Gamers Nexus - The Problem with Linus Tech Tips: Accuracy, Ethics, & Responsibility

Steve is an autist prick that got called out and had to remove his journalist credentials and is now involving his lawyer.

The funny thing is that Linus has to power to silence this insolent brat but he is too kind to do so.
And how would daddy Linus do that? Use his 100 million dollar company to sue GN for libel?

If he did that he would become internet public enemy number 1.

Don't you mean Emily :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Why is it always fat, out of shape dudes that transition? It's never the 6'4" guy who hits the weights. Always those overweight ones with long hair who can't score so they transition thinking it'll be easier to get chicks. Looking at Jim Sterling and that BioWare director lol.

Umm well err. I'll just come out and say it and there was Tyler Reks the pro wrestler. So there was at least one.

People with body dysphoria live in a society that doesn't understand them and is often hostile to them. Emily was closeted for many years, possibly in part due to these reasons, which leads to large amounts of fear, self-doubt, and stress.

It's not surprising that someone with body and self image issues, who is dealing with the stress of not being able to freely live their lives, might also be at risk for secondary issues like depression and excessive weight gain.

Is it?

When is the last time his channel did anything that isn't bog-standard tech review or drama?

That channel used to be way better than this, like WAY better.

Is this supposed to be a joke? Steve or GN is doing exactly not that. Beyond the usual reviews he is doing consumer advocacy, educated the audience about legal issues, goes up to ASUS face to face, does collabs with analysis labs, does deep dives into tech bankruptcies like EK Waterblocks.

you know why.
It's the "ugly/fat" people who can't find a significant other or a group of friends.
So they find a group of other men online and they do whatever they can not to be alone.
It's normal. People don't want to be alone

Probably obesity is a symptom of other underlying issues. Same with their identity crisis.

Could but it also equally could be constant ridicule and rejection making them go bat shit crazy. You don't know and I don't know.

They're called transmaxxers.

I've met a few transitioned individuals who you wouldn't know were biologically different and they're fine. They live their life and actually try to avoid the attention, they're awesome.

Then you have dudes who just put on dresses and scream for the attention.

What do you think this email proves? Everyone seems to acknowledge Steve had been working on the Asus piece for at least a month prior, probably longer because other youtubers at the time were vocal about distancing themselves from Asus.

What does this guy think he was owed? A shout out? Was Steve supposed to just throw out months of investigative work because some small youtuber published his single bad experience first? Was the linking of Asus and Scam as terms now some sort of copy written phrase? The fucking thumbnail claim is hilarious considering both channels use the most generic youtube thumbnail style possible with the typical cutout of an expressive shocked / puzzled face and some keywords / title.

People seem to lose their minds around the topic of Gamers Nexus / Steve.

Edit: Also what did this dipshit expect to collaborate with Steve on? All he had to complain about was the relatively poor condition of the RMA card he received. That might be shitty customer service but it hardly seems like a scam. Steve had done a much deeper dive into Asus inventing repair costs and their agents just making shit up on the fly, you know actual scam processes. The blackbird guy got his RMA as far as I'm aware... He had to appeal to a dictionary definition then just declared his experience was a scam lmfao. This asshole even had the ego to introduce himself by mentioning that his wife had written 7 books and Steve has the ego? Dude had 23 videos at the time and only 1.6k subs, I'm not surprised Steve decided to ignore his email. If anyone sent me a cold introduction email as a professional telling me irrelevant information like their wife had published 7 books I'd probably ignore them too.

Looks like they are talking about the email address that GN hasn't used in years, and everyone knew about, including Linus.
But that then Linus decided to use, just to pretend they informed GN, while knowing that no one was going to read it.

You can try to pretend that it's GN and Steve's fault, but the reality is that Linus has been caught lying so many times.
And Steve has all the receipts for all the lying and misinformation.
FFS, Linus is so incompetent, that he gets his cannel hacked on a regular base.

Accusing GN of narcissism in a thread about Linus is a bit redundant isn't it. We know what his unfiltered opinions were on the controversies he's had laid at his door, he has a habit of giving them immediately and they've not been a good look.

Eh, if you feel undervalued and left: good for you. But do we really need a whole article about it?
His video has been out for 6 days and has 2.2 million views.

Gotta admit, it popped up in my feed a few days ago and I watched it because I was curious. I guess a lot of other people were curious too...

I guess I've just become allergic to Youtuber/streamer drama. It's always overblown for maximum views and endless regurgitation.

The only issue I see in this case, and in others...is the weight gain isn't really going down after making the transition that should let them be who they pictured inside.

Makes me think it's not working to really fix their issues, or it's a deeper underlying problem. Either way, I usually think it's good to try to get your body in shape before doing anything else, because it will be a big boost to self-value, and fixing diet alone does wonders for your mood/temperament.

Did the all of the problems that I outlined go away post-transition or only some of them? Much of the mean spirited comments and abuse still remain while the person in question took the first steps on her journey, and society as a whole is still as judgemental as it ever was. I think the timeline that you expect is not proportional to the reality she faces.

Even "normal" people who are overweight take a long time to lose weight. The first steps of coming out aren't a silver bullet for all that ails you. If anything, coming out has opened her up to even more avenues of online bullying that she wasn't experiencing before.

Maybe he needs help and it isn't the kind you're offering.

Isn't that the case with many people in jobs?

Sure, almost all aren't working on their boss' house, but their work is helping their boss do their job and earning them more money than you.

It does sound like he was somewhat undervalued, but also he doesn't deem to have any formal qualifications.

Yeah and just to add it's not like we haven't seen people at LTT move around and Linus has gone on to Encourage them to do so. Infact, I'd argue when you look at the current output the entire staff at this point are people who've been there since the beginning and have found their place. He sounds like he thought that being the general low-rung IT/Help Desk guy was going to go someplace and that's just not the case.

I used to think those house videos are douchey, and that's when I thought he was doing renovations.

Imagine what I thought when I discovered that they're all brand-new houses..

If you risk your capital as a business owner, you are entitled to and responsible for, legally and morally, the profits and losses.

As an employee, you aren't risking your money.

As a longtime viewer of Linus Tech Tips, a couple points that Linus used to talk about a lot stick in my mind.

1. Linus would often say that one of his goals is to help get everyone in his employ a house.
2. Linus would also often say that his long term goal is to eventually get the channel in a self-sustaining state that can function just as well without his as with him. That way, in the event that Linus is ever unable to continue hosting, the rest of the team could pick it up and run the channel without him.

In regard to point number one, apparently that has been harder than Linus had hoped for, given Jake's comments. Either too hard given the current economy, or Linus has given up on that goal as realistic when the company has grown to over 100 employees.

In regard to point number two, it looks like Linus really dropped the ball here. People like Jake, Andy, and Alex were strong personalities, very good on camera, and also positively vibed with the audience. Given the success of their new channels, Linus's company obviously undervalued them. How is LTT supposed to be a self-sustaining channel without Linus if all of their top personalities quit to form their own channels?

I think power and money went to his head. He couldn't give a fuck about improving lives of his early employees, increasing their salary commiserating with their improved skill sets or basically anything else other then himself.

And you could tell at some point as quality of content dropped and they started producing mostly slop.

I mean again it's kinda douchey to use company resources to improve your personal QoL. And repeatedly at that too.

Im not letting this one slide. It's far too easy to make Linus out to be the bad guy, but not one of you consider that LTT is his livelihood and his responsibility. Linus stands to lose everything if LTT folds. Dozens of people would lose their jobs.

Jake has every right to feel he was underpaid. Linus has every right to not pay him what he feels he is owed. We do not know what Jake was paid. The fact that we have people who think fast food workers should be paid $30 an hour tells you how warped a view of compensation has.

I am little bit annoyed at people who make Linus out to the be the villain here without considering the following:
1. Jake would be a 100% nobody without Linus. He now has a youtube channel that has nearly 1M subscribers. That is worth a LOT. He owes Linus for making that happen. He leveraged his fame at LTT to make that happen. This fact pretty much ends any idea that Linus is somehow a villain. Jake owes his entire existence to Linus and because of that, he now has an opportunity to really truly see what he is worth AND what Linus actually risks every day.
2. We do NOT know what Jake was paid. Linus could have paid him a fair rate. We only have Jakes word here and when it comes to compensation, I don't think it's a stretch to say that most people feel they're underpaid. Often they are.
3. Jake lives in VAN-freaking-COUVER. It is far and away one of the most expensive places to live in all of North America. Now that he has a youtube channel. He should move somewhere cheaper.
4. There is also the issue of precedent. He pays Jake more. Does everyone else get paid more.

1. Living in Vancouver is the biggest obstacle to this. Living in Texas (as long as it's not Austin) would make that goal infinitely more achieveable.

The Hardware Unboxed podcast actually has a VERY fair assessment of the Linus employee drama.

It's one of the few places where both sides are defended. Given that LTT and HUB had some issues in the past, I feel pretty good in recommending this, since HUB doesn't have a ton of incentive to promote LTT.

It's not just one person who left. There was an exodus of employees who were with LTT from very beginning.

Oh, nice, going to give it a watch. I find HUB fairly objective folks overall.

That makes Jakes position even less defensible. Paying all of those employees more would set a dangerous precedent.

Also, plenty of employees have also stayed.

I just want to add Jake being in the same position was odd. We've seen people move around at LTT, Linus clearly doesn't have a problem promoting people should they put in the work but Jake from day 1 just seemed to be this handyman/general labour do everything but specialize in nothing that happens at places - and while I'm not saying that's worth nothing, what it does start to say "what do you do here? You're all over the place" and he never found his "place" like everyone who promoted there did.
