Definitely, Its the only thing sort of broken right now in this game as far as I am concerned. Hope they'll fix it sooner or later.

And the tourney table for the new round. Get started with those quarter finals ;)

I've had a couple of MG only matches, they're so campy. Not a big fan. Seeing as the MG is such a passive unit, it makes scouting and flanking harder to orchestrate.

Also did anyone see the edge review: Clinical yet chaotic, Mode7's game of tactics is a multiplayer masterpiece.? 9/10

There's some minor mistakes, like claiming that 'movement speed' is a factor which probably stems from the real problem which is that the game doesn't really explain the maths behind everything. I have no idea why they removed the feature that was in the game all the way up to release which showed you the + and - of a unit's position in a firefight.

I may not be quite sure what you mean, but "movement speed" is a factor.

standing still, gives you the most cover bonus
walking slowly while aiming still gives you cover bonus
walking fast while not aiming does not give any cover bonus

Its not that "walking slowly" is the actual reason for having the cover bonus, but its basically synonymous with aiming while walking.

But yeah, no one knows why they omitted that feature.

I see what you mean, I never thought of aiming in terms of 'movement speed' but I guess it is.

archnemesis and I played out our matches tonight. It stretched into a fourth game for the decider. Watch the third game for a particularly nice series of moves involving a rocket and a grenade by archnemesis to completely wipe me out in two rounds.

At least it was a better match than my horrible first one.

I understand. Movies without a happy end are not enjoyable for everyone. *nod*

Finally beat my friend (who was previously 2-0 against me) in a game of Dark Disputed last night. Really tense game, and kind of weird since we had asymmetrical teams which I hadn't seen before -- we each had three assault rifles, I had a shotty and he had a sniper. I don't know if it was just the map, but the sniper seemed kinda weak. It takes so long to fire that I could pretty easily run around between cover pretty much unharmed (although it did lock down a wide swath of the map enough that I couldn't really stop to engage anyone in the area).

I think I'm ready to take on some randoms... hopefully my ego doesn't get crushed repeatedly. :p

Is there really a need to segregate players into different servers for this game? There are no lag issues, and the number of players are very low compared to other games.

The problem is that I know people on different servers but you can't add them to your friend list unless you're on that server. Friend lists per servers are also a pain. To play against multiple friends you need to keep switching servers, and the only way to do that (as far as I can see) is to quit out of the game and start it up again :/ Of course ideally me and my friends go onto the same servers, but everybody has their own group of friends on different servers. It's a pain.

It's just a limitation of the current iteration of the game. Mode7 plans to implement cross-server matches. I think their ultimate vision is one big server like environment for all players.

Well, there are lag issues. The servers were so overloaded that one server couldn't handle all the players and server-side AI processing that went with them.

Sure some more experience programmers might be able to more efficiently handle this stuff on one server for the player count, but them being a small team, it was far easier to split things off into shards as a temporary solution than it was to re-architect the entire server infrastructure.

They're slowing tying things back together after taking the necessary step of splitting things up just to enable people to play the game at all.

Any one else feel that the shotgun has a little bit too much range?

Too much? I think the range is good to undermine the fact that you shouldnt mess with shotgun dude indoors. But outside they dont really stand a chance against an mg if you know how to position yourself properly, especially in the later rounds if you got a rocket launcher. Its a unit that starts of strong but gets weaker as the level is getting destroyed, so I dont know how making him even weaker would be a good thing. I think those 4 main units (except the sniper) have a great balance right now.

Using the app 'splashtop' which streams your desktop (audio and video) to your ipad (FS has to be set to be played in a window, but you can maximize the window).

Splashtop is great, streams real time pretty efficiently. It's good enough to play, but certainly not ideal. Knowing the keyboard shortcuts helps ALOT. It's virtually impossible to use the 'v' function that enables you to see site-lines; I was able to do everything else.

Being precise is challenging, but you can get it with a little bit of practice. Splashtop can overlay arrow keys, so you can scroll around the map pretty easily, and not have to fuss with zooming too much. I played a few games on it, but it's not close to ideal. Splashtop 'clicks' where you touch, so you get the sensation of touching buttons and units to select them. The app costs $3 or $4. You need to be on the same wireless network as the computer running FS, so it might be pointless proof of concept, but it totally works.

Shotguns can be devastating in the right conditions, but I've found that a stationary machine gun behind cover can take them out surprisingly often. The shotgun's range is longer than I expected, but in my experience it's really hard to get long-range kills except against unaware targets.

Ah, damn it. I though it would be interesting to show a friend the game who hasnt got a PC to play it, but got an iPad. But if its only possible in the same network.. well..
but thanks for the info though :)

Can't you just create a new match by typing in his name manually?
It gives me a "that user doesn't exist" error. D:

edit: It worked when I switched to the steam version, so the game will be in progress now.

By the way, Nabs and cramen are free to do their semi-final now, if they want to.

And if anyone is up for a match, I'd be available now :)

In case anyone is interested, I tried to do a match with a friend on an 8vs8 map, slightly larger than normal. 8 is the number which still was okay for that, more wouldnt be too hot I guess, as long as we cant make the maps bigger.

8vs8 match

I've been poking around their blog and forum a bit lately, and I found a couple of interesting explanations that answered some questions I had:

-"Duplicate" matches: Maps are randomly generated, but the server stores the seed for each map that has been made, and before generating a new map it tries to give you an existing seed that neither player has played before. So you will always get a map that is brand new to you, but with the benefit of getting to see (after the match, of course) how previous players handled it. There was some mention of "duplicate scoring" which sounded like it weights your score based on how well your spawn position fared on previous matches, but maybe that's been taken out? I've never noticed it in the final game.

-Campaign scoring is purely based on time, except in the "Defend" missions where you have a set number of turns to defend a target. In those, your score is based on how close the enemy got to the target.

GG Dr Kirby! I just won both the first and second game, third is still going. Ill try and upload them today if it lets me if not Ill just fraps them.

You know you didnt have to make a third one if you already won the first two, right? ;p

They should really find a way to alert you of a new turn when you minimize the window. Email is just a workaround.

THIS... give me a sound cue or something! What I do currently is leave the window maxed and just overlay my browser over it. When I see the screen FS window darken, I know there's a new move.

In beta there was a third party taskbar app that did a little popup on a new turn. I don't have it anymore and I don't know if it still works. I know thats a work around too but its a start. A chime would be very nice.

I would like to have a toggle for fog of war/los in post match replay. That's less useful than a chime but I still think it'd be nice.

Nabs and I are almost done match 2. I got a lucky gren early to pick up the first game, but I'm completely hosed in this second one. It's not over, but I completely misjudged the opening.

Yeah, either I have the window open, so I can see when it darkened, or I just close the game and wait for my thunderbird pop-up to tell me a turn has been made. More options would definitely not hurt, though.

It might just be because I've played something like 80 matches of elimination, but all the other game modes are even better. I've only just started playing them, but because they're not meant to be symmetrical at all, coupled with the bidding process, they're just a lot more interesting than straight up elimination (which is still pretty good anyway).

True. It just bothers me that I cannot play them with a friend outside of the ranking system because its pretty expensive, points wise, to lose a game in the other modes.

I'd love to play a few more secure matches.

i'm so proud :p

(sorry for the bad quality, played this round on my netbook in the middle of the night, laying in my bed and upped it from there)

edit: the game should display if it's a dark or light match in the videos at the beginning...then again does anybody play light matches? :p

Thanks for the games. All 3 were fun. You completely had my number in the 2nd and there were some very tense moments for me in the 3rd. Particularly when I lost half my team to careless positioning and need to find cover, any cover for my last mg to sit behind.

edit: I'm reuploading match 1 and 3 right now. I seem to fail out of a youtube upload about 50% of the time.

Great to hear that we managed to make another game. Now we finished a semi final, while we are still waiting for 2 quarter finals. You still out there, folks?

Infected Zero - DrKirby

n0b - Kzaph

Remember, if you are there to play, but your opponent doesnt make a move within 3 days, you have the right to win instantaneously.
If someone is waiting for your opponent for a while already, let us know in the thread. We'll give him one more day and then call the game over.

this thread died. how is the game holding everyones interest? camping getting you down, or not so much?

im back up and running here so im going to start really digging in finally.

Daigoro/Daigoro if anyone wants to play, or if you want to add me to the OP Pylon. thanks.

I don't find camping to be too big a problem , particularly in the other modes, but 3 of the weapon types are basically designed to hurt campers. I dunno, maybe I'm not playing the right people to see it as a trend, but it doesn't pay off generally.

It's also less fun and a match only lasts a few minutes anyway. The game is still holding my interest I just hope that now that traffic is down they think about folding all the shards back together again.

I'm still following this thread, but I stopped playing after I got defeated in the tournament. If they fix the bug where my game freezes in windowed mode and add some sort of improved notification system I'll jump back in again.

Toma

I am still playing regularly as well. At least 2-3 matches a day and I dont think this is going to change in the near future. I guess we need to wait for the next steam sale to gather a few more people up for this thread/game.
Camping doesnt hurt too much, I only had one game in the last few days where we both camped(3mgs vs 3mgs), but its over soon enough due to the 8 round limit, so it doesnt bother me too much.

And I am not holding my breath for a patch coming soon. They said something about a patch coming in the next few months, so who knows how far this is actually away.
