GameSpot: Kojima to leave Konami after MGSV, power struggle, communications embargo

Lets not panic.

It's not like The Phantom Pain just got a release date to relitively close to this drastic change in structure and non-perminant employment.

I mean, what are the odds that Konami cut short development and is pushing this out the door, I mean that would be crazy, no way that could be the power struggle between top execs and lead producer of a game.

I'm trying not to panic but I'm panic

Sony should send out an olive branch and offer to bring them in as a first or second party. Let them be autonomous and just throw money at the man. Then Sony can possibly leverage the silent Hill franchise or future mgs games from Konami.

Crazy, the good I can see of this is that maybe we'll get something new and exciting from Kojima, but who knows when that will happen, IF that will even happen.

I never thought I'd see a company make a bigger fuckup than Capcom with Mikami, Kamiya and the rest of the Clover crew. But there it is.

Kojima is bigger than Konami at this point, their loss.

It will be great to see him work on something other than metal gear though. I love MGS but I have wanted to see him make something else also.

Sony this is your chance. Fox Engine runs wonderfully on Sony hardware, take it in house. Approach Kojima-san and let him do what he does best no micromanagement.

this is like... the ONLY actual franchise to give enough profits for Konami to still exists after abandoning Sillent Hill and Castlevania, how are they thinking they will exist???
Where are you getting that from?
Konami could close its games division and still exist.

In 2014, games accounted for 15% of their revenue, while social games were 48%, health and fitness 35% and health and fitness 2%. Games showed growth YoY thanks to MGS but still, it's not their biggest business.

So when do y'all think we'll read about the new studio, accompanied on its website by a countdown that will lead to a Kickstarter page for a not-Metal Gear or a not-Snatcher, that'll eventually get picked up and published by idk Ubisoft or Microsoft or somebody

Holy fuck. The end of an era for sure.

Sounds like this is part of a major shift with Konami to just bailout on consumer video games. Either that or their big wigs decided they don't like having their game directors speaking for themselves in public so they just canned them all. I think the first is more likely.

First they took our waifus and now they taking our husbandos

Pretty much, or at least Kojipro is.

Basically this will allow him to keep his promise of never making a Metal Gear title again.

Wow, this is fucked up. Konami has officially signed their death warrant. Do you think the company will survive with Kojima?

All they really have is Winning Eleven as a popular brand.
They are diversified in Japan but not in games.
So yes they are fucked, most likely.

Well that's that then.

He would have to start his own independent studio (unless he wants to retire) I don't see anywhere else he could go that isn't a major step down from the position he's held for so long.

He should start his own new studio and invite EVERY alienated Konami dev to join and make games they wanna make in the kind of setting they want to develop in.

It'd be like his own Outer Heaven or something. The old school Silent Hill, Castlevania and Metal Gear guys, even the Love Plus guys, the Hudson Soft guys... everybody!

I was totally expecting this to be the last Metal Gear game regardless, but still. Silent Hills is looking pretty dead right now.

And removing his name from everyhthing is such awful bullshit

So Kojima's Metal Gear canon ends with TPP.

We'll have Konami's hot shit afterwards. It will suck to see the MGS legacy being ruined though.

We already have MGS4 and Peace Walker, I doubt Konami's games will be more damaging to the legacy than those.

I see this as a good thing in the long run. The marketing blitz for MGSV will feel hollow in the absence of Kojima, but at least in the future he'll get some freedom.
