Gay marriage salt thread

So after a string of chicken little/fire & brimstone/WE'RE THE VICTIMS religious memes, my friend's mom & co. decided to go all out racist nut:

I guess I shouldn't be all that surprised since the last time I saw her she was raving about the Freemasons, but wow.

I should really stop accepting invites from friends' parents. It never ends well.

I mean seriously, what kind of checks can you go through to stop gay people from shopping in your store *cryingwithlaughter.emoji*

Honestly I wonder if you bought something from that store and then told him you were gay would he demand you give the items back and refund your money?

Why would you tell him? "I might be gay, I might be not. You'll never know. I have a wedding ring. But you don't know if it's my husband or my wife!"

Muhahahahahah.

"Hi, I bought this broom from your store, it worked really well at first and my husband loved it, but the danger of splinters caused us to seek more appropriate marital aids. Would you accept it used?"

Most of my friends on facebook are psychologists like myself and all of them support gay marriage... it was kinda boring :P

Yeah, it's always astonishing to me how many opponents of same sex marriage don't realise this parallel:

GayMarriageCartoon2.gif

The "gay people never procreate" argument is especially funny to me, because I have lesbian parents (and one of them is my biological mother).

*vanishes in a puff of logic*

I always think of this when I see the 'You can't call me a bigot for having a different opinion' defense. I ask what they would call someone who opposed interracial marriage. I have yet to receive a reply that makes any sense.

Reading some of the posts from opponents is a combination of funny, sad and inexplicable hate for others based on religious beliefs. In Ontario we've had gay marriage since 2003 and Canada officially passed the law in 2005, and I don't recall anything close to the vitriol that I've seen in the past week from Americans.

Every once in a while I'll hear a conservative say something like "oh I don't agree with it on religious grounds" but those instances are few and far between. The people against it just sort of tolerate it here and move on, no one wants to kill homosexuals or take away their rights.

At least the US did something right, and in the long run, they will be on the right side of history because everyone deserves to have equal rights. Hope in 50 years when I am old, these types of comments from people are seen in history books and taught like the bigoted hate from whites during the civil rights movement.

Holy hell, all the "tolerate our intolerance" memes from the right are astounding. You'd think some of them would question themselves about the issue a little, and ask "what if I just swapped in interracial marriage, which was illegal in 1967, into my argument?"

For some reason after reading this I picture someone going in to buy something, then do what you say, and then immediately exit like Zoidberg along with that woop-woop-woop noise he makes.

Or wait until the transaction is complete and say 'this hammer is just what my husband and I need to hang our wedding pictures, thank you for doing business with me' and then quickly exit.

But only once and then nobody should buy anything from there.

Why, their religious beliefs are the only thing that matters.

"Fuck everyone else, it's all about ME, MY beliefs, the world revolves ME and people who share MY beliefs"

That's how they view the world. To them, nothing else matters. If something doesn't fit into that narrow, myopic world view, its wrong.

This mindset is so hard to comprehend. Why do these idiots care what other people decide to do with their lives? It doesn't affect them at all, what is the fucking problem with them? Even if their religion says it's wrong, it still has zero effect in their personal lives. It makes absolutely no sense to me.

From what I have been gathering from what they are saying, they are afraid their god is going to punish the whole nation for it.

Which, I gotta say, why are they worshipping an asshole then that will punish them for other peoples' transgressions. If he truly is an almightly God, he should easily be able to just punish those who did wrong. Therefore, if he has to punish everyone for some people's actions, he's just a dick and I'm not sure why they think he's such a good guy.

So this is going around facebook. A friend posted this to say that it us homophobic and that anyone who posts this is an idiot and someone posted that it isn't homophobic and said what's wrong with straight pride lmao.

Also invoked MLK to tone police me when I told him how homophobic and ridiculous it was. He also invoked the whole it's no homophobic because phobias are defined as irrational fears and there's no fear there. Then when I said that's not what homophobia means in this say in age he said he was using the right definition and that I and everyone else was the word in a socially miscontrued fashion.

Best of all he has his profile picture rainbow filtered ><

People who celebrate straight pride are in the same league as people who bitch about there not being a white male history month.

They both serve as idiot beacons.

Actually, one of my mom's students in New Zealand responded to that pic with this

Well, someone spilled the beans. The Catholic forum that's having a meltdown over gay marriage is now aware of us. If there's anything you'd like to say to them, you may as well say it here, because at least some of their members are reading it :p

95% of all disagreements about homosexuality and gay marriage stem from one side believing that homosexuality is a part of who a person is, and the other side believing that it is a behavior that is chosen. It's sort of like how the abortion debate works. Pro-choicers aren't Anti-life, and Pro-lifers aren't Anti-choice. All disagreements about abortion are ultimately a question as to where life begins. In both cases, all other arguments are essentially fluff. If everybody agreed on what the actual point of debate was, things would be a lot easier.

So if there is any actual "reasonable" dialogue to be have where people legitimately want to try and convince the other side of their respective viewpoints, the dialogue has to about whether homosexuality is a choice or not.

And nearly every single homosexual will tell you that they did not choose to be attracted to the same sex. So if you want to make the argument that homosexuality is a choice, you've got quite the hill to climb.

On some level, yeah, the conversation being had here and there is mismatched because literally everyone's paradigm is different, but some of the posts that have been posted here are beyond diff'rent strokes. Incredible ignorance is more than a miscommunication--it really speaks to what those posters really believe. No amount of coming together will change that someone thinks a person and their fundamental being are separate things.

And when one's logical reasoning or scientific proof is met with the response "that must be the work of the devil" or "God is testing us" you know which side is right...

Looks like those shitbag bakery owners here in Oregon who refused to make the cake for a gay couple have now been fined:

Gees these people just don't get it. You have all the freedom of religion you could possibly want. Believe in Jesus, believe in aliens, believe in whatever you want and go to your church. You just can't impose yourself or your beliefs on others and you got to treat people the way they deserve to be treated, just like a human being exactly like you are.

I just don't get these people. If I was against straight people or Christians, and had the most popular store in town and refused to serve them can you imagine the shit storm? All of a sudden the rights they claimed they had wouldn't apply to me because now it would be affecting them directly.

The Golden Rule. "Do unto others...". I learned it in Sunday School, and took it to heart when I was 7 years old.

It always stuns me that these hypocrites make no attempt to live what they preach.

LOL

I fully understand why some religious folks disagree with the concept of gay marriage. I'm a Christian and believe in a lot of the values (though I'm much more interested in simply being a good person than following the Bible verbatim). I've spoken to plenty more devout friends over the years.

But uh, this is one thing that simply isn't debatable. I mean, you are straight up on the wrong side of history here. There is no gray area with something like this. There is equality, and then there is inequality and prejudice.

I don't think these idiots know what freedom of speech and freedom of religion mean...You can say whatever you want but that does not mean there is no consequences for those words. You can believe whatever you want, but you cannot discriminate against other people who have the same rights as you do. Also if you do not serve man then you shouldn't be in a business that serves humans then.

Edit: I am referring to the bakery people specifically.

Straight Pride? That icon is so ugly, it'll be lucky if it only causes Straight Shame.

For the Catholics in my family, I think stressing this one thing made a huge difference in their views:
the debate that took place at the Supreme Court was only about civil marriage - not Holy Matrimony. These are two very distinct concepts, and I've noticed over the years that a LOT of confusion and conflict arises when there are parties in the dialogue who either (1) don't know there's a difference or (2) don't accept that there's a difference.

Now, if folks refuse to acknowledge that there's a difference between the two concepts, or that it makes no difference legally.. I don't know what more dialogue there is to be had.

edit: that Mario Kart metaphor.. wow!
