Man I'm really debating if I want to promote Eliwood to 5*. His high resistance is really attractive to me since many of my units only have average RES at best save for the few mages I use. However he's +SPD, -HP so that good RES is weakend by the fact his HP will be lower.

You could patch up the -HP with an HP seal. That's why -HP is one of the banes that's easier to stomach.

On the other hand, I don't know how good a high res red unit will be because of how common blue mages are. You'd do great against Julias and all the green blade tome users though, especially with +spd to help defend against doubles.

EDIT: Why are there so many people running one unit on defence?
Off the top of my head, you only need one decent defence per week so after that, maybe people field one unit out of spite to limit the points the enemy can get from fighting them that round? Don't know if it works that way though.

Either that or, as you describe, perhaps people are using the quirk of arena assault deciding difficulty for the whole assault based on your first team if you send one unit in, and they have the first team set as the defence team by default.

The skill has its uses for sure, but I just pointed out one of several instances where it causes the attacker to die when the opponent counter attacks. Desperation bypasses this problem, but you can't really count it always being active.

Therefore, I think that Fury 3 and Deathblow 3/Darting Blow 3 are both superior to Life and Death 3.

I wouldn't recommend Life and Death on Brave Bow Cordelia either way, for the key reasons you describe - the only justification for this over Death Blow is if the player is intending to quad more, but 35 base speed doesn't really justify that anyway.

Life and Death does make sense however on Firesweep Bow Cordelia.
Catria is the best Brave/Firesweep flier to make use of it, and it makes sense on mages lacking a bit of speed like Delthea, Tharja, Katarina, and Mae. It's also a good option on Celica besides Fury.
 
I like life and death on Bride Cordelia. A lot of these challenge maps and Tempest Trials are riddled with mid speed non DC units that she can Quad and remove.

Game has become a little less about optimizing just for Arena.

They could've done Spur Attack or Hone Speed, or something that her weapon doesn't have.

It's not quite the same. Hone Atk buffs at the start of the turn, and Cymbeline needs her to attack, and buffs afterwards.

With both she can buff at the beginning or in the middle of your turn.

Bah, last chain battle for that Squad Ace B seal is boning me. I keep making one big mistake on the last map, like forgetting to pack Rehabilitate on my healer.

I'll get it eventually, but it's taking more tries than I thought.

4772, chickened out on one battle with a horse lead and dropped to intermediate but otherwise all advanced and didn't even need an item. Made it to the final round with Xander, Rein, TA MRobin, and Azura. I was ready for anything on that last battle.

Discovered at some point I had put swordbreaker on my 4* Abel. He absolutely destroyed a Ryoma. Didn't even use Nowi.

For 5*s I have exactly 7 reds to deal with Hector each round (Eirika, Roy, Marth, Masked Marth, Lucina, Olivia, Xander) and I've got 6 hard Rein soakers (S!Elise, Nino, Julia, Titania, Fae, 4* Cecilia) which is soon to be 7 once I finish Camilla. My blue stable is awesome and also counts 7 (Linde, Nowi, Peri, Mathilda, Hinoka, Camus, Azura) and then a ton of specialists like Jaffar, Kageo, TA MRobin, Lachesis (wrathful staff). I can basically field a rainbow team each round if I need to, so this hasn't been as hard as I thought it would be, but its a fun mental exercise and the best content in the game by far. I think it'll be significantly harder if they do no defense tiles next week. Not being able to park some 4*s on defense tiles to soak up some blows is going to make it harder.

Alright, with the Arena Assault being a thing, I feel like I need to build some optimal teams to have a chance here, especially now that I have a decent selection of 5* units, all ~Lv. 40:

I've been pretty lucky with their IVs for the most part (nothing seriously negative outside of my -ATK 4* Rein), but outside of movesets and whatnot, what are some good general team combos with some of these units? My notable 4* units (also around 40) are:

Effie
Eirika
Xander
Zephiel
Camus
Cecilia
(M) Robin
(F) Corrin
Olivia
Cherche
Kagero

Personally, Faye/Azura/Nino/Marth has been an interesting combo for me. Faye Firesweeps out mages, and I gave her Poison Strike to whittle down armored units as well while Threatening Defense. Azura still has a lot of SP to go, but she buffs attack while Singing, naturally. Nino acts as my nuke, and Marth is essentially my healer via Reciprocal Aid/Renewal 3/Falchion.
 
Upped my arena assault score to 4758 after lots of tries. Bumped me up about 1400 spots. But even in the last few hours I've dropped down 100 to around rank 3900. I'm hoping that won't keep happening. Without the limit of stamina and dueling swords there's no reason for it to take a few days for people to complete a chain. Which of course also means people with time and/or patience can keep going until they do it, so who knows. I don't know if I have the willpower to try again and stay all advanced.

Unfortunately I'm woefully unprepared for Horse Emblem. Reinhardt mostly. I'm just very short on greens. The only one I have worth a damn is Nino. Cherche is alright, but she has a lot of limitations with weakness to bows, reds, any magic user, and speed low enough that everybody doubles her. I have a couple, like Merric and Anna that can soak up the damage, but they are very weak otherwise, and fielding 7 teams means I'm stretched pretty thin and don't often have good support unit or position skills.

My Julia, Sonya, Hector farming without success will hopefully end differently with hero fest. Just Julia would make a ton of difference as a guaranteed Reinhardt check. Instead of three rounds I can almost always win unscathed (Horse Emblem, Nino team, and first round), I'll have four.

Would Death Blow be sufficient on a +Spd Clair or does she need the extra speed from Swift Sparrow or Life and Death? I rather not use L&D cause I want her to be able to take some magic hits.

Hmm actually what speed thresholds should I be hitting.

Final orbs I had (literally brought me to 0), Summer Corrin get. +HP/-RES which is okay, at least it's not -ATK and -SPD.

Took me close to 270 Orbs to pull her though, damn it. I wanted that art, as well as access to a blue flier of course.

I'm tempted to roll for Celica or Delthea but I'll wait until tomorrow for the Hero Fest before wasting my orbs trying to get Ike. What would be the best way to roll for him? Is it better to roll red units specifically, or should I spend all 20 orbs? On one hand, rolling for only red units would allow me more chances. On the other hand, since I'm just starting out, 20 orbs can help me fill up my roster with decent units, or provide ones with good abilities.

Shame about the -SPD, but +ATK is great, so it kind of balances out? Still any Summer Corrin is better than no Summer Corrin!

Yeah, I'm still thinking about building her with good skills. I can negate the -Spd with various abilities and maybe a sacred seal. I think I can get her speed back to around 36, which is one less point than a neutral speed IV. I'm not sure if she'll have enough firepower to justify the loss of speed, but I can test it out.

Check map button is a godsend. Could finish a 7 victory streak but only at 4219 points or so. Still, that's pretty nice considering I can't even form 7 lv 40 teams lol.
 
Check map at the bottom of the unit select screen after you select an opponent.

Didn't realize I'd have to beat 1 team first

Arena Assault takes way too long to get through with how much I have to juggle my level 40 units. It's cool to have something to just bang through though. Plus no bonus units.

Pretty curious what the coins get you.

I have the same IVs on my Summer Corrin,+Atk puts her at basically the same Atk as Spring Camilla, who one-shots just about everything with a regular Blade tome. So with a Blarblade+ she should be more or less unstoppable.

More hunting for a dragon riding a dragon, and I end up with... +Spd Clair... and +Spd Azura! Not quite when I wanted her, but I'm not complaining about finally getting Azura.

Was thinking of skipping this banner all together since I already got Ike and honestly didn't think i needed any more greens since I got a fully SI'd Nino and Sonya but after playing arena assault i found out quick that i'm severely lacking in the green department.

Did a bit of whaling, and finally got Summer Corrin! +Res/-Spd. Well it's not like I have a Hinoka to really use her anyway. Maybe she'll want Darting Blow if I seriously try to build her. Also finally got Klein (4*) and another 5* Karel.

I really wish Kagero instead of Genny as I've got two of her. I'll skip on colorless as I don't need the third although I can always use more death blows, I mean, Klein.

I've got hp+ Julia and res+ Sonya but I can use another Julia hopefully with a better IV.
Kagero will never be in; not 5 star exclusive.

I fully expect to see even more Ike,Julia,Ninian in the arena next few weeks like it was Azura, Ryoma and Hector fest last time.

Oh yeah I finally got what looks like a decent Olivia (+Spd/-Res). Should I merge the buttload I have into this one or should I be looking for a +Atk Olivia?

Filling the same role should not matter with chains stuff.
