I'm a little concerned by the Meireles sale talk, he's a good player. Why are we going after the likes of Adam when its a left back and wingers we need? Do we see him growing into Stevies mantle in the long term?

We're still pretty strongly linked with Clichy, Mata, Enrique et al. It's not like Adam will be at the expense of strengthening those positions.

I hope =/

Liverpool selling Meireles is very surprising, if true. He was a very good player for Liverpool last season, doesn't seem to make sense. If it's a selling to buy strategy...does that concern Liverpool fans a bit? Naturally you'll always be raising funds from sales to help boost any existing transfer budget but surely you don't want to be selling your better players?

Pretty sure it's not sell to buy, well not in the sense of we don't have funds unless we sell, anyway. I think it's either that we'd have too many centre mids should Adam arrive, or that FSG is midful of the FFP rules approaching and wants our profit/loss from player sales to be manageable.

I'm not sure why Clichy seems so intent on leaving Arsenal. I could understand it last year when it was Real Madrid were supposedly interested in him. But this summer it's Roma and Liverpool, both finished 6th in their respective leagues (Roma gets Europa League though) and neither are guaranteed to qualify for the Champions League next season, much less challenge for the Championship. I really don't see why he'd sign for either of those clubs.

One of today's papers has Arsenal wanting Joey Barton, which I would quite like to see happen actually. Although, whenever we have played against him, I always get the impression he hates us.

Still, he wants Champions League football, and we need a player like Barton badly. Some steel in midfield. He is a good player and has cleaned up his antics off the pitch.

Who wouldn't want Englands best midfielder in their team?!

He's backup for Lucas/Gerrard/Maxi/Kuyt/Anyone else. He's been great for us, but hasn't cemented or claimed a position as his own. If its true that his wages are set to increase, our management team may feel it's a little too much for a squad player.

I'd of course prefer to keep him. Went on a great scoring run under Dalglish, and I think he'd be more the happy to play the same role this season (filling in whenever/wherever needed).

He played 41 games for us last year and was one of our most consistent performers. He wasn't backup to anyone nor should he be. He got tired at the end of the season probably due to him being played out of position a number of times and the fact that it was his first season in one of the most physical leagues in the world.

He only filled in when we lacked options out wide and undoubtedly had his best games and his scoring run when played through the middle. Apparently he was on £30,000 last year so you cant really blame him for wanting a pay rise seeing as some of the shite on our squad are on three times that.

Greek soccer bosses named in corruption scandal
* Two Greek Super League club presidents arrested
* Fifteen people identified by Athens prosecutor
* Charges filed against another 70 yet to be named (Adds quotes from Culture Minister and AEK Athens president)

ATHENS, June 23 (Reuters) - Two Super League club presidents were among 15 people identified by the Athens prosecutor on Thursday for alleged involvement in a match-fixing scandal the government described as the "darkest page in the history of Greek football".

Achilleas Beos of Olympiakos Volos and Kavala's Stavros Psomiadis were arrested along with seven others on Wednesday on charges of betting fraud before the authorities announced a list of 15 people in total, 10 of whom have now been taken into custody, in a scandal that has left Greek football reeling.

In a further twist, Psomiadis's father Makis -- a former president of Kavala and AEK Athens -- is among the people the police are searching for.

The prosecutor has also filed charges against another 70 people who have not yet been named with the full extent of the scandal, which has been dubbed "Koriopolis" by the local media, yet to be made known.

The Greek government responded to the arrests by pledging to get to the bottom of match-fixing allegations as part of a wider effort to tackle corruption in the debt-ridden country.

"This investigation is an opportunity to recover from what is the darkest page in the history of Greek football," said Culture Minister Giorgos Nikitiadis.

"It will go as deep and as high as necessary. Our basic target now is to clean up the sport and give the people back the game."

The Super League declined to comment with the investigation continuing but AEK Athens president Stavros Adamidis said the domestic game had reached "rock bottom".

In an open letter to the Super League, the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO), the Sports Ministry and the Culture Ministry, Adamidis appealed to the top flight's organising body to exclude the clubs whose presidents were involved in the match-fixing scandal should the allegations be proven.

"We do not have the slightest inclination to let those involved pull us into their mire," said Adamidis. "This is an opportunity to renew the Super League."

The probe was prompted by European football's governing body UEFA which submitted a list of 41 matches to the EPO.

The list concerned matches from the top flight and the second division over the last three seasons, as well as several Greek Cup games.

Deputy Citizens' Protection Minister Manolis Othonas linked the investigation to the broader needs of the country, which is struggling with a mounting debt crisis, to tackle corruption.

"This affair is of paramount importance," he said. "There will be no tolerance, no exceptions and no compromise. This is what the whole of Greek society is demanding, not just people linked to football.

"We are living in a new era in our country, where pockets of lawlessness and corruption that until recently were considered no-go areas or had high-level connections and protection no longer enjoy an informal immunity.

The government also confirmed that it plans to reduce its 34 percent stake in OPAP, Europe's largest betting company, later this year as part of Greece's 2011-2015 privatisation. (Editing by Justin Palmer and Ken Ferris; To query or comment on this story email sportsfeedback@thomsonreuters.com)

Interesting interview, he seems to be a real "team player" very different to Jose with regards to his personality.
I hope he can bring success to us and hopefully he can get on with managing the team, bringing in his own players and getting rid of deadwood as he sees fit. Its time for Roman to leave his manager to do his job, get involved when asked not when it suits him. I was delighted when Roman came along and getting Mourinho was certainly great for the club but since then his decision making (except for appointing Ancelotti) has been questionable.

If he wants trophies, give AVB time and he'll do it.

Awesome. Thanks! Season can't begin soon enough. Is it too earlier to petition AVB as manager for life? Or at least until Torres leaves. ;)

Great interview. I chuckled a bit when he got all tongue-tied, stuttery when he was talking about a new way of communicating with players, management, and the owner.

Daily Mail reports Chelsea closing in on Falcao for £26.5m

Are they to be considered a good source? Im excited about the signing. Let Anelka go.

Torres/Falcao/Drogba/Sturridge is an extremely talented strike force unless Sturridge goes out on loan and we get Lukaku? I'd like to sign Lukaku but perhaps loan him back to Anderlecht for a season or two. Sturridge deserves his chance after his Bolton performances and I want Didier to stay so maybe we'll just keep a lot of attacking options.

Daily Mail? no. But Falcao to Chelsea sounds very posible.

So it's become pretty obvious that Sanchez (or his management and Udinese, more specifically) have realised they can probably eek out of City at least 40 million for Sanchez.

Udinese owner Pozzo:
'The truth is that Manchester City are making an offer which is more generous than that from Barcelona,' he said. 'This is not going into a fight, but if Cesc is worth €40 million and Neymar and Sergio Aguero €45 million, I say Alexis Sanchez is worth €50 million.'

Obviously he wants to go to Barca, but there's no way Barca will part with 40 million to sign him, leaving City in the box seat, seemingly. For 40 million, they can get fucked. I'd rather not have him.

'If Barca want him, they have to pay his fair price, which is €50million. He is the piece missing in Guardiola's puzzle, a player who makes the difference.

'You do not have to see it as an expensive transfer, since I am sure Madrid will not win anything next year if Barca sign him. I am sure this alone is enough to justify his price.
'That is the math they should do, besides thinking they will be signing a rising star just 22 years old who will bring much joy for at least a decade.

'He's the best player of his generation. He's like Cristiano Ronaldo when he was 22. We know when we have a diamond - Alexis Sanchez is one.'

Bolded for the :lol

I would love to see no one willing to pay 40m and their reaction to this.

Although I don't think it will ever happen...... :(

You guys are swimming in bullshit. United and to a lesser extent Liverpool are mired in debt. They got in that situation by spending and investing beyond their means. You can criticise City for spending billions, but we are not in debt by any stretch and will fall within the Fair Play guidelines comfortably because the club is run well by people who know what they're doing.

I......i am at a loss for words. How blinded can someone possibly be?

Raul Meireles was a huge part of our resurgence in the second half of the season. And was one of the few who impressed during Hodgson's reign. I would be seriously pissed off if he was let go.

I won't go into detail so as to keep the transfer talk going (although if you really want me to I will explain), but if you really think that is the reason that us and United were (or are, in United's case) in massive debt, I advise you to read up on the subject before making comments such as that. It's way, way off the mark.

Well, can you hurry up and put a bid in then? Guy is just going to leave next year on a free, otherwise. And can Liverpool hurry up as well with their bid for Enrique? Same thing will happen to him next year as well.

Typical of Newcastle that we have our good players' contracts running out crucial times. Wouldn't be surprised to see Enrique and Barton both leave on a free next year. At least Tiote's tied down.

Don't Newcastle want £12m+ for Enrique? No thank you.

Completely agree. There is plenty of deadweight at the club that need to go. Maxi and Raul are not in this category by any means, and yet both have been rumored to be exiting.

I hope, given how watertight LFC is at the moment regarding any transfer news, that this is all just bullshit being made up by outlets scrambling for any info possible.

I also fail to see how a combination of Dalglish and Comolli could make such grave errors in reading the will of the fans and who they want to see put on the red jersey next season. Sure, the fans might not always know what's best for the club, but I fail to see how it can ever be justified to sign the likes of Henderson and Adam and letting Raul and Maxi go.

I'm not sure what we want for him, although after Carroll's inflated fee, Ashley probably has this idea that our players are worth more than they are. Though he did let Nolan go for a few million, and he was our top scorer!

I think the original story was in the Metro, which is well known for bullshit sports stories.

Don't get why we want Adam either, I've said before that we have plenty of cover in that area in Raul and Alberto. Poulson, Jovanovic, Ngog etc should be at the front of the stall in our summer sale.

Newcastle are still asking silly money for Enrique, Ashley obviously thinks he can get more cash out of us when really he got the Carroll cash from Chelsea, that's why I'm happy we're looking at Clichy.

This young kid Nolan Roux seems an exciting undiscovered player and would be cheap if we can get Ngog out the door. Surely we have to stick in bids for Mata and Downing at some point. Mind you, everyone's still on holiday, so it's no wonder things have been pretty slow in terms of concrete transfers.

Boateng closes in on Manchester City exit as Bayern make £7m bid
Bayern Munich are closing in on Manchester City defender Jerome Boateng and hope to have the signing sorted by Wednesday next week.

jerome_boateng7.jpg

Munich have been monitoring his situation all season and have submitted a bid to City, believed to be around £7m. Boateng, 22, has told City he wants to leave and the club have accepted they will have to take a hit on the fee they paid for him last year. And Munich are now confident terms can be agreed, with a medical due to take place early next week.

Okay, well elseanio nailed it, both the teams' problems have come from leveraged buyouts. The main differences between the two is that United have done a much better job of maximising their revenue and exploiting growth areas, and the Glazers have been able to handle the LBO better because of this.

The basic idea Hicks & Gillett had was to buy us for around £300 million, while taking out loans to cover that money, and not investing a penny of their own cash in the acquisition. The debt was then loaded onto LFC & AG, the parent company of the club, meaning that the club itself was responsible for paying down the loan and crucially, meeting the interest repayments. At £40 million a year, this was a huge proportion of our profits gone just on paying debt.

So the sole reason that we were in debt was the fact that H&G loaded their acquisition debt onto the club - otherwise, we would have been making a healthy profit had we not had to keep up with interest repayments. We've started making a profit now under FSG because a) they have invested their own money in the acquisition and b) commercial revenues have increased markedly under the guidance of Ian Ayre (our former commercial director, now our MD).

The reason United are still in debt is, as I've said, far greater revenues have allowed the debt repayments to be met quite comfortably, and their repeated success has contributed to this as well. I'll admit I don't take much interest in United's accounts, but in my opinion, I'd be very surprised if David Gill's claim that the entire £80 million they received for Ronaldo is sitting in a bank account somewhere waiting to be spent. Some, if not all, of that will have gone on debt repayments of some form is my guess, as United's debts are larger than ours were. Only their success and revenue generating ability has enabled them to keep the debts relatively out of the spotlight so far.

Should United have a couple of below-par seasons, or even fail to qualify for Europe, much more focus from both fans and the media will be placed on the debt. It was the same for us - when we came 2nd, there was only a very small minority of fans voicing concerns. Finishing 7th, however, lead to a lot more discontent, more people reading about the problems and joining together to try and force a change.

What reputation does the source have? Seems pretty unlikely or like a big fuck up on City's side if true. Rumors were City wants €20m and Bayern is only willing to pay like €12m. I guess if there was a £7m bid, it was just Bayern making the first step in the negotiations. I know City don't really care about money but that would be hilarious bad negotiations on their side.

I see, should be interesting to see if they can break into the top two in the next decade.

I think I said it a while back, but this seems to be the new fashion. Rather than making HUEG buyouts and investments into big clubs, many of these savvy businessmen are seeing potential in acquiring smaller clubs and building them up. Toulalan cost them almost half what it took to buy the whole club I think. Getafé were also bought by a Sheikh as well I believe.
