I was talking more broadly about attacking options - if we stuck with the 4-3-3 formation those are the players who would be competing for those 3 positions.

I wouldn't say rely on Lukaku or De Bruyne - but they're still excellent options.
I think Malouda should go - Kalou is good as backup but not good enough for the first 11.
I'd keep Drogba but he'd have to be committed enough to appreciate his position on the bench.
Sturridge - well I disagree - I think he has the potential to become a top player for the side, but he needs an extended run of games to develop.
And I would never defend any signing that's over 40 million - I don't know what he was thinking.
I agree with most you're saying (except Sturridge). Note that Falcao is actually cheap: 26M£ for a guy that smashed the European competitions scoring record (17 goals in 14 games during the 2010–11 UEFA Europa League, surpassing Jürgen Klinsmann's previous record of 15 goals).

SSN apparently saying our offer for Villas-Boas was too low and Porto declined.

Rumour was that you'd offered to pay the release clause? Guess not. Also it's whether AVB would join even if the clause was paid, he'd still have the final say on whether he wanted to move or not. I remember him saying about a month ago he wanted to stay at Porto, but he also said he hadn't heard about any formal offers, which this Chelsea one seems to be. Wait and see, I guess.

Here we go again.

If Chelsea can get Villas Boas then it's bad news for the rest of us, great manager and I just can't see him struggling with that team and wealth. It's also a shame because I doubt Abramovich will give him more than a couple of seasons to bed in, unless he becomes a cult figure like Mourinho and less of simply a football manager like Ancelotti.

To be quite honest Chelsea need to get him, because he's the only manager I'd say would do a superior job to Ancelotti, who I still think shouldn't have been sacked.

What are english newspapers saying about Villas Boas and Chelsea? Here in Portugal everyone confirms that he is going to Chelsea, I'm so fucking sad and disapointed... If it's true that he's going to Stamford bridge, money seriously talks!

Stories here seem to suggest nothing is done yet and Chelsea haven't yet met the release clause.

Inevitable though, if Chelsea had made contact you expext Villas Boas is interested and it's only a matter of time until Chelsea pay the required amount.

Well I really really believed he would stay here and do an awesome campaign in the champions league. After all the things he said and also because he is a FC Porto fan too I wasn't really expecting this. I guess being paid 5 millions euros a season is pretty tempting.

Porto just made an official statement that no final offer has been made. Typical Portuguese sports news as usual. This might end up being nothing, and lets not forget even if they do end up paying the 15M€, that's just the "permission" from Porto, Villas Boas still has the final say.

I know but the way people are talking here (FC Porto forums and other sources of information) I think this is serious and it's just a matter of time until everyone confirms the deal... I still hope he says no to Chelsea but like I said, money talks...

PS: You're a Porto fan too right?

I'm hoping Boas stays with Porto. I think he can make a real impact in CL with them and besides, he's a god there, at Chelsea he'd be replaced in a season or two while walking towards the dressing room.

Yes, I am. Apparently they're offering him 5M per season as salary. That's like x5 more then now o0

Hard to say no to that.

DAMN YOU Abramovich!!

Yeah money talks indeed... Dunno who will replace him if he really leaves the club. If he wanted to leave at least he could warn our President so he would hire Domingos or Leonardo Jardim. Leaving the club one week before the official start of the season is really really bad. I'm so sad right now.

Villa-Boas should stay at Porto. Putting together a team like that and having them play that well happens how often? They could do serious damage in the Champions League. He would still earn big bucks if he left next year anyway and he is still young. Look what happened to Del Neri. Idiot had a really good team at Sampdoria, went to Juve, did shit, got fired and now he is on his ass

Juventus U15s 0-0 Newcastle U15s

Juventus have had the better chances, but Newcastle have defended well so far (though haven't really managed to get the ball over the half way line).

Feel sorry for Drogba, that malaria he had seems to have taken 2 years off his career. Just hasn't been the same since returning from it.
12 goals and 15 assists this season prove otherwise

anyway, I'm damn excited about the prospect of Villas-Boas - his age, experience of working with top managers, his achievements with his previous two clubs (whilst admittedly limited are also incredible impressive) also with the fact he knows his way around would lead me to believe he could be the perfect appointment.

Along with Hiddink, and maybe Jose, I can't think of a single other manager I'd rather see at Chelsea right now.

Now SSN saying Chelsea have said they will release a statement in regards to our new coach in the next few days.

Guus or Villas-Boas, I would take either. But if Villas-Boas comes that would be amazing.

Pretty much my thoughts on this too - would love Guus because the way he turned us around post-Scolari was simply incredible, you could tell the players all thought very fondly of him too.

But Villas-Boas is the future, he's young and is probably just what we're after. I also worry that Guus is the sort of manager that enjoys going to a club briefly and taking them, completely shaking them up and turning around their fortunes massively and then leaving again, just as he did with Chelsea, and he's done with many international teams too.

Whoever we get, it's getting exciting now.

We hope to be able to make an announcement regarding the new manager in the next few days or so, but until then we will not be commenting further on the speculation surrounding that appointment

Exciting news to read this morning and seemingly unexpected. If he's our man - and all reports make it seem like he is - then surely this has been in the works over the last week, as Gourlay made it clear that someone would be appointed sooner, rather than later.

And no one would blame him for taking the money next step in his coaching career and making this move. I'm sure he'll also be afforded a decent amount of money to spend on a player or three. I hope this is wrapped up in the next few days so that we can focus on players.

The last time I was excited about a Chelsea manager was when mourinho was announced and I'm getting the same vibes from him. Can't wait.

I'm really hoping AVB and Falcao stay for at least one more season. AVB was pure class when I met him in Dublin and I wish him the best regardless of his decision.

If we close our eyes the problem will just go away.

Why can't FIFA be investigated by proper law enforcement? I know they spout stuff about having an "ethics committee" etc but surely that doesn't mean they're above the law, even if they think they are? Admittedly I'm far from being a lawyer so I don't know, just think it's insane that nothing's been done about this by someone outside of FIFA.

Because then they would just "unaffiliate" that law enforcement's national federation.

Yeah, didn't think of that. Horrible practice by a horrible organisation. Hopefully eventually a breakaway happens, can't see it though after most of the other nations turned against England when the revelations about the corruption came out. Not that the English FA are saints or anything, far from it.

It can be. The International Olympic Committee was investigated by the US Justice Department after that corruption scandal in the '90s involving Salt Lake city. But it'd have to be a concerted effort from the major governments because FIFA plays hardball when a government tries to intervene with the national football association. FIFA sees the National FAs as separate from the government and will ban any particular one if its host country's government gets involved. Citizens of the country don't much care that the government was trying to stamp our cronyism and corruption if it means their team can't take part in any international football tournaments (especially when the government officials are often themselves already corrupt). FIFA also demands certain 'concessions' from host countries which are awarded the rights to host tournaments, like exception from taxes and lawsuits etc. FIFA is essentially a private business and Switzerland is very friendly to such corporations.

Oh wow, we might actually be able to get rid of Paul F. Konchesky? Didn't think anybody would go for him this season.

If the rumors about Joe Cole to Spurs are true (yes, the Metro, I know), then we'd be lifting a massive wage burden on the club. If those two go then I wouldn't even mind Soto's staying on, as at least he proved vaguely useful at times.

Well at least the Konchesky to Newcastle stories went away :lol

I think I would have had a cardiac arrest had that transfer happened.

The Portuguese press is reporting that the AVB transfer is done and that Porto is waiting for the money to be transfered.

With no sources what so ever.

But Alvaro Pereira just said on facebook that the coach has gone to Chelsea >.<

Still nothing concrete being reported in the UK guys but seems to be a matter of time.

Unlucky Porto fans. Feel for you guys, constantly stuck beneath a glass ceiling.

This would take Chelsea's spending on managers alone to £62m, not inc. of wages.
