GAF picks the best (metroid) Castlevania.

Aria of Sorrow, just all clicked so well, great music too.

First post and all that.

Although I really want to say Ecclesia, I even have one of its tunes in my head right now.

EDIT: Harmony of Dissonance, really? After the hard and brilliant CotM, it was a step backwards, only metroidvania I couldn't finish.

SOTN.

Absolutely no nostalgia attached either. My first experience with it was 3 years ago on PSN. Was hooked instantly. One of the greatest soundtracks of all time, too.

Man I am actually pissed at this thread... I loved almost every single one for very diferent reasons:

Circle of the Moon - my first MV game, challenging as hell and very cool strategy system.

Symphony of the NIght - best graphics and music

Aria Of Sorrow - perfected everything

Dawn of Sorrow - Julius fucking mode

Order of Ecclesia - less metrovania than the rest, more platform, magnificent.

Portait was ok, and Harmony was just bad.

SotN is good but definitely not the best, I remember it being my favorite game for a while. The formula was refined and it got us better games eventually.

I think the best ones are Aria of Sorrow and Order of Ecclesia.

I pick Circle of the Moon, it had the most well-balanced challenge, great enemy variety, great castle layout, great powerups, the DSS system was excellent. Terrific music too. It took me a while to warm up to it due to the slow walking speed and dark graphics, but everything about it came together perfectly.

Tough to say.

My list would be something like:

1. Circle of the Moon
2. SOTN
3. Aria of Sorrow

CoTM has some pretty good replayability with its different modes (Magician, Fighter, Shooter, and Thief), and the DSS system is pretty awesome,
despite the Cards being kinda a pain to get. But it's also a pretty challenging game.

SOTN: What do I even have to explain here?

Aria's pretty good since it introduced the Soul system and had some pretty good tunes.
You also had a wide variety of weapons and tools that opened up gameplay a bit.
But frankly, the experience in that game is pretty good from start to finish.

Dawn of Sorrow for me. Symphony of the Night was my first Metrovania, but I still consider DoS to be the best. Everything SOTN did, Dawn did better. Better balancing, better controls, better weapon system, better magic system...yeah. Also I really liked the Soul system in DoS.

Gotta replay it again soon, I guess.

Whichever one I'm currently playing.

Overall, I think I love SotN and Ecclesia the most, as SotN is still the most beautiful and creative, while Ecclesia is challenging, intense, and has plenty of original ideas too.

Symphony is wildly unbalanced, especially once you get to the second castle, but I kind of love how insane the game becomes. If you avoid the overpowered weapons all the way through (not only the insanely powerful rare drops, but also the handful in hidden rooms that are vastly more powerful than the majority of weapons available at the time) and the magic spells (nearly all of which can be game breaking), then it's not so bad, at least for the first half, but the amazing number of options you have for every fight gives you so much freedom and control over combat that it really is amazing.

Ecclesia is, above all else, a really different experience than the other games, but just as (if not more) polished. The speed of gameplay is phenomenal, and even though Shanoa has less abilities to choose from than a maxed out Soma or Alucard, they often feel like more meaningful choices due to the resistances enemies have and the danger of their attacks. The platforming mechanics are pretty fun too, with the stretch ring spell.

Aria and Dawn are extremely polished versions of Symphony, far more balanced, but more subdued too. They still have some crazy fun, but are a bit less off the wall. Portrait plays a little with the rules and has the most references to other games, but the reuse of level themes does hurt a bit. It's still fantastic.

Circle of the Moon's challenge is addicting, and the class choices on winning radically change the game. Thief mode is by far the best, as it makes the game harder but the increased luck virtually guarantees all the cards (except the two really rare ones), and the lower stats and higher drops make you use more items and make it feel far more RPG like. It may have been a GBC upport, but it blows away all the prior GB games.

Harmony of Dissonance is just a weak, halfhearted attempt. I do love Juste's speed and power, but it's too bad the enemies are too weak to fight back. It also has the most boring enemy and castle designs. The only enemy I really liked was the armor you had to push into the gears.

SOTN - best complete package. sadly, it's too easy most of the time.

OOE - starts out nicely in difficulty and only falls apart near the end. chilling in town and talking to people is fun. it brings the game to life.

Favorite Metroidvania is SOTN, of course. Richter's in it man.

Although I stick with Harmony of Despair because of the amazing co-op play.

Slow walking speed? But one of the first artifacts you get is the dash boots, which let you run by tapping forward twice, allowing you to move faster than most of the other MetroidVania titles (at least, without magic-draining abilities, like Alucard's Wolf transformation or Soma's Black Panther soul)

Circle of the Moon is a great title though; too often overlooked.

I love hearing this as soon as Dracula appears.

Symphony of the Night.

Although the only other one on that list that I've played is Harmony of Despair so my vote probably doesn't count for much. I do love SotN though, and I have no nostalgia goggles because I didn't play it until its 2007 PSN release.

It's hilarious that those picking SOTN basically give no thought to the argument. I'm trying to decide which CV to try first, and based on the responses Aria sounds the most compelling. Unless someone can inform me of the advantages SOTN has over it?

Symphony of the Night without a doubt thanks to the terrible voice acting and amazing soundtrack. All others released afterwards made very nice alterations/improvements to the systems from SOTN but if I had to live with one for the rest of my life, I would without a doubt take Symphony of the Night. When you acquire new gear it was actually shown on your character. The cape changed color etc.

Really now?

Aria of Sorrow, nothing comes close.

Aria of Sorrow.

And these appeared just above your post, how did you miss them?

Both camps have given good reasons and others just wrote the game's name. You sound like you have already decided on Aria, so go play that.

If someone told you they never played a 3D Zelda game, which Zelda would you tell them to play first? Id say the first 3D Zelda OoT, with Castlevania gone Metroid, id say Symphony of the Night, its the first. It is a far bigger game in every sense of the word and worth comparing to Super Metroid. Aria is a smaller, shorter game, with less enemies, bosses, worse animations since afterall it was on the GBA.

It's bigger and more ambitious. There are more enemies, more items, more secrets, more effects, a really great sense of scale.

It's generally more of everything, just not as refined. And no Souls magic System (the biggest part of the Sorrow games)

Aria is not a bad place to start though. Atmosphere is incredibly good, and the balance is strong as well. Still, it's not one of the more challenging titles.

To adress the lack of explanation: SotN was simply too difficult for my liking. Aria didn't have that barrier of entry for me and I got to enjoy the awesome game.

No contest.
