much so I guess Chapter 4 did me a favor. Very easy to write a wall of text on Chapter 4's nonsensical events alone.


Also, lol @ me for thinking this game was going to clear up unanswered questions from Kingsglaive.

If it's selected in the menu, whenever you are in battle, make no movements at all and then you can select different beasts, different parts of them, and scan them for information using Libra. It's been immensely helpful to me since the camera can hamper battles sometimes.

Every time you switch Chapters, you will level up. So just stop your story progress, go back to Lucis, hoard and hoard EXP and then use Umbra to go back to Altissia, use the hotel and enjoy. :)
 
I thought Chapter 4 was ok. The weirdest part was Gladio getting so unnecessarily pissed at Noctis just for whining. It was so bizarre.
 
So nobody seems to have figured this out yet, or at least I haven't seen it:

If you're having trouble with "X" being the "Interact" button, you can actually halfway treat the game like it's using the Japanese "O/X" swap.
Whenever you see that little diamond on the screen that denotes an Interaction Point, you can let go of the Analog Stick and hold "O" and Noct will automatically walk into range of that point, ignoring any others in the area.
Then, while still holding "O," hit "X" to "confirm" once you see the prompt.

You'll never randomly jump again, and it's actually super smooth and reliable once you get used to it.
This is even superior to the Japanese version, since it's got a sort of "two-step" confirmation to the action, whereas the JP version would have you instantly interact with the object/person the moment you were in range.

Similarly, you can hold "X" to dismount a Chocobo before it actually comes to a complete stop.
People keep complaining it takes forever to get off them, but you can have Noct hop off while they're still at a decent trot.

Just experiment before whining.

But how and where do I select it in the menu? Is it a skill?

I must have jumped a hundred times before hopping on a chocobo, pushing a button or opening a door. I will definitely try this out.
 
Quick Chapter 3 plot question:

At the start of the game, we're on a road-trip to a different city to pick up Lunafreya, right? But then everyone starts acting as though she was in Insomnia during the attack and is now missing presumed dead. How could she be in Insomnia when it was attacked if we're going on a road-trip to meet her somewhere else? Have I missed something?

While I do agree that Gladio was harsh, I think it connects with the small moment they had before fighting Titan. The Amicitia family have acted as shields/bodyguards for the Royal family for ages. In Gladio's words, their work is to focus when Royalty cannot, but they must also make Royalty to have focus themselves.

Noctis had all the right to be mopey after all he's been through, but to Gladio this meant Noctis was still unable to assume the responsibilities of a King. He was harsh, but it's basically his job to be harsh.
 
This third fish side-quest... That fucker I need to catch took three of my baits! I saved right before so I just loaded up but damn this is hard as hell.
 
Haha, so I took some time out to go to Crestholm Channels, and was having an incredibly tough time fighting the
Nagarani with all its status effects. Well, turns out that Ring of the Lucii came in very handy.
 
I can't get over how ripped the combat feels from FF Type-0, and that's not a negative. The relatively light action style was one of the high points of an otherwise awkward title. XV takes some evading to automatic but costs MP, but has the same attack style and even the same quirk of there being so many different weapons available to use overall in different ways. Doubt I can talk anyone new into playing Type-0 (nor do I wish to force it on anyone), but at least I have something to point to when I explain to people why I actually liked it. Same general style of long, narrow dungeon set pieces, too. Feels good!

Unrelated, but wow, multicast -ra magic is cheating. I had to stop equipping a magic so I wasn't tempted to use it for instant wins vs groups of stuff. Do love how you harm allies with the area ground effect!
