Giant Bomb Endurance Runs: Season Two - Who The Hell Is Zach?

Urgh, this thread pisses me off. Fuckers who think DP is shitty, without having even played the game, deserve to be punched in the nipples.

I've played it, and it is shitty.

Haha, just finished watching both. As far as the first episode goes it's VJ > BR by a large margin. VJ have the experience and kinda just roll with it while BR come off like they really don't wanna be doing this and are being forced which was funny in its own way but will get annoying in the long run.

I'm still watching both though, this shit's just too good.

I do think that if you're gonna have two teams of Endurance Runners, they should be doing different games.

Unless the game design is sufficiently open to allow for substantially different playthroughs, at least. Does Deadly Premonition branch at all or are we just going to be watching the two teams doing the same things?

Its an open world game with plenty of side missions to do.

watched them both when I got home. nice, relaxing way to spend my early evening :D

game looks pretty, um, odd but I think it’ll make for a good ER game once it supposedly opens up.

Love how both episodes ended.
I hear the stick clicking back and forth. what’s going on? :lol

Nice! I wish more sites would pick up on this formula and crank ER's out at a V/J level of quality, as there are lots of games I'll never bother playing, but would love to watch MST3K style.

My god, those textures...

Ummmm...its called lparchive and its got everything from the informative to the creavite to the comedic to the skillful. And that just one site that does it.

It's weird, brad plays "better" here but at the same time he plays worse. He didn't think about ammo whatsoever considering it's a survival horror, he just got lucky that the game had infinite ammo. Vinny actually thought about it which ended up making it harder for him, lol.

But unlike Vinny, Brad checked early on to see if the gun had infinite ammo, and when it did, he knew he didn't have to use the pipe for everything.

Vinny only "thought about it" in the sense that he assumed ammo was finite since he was playing a survival horror game.

Plus the ammo was counting down and Vinny mentioned at one point it looked like the infinite sign was for the wear of the weapon.

Game *plays* like shit. Story's compelling but I seriously could not stomach how bad everything else was.

It was a reasonable assumption for Vinny to make (the infinity sign does look like it's where wear ought to be), but it was an assumption nonetheless. Brad checked the pause menu to make sure that ammo wasn't an issue.

Also, I haven't played Deadly Premonition at all, but it seems to me like Zach is the protagonist's way of referring to the player, as a sort of way of indirectly breaking the fourth wall.

Judging by the responses of those who have actually played it, though, there's probably more to it than that.

As compelling as a Sci-fi channel originally made movie.
Which makes it immediately more compelling than almost 99% of the story-driven games this generation. Let's face it: there's virtually nothing in video game or computer game land that comes close to the passive mediums, such as television, stage, film, or traditional literature that value strong writing. Video games, though, cannot usually afford the time and volume of non-interactivity to dedicate to great writing if they want to be strong interactive experiences. Instead of trying to judge it against other games or other experiences that focus on storytelling, and just enjoying it for what it was, I thought it was great fun. I think a lot of people will miss out because they can't help but be repulsed, partly due to their expectations for better quality visuals and only the top 1% of execution in control and streamlined game design in anything they play. I view that as their loss. Really, the game part of DP isn't even close to being terrible once you get over it not being very polished and refined. Certainly, it helps to remember that it is a $20 title, too.

When it comes to the history of stories in gaming, that would mean it ranks pretty highly.

Eh, he did notice the infinite symbol but assumed it was the durability since for the pipe/knife there was a meter there. I would probably have been the same as him the first time through, though Brad checking the ammo in the menu was a good call either way.

Beaten...had the tab open longer than I thought!

I feel like this important bit of information is being overlooked.

Brad: "Oh... the controls are like...did you play any of the Playstation Resident Evil games?"
Ryan: "No."

WHAT

Yep that seemed weird, not even one? come on!

Eh, I've still never played a Resident Evil game. Just doesn't interest me. And I've only played part of the first Metal Gear Solid.

I'll probably do like with P4, in that I'll wait for a week's worth to go up then watch them over the weekend. I know they never will, but P3 would be fun sometime for them to try.

It'd be nice if they could do P3P, but Vinny having finished P3 and just the jankiness of PSP recording kind of makes it almost impossible.

Do you hold a position where a decent knowledge of gaming history is vital to the job?

(I'm not really saying playing RE1-3 is a must for the position or anything, but they were major enough games where it's definitely surprising when someone in that line of work hasn't played 'em at all.)

I don't know if Vinny ever finished P3. He seemed to have no idea that
the school they visited on the class trip in P4 was Gekkoukan.

Ryan and Jeff have both said they don't like RE in previous podcasts, which is why they were indifferent to RE5 as well.

Yeah. I just chalked that up to a forgetful memory more than anything else.

If anything, replaying the game as a SheMC (or whatever the abbreviation is nowadays) would be interesting for them. :lol

a) Not liking something should probably mean they played it in order to establish that opinion.
b) I can see that attitude after 1-CV, but following RE4? Madness!

Already played Deadly Premonition and loved it. These guys are in for a hell of a ride.

Best part of episodes 1-1 and 2-1.
I'm thinking we call VJ episodes 1-[blank] (my reasoning is that they are the original, I'm not talking quality here) and BR episodes 2-[blank]. This is just a suggestion, and if anyone has a good idea, I'm all ears. :lol

I do enjoy BR for this episode because Brad gets through the places quicker and Vinny has that habit of checking everything slowing it down, but the P4 nostalgia has me liking VJ a bit more.

Also really glad they're playing this so I never have to.

Having just watched both, I think I'm going with Team VJ. It's an unfair comparison, but the Endurance Run chemistry is just there, man! And also I like watching Vinny play more because he's incredibly meticulous about stuff, just like I usually am. Though the Brad-Ryan run is pretty damn funny too.

That said, I don't know if I'm going to keep watching either since I have this copy of Deadly Premonition given to me by the Mangod himself sitting on my shelf. I might end up sitting this one out until after I play through game myself... or decide I hate it and give up.

How on earth can you award points for efficiency of a 20-hour+ playthrough? "Oh sure, it's like watching someone get a root canal, but if he enjoyed it it would have taken longer!" It's going to be a complete waste of time either way, better that it's worth watching.

Didn't really mean in terms of time and more of pacing. Examining every single object before doing the action, especially since none of the text for observing is particularly entertaining, made me appreciate how BR gets from point to point so it can get to the cutscenes/QTEs which seem like the best part.

This just isn't true. How can you not love the clumsy jab at RE4 (No reclusive, hairy brutes here!) or the unreadable/readable sign? Not to mention they both missed out on the best velvet room observation (Of the mannequin:
It gives me the creeps somehow, though it might be useful for jackets and such.
)
