We have a historic playbook for this. Germany was in the same place during the 1920s. Some people were convinced they could control und stop these people (Communists, Fascists) by remaining nice and reminding everyone of state laws. Didn't work out for us.

The ruling SPD party in Germany was a party that would be left wing but they worked democratically with centrist parties while communists and fascists tried more to use undemocratic violence. But the main problem with the SPD was that they were seen as not doing enough to protect the living conditions of the workers who were their base of democratic support. They left the door open.

At some point we need to call a spade a spade. We have one party, through its leadership and members, openly declare anyone who doesn't agree with them a nazi and a threat to democracy. Among other nasty things. They've openly called for violence in media, political speeches, and actively participated and supported in this violence. This rhetoric has resulted in many violent acts. Charlie getting assassinated was by no means the first violent act for a non-democrat speaker on a college campus. Or elsewhere. After this political assassination this one party has showed their true colors. Celebration. Encouragement for more violence. Victim blaming. This very thread started due to the prevalence of game developers in supporting and cheering on this assassination.

The way I read it is, that George Floyd being back was almost inconsequential in regards to WHY BLM rioted. They used it as catalyst to riot with the perceived moral outrage that injustice systematically was in place.

Agreed. I've always been mostly what used to be considered a centrist or left-leaning until the days of Hilary. The moment she called a large percentage of people "a basket of deplorables" I switched parties. Dems don't represent me as a white straight male.
