GOG's #NoDRM Summer Sale [UP: Last day]

It's the code that's completely legal open source, the assets are not.

Weird, did the rights change over the last few years? I'm almost certain it was freeware/openware when I last got it, and I'm almost certain FS2O gave me the source code and assets. It had it's own launcher that downloaded all Freespace stuff to boot. So have the rights changed lately, or did I come across a particularly fancy piracy system back then?

Today's deals are the Builder's Boon Bundle and the Rare RPGs bundle.

Also, fair warning: you have about 48 hours before Capcom, Interplay, Bohemian Interactive and Square Enix's games are removed from the sale.

Any highlights from these publishers that people should consider?

I'd say ArmA Cold War Crisis at $2.99 (although it'll probably be in an ArmA bundle that will be repeated tomorrow), Freespace 2 at $4.99, Anachronox at $2.99 (and Deus Ex 1 and the Thief games, obviously). Capcom only has one game on the service: Street Fighter Alpha 2, and I hear it's not a particularly good port.

Yeah, it's a lousy port. Surprised Capcom hasn't put more on GOG since they have plenty of old PC releases, even if they weren't great ports.

Thanks for that. I need to pull the trigger on Deus Ex and Omikron.

Should I get both of the FreeSpace games or just FreeSpace 2? Not sure how I missed the series as I played the Decent games and Tie Fighter/Wing Commander games.

As i said earlier, i bought Neverwinter Nights.
Well, now i was going to play it but... How the fuck do i get rid of that rotating background in character generation screen? Seeing stuff rotate in my vision will make me nauseous very, very quickly, and char-gen takes quite long for me...
Anything i can do?

Alright, someone is making you choose, Icewind Dale or its sequel. Which one do you take? Never played an ID game and would like to try one.

(I know I should buy both, but I already have a huge GOG backlog and have spent a shit ton of money :lol)

DAY 7

(I think? I've lost count)

Omerta All-inclusive (Omerta + The Con Artist DLC + Damsel In Distress DLC + The Arms Industry DLC: $10.96

Superb Sierra Selection (King's Quest 1-8 + Space Quest 1-6 + Quest For Glory 1-5 + Police Quest 1-4 + SWAT 1+2): $24.72

Is it safe to assume that the Square/Capcom/Bohemia/Interplay games have no more opportunities to be on sale? Not sure if it's tomorrow it'd be expiring

Im in the same spot but for Baldur's Gate, almost. Thinking of buying BG1, but it's a big time investment and generally people say BG2 is great on its own, but using Tutu and have this epic adventure of humongousness with BG1+2+ToB sure is tempting. But not sure if the time is worth it.

Hmm. I personally think BG II shits on the first BG from a great height. I replayed it last year with some balance and tweak mods, threw on an widescreen fix, and had a total blast.

Not that the first game is bad, so either way you're making a good choice, but you aren't hurting the BG II experience much by skipping BG 1.

Picked up Temple of Elemental Evil and Icewind Dale over the weekend. Man I forgot how not-hand-holdy wrpgs used to be. Early on every fight is one bad roll from being game over.

Dudes, are the Gothic games worth looking into? For reference I loved the shit out of Risen, one of my favourite RPG's ever.

Yes, you'll love the first three. Gothic 4 is more of an action RPG though.

All three seem to be pretty awesome, so the key question here, which one has the best atmosphere/music?

Edit: Went with 3, want to jump in and play, the first two seemed to have some setup time :)

Every time there's a GOG sale I think of this:

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOG!!!!!!!

I know, weird.

Gog should have held the day of all the deals until closer to the end. Now every day's deal is just underwhelming.

75% off - underwhelming?

This way people can see the deals, decide what they want, and plan their budgets vs. spending too much too early then not being able to buy something they really want later on.

I believe it's been suggested that there are still one or two bundles that weren't in that day.

It's a slightly odd setup, really. GoG theme it around the solstice, which isn't too bad an idea, but it does mean that the majority of the content for the sale is revealed comparatively early on. That said, they're also somewhat constrained in that they had a more limited sale period for some publishers, so they do need the day-of-all-deals to coincide with a point when all pubs are in play.

Finally, I think it's a deliberate gambit to try to get the majority of *their* sale in peoples' consciousness before Steam has its. Steam's summer sale may well hit this week, and that's quite likely to turn focus away from GoG's. Even if people don't purchase a bundle on the day-of-all-deals, at least the bundle is then advertised to people and if it does crop up again, there's more chance of people pouncing.

This sale was sooooo awesome, I envy people who got to buy so many games so cheap.
I have most of them, still bought Evoland, King of Dragon Pass and Fez.
Long live GOG!
I hope people bought Arcanum, because it's like no1 must play game on PC!

I do all of my computer gaming on my MacBook Pro. So I took advantage of the Wadjet Eye bundle because those are all mac games, FTL and Alpha Centuri (which does not play well on a mac FYI)

But that means there are a limited number of games available to me. I wish there was a Mac-centric bundle somehow, but I know I am in the minority of computer gamers.

So I bought UnEpic from GOG because of this deal with the specific intention of playing Multiplayer with my SO... but it seems that UnEpic from GOG has no multiplayer.

WTF.

Still a fun game...

So CDProjekt just released their preliminary sales data. It's in Polish, thanks to SCPM at GOG forum who provided some translations:

The success of the summer promotion and record sales GOG.com Added: 2013-06-25

GOG.com, the digital distribution service owned trading game CD Projekt Group, noted last week record sales and traffic. This effect still ongoing, annual summer promotion organized by the platform

"In the 48 hours between 18 and 20 June we had over 1.1 million unique visitors come to our site. Most importantly, more than half of them are guests who have visited us for the first time "- said the managing director Guillaume Rambourg GOG.com.

The summer promotion that will last until July 5, GOG.com overestimated over 500 games it offers. In addition, players for the first 48 hours of the promotional campaign can download free classic production of "Torchlight". Service users have downloaded the nearly 2.5 million times.

The promotional campaign has translated into excellent sales results.

"Friday, June 21 was our best day ever in terms of net sales" - said Rambourg. GOG.com operational since 2008 was initially service specializing in the sale of old - the "classic" - games tailored to the requirements of modern equipment. Currently in its offer includes nearly 600 titles, including the newer and more expensive games. However, service specializes in independent films and his trademark is the lack of DRM that often impede the use of legally purchased software. GOG.com is now one of the most popular independent digital distributor of computer games in the world and a major alternative to the global market leader - Steam service.

Since the beginning of digital distribution platform, which is only a few percent of the revenues generated in Poland, denotes a dynamic growth. In the first quarter of 2013, its revenue rose to 13.26 mln zł zł to 6.25 million in the previous year and net profit to 2.72 million to 0.89 million zł zł.

GOG.com, was recently recognized by the magazine "Time" as one of the 50 best websites in the world.

Wow, Gothic 3 is hitting the exact right spots, fantastic soundtrack as well. Definitely going to check out the first two in the future.

Any way to increase the LoD distance though? It's kind of horrible at times.
That and being able to see the actal edge of the world when you're near the coast is kind of odd.

Edit: Yep, played a few more hours and god damn is it good. I'm sure it helps that the GoG version uses the latest community patch out of the gate too. Sogood.gif

Are you playing Gothic 3 with the fan patch and mods? Cuz I was told it's the weakest Gothic games but the patches and mosd improve it.

What the hairy... ?

Freespace 2 back up to $10? Shit, I was waiting to see if it went under $5 and now it's back to $10?!?!

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!

khaaaaan.jpeg

I have a boxed copy of Freespace 2.. I wouldn't sell that for $400. That game is simply unmatched in its genre, it could easily re-retail for $40 if you ask me. If you are sweating over $10, just don't. Buy it.

No Riddick dailies are planned, AFAIK.

In other news, your last, last chance to get cheap ArmA this sale, and also the nearly complete Ultima is back on sale.

Wait...do they actually announce what will be the dailies for the rest of the sale?

So it won't go lower than 50% off?

I assume he's referring to the fact that no Riddick dailies appeared in the massive day of sales last week, which is quite true.

That said, it's probably fair to note that last year there were one or two bundle sales that didn't appear in last year's big day of sales, so it's not an impossibility that there's a further one on the way.
