I think
she was being handed over to the Empire, and they were allowing her to make her speech and wake Leviathon. For reasons..... I honestly have no idea what the empire's goal is.

We could have done with a few cutscenes of goings on in the capital, much like Vayne with the judges in XII.

She's being handed over to the empire. Those are magitek troopers. The speech is to calm the citizenry.
As for the waking of Leviathan, there are multiple parties at play with this: Luna wants to give Noctis power, Ravus wants to kill Leviathan so that Luna doesn't die, and Ardyn wants everyone in this situation to suffer which basically entails Noctis killing Leviathan and gaining the blessing. Either way someone wants Leviathan to be summoned for some reason or another, and to do this requires civilian evacuation and a notion of its happening, hence the speech.

speech
was by choice.

Yeah I noticed that :p

Maybe the soldiers wanted to escort her to leviathan?

Ah ok, got it. Reading the Wiki about this story is going to be really good.

I'm convinced the story itself is good, we just don't see it all.

Question to chapter 9:

So, there was this scene, right?

Who are this people? Seriously, I didn't get it. (I'm talking about the soldiers, not Lunafreya.)

The fight against the
Titan
and against the
Leviathan
where completely bullshit in terms of gameplay, or have I done something wrong?

I didn't had the feeling that I control Noctis at all. :-(

No you did nothing wrong sir. Those fights are objectively badly designed.

Levaithan
fight is basically much worse Jafar boss from KH2 and I hate Jafar fight

Yeah, I wish the fights were more like
Ifrit
, where only a few climax moments in the fight become flashy QTE's rather than the entire fight consisting of easy QTEs/overpowered mechanics.

I wouldn't go that far. I liked
Titan
, but the camera messed me up, and I experianced too much jank with the
Leviathan
fight that I couldn't appreciate the specticle. I wouldn't mind replaying those fights tbh, but I always dread fighting kh2 Jafar again >.<'

Yeah, I agree to this. The
Ifrit battle
was legit amazing (even if I think it could have been a touch harder) and the spectacle-battles should have been more "gameplay aware" like that fight was.

I actually liked these super boss battles...
Titan, Leviathan

It's more or less like the God of War mega boss battles, spectacular.

Well GoW have better ones, but these were ok...

I know that there is another one with
Ifrit
but I'm still in Chap 12. Can't wait to see how it is.

My brother ran into some pretty weird glitches on Costlemark Tower. He used regroup when doing the block puzzles and ended up at the other side of the wall, which put him in a weird spot with bottomless pits. He jumped over the pits and somehow managed to get back on track, but that was pretty weird.
same thing happened to me, with Glady. ending up on the otherside of the wall and into a bottomless pit. then my party gets kicked out of a dungeon ala warp.

Doing the block puzzle in
Costlemark Tower, and there's this small ass room absolutely filled with those electro-balls and two of those samurai guys. What the fuck was that.
that part took up so many potions and revives, they would let me back up. a summons came but i couldn't execute it.

i finally beat the costle and felt relieved. i didn't go to sleep for a week and saved up about 300K of experience and went to the 3x hotel and leveled up from 55 to 76.

i think i'm running out side quests to do. so i'm going to continue on to chapter 12-13

This is the problem with the game. There's a good story in here but there just isn't enough exposition to understand the events that are going on. Chapter 9 should have been way more fleshed out than it was. Same with Chapter 1.

Basically think of it this way:

Magic:
- Unless potency is super super high, don't worry about hurting your team. The worst thing you will do is incapacitate them for a while. Magic can be very good when very crowded. Costlemark, for example, is beyond crowded and doing it without magic is nearly impossible.
- If you are really worried about your team, use Regroup and the use the spell, otherwise I'd just fire away.

Heal Items:
- Potions: only heal up to half your hp, and doesn't heal bleed damage (so your max hp won't change)
- Hi-potions: heal all HP but likewise won't change your max HP.
- Elixirs: acts like Hi-potions, but can also restore up to half of your max HP. They also fully restore MP
- Hi-elixir: will fully restore you.
- Mega-potion: acts as a Hi-potion for the whole group.
- Megalixers: acts as Hi-elixer but for the whole group.
- Phoenix down: acts like Hi-elixir. You can used them whether you are downed or not. Only Phoenix downs can be used to rise allies who are KO or yourself .
- Mega-Phoenix: acts like Phoenix Down, but for whole party. Think of them as more versatile megalixirs.

All other consumables have benefits too ranging from nullifying MP costs to enabling auto dodging. Play around with them.

Royal Arms:
- Having them equipped is good regardless of if you use them or not. Many have good buffs (and some trade offs) for equipping them. All royal arms use HP when hitting enemies, but can offer consistent high damage since no enemy is strong to them. Use them however you want, though. Its up to you.

Thanks for this, I had no idea! I kept wondered why fights in dungeons were wearing me down so much and why my guys would walk around with low HP all the time. I didn't think of using elixers.

I'm missing a lot of stuff in general because of the small font which just isn't readable from my couch without using the PS4's zoom function (my vision is better than 100%).

I'm just on chapter 5 now and...spoilers:
I don't understand at all what happened after the Titan fight. Ardyn picked up Noctis and co. with his imperial craft and could do what he wanted, but there we are in th emiddle of chocoboville. Not a word about what just happened and all they took is the Regalia. There are roadblocks which serve no purpose I can come up with except finding Noctis, but why go through all that trouble if they already had me?

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
I think XII is where it gets divisive before falling off a cliff. I loved the story of XII.

I thought XII's story was boring as hell. Like I'd rank the story the worst among XIII and XV.

Game just falls apart the last few chapters, chapter 13 shouldn't exist in that capacity. The only time my game froze was in chapter 13 as well.

I'd rather have waited another year so they can actually finish it.

That's fair enough, I did say it was divisive lol. I think I got into the grandiose wannabe Shakespearean plot and dialogue, it was a great translation with the best VO in the series. I also like the politics so it was interesting for me, plus it made sense which XIII and XV arguably don't.

Final boss meh though.

Can I get a quick rundown of what this game/gameplay is like? Only FF I've played is Tactics, and always had about zero interest in the series, but these GIFs

peaked my interest

I always thought these games were turn-based. This one is an open world character action ARPG? Are there different cities and towns to explore? You have a flying car? Will I be completely lost having not played the others?

You only get that flying car after you beat the game. Even then it's kinda restricted to where it can fly as you will hit invisible walls and if you land badly literally it's game over....

There are two big cities but they appear much later in the game.

Reached and finished chapter 13.
So that's why no one likes it !!

Gameplay wise it was like half an hour longer than it should have been but the ending of it once you get the bros back is pretty enjoyable. The boss is also one of the better ones in the main quest in that it actually feels like a true boss fight and not some scripted cinematic encounter.

It's really the story that bothered the most here. During the whole game you can tell the Frankenstein nature of the game but all in all I think it still manages to get a decent and coherent story. But chapter 13 is really where it all falls apart.
Luna's brother was good then?..I think??? It's like he had a whole character arc off camera.

Prompto was made or experimented on in the laboratory ? Or something like that . This "revelation" comes out of nowhere , we are given no context or explanation, and after the 2 min cutscenes they never bring it up again (at least so far)

The whole empire fell to the demons? And the emperor was turned into one ? (I think). Again feels like a giant plot development that just happend in the background and off camera.

It was also unfinished. But despite its severe flaws at least by the end I understand what was going on.
Even now, despite having tried multiple times, I fail to see what ffxiii party's big plan was towards the end. "Let's keep doing what the villain wants us to do, surely it'll work out? YEAH, we don't need no plans!" "How come the world is not destroyed and we are alive? A wizard did it!"

I won't be too spoilery but lets just say this about where you are in the story now:
Ravus, who controls the Army and Ardyn who controls basically everything else have VERY different agendas.

When people talk about how the story's narrative doesn't work, that scene is actually not one of the things that people point out :p

Noct's abilities are so cool.

I just wish his abilities were attached to a battle system with actual good core gameplay.

It was full of random political mumbo jumbo and lack of memorable characters only added icing to the cake.

Loved the opening though, the CG definitely ranks in Top FF CG openings.

Thanks guys! Guess I'm in for quite a ride then :p I just find it odd that the game never pointed out (unless I missed it) that
they play such different roles in Niflheim.
And I even watched Kingsglaive! >_>

The problem with FFXII was that all of the build up in the first half of the game didn't lead to any new interesting directions in the latter half. It just plodded forward towards an inevitable outcome, with some exposition along the way.

Yeah that's a fair assessment, it was probably due to the troubled development, and the story is technically unfinished. I think the games director was ill and had to be replaced? With that in mind I think they did a great job of bringing it to a conclusion that made sense.

Still no ETA on the Dec. patch?

Cutting it a bit fine aren't they? Surely they'll be going away for Christmas breaks soon.

Jump festa is in a couple of days.
English voicework for the holiday dlc is done.
expect news on things soon.

i wouldn't expect the patch pre-christmas, but i do expect it pre-newyears

So they are planning a "Holidays" DLC update this month? I am so confused. I still need to wrap this baby up, didn't get a chance to play yesterday and might not tonight either.

So, I did that level 50 dungeon in Leide yesterday. It was actually pretty easy, because I guess the recommended level is nothing but the boss level, which makes sense, since you can sprint past most enemies anyway, but yeah.

Really well designed dungeon, I loved exploring it and all of the shortcuts and ways to continue from where you left off in case you needed to save, maybe heal and eat something for the buffs. Too bad the dungeon itself offered no challenge to make the player use that, but it's really cool. I'm assuming the shortcuts are extremely useful for people who went there very early on just to get items and ran away from the boss. They can just go back straight to the boss later.

Bow of the Clever is the first Royal Arm I'm actually enjoying using, it's a lot of fun. I love how I can use it to approach a group of enemies while dealing damage, and when I'm close I can do the attack, pause and switch to Greatsword, attack again for Tempest and huge AoE damage. It's awesome.

Today I'm gonna do that waterfall main quest, just to progress a little bit, then it's back to exploring and side question on that region of the map that I still didn't visit.

Also did the Prompto tour
trying to take a picture of Cidney
, that was so awesome! Hahaha. From what I've seen later, though, I didn't get the coolest ending, but it was good enough. I'll pick different options on NG+.

In a lot of cases, yes. But Chapter 9 was explained enough imo.

You roughly know Ardyn's intentions from what happened with Titan and there's even a scene sign Ardyn and Ravus talking which shows his intention to try to save Luna (And there has been heaps of stuff up to this point which suggests holding covenant with the Archaens comes at a large price).

Got to the start of chapter 13, gotta say I was honestly sadder about
the Regalia breaking down than I was about Luna's death.

Me too, I was like 'finally some recognition!'
He hardly mentioned his dad after his death. It was a nice moment, and sad.

LOL. If you played the thing you'd know why they can't really "fix" it.

Finished! Well, the main game, plenty of post-game content to dig into when I get back from Holiday travel.

Re the final chapter (some serious spoliers):
Wow, a lot of high points in this. Great atmosphere, Ifrit and Ardyn make awesome enemies, two of the most fun fights in the game for me so far. With airdance and a good loadout, I really felt like I was in control of both battles, lots of air battle, dodging, strategic warp strikes, etc. The use of the pictures in the ending was smart, and very emotionally affecting. Along with Crisis Cores' slot wheel break, I really do feel Tabata has a gift for making incidental mechanics pay off big time at endgame. I still don't really get what happened though. Noctis sacrificed himself to... summon KoTR to kill Ardyn a second time, and somehow THAT cleared the plague of stars? Was Ardyn like the devil? Was he somehow responsible for the eternal night? Why do parasitic infections affect the day/night cycle anyway? What was with the last scene w/ Noct/Luna? The afterlife? A dream of what could have been? What's the role of the crystal in the plague of stars? I felt like I paid attention, and I've seen all the extra content, but I'm still vague on all these points.

Generally speaking, I like this game a lot. The world was fun to explore. The dungeons were well designed. The battle system is a lot of fun, and after 65 hours, I'm liking it more and more. When you have all the tools at your disposal and they become more intuitive to use you can pull off some fluid and fantastic looking fights. The main four were good characters, and great work was put into developing their relationship through the journey. As most noted, this was a high point. The summons are jaw dropping and I liked their implementation. Not knowing when they'll pop and then having them show up to save the day is always satisfying. I loved cruising in the car.

On the less positive side, there is just no denying that the story delivery in this game was all over the map. So much happens off screen, and there's very little coherent flow from most chapters to the next. This leads to a strange disconnect between what you spend most of your time doing, and what's actually happening in the story. The stakes feel much lower than they are because of this. I liked the cold open (minus Ch. 0), but not enough was done to provide coherent context to the journey, and the pacing was too stilted. I found it much like XII and XIII, in that I liked some of the characters, liked the broad strokes of the story, but did not feel a cohesive and well paced journey emerged, as in X, IX, VII, VI, and IV. I didn't feel this was due to the failing of any particular chapter, but rather the way the game was built from the ground up. It privileged world and set piece and emergent characterization, not plot delivery.

This is what I hope they most work on for VIIR and XVI. I think Kitase is the SE director who has best been able to deliver this feeling of being on a genuine epic journey in the past, so his heavy involvement with VIIR gives me good hope that they'll re-realize that feeling with that game in a fresh way. But I don't think Tabata or Toriyama quite have the mojo on that front.

I'll need more time to think about where I'd rank it overall. I do think it was a promising move post XIII trilogy, but SE has a ways to go to get back to the glory days. Story telling story telling story telling! There were great moments in XV that suggest they can do it, but they just have to be strung together in a better way to deliver the full classic FF experience.

For now, I'd place it somewhere around here in my rankings: VI, VII, X, IV, (Tactics), IX, XIVRR, XII, XV, V, XIII, (X-2), I, III, (XIII-2), VIII, II, (LR).

Don't get your hopes up :p

Kitase was also heavily involved in the FFXIII trilogy and look at how it turned out.

I don't believe he took a leading role on storyboarding/plot execution though. This may be wishful thinking, but after his brilliant work earlier in the series (seriously, I think he's a better director than Gooch, or at least has been), I feel he must have been either A. phoning it in, or B. really taking his producer role as about high level facilitation, and not nitty gritty game execution.

I honestly think the earlier FFs were all great because of the teamwork. Pinning their success on a single individual isn't the way to go here.

For example, FFX had like 3 directors. Motomu Toriyama (event), Takayoshi Nakazato (map), Toshirou Tsuchida (battle). Kitase was the producer for it.

The Sakaguchi era FFs were great in this aspect but after that, everything seems to have fallen apart. FFXV gives me hope that they are on the right track so hopefully the next mainline games manage to reach the heights of FFVI to FFX.

Yeah I think they have something solid to build on. Considering the nightmare development it had, they did a great job with it. I think they know full well what the weaknesses are and will address it in upcoming games. I imagine they are looking forward to putting it behind them and starting on a fresh project, whatever that is.

Is it crazy to hope for a medieval setting for XVI? It's probably already in the works (early scenario stage anyway), I just hope they don't announce anything until it is 1 year out minimum. So an announcement in 2018/2019. Although with VII remake, could we be waiting until 2020 for a XVI announcement?

Medieval is what was hinted by Verendus (RIP) so take it as what it is.

But that said, don't expect a return to turn-based, but not flashy action like XV either. The best part of each of the FF games is that they always try to innovate and improve the combat system so it is not the same for every mainline game.
