Charr dislike the notion of gods, spirits, ghosts, and the like. Rytlock would be an odd choice.

I wouldn't mind seeing Ritualist return (minus direct healing), but Engineers did steal their primary gimmick, even if engineers do seem more about tools than turrets. Their ash pot mechanic is missing from GW2, but that might be down to how clunky it could be.

But there's all sorts of possibilities for new things. Even stuff Utopia hinted at like the Chronomancer. Although it seems like all the Quickness & swiftness skills are already doing that sort of thing now. Back in GW1 it would've been pretty unique. Who knows what they're cooking up for GW2.

They do, but however, even the Charr know the mists is some shady shit, so who knows what Rytlock could have seen.

Is the Vinewrath ripe (heh) for a guild event potentially? I'm not clear on how to access it myself.

GAFGuild Season 2 Event - 9:00PM EST, January 16th, 2015 - A Very Orry Christmas
christmasveuri.png

Come say a final farewell to the holiday season by bringing some Yuletide cheer to the one place in Tyria that needs it most. Deck yourself out, get your Mini Ho-ho-tron by your side, and let's conquer the unsunken lands of Orr one more time. The Risen could use some caroling, trust me.

Those of you battle-hardened by Operation Tidal Sword and Occupy Orr know what we're in for. We'll meet up at Fort Trinity, and then forge a path through the Straits of Devastation all the way to the Gates of Arah, the ruined capital of Orr. Along the way we'll liberate the temples to the 5 ancient Gods: Balthazar, Lyssa, Melandru, Grenth, and DWAAAAAYYYNNNAAAAAAA. Depending on whether or not we crush Balthazar's priest quickly, we may stop off in Zho'Qafa to poke Zhaitan in the Eye as well.

For our newer players, the temple events may be a little more involved than you're used to (especially Balthazar and Grenth), with a legitimate threat of failure. But GAFGuild will rise to the challenge! It's great loot- tons of Heavy Moldy Bags, which sell or can be opened for T6 mats- and Exotic armor and trinkets are available from the vendors which unlock after each Temple. Balthazar's vendor also sells Obsidian Shards if you're in need.

Minimum level is 70... any less than that and Risen Thralls will oneshot you on the move and you won't have any fun! Apologies to our newer members that don't have a character that high up yet; we'll make sure our next event is something everyone can attend.

Hope to see you guys there!

Come say your goodbyes to the Old News Elder Dragon too ;)

As ripe as any SW breach. Best bet would be to get GAF on a newly refreshed SW map and go from there up through breach and vinewraith, if you wanted to do that.

Ugh.. people still play this game? :p

I really should take some time this weekend to knock out the story chapters. I think I'm still on like.. Chapter 3 of this season.

Is guild chat broken? I can't use it in any of the guilds I'm in. It just says I'm not in one. :(

edit: nevermind, just started working again o_O

Thank you to Ike and Zeroth who helped me with getting all of the Point of No Return achievements. Now I'm just missing... every other season 2 episode... >_>

It's funny with the revelation of the final episode, that people now realize that ANet does know how to write and that the story all ties together quite strongly. Yes there are things still unresolved, but no story that is going to have many chapters resolves all of its plot threads before moving on. Gotta keep those threads there as a hook to keep the viewer/reader interested so that when they do come back around, the impact is that much greater.
I mean just look at Caithe's secret. That was a hint dropped 15 months ago and was finally resolved as the largest plot point in the entire arc. It completely changed everyone's outlook on ANet's writing and now people are looking back making tons of connections to past stuff that seemed insignificant at the time.

Was in Lornar's Pass tonight, just dinking around on my Mesmer, when I saw there was a downed player near an event. I made a beeline over but he was dead before I could help, and after clearing all the enemies off and giving him the ol' magic rub I noticed he was level 17 (Lornar's is 25-40, fyi). Broken armor, getting one-shotted by dredge snipers, everything, a total fish out of water. So after we finished the escort event, I asked him where he was headed because he was way under-leveled.

Completely new player. Was doing his personal story, wandered through the Asura Gate in Metrica to Lion's Arch and ended up in the middle of Lornar's Pass running his little Asuran butt past everything. I helped him get up to Snowden Drifts (where he was at least surviving a few hits and able to damage stuff), told him how to repair, showed him some vistas and such before I had to head off for the night.

Very friendly, very interested in learning, very apologetic for dying a lot. I could have pictured that going the complete opposite way, him getting frustrated at getting killed and not understanding why, asking map chat and getting called a noob and quitting.

Sharing this for no reason other than stories like this always give me the warm fuzzies.

It was
a worthy secret to have, her keeping it from everyone including Destiny's Edge is pretty believable as is the idea that her actions have all been in service of knowing how the world would react. I also didn't see it coming- not that this was the nature of the Sylvari as that was a long-held speculation, but that this was what Caithe knew- something that was of interest to both Scarlet and Faolain. I am slightly perplexed as to why she never told Trahearne. I'm not sure what good she possibly thinks could have come from that; wonder if that's a point that will ever be addressed.

It even very very slightly redeems Scarlet. One imagines that she discovered what Caithe knew and more from her interaction with the Eternal Alchemy, and developed a sort of "we might as well get this shit over with" attitude in response- whether she thought she could actually serve Mordemoth after awakening him or just knew the plan would kill her and didn't care. There was still way too much time spent of forming an enemy alliance-of-the-week and the way her character was written never hit many highs, but I definitely at least get it in terms of what they were going for with her as an antagonist, which I didn't before. Er, I thought I did, but was wrong.

The loose threads still to be wrapped up are interesting. I am worried that they will continue to rely on the "memory seed" or similar gimmicks to have us play as significant NPCs, but I really hope that however they handle it, there are fleshed out sequences regarding what happened to Rytlock, Canach post-Pact assault, and the dragon egg.

Nah, he didn't even accept the party invite the entire time we were running together, I figured that might be too much. I told him how to add me to his friends list and to ask any questions or for help if he needed it. I didn't think dumping him into GAFGuild all at once was a good idea. =p

Definitely, using flashbacks as a way to tell past events through the eyes of the NPC is a far more interesting form of storytelling than a speech bubble with some text. Also, from a gameplay standpoint, it allows them to break things up by giving you new sets of skills to use in different scenarios.

...is what really bugs me at the end of it all. I understand why Caithe and the Pale Tree hid the fact that they were wayward Mordrem spawn. Their fledgling civilization would've been burned to the ground the moment the other races found that out, but now they've found out anyway. And the core fleet of the Pact, the only faction willing and able to actually do stuff, was sacrificed for nothing.

In-story, I don't think anyone could have known for sure that Sylvari could be enthralled so quickly and completely. If Trahearne, top Pact leadership, and the nation leaders had forewarning of the Sylvari secret, there could have been contingencies. I like the Pact though, so I'm annoyed that they were made to suffer the Worf effect for the sake of stupidity and selfishness.

For story reasons though, removing the Pact allows Anet to do more interesting things, rather than just, "new dragon call the Pact and airship everything!" It also makes Old Moldy seem like a real threat, since so far all he has done was destory some forts and grow some vines, not particularly threatening compared to Zhaitan, who pulled an entire peninsula out of the ground and invaded the strongest city in the region. True, the tragedy could have been minimized if Treaherne knew beforehand, but the story would have been less interesting for it.

The expansion; Do you think we can come up with an idea of how much there actually would be in a expansion for GW2, by looking at what Factions and Nightfall offered, versus what the original game shipped with?

Guild Wars 1

  • 6 Classes (Warrior, Ranger, Elementalist, Necromancer, Monk, Mesmer)
  • 5 Character Slots for your account
  • 1000 skills (I recall it was around 1000, if you counted those that became "core" skills)
  • 6 Big Regions (Ascalon, Shiverpeak Mountains, Kryta, Maguuma Jungle, Crystal Desert, Ring of Fire Islands)
  • 25 Co-Operative Missions (main story)
  • 200 Quests
  • 3 Different modes of PvP (Random, HA, Guild Battle)
  • 8 Guild Halls

Factions
  • 2 Classes (Ritualist, Assassin)
  • New Character Creation-Factions themed faces, hairstyles for 8 classes (six original, 2 new)
  • 2 New character slots for your account
  • 330 Skills 240 Factions skills, 90 Elite Faction Skills
  • 13 Co-operative Missions (Main Story)
  • 5 Challenge Missions
  • 2 Elite Missions
  • 200 New Quests
  • Alliance PvP mode and 2 Competitive Missions
  • 4 Big Regions (Shing Jea Island, Kaineng City, Echovald Forest, The Jade Sea)
  • 4 New Guild Halls

Nightfall
  • 2 Clsses (Paragon, Deverish)
  • New Character Creation-Elonian themed faces, hairstyles for 8 classes (six original, 2 new)
  • 2 New character slots for your account
  • 460 skills (350 Nightfall skills,110 Elite Nightfall skills)
  • 20 Co-operative Missions, 2 new Challenge Missions)
  • 11 Heroes(?)
  • 250 Quests
  • PvP Hero Battles
  • 5 Big Regions (Istan, Kourna, Vabbi, The Desolation, Realm of Torment)
  • 4 New Guild Halls

Eye of the North
  • 41 new armor sets, including rare, stand-alone pieces
  • 100 new profession-specific skills (10 per profession, none of which are elite)
  • 50 new PvE only skills including 3 elite skills
  • 10 new heroes
  • 18 Dungeons
  • 124 new quests
  • The Hall of Monuments
  • 4 New Regions ( Charr Homelands, Depths of Tyria, Far Shiverpeaks, Tarnished Coast)

Looking at it like this, It of course makes one wonder - Will it be more like a stand-alone campaign, or more like an EoTN styled expansion. There is a clear difference in size of the content. If we look at the breath that was added, it looks like Factions and Nightfall are around 40-50% of the entire breath of content/feature set of GW1. In Factions, you got major features like branching story-faction and the Alliance PvP battles, which arguable was more encompassing than the entirety of PvP in GW1.
In Nightfall you have even more PvE than in GW1 but less PvP. Hero system, a really big content and almost 500 skills.
Another thing I forgot to think about was that I remembered ArenaNet was struggling with the armors and weapons they needed to make for the new classes to retro-fit. Wasn't this a big thing? Moving forward, they had more and more they needed to add, because not only did Paragon/Dverish/Ass/Ritualist need be their own full spectrum, they also needed armors in GW1 so you could take that character through those campaigns.

Guild Wars 2 Expansion - Predictions;
  • 2 New Races (with 1-30 personal story for each)
  • 1 New Weapon type per class. / 5 Weapon skills, 10-15 Heal-Utility-Elite, 20 skills total.
  • 1 New Trait Line per class
  • 2 new Dungeons (6 Dungeon Paths in total)
  • Many new Dynamic Events. If the current spectrum has a 1000 in the entire game, I would expect 200, at least.
  • Many more achievements
  • 4 new sPvP maps
  • 10-15 New Guild missions
  • 2 or 3 Big regions(Continuation of the Maguuma Wastes, and then 1-2 other regions). That would amount to around 30-40% of the landmass in GW2, and amount to what Factions/Nightfall had in contrast in GW1.
  • New Legendaries and some sort of new precursor acquisition system
  • Guild Battles system and infastructure. I think they have been cooking this in the background. It will be a major PvP focus of the expansion.
  • A new/updated Eternal Battleground map, but no new home-borders.

What there won't be in the expansion:
  • No new Classes.
  • No Mounts. There is just no way. If it turned out to be true I would fall off my chair and into the abyss.
  • No new Heart Quests.
  • No new large scale Guild-features.
  • No new personal story that continues after the Zhaitan fight. The narrative will run from LS.
  • No new dyes. Will come out periodically like it has been so far. A part of their Gem store bread'n butter.
  • No new hairstyles/faces. Will come out periodically like it has been so far. A part of their Gem store bread'n butter.
  • No new crafting professions. It doesn't seem needed. Fishing would be a mini-game if ever implemented.
  • No new Fractals. Will come in update releases. Fractals is a really nice way of fitting in past LS content and GW1 and other in-the-past content. It is not needed to add to this given the story and focus of the expansion.

Uncertain;
  • How many new armors? The dye system, the differences in races with each model, multiplied by gender variants, and now 2 new races, you have to consider if you think they have done a good job so far? Many unhappy Asura and Charr players. Polar Bears, Beak people, Quaggans or Rat-Men are all going to add to the difficulty. I think outfits was added to ease of the pressure from the programmers.
With clipping, sizing, and so on, I think it's a bigger clusterfuck of epic proportions than 95% of teh gaming community realizes. And obscene amount of time goes into making just one armor.
A way they could solve it, would be more race locked armor. Would this be a less evil? Or to keep the current path of outfits?
If you look at a game like SWTOR, they can pimp out tons of armors really fast, because their races share the same models and animations (which sucks) but it shows the flip side, of the argument.
  • Edge of the Mists? Right now it is a 800 pound guerrilla and nobody really knows what it will do in the future.
  • Guild Halls? Guild Airships? Personal instance? Ferocity-Dignity-Charm?
  • Living Story Season 1? Continuity problems for new players. Gating restrictions for new GW2 players who buy GW2 + expansion, but won't understand a thing without buying Season 2, but they won't understand that because of no Season 1.
  • There are things here that needs to be solved if they want to be faithful and make the Story Journal an actual experience you can follow.
  • Precursor - Scavenger Hunt - What will they do? Something must be done! And legendary Armor? What happens with the old Legendary?
  • Ascended Gear - New Ways of aquiring ascended armor?
  • What will happen with the 8 old Dungeons?
  • Will Orr be updated / Altered, for a Post-Zhaitan world. And will more of Orr be unlocked?

I think we'll definitely get at least one new weapon. Most likely spears readded as land weapons.

Second, a third heavy armor class would be baller.
