Gamers Nexus - The Problem with Linus Tech Tips: Accuracy, Ethics, & Responsibility

Havnt watched any LTT video since last year but didn't realise Anthony came out as trans https://linustechtips.com/topic/1509706-goodbye-anthony-welcome-emily/
And that apparently they havnt been in a video since( note: only going by other forum info as I have 0 info on that and not REEEEing ) but that is strange, Anthony was the only one there who knew anything about Linux/OSs.
Was kind of wondering where he went, always enjoyed his input on videos and hope they get back to providing input on videos

Are you sure you aren't confusing GN's 4070 and 4070ti reviews? I just watched the benchmark portions of the 4070ti video and it does not match what you're describing. Steve is critical of the 4070ti, but most of their benchmarks show it performing similarly to the 3090ti.

Go to the 24.00 min mark , the most replayed part of the video btw. "Nvidia would have to admit there is ZERO , generational improvement or a very very small amount between a 4080 12gig(the 4070TI) and a 3080"

So it got even worse. Not only did LMG have the fucking correct card but they actually LOST it. After that, Linus as the shithead he is, had the nerve to say he wouldn't spend a few hundred bucks to do a correct review when he was sent the card in the first place.

This isn't just stupidity, this is malicious. I always attribute to stupidity what can also be explained by malice but Linus gets no benefit of the doubt after all of this.

Something like a ~15% performance improvement from gen to gen would be considered small.

Thats social media influencer dudes for ya like Linus.

Whereas a big faceless corproation aims for profit and has CSR handle your issues, and office staff to handle business to business issues at least the end result is there will likely be an effort for resolution.

With social media people (even though it turns out GN said Linus' company is actually 120 people with a CEO at the helm), these kinds of organizations are basically an extension of any random guy doing their own thing. In other words, you get the best of the best (untethered social media people being honest with zero concern for money or acting like a big shot as they do videos after dinner for fun), but then you get the worst of the worst as they are total shills, liars, backstabbers, and will complain about you publicly on their channel or website. Good luck trying to get one of these people to graciously rectify a situation quietly like a CSR rep handling a broken product, or two companies trying to come to solution behind closed doors.

Lameus is as amatuer as his crowd, it is known.

With that said, I would take Steve more seriously if he got an adult haircut. That hair is an insult to logical thinking adult, esp those who work in tech. I bet his haur is everywhere there. Yuck.

I knew this Linus was a prick as soon as I saw these thumbnails and statements in his youtube videos, particularly the one it says "4k gaming is dumb"

He is just an idiot with luck

I think you can tell a lot about him by the fact that the multimillionaire Linus knows, down to the hour, what his staff are paid. Given that they’re presumably salaried, it means he’s sat there and worked it out for no other reason than to know how much their time is costing him, no doubt so he can berate them when they don’t meet their evidently punishing schedules for publishing more videos.

I’ve worked with people like that and they’re horrible assholes who treat everyone like they’re doing them a favour by keeping them employed.

yo wtf
if this is all true, this company is way more dysfunctional than it seems. This is outright toxic culture.

She needs to lawyer up because I feel like LMG might fire back and accuse her of defamation.

Ahhh and there's the sexual harassment thing. I was wondering how long it would take for someone to make that accusation.
never forget what happened...

linus has no empathy

And suicide. You people need to seriously calm down lmao.

I like both channels and have no horse in this thread really, but this thread seems to have proven to me that some people on this forum really have zero idea about these people at all.
Like him or hate him, saying Linus is an "idiot with luck" shows you really don't understand just how many things you would have to do right to get where he is. No amount of luck makes that happen.

Honestly, it has alreay gone past the point where any reasonable discussion seems to be possible. Everyone just wants to believe what they already believe. If you like LTT, everything is a lie, if you late Linus, everything is of course true and the worst thing in the universe.

People are way to invested into stuff that doesn't influence their daily lives in the slightest. Especially on reddit. Holy poop those comments are insane. Burning Linus at the stake wouldn't be good enough for some.

Stop spreading hate , Linus actually let the kid to have it and there's even a pretty wholesome video clip of him doing that during the auction . I'm not trying to defend Linus but I think we should be careful of posting these allegations

Yep, people are on some which hunt as if they're holy and perfect.

I think GN seems more petty after the last video response.

They need to worry about their own content and not policing LTT. Stick to what they do best.

Leave the rest to the other channels.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who got some of the same vibes as you from the video.
The Maddie part aside, the GN allegations really don't seem to be that... bad? So there are factual errors, yes, they need to be adressed, but all in all, they didn't seem that world ending. And I've never seen LTT declare themselves as the epidome of factual correctness, granted, they are trying to be that with Labs, so they will need to do better in the future.
The whole GPU block situation is bad and unfortunate, but everyone who has worked for a medium to large sized company will tell you stories like this, it's shitty, but it happens all the time, communication error's don't seem that far fetched, especially internal ones.
And Linus' response was... well, Linus. Knee Jerky, he should've waited and adressed this with a cool head. Or maybe wait, since follow up allegations, like Maddies, were quasi quaranteed to happen. At their size they need a coms person that handles this kind of backlash.

I don't know, I really don't, but it seems to me that people are way to addicted to drama nowadays, couple their character to Youtube Channels and make it their main mission to "support a side" or "don't support a side" no matter what the truth is.

Thank you. We're on the same page.

And if you notice, Steve specifically Cherry picked out things that aren't necessarily false but omitting the fact that Linus is almost too transparent to a fault sometimes. And a lot of these concerns have actually been addressed consistently on the WAN show. So it's very easy to dogpile and to accumulate things that you want to curate yourself but let's be clear, Linus is entering a space that is more of a specialty for gamers Nexus and one of the team members from LTT said something that mentioned gamers Nexus and gamers Nexus took offense. A simple private conversation would have sufficed.

While some of the issues with mistakes aren't false, it doesn't need to become deeper and deeper about other things that it's not or some kind of witch Hunt like the internet loves to do.

This is why I take more notice of the cold and condescending tone which Steve takes as he normally does but in this context he just looks even more petty after listening to some of the rants.

People have no idea of what it's like to run that show and amount of people and LTT, Steve included.

That's not why I watch GN and I won't watch anymore if he goes on these policing rants instead of doing his job as a reliable tech reviewer.

Half of the comment who criticized LTT on the web were like "hate Linus because... you know, look at his attitude like he owns the place", and the very time something controversial surfaces, people are 'I told you I was right to hate Linus because... you know, look at his attitude like he owns the place".

Well said, I don't think I can add much more to this.

The insight I gain from this is that drama among "celebrities" still moves the masses. The importance of the core issue here is not really in proportion to the attention this uproar generates, millions of subscribers or not, Maddie aside.

The problem here is not how much LMG is a evil corp, which it can be true after all, but how absurd are the accusations that should prove this.

-LMG is a corp/company that only pursuit profit... said by a guy who knows LMG for years and also made videos with them, but suddenly pretends he knows nothing;
-"LMG act as a corp"... from the guy who run his channel from his basement vs company with 60(maybe more) employees, so it's safe, common, and even logic they take shortcuts, because when you start a company, it's not about "if" but "how many" compromises you make to make profits to pay your employees.
-"LMG tests are inaccurate" from guys who still use stuff like geek bench and other shit as a test, when literature and even past controversies exposed these softwares;
-"People at LGM are complaining about time on tests" I would pretty be very angry if I was one of those on the video with my words decontestualized. In a video "exposed" by the same LMG and not from a journalistic investigation. In a video were Linus explicitly said the reason why they do what they do.
And let's pretend we don't know there videos from LGM that explain why they made clickbait titles.

Not counting the company who made the heatsink which have all the rights to have their prototype back, so they decided to fight for their right... on Twitter, the Modern Court, instead of filing a suit. I mean they may be a little company, but LMG is not Big Pharma, it's not David vs Goliath.
Since LMG has opened its own test lab, so they have all the interest in do things right, I would wait some other accusation from other past partners to form an opinion.

The most damning part of GN's video for LTT was when you hear Linus like some deluded power crazed business owner - with zero company experience - talking about the company money as his own, like the $100M company is still just an extension of his misplaced ego and piggybank. That's the type of unprofessional behaviour you can sort of understand from someone in the early days of getting a small 2-3 person band business up and running, but not an employer of 120 people. That's so revealing.

Ultimately LTT has no way of fixing their perceived integrity issue IMO, as it is impossible to be valued at that amount as a owner named business doing marketing deals with suppliers you need to impartially review/test, and then be able to divorce those relationships in a suitable public way to regain perceived lost integrity and still pay the bills for that many staff.

I agree with GN comment about positive reviews for good products are now problematic coming from LTT, because the integrity question means that positive review could have a counter reaction as looking false, or overly positive.

People keep saying Linus' content is entertaining, but I wouldn't watch the muppets review, benchmark and advise on PC hardware purchases, and they are far funnier than Linus could ever be, so mashup just seems ill thought out. I know GN stuff is too in depth and too technical for most people watching Linus, but that's a positive IMO. Someone doesn't go to the detail level of GN on stuff and then drop the ball on fixing errors in the right way.

If the technical content from these channels isn't a reference resource in itself then I don't think a channel will survive long term, and that seems to be LTTs problem. The info doesn't justify its existence when it doesn't communicate its redactions/erratum in a transparent way, and it cares more about getting to market with first reviews, than having the definitive review by integrity.

The waterblock situation was so bad, I'd happily see them have to pay damages that would put LMG under. Taking a triple dump on an small business trying to innovate looked like bullying. In the UK, the law around disposing of company assets for tax purposes is clear, that disposing of an asset you clearly don't own, and have no receipts to that affect would be problematic IMO to defend against in court as "just an honest mistake".

GN did state, about 11 months ago, on video, that LMG was to now be held to the same standard as other manufacturers that GN covers. He's been stuggling with positioning this for a bit it seems.

Uh....not quite. LTT employee bragged about how they were different than GN and Hardware Unboxed in their studio tour. Hardware Unboxed addressed it on twitter throwing shade back at LTT. Linus then condescendingly wagged his finger at certain "content creators" on his show in response. That's when GN posted his video. If we are going to say that a "simple private conversation would have sufficed" then that is on Linus because he could/should have opened up dialogue directly with Hardware Unboxed and GN to clear the air. He didn't do that. No....Linus is the one who made a video addressing the whole ordeal first. Not GN.

I'm not really disagreeing with you here but the point is that the gamers Nexus video, while addressing some valid points, is leaning on the petty side. I'm not going to take my favorite internet nerds side other than just trying to be objective myself. And if I didn't want so much of both these channels content I wouldn't be speaking on some of the things that maybe somebody like Linus has stated in the past. And none of this is worth the drama and the heartache it probably is causing them at the group because gamers Nexus is a little bit hurt over a comment that was baseless.

So you can either lean on it emotionally or you can put that emotion in the things that really matter the most like your family or something more important than the stupid Internet drama.

Enjoy the content, or not, and let's hope both these channels continue to grow because I find them both pretty viable and especially entertaining on the LTT side.

Another thing I should comment on is Steve's normal dry and cold delivery is just a little more obnoxious given how he leans into this in two of the videos he's already put out. People on the internet can cheer their favorite nerd over the other but it doesn't stop Steve from being obnoxious and annoying in this ordeal himself.

Get along and enjoy these channels.
