GOG's #NoDRM Summer Sale [UP: Last day]

So what's the word on Freespace 2? I remember this being the best space sim ever... 15 years ago. I'd love to play it, but I'm worried that's nostalgia talking and that by picking it up again I'll disappoint one of the great memories of a game that I have.

Also, I've heard that it's not really gamepad friendly, which discourages me a bit.

Get it! Trust your nostalgia. :)

Plus, there are some mods that will make the game playable at high resolutions.

OK GAF, showdown time. My buying spree continues, but I'm faced with a decision. I have two ~$10 bundles lined up, but I can only choose 1 (funds :( ). I need a second opinion, since the two look similarly appealing in terms of content-to-price.

Which of the following is the most bestest?

1. Spiderweb Soft (+ Eschalon) bundle (I already own Geneforge 1-5, though);
2. Wadjet Eye bundle.

Also, is FTL worth it for $2.5?

YEs, buy FTL!

GOG will be the bane of me =( between this sale and the last christmas one, I've bought over 50 games, lol
Don't even know when I'll have time for them

This is probably a dumb question and I'm sure the answer is somewhere obvious that I'm missing, but how does GOG handle patching for more current games? Like FTL. Do you have to go out and manually find the patch? Or is the version GOG supplies already updated?

I was ableto get my 360 pad working with little effort. There are a couple weird elements, and you'll still need the keyboard due to not havig enough buttons, but I've been playing missions without needing the keyboard much.

Ugh. I own the entire "Kain and Raziel Saga" except for Blood Omen 2. I know it is supposed to be terrible but my OCD compels me to finish it out.

Gog will post the update in your library. You will need to download and install it.

I played Freespace 2 around 3 years ago, and holy shit, what a game. I'd still say it's the best space sim ever. The campaign is one of the best I've played out of any game. It's outstanding, intense and full of memorable moments.

I remember having no problems playing with a gamepad.

I should really replay it sometime, but with the FS2Open mods to make it look better.

So if I just now redownloaded FTL on a new laptop it's the updated version? Cool, thanks!

Can't really speak to gamepad use since I used M+KB, but I played it last year and it was still a blast. There's a massive graphical mod for it (I think it's the FS2Open that rockmanjoe mentioned) that updates all the visuals and effects and whatnot and makes it look pretty great. Once you get that then I think you're still in for a treat.

Wow, it's really hard to pass up on Fez and Dyad, but the summer sales are so soon and I prefer the convenience of having them in my Steam library.

Unfortunate for me but awesome that everyones getting some great DRM free games.

Sometimes they will just update the single build while other times they will release a separate universal patch that you just run and it install automatically.

Was considering it, but don't think I'd like it. It looks like all exploration and no challenge. It sounds more like a puzzle game than a platformer. Am I missing something? What makes it so special?
I don't really know, but it makes my head hurt. But I like it. It's incredibly hard to accurately define, but that alone would make it worth buying for a lot of people.

Finally folded on the D&D bundle.
Unfortunately the Missus came along while I was browsing the sales pages and 'forced' me to pick up the Myst-collection for her .... Ahh, Well you win some and you loose some :-P

Grabbed King of Dragon Pass, Faster Than Light and System Shock 2...

Think I might give King of Dragon Pass a whirl tonight...

Would buy more; but seriously... another 10 games to the backlog.

My poor backlog....

picked up..

Anachronox
Silver
System Shock™ 2
Septerra Core: Legacy of the Creator
Hotline Miami
FTL: Faster Than Light
Freespace + Expansion
Shogo: Mobile Armor Division
Freespace 2

+ Definitive Dungeons & Dragons bundle
+ Legacy of Kain Bundle

I've never played any Ultima game before, but I've been curious about them and that Ultima 1-9 + Underworld 1+2 set is intriguing. Out of those games, which are recommended to play for someone who's completely new to the series?

I bought Fez, enjoying it so far but damn is it easy to lose track of what you've done and where you've been. Quite a mind bender.

Bought DeusEx 1 & 2, System Shock 2 and Thief 1-3

Time to STEAM summer sale should pass quickly...

Just over an hour before most of these bundles get taken down. You'll probably see them all again, but be aware this remains the best day for buying GOG games in the sale outside of the last day.

Time's up. The Fair & Square bundle and Indie RPG bundle carries on for another 24 hours, and everything else will get sent back under lock and key until later.

You've never played the Oddworld games? Man, Abe's Oddysee and Exoddus are amazing! Great platformers with stunning artwork, atmosphere and so much humor^^ The game speak is a really cool feature and sometimes the puzzles are really challenging!

Definitely start with Oddysee. I think it's the best game, compared to Exoddus it has the better story IMHO. Although Exoddus has the better game mechanics. Still Oddysee will be my personal favorite because it was my first Oddworld game I've played.

Done deal!

Tempted by Deus Ex: Invisible War and Daikatana to complete the pack. Any strong feelings one way or another? I know Daikatana is a piece of shit but part of me wants to have it anyway. As for Invisible War, people seem quite split on it as a good game vs. poor sequel.

Is The Pit any good? I've been wanting a cool roguelike for a while now and I like the scifi theme.

Dunno if GoG version is different but for what it's worth I can't get IW to run on Win7 or 8

Edit: I'm also curious about Retro City Rampage, is that one of the games that's better to just watch an LP of to see all the fun little references?

One of the greatest games of all time, as far as I'm concerned, though there's no doubt a certain hint of nostalgia to that. Today, the tutorial missions at the start would have probably tested my patience, but you should just stick with them with the knowledge that an absolute masterpiece lies ahead.

The last time I played it I remember playing with a 360 controller for the main ship functions, but using the keyboard for a bunch of other stuff. I really don't think you can play this solely with a controller, too many buttons. That was ~4 years ago and the game held up mind-bogglingly well. Get some mods to tart up the graphics(there are lots) and treat yourself to a classic. Fuck, I'm half tempted to go install it again now.

I just dropped by to say you should all buy Guilty Gear X2.

Total Overdose is better than expected. Basically an open world Max Payne. Shame no widescreen mod.

Is The Pit any good? I've been wanting a cool roguelike for a while now and I like the scifi theme.
It's decent. It's got a lot of good ideas, but personally I got bored with it quickly.

Is Blood 2 any good?

Thank you to all!

The only other question is whether it'll go lower than $5. I'm looking at FS2 and Planescape: Torment ... and maybe Giants: Citizen Kabuto, another nostalgia trip.

Is Blood 2 any good?

Blood 2 is solid, though it's nothing like the first game, if that's what you're expecting. It's most similar to Shogo, which shouldn't be surprising given they're both Monolith games, running on the same engine, released at approximately the same time. The game is pretty difficult, and I wouldn't recommend it if you don't like quicksaving every 5 seconds.

Some people really dislike Blood 2, though.

Thanks. I think I'll just buy Shogo instead. Never played it back when it came out.

Shogo is definitely the better game. Whether or not it's aged well... I'm not so sure. But it was unbelievably good back in the day.

Speaking of Monolith shooters... why the hell isn't FEAR on GOG yet?

Well I caved and bout the Roller Coaster Tycoon triple thrill pack. I already own the game, but not the expansion packs. It's also nice to have a DRM free version. disc version requires you to have the disc in the computer unless you download a patch.
Thinking of Rollercoaster Tycoon 2. But how will it run on Win 7 64bit? And how will it look on my 1920x1200 monitor?
Not sure about a 1200 monitor, but it looks fine on my 1080p monitor. Best resolution to run it at is 720p so you have widescreen, and so everything doesn't look so small. You'll probably have to have black bars at the bottom and top of your game if you don't want the aspect ratio off.
