Gintama° Series 3 |OT| It's Not Digimon Tri, But It'll Have To Do!

We're finally getting a serious arc from Gintama which means that it'll be at its best story wise. The new characters have strong introductions which has me invested in their story. Just because it's serious doesn't mean the jokes end. We got some DBZ jokes and since the whole arc features a reaper character it's obviously full of Bleach jokes. I'm interested in hearing more of Gin's past since he's on the list of criminals at the end. Lastly, I hope someone keeps track of how many times Gin's nipple gets stolen and put back. Poor nipple.

Holy shit I just learned that episode 7 (the Kuroko parody) actually played the real Kuroko opening during the beginning recap, but crunchyroll took it out. Why!!!

I wonder if the design changes in these episodes will stick? Even the Edo-era like areas had tiled floors or paved roads in the newest episode, rather than only the modern area of the city.

Because they don't have rights to do that internationally, most likely. They also used bgms from the original Gundam for that Elizabeth/Gundam/StarWars parody arc in Gintama', but removed it from the stream version.

That really sucks. I would have flipped out if I heard that when it aired, as I was watching Kuroko at the time. KnB is on Crunchyroll too...

I'm quickly catching up to the anime, currently at Ep240
Must say that the move to 16:9 and general higher quality are a very welcome change

The Reaper Arc continues strong with Yaemon's true plan revealed as well as some more insight into Gintoki's past. I'm glad more arcs are incorporating his past as it continues to build on one of the best characters in anime. Gintama is the best as it usual dwells on silly comedy moments yet it still reminds us that out goofy hero isn't a nice guy as he's killed all his life and is a known criminal. It's just a difficult transition to turn a comedy show into such an amazing drama yet Gintama continues to achieve this with ease. Next week is sadly of this arc yet I hope Asaemon is a permanent addition to the cast but I fear that she'll meet her demise next week. I'm excited for next week as it looks like it'll give us a great fight to end this great arc. This episode also gave us some much needed KaguraxSougo love.

A wonderful end to the best arc of the new Gintama season. It follows the typical serious arc with the bad guy being redeemed in some way while a promise is fulfilled in some way with Aseamon and Gin. I wish a more prolonged battle occurred but it was still a strong emotional story. Tsukky's got some new competition for best girl with Aseamon hopefully being a perminant part of the story. Besides the main conflict we got a new look at a new villain which is in some alliance with Takasugi which is never good. Look at this smug bastard

I hope the story continues strong as we learn more about Gin's past as it still continues to be fascinating. I'm happy with this arc as mostly everything went well....oh shit RIP Gin's nipple for real now.

That was a good arc, and I'm glad to see that they're doing a special ED for arcs like this again. Also, Madao episode next week!

Good arc. Gintama is always great at these more serious arcs. It also introduced Nobunobu which will probably be a super important character going forward, especially with his connection with Takasugi.

I hope Asaemon is a new recurring character.

Gintama is usually great at adding new characters to it's recurring cast. I'm sure she'll show up again.

One of the better arcs in show for me and yeah... Tsuki ain't got shit.

Hasegawa epsiodes are the best, so yay for next week!

Best episode this season, honestly. Drama was on-point, but I dunno, this new team doesn't seem to have really gotten into the comedy groove yet...

Hasegawa episode gives me hope, but when's Katsura gonna get a good episode again to himself? The Jackie Chan episode is still one of the greatest episodes of the show imo.

I think it's time for another harem parody. I would love to see Tsukki and Sa-Chan going all out against Asaemon.

I don't know, Asaemon is young. I think she see Gintoki like a old brother, same way that Kagura and Shinpachi see him.

Gintama 281

The way the screen was gradually cracking emphasized how really broken Yaemon is. It showed us that instead of following the footsteps of his father and carrying his ideals he instead created his own twisted ideal in protecting his family name. By killing the people his father let loose which was going against his father's ideal. The screen cracking further shows how caught up Yaemon was in becoming a executioner but not realizing the actual duties his father was carrying.

Asaemon on the other hand was the opposite of Yaemon. She wanted to protect her father's ideals while Yaemon wanted to protect the family name. Which is the reason why her father wanted to be executed by her sword because he knew his daughter was the Human that could turn him from a Demon into a Human again. As opposed to Yaemon because he was a unstable Demon and a Demon couldn't turn another Demon back into a Human.

This Shinigami arc has to currently be the darkest arc of Gintama so far, especially how it was visually handled. The moment where Yaemon's head was sliced of clean and everything surrounding him turning red showed that Yaemon isn't really the villain but a puppet being used. The way you see his corpse standing for a few seconds through a side shot and how his head splashed on the water conveyed how entirely twisted that scene was. The new character is shown to be intimidating and will be the villain for the series later on. He seems to be working with Takasugi temporarily. The Shinigami arc was definitely a big set up to what's going to occur later on in the series and it ain't going to be good that's for sure.

Holy Fucking Shit......... I just realized that the scene above where Gintoki is struggling to walk. The place he's accidentally heading for is Otose's husband's tombstone, that fucking reveal. It filled in the gap on how Gintoki met Otose. When the Executioner let Gintoki escape it lead to him meeting otose. This arc just connected to the 4 Devas arc. Also the Opening even had that scene where Gintoki is laying next to the tombstone. Honestly after realizing that it made me tear up a bit.

In the end she executed the old Asaemon and became a new person as the 19th Ikeda Yaemon by protecting her father's ideals. As a Human she was able to turn the Demon that was Gin into a Human again. That was such a nice ending to the arc and the Opening song that was playing was just phenomenal. Honestly I can understand if some didn't like this arc as much especially if they were expecting lots of comedy because this is Gintama. However to me this arc was really strong in visuals, direction, OST, setup, and the theme that was presented. The theme itself is one of the biggest reasons why I enjoyed this arc. Executioners learned how to not cut someone's head off in order to cut their sins and not disgrace them by not having their heads touch the floor. Which is why it was said that a Human is the only person to turn a Demon back into a Human. The theme was deep and meaningful and one of the best in Gintama if not best. I give the Shinigami arc a 10/10 for giving us some great reveals about Gintoki's past and the big setup for future developments. It's pretty much one of my favorite arcs in the series. I also have to give some props to the new Staff for experimenting different visuals for this arc because it was spot on and unique.

First thing first I FINALLY CAUGHT UP! It only(lol) took me 6 months, but i'm finally on par, and thank god i did it with the Shinigami Arc finale. Good stuff.

Second, today's episode was hilarious and totally unexpected.
Those Saint Seya jokes what the fuck man

They did a really good job with this episode. Between last arc and this episode it seems this new staff is starting to get into a good groove understanding what makes the Gintama manga great.

I like this season since chapter 1. If you guys don't mention it, I would't know that it has a new staff.

The Andromeda and Phoenix story took me by surprise. :lol

Gintama goes back to its roots with a funny episode featuring our favorite bum MADAO. It was a pretty funny episode featuring tons of Saint Seiya references. The ED was a neat treat to cap it off. Hopefully they won't get a call from anymore copyright agencies.

With the Shogun next episode, is this a one-off or is this leading into a new-arc since judging by the OP I guess we're getting one with him?

Nah, this should be a one-off.
I really don't remember any arc with the Shongun
besides the one that ended recently
in the Manga, and we have a lot of stuff to cover anyway.

Oh my god lol, the ending for this episode was perfect.
The Shogun teaming up with Katsura to take down...himself?!
They could've ended things right there really, but there's at least one more episode.

If only I could convince more of my friends to give this a shot. What is it about this show that makes it so hard for people to start? There's nothing else like it.

They often start at the very beginning, where the Series is at it's worst. The things Gintama gets praised for are not there in the beginning. And the fact that it stays bad for the first 20+ Episodes doesn't make it any better.

Wich is why i always recommend to start with Episode 202.
202+203 are great to give new Viewers a basic Idea how Gintama rolls, also it's filled with Jokes about Dragon Ball, Bleach and One Piece, three Series that everyone who is a little into Anime knows, wich means that many will get the Jokes.

If they liked those two Episodes i also recommend to watch the following two Episodes too. If they like those then they can start from the very beginning, because then it's easier for them to believe that the Series will get better at one point.

My way of recommending Gintama get's mostly ignored by other Gintama Fans even though it works. That makes me sad :(

Well I'll attempt to recommend that and see if it works, clearly just telling them to watch Gintama isn't. So can't hurt to try, thanks!

It most certainly works. I first started watching Gintama during that season on a whim. I saw the first 2 episodes, liked it a lot that I decided to watch it from the beginning. Loved every moment!

No Problem ^^
It's the same way i got to into Gintama, even though in my case i was just watching from 202 onwards until the latest available Episode at that Time(i think it was somewhere around 225), and then decided to catch up on the previous 201 Episodes.

I felt like a kid who just entered the Toy Section of a big store too see that the Series that i started to love had 200 more Episodes in stock for me. And it was the same for my little Brother and the two other Guys i introduced to Gintama that way.

I really hope it works out the same way for your friends too ^^

I started at episode 200 with the new season (and transition to widescreen!) and that's how I got into the series. It helps that the show is so tropey that if you are at all familiar with anime or Asian heroic bloodshed films, you can immediately understand the characters without needing the backstory. It also helps that Benizakara-hen got the movie around the same time that 200 aired, and it's another great way to get into the show.

Small correction, you are actually talking about Episode 202, like me!
I used to do the same mistake, until i noticed that in reality 200 was the second-to-last Episode of Season 4, and the first Episode of the Santa-Story. 202 is the start of Season 5, and where the Series began to air in 16:9

You came into the series the same way like me haha

Gintama certainly isn't at it's best at the beginning, but I feel like the introduction of the characters and the gags are important. Only episode I would skip completely is the first one, which was filler.
