Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 |OT| Anyone can save the galaxy once - SPOILERS!

Star-Lord survived all that before because he was immortal. Once Ego was killed, he wasn't. That was an integral part of the plot.

Yes, Yondu had to die.
Specifically, Yondu dying is a callback to multiple things from the first movie.

The first is Groot's sacrifice when he uses himself as an airbag and leaves them with Baby Groot. Parent protecting family thematically.

The second is when Peter saves Gamora and nearly freezes to death. We're shown people freezing and dying earlier in this film as well. It recontextualizes it because we're now understanding why Peter survived that.

I must have fallen asleep when they explained how Peter's very being was inextricably tied to his father's existence.

I remember them throwing the ball around, calling Peter immortal, and sharing his crazy plan. I do not recall when the whole "If I die, you no longer have powers." thing happened.

So yeah, I need to watch the movie again.

Ego tells Peter that if he dies, he will be like everyone else and peter say something like, "what's wrong with being like everyone else?".

It was literally when Ego said "If you do this, you'll be normal".

Kurt Russell's face when Peter lights up for the first time might be the best smidge of acting in the entire MCU. Dude looked like his son just hit a walk-off grand slam in the Little League World Series.

In the moment it was the joy of a dad teaching his son. In hindsight it was happiness that he finally achieved his goal to spread his virus across the Galaxy.

And you think it's pride in his son only to find out later it's because he finally has his tool to reshape the cosmos. Kind of sad in retrospect.

Seuss knows what's up.

He could tap into the godhood by staying with his father but without it he wouldn't have nearly enough power on his own. At least that's my reading.

He has no powers on his own, just some genetic quirks. Without the light at the core of Ego's Planet, he's powerless.

Some people complained about the amount of stingers.

I thought it broke the credits up in such a way that they didn't actually feel laborious like a credits scroll does.

Also, I loved all the Easter eggs and "I AM GROOT" morphs.

Yeah I dunno how people missed it. Ego kept repeatedly saying the importance of the "light" of his planet (a.k.a. his "brain" core).

I guess I got distracted and thought we were learning more about Peter himself, rather than linking all the exposition as a standalone thing.

and to know that this was reaction to finally getting a child with his power, after many failed attempts, so he could destroy all sentient life.

Kurt Russell in general looked like he was having the time of his life. Hasn't seem him chewing it up since Snake Plesskin days

Considering how everything went down, Ego should have just kept the lie going. He could have used Peter until the moment it was too late to stop.

Those people in the US city looking at the blob that was inactive lol. Like come the fuck on, I don't think you could blame your death on bad luck.

I am still on team Zemo for best MCU villain since Loki. Of course, I am an unashamed Zemo fan from the books, and even though I was extremely disappointed in no purple hood on film, movie Zemo was still awesome. Only villain to actually "win" in the end.

Part of being a god. He assumed Peter would understand, because why wouldn't he? He's completely incapable of seeing things from anyone else's perspective, and he thought showing Peter the cosmos through his eyes would be more than enough to quell any rebelling thoughts he might have.

Why did Ego want to eradicate life? Just because it was boring?

That scene where Ego turns and says life was mundane or whatever he said in front of the picture with his first meeting with another life.

Then we find out Ego put the cancer in Peter's mother as just something he throws out there.

Kurt Russell hit it out of the park.

I like how Ego said "god with a little g"

I guess because he knows there is shit out there that makes him look like chump change

Yeah it was good stuff. It's always nice to see something on the more subtle side of things like that pay off. First with the "I've been looking for you for so long" -- you mean 34 years out of the millions of years you've been around? -- and then with him selling that so hard it was at the point of suspicion, and probably a few other things, it's nice to see hints for the turn that are more than the typical over 'Mantis is clearly hiding a secret' type of "clue".

Yeah, but you know, "Ego". I think that once he had revealed godhood to Peter, Ego couldn't possibly conceive of him turning it down over something as minute and finite as a single mortal. I don't think he was purposefully throwing out some revelation to break the lie, it was more that he thought they were well beyond that sort of thing so he just blurted it out, like it was some prank for 25 years ago they could both have a laugh over.

Wasn't his reasoning that life as it was is disappointing and he wanted ALL life to be Ego?

I said earlier that him telling Peter about his Mom really shows you how fucked up Ego is. A story about how much he loved Peter's mom turned into him telling Peter how sad it was that he was forced to kill her, like he is the one to be pitied in this story.

I went in not knowing much about the movie on purpose, but I immediately said "That doesn't look good" when the Celestial Extender plant was dropped.

The way Peter's mom talked about Ego made me really not think there was anything nefarious about the plant. I thought it was just him spreading love and beauty to this planet that had the woman he dearly loved.

Not explicitly said but definitely heavily implied.

edit: Maybe I missed it, WHY did Ego kill Peter's mom? Because he was falling for her and it was easier to kill her as reason not to go back to Earth?
