I mean its not exactly a massive jump is it? I still don't see it would cost anywhere near the price being guessed at for an OLED Switch 2 panel, outside of the usual Nintendo pricing of course.

Again, the Deck just didn't get an OLED panel for the extra cost.

I guess its to be expected for an edge lit LCD with HDR, Should fare better with SDR at least.

That said, some of these comparisons to the previous OLED model are pretty stark. These days I carry a slim Vita instead of OG and I've never found the switch to LCD to be that bad with it, still manages to look pretty good with some benefits. Probably just come down to the quality of the LCD display used.

His recommendations on a C1 don't look that great.

I used HGiG to do the calibration and if I don't max out the brightness slider on the second screen then the highlight brightness sucks.

As soon as I maxed it out, Zelda went from dull and barely better than SDR to popping.

I was about to watch this video yesterday but I realized YouTube didn't upload the HDR version, he said in the comments that YouTube takes up to 24 hours for that so I'm waiting and will check today later again

Why would it need a VRR screen? The system can't use VRR docked so all games have to run without VRR that way anyway, and I've yet to see anyone say they prefer the look of a game on the VRR screen handheld over playing it without VRR docked at double the frame rate or high res.

The only problem with HDR is people trying to run it on displays not meant for it and tv manufacturers advertising it on displays it's not meant for. HDR really needs 1 of 2 things to function well IMO. OLED for deep contrast or the very high brightness you get from something like Mini LED in order to bring out the highlights.

It's not HDRs fault that people try to pass off 400 nit edge lit panels as HDR and then people see it and go "this looks like shit".

That being said while I notice the lack of brightness on the SW2 I still think the display looks pretty good but I'm not out here analyzing every little tiny pixel and looking up statistics so I have something to complain about.

Yeah I think the people crying at the man aren't crazy or something, one thing is how the screen feels and the other is how objectively it is by using specialized tools. If the screen looks good to them it's ok to just go with it.

Even by mobile LCD standarts that's cheap af. Hell, even ultra-budget phones like CMF 2 Pro are shipping with quite custom 6.77" 120 Hz AMOLED. And that phone costs like 249 USD/EUR ffs.

Nintendo probably got a killer deal on some surplus tablet LCD panels that nobody else wanted, so they decided to hold off on OLED for now.

yeah but by doing that you risk clipping the highlights and losing details in the process. HDR advanced recommandations generally don't look to get to the maximum brightness or « pop » all over the screen, but the most accurate picture with the largest range of details possibles, both in dark areas and specular highlights

I stopped being an accuracy fag years ago. Some highlight clipping is a price i'm willing to pay to get a picture that actually looks like it's in HDR. A small percentage of the image looking like shit is better than 100% of the image.

In my experience, the 'experts' making advanced recommendations are simply wrong about a lot of things. Like EvilBoris on Reee saying that you should always use HGiG, even though a) next to no games actually use HGiG system level settings and b) it can produce a literally unusably dull image compared to using dynamic tone mapping (Hitman 3 on PS5 for example).

Everyone should obviously start with some baseline of expert recommendations, but we shouldn't be afraid to veer from them if it simply doesn't look good.
 
LCD HDR will never be close to OLED HDR, as in a darker game like RE it is unable to brighten highlights without raising the blacks as well. Which won't be black in the first place.
I did not expect it to be an LCD, I wanted it to be OLED :P.

Most of what we got is either less important on handheld form than TV docked (VRR) or less useful than people think (HDR with raised blacks / poor contrast).

I have noticed in his screenshots comparison that the image that popped (maximum brightness) had a flatter look. Look at Mario's hat and nose.

VRR display on a handheld is a game changer, cause I'm pretty sure Switch2 will run most of its games under 120fps, so with VRR you can eliminate juddder and screen tearing while consuming less battery. Unless you want to fine tune your display refresh ratio game-by-game (like on the SteamDeck OLED)...

What can they do if they care? Nothing. Seriously why do people act like there is any competition in closed ecosystems. You either buy the shit or you don't. There is no other version of Switch with a better screen and portable PCs don't play switch 2 games. I didn't like that they skimped on the specs including the joystics and that the game prices are obnoxious, but I had no choice if I want to let my kids (and myself) play the next Mario. I also was kinda pissed about the pro controller price but grabbed one at Costco for 75 and was still pissed.

Does it look the same if you disable HDR? Or is that with HDR disabled? I've straight up disabled HDR on portable for me as it frankly looks better. The screen is not a good fit for HDR at all.
The LCD screen with HDR off looks better than OLED ?

The guy has the best info about how to calibrate your console. This video about the correct HDR calibration of the Switch 2 is a good example.

Having a small part of the image look wrong in favor of the overall is a good point. I'm still happy with HGIG because of the flaws with dynamic, but I'm pleased with Switch 2s HDR massaging the overall image to better results.
 
I think so because PSP was quite bad at that.
Calling it nostalgic is sarcasm - but comparison to PSP seems real based off of that clip - that's some nasty ghosting on display - way worse than og. Switch as well.

But they really wouldn't need VRR at all. 'If' their implementation was dock/portable - the argument would hold water - but the moment they separated out the modes the way they did - VRR is largely pointless.
They could just as easily* give direct control over refresh to Devs and let 'them' choose what to run at, a closed system with a built-in screen that's all you really need.

*Yes it 'is' that easy (there was a time when PSP SDK allowed for this even) and yes the platform holders are universally idiots for not allowing that 20 years ago (goes for Sony and Nintendo alike) - we didn't need to suffer for 20 years to get a semi botched VRR implementation on a console handheld.

Not to say that a simple 144hz Oled would be cheap enough for Nintendo (clearly not, given what we got).

I do use HGIG for most games where I can. The compromise on Switch 2 of having HGIG with maxed out brightness in the system settings was preferable to just using DTM by default to me. DTM and settings like black stabilizer and FTDA can save some games with badly implemented HDR but I wouldn't use it all the time either.

But the real takeaway is that HDR gaming sucks and has a ton of problems so I don't think there should be any hard and fast rules to fix them. I've used this guy's channel a bunch of times for individual game settings because the problems run far and wide.

We have games with uncapped brightness, or too low peak brightness (RE Village at 400 nits on PS5), gamma mismatch issues, wrong color gamuts, games which use HGIG, most which don't or on Windows flat out ignore the color profile, many games have no settings whatsoever, settings are confusing ('brightness' on LG = contrast as its traditionally interpreted, or laymen thinking wtf does "paper white" do)...

At the end of the day creative intent has been taking a backseat anyway, because nobody seems able to come up with a foolproof solution to getting good, universal HDR quality for everyone. HGIG was meant to be it but then developers just ignore the damn system setting.

That's my rant for the day.

The color gamut is no better than SDR so I'm not surprised it's only 8 bit

It's why switching to HDR looks the same (actually a bit worse) as SDR. If your panel is fundamentally only capable of SDR color gamut, HDR does nothing

Myself, holding the switch 2 in front of me, i think it's a phenomenal screen for an lcd display and I haven't had any criticisms about it the way one might have about the original switch display for example


And those who wait for the inevitable switch 2 oled refresh will likely end up getting the best screen
