Has anyone Tried builds with the new Barrier System?
My biggest Gripe with the game right now is how unbalanced it's attribute system is. With the exception of situational use in Raids and PVP where collected gear doesn't matter, in the rest of the game if you are not playing a Glass Cannon you are playing it wrong.

With nothing really scaling with anything, I was hopping that this new mechanic would finally breath some life in the most underused attributes like Healing and Vitality.

I do wonder what misery it must be like to play this game in something like soldiers gear. A lot of the story fights feel well tuned for damage oriented builds, I can't imagine what it would be like to fight [any boss] with any appreciable amount of toughness or vitality.

Having spent the first year of my game playing a Soldier's warrior, trying to play into the standard warrior tank character style in PvE it's pulling teeth solo. Especially any story mission.

Something like a Shaman's or Zelot's Scourge would have an easier time just because their base damage is so much higher.

Yeah, I've only used healing stats in pvp where you can mess around with a druid and live for long periods of time with all the regen/healing/protection.

Otherwise it's Berserker all the way.

I think it's kind of dumb that you need to get an entire new set of armor, weapons and accessories just to use your weapons that work off of condition damage though.

That's why I only use them in PvP since you don't need to grind for them there.

Okay, I have a problem with this expansion pack: I'm not really sure what I should be doing.

I beat the story mode on my Engineer, and I sure as hell don't have enough gold for the griffon mount-- so I'm not going anywhere near that collection.

Is there a guide that shows off all new weapon/armor skins and how to unlock them?

I am the same man. Its wierd, I log in and feel aimless. Its really strange because apart from the lack of 'end game' its the best the game has been, yet I dont feel much of a draw towards it due to the lack of tangible goals. It used to be world completion then Legendary but that seems different now. I will take a break for a few weeks then come back to it I think.

The issue is Barrier doesn't scale well with Healing Power right now and degrades way too fast to be viable as a build centerpiece. Scourge support builds right now, for example, are based off of traits that add straight healing to Shroud skills and Might to some other stuff, but basically ignore Barrier. If they increased the time before Barrier starts degrading to 3 seconds and made the Healing Power scaling better, it could be powerful enough to make a build around. Atm, it's...not.

I think what people are feeling is just that the rewards in general are undertuned right now. Legendary Bounties, Map metas, and dynamic event chains are what should be the replay draw for the maps, but all the rewards (besides getting the Ascended elite spec collection) are far worse than HoT map metas or even Silverwastes.

Did the legendary bounty, feels good.

So most are just collect eggs, buy 25g stuff, and do a dynamic event, right? What about the sunspear part of the Griffon collection?

I did all of HoT in Magi stats with my Druid but I did have a Reaper in Carrions with me which help offset it.

Solo though, it'd take a lot longer, especially certain missions like the final HoT mission.

I wish they would introduce gear slots similar to the shared inventory slots. Can only put gear in them or something. Would make it easier to have at least two gearsets or something without taking up your normal inventory space.

It wasn't too much of an issue until recently since I now have my Magi Druid set and my Carrion Soulbeast set. (Before now, I just stuck with one gearset with maybe multiple weapons ie Weaver with Sword/Dagger and Staff depending on what I feel like using)

I put an invisible bag on each of my characters for gear and keys and stuff, but yea it does take up your "normal inventory space". I did max out bag slots on my main though to make sure I have plenty of room.

Eventually I'll have 32-slots for her too, lol. Price of a legendary to set that up though. Getting there!

Those are so expensive >_< hopefully the price goes down eventually... maybe by next expac

edit: An invis bag might be a good idea though. Might get each of my characters one. I've just been so used to having the Goss 20 slot bags up until now lol.

Lol, sorry, I kinda conflated a few ideas. I suggested invisible bags and then went on to talk about how I eventually want 32-slotters for inventory space.

You can get something like 18 slot invisible bags for a couple gold. And then I slot them at the bottom of my inventory screen. 20 slots if you wanna splurge.

Yeah I know ^^ I was just saying, I had considered either Invis or Equip bags but Invis means they shouldn't show up in the sell list. (I've almost sold (and once sold) some stuff I didn't want to >.>)

I also need my 20 slot bags. After having the max limit (all 20 slot bags), it's hard to go back below that on a character I regularly use lol.

I just wish the 32 slot bags weren't so expensive and that's mainly due to the RNG on getting those runes you need for them I think. So they sell for a lot.

Been playing through HoT while catching up and just got to the second area. Is it worth me going to the PoF area to get the first mount to help out in HoT?

If you don't care about story continuity, yes. All mounts help out in HoT but even just having a Raptor is enough of a boon to get you through HoT quickly I think.

Crystal Oasis done. That's 2 out of 5.

Looking at Elon Riverlands, seems like it has fewer egg hunts and more events, ugh.

One of them is a separate item hunt you can do solo! Two events, one that is pretty easy with a duo, maybe even soloable for some. The other actually requires a group since it's an NPC escort and if the guy dies it fails. Look for any mention of Warden Jabari, The Deadhouse or The Sepulcher POI in map chat. They will be called out pretty frequently I bet :)

Got the Griffon collection done and also gained access to the Funerary weapons. I ended up having around 90 elegy currency with the help of a couple really lucky rng lol. Checked out the sword and shield for now.

So.. I'm now at 17 days with no response to being locked out of my account. No responses from my ticket, twitter, or facebook. How the hell is this shit acceptable? I dont know what else to do, and want to keep playing, but fuck this is so aggravating.

Edit: Update, they unlocked me! They must have read this lol. Sorry for the rant folks!

Can anyone say what the worst elite specializations of this expansion are? Still having a tough time deciding and I hear a lot of rants about the Mirage being very clunky and in a bad place right now

Thanks :)

If new halloween content is "hey here's a new boss enemy in the labyrinth that you can 1 at" then I don't know maybe I'll do something else.

I mean, I don't expect seasonal stuff to have significant new content every year. Even if it's just a few skins or a minievent of sorts I'm cool with that.

Weaver actually makes elementalist kind of fun to play. About time I bring that character out of retirement.

Also, that feel when you finally identify an exotic out of one of those rare unidentified weapons things, only for it to be one of the few weapons that no collection calls for.

Creating a new character: 5 minutes

Trying to come up with an available name: 45 minutes

Anyways, I'm gonna give the necromancer a shot. With all my characters being power based, I think it's time to go condi with this one.

I really like Staff Weaver. It's basically "You know how the three skill is always the least useful thing on staff? Now it hits like a truck."

That's going to depend on what you're doing. Just from my perspective:
Scourge: You really feel like a cultist, corrupting large swaths of land and everything in it. Absurdly powerful in PvP.
Weaver: Sword feels weak and is confirmed to be getting updated in the future. But Power Staff weaver feels excellent. I just love Staff Ele though. Staff tempest was one of my favorite builds during the HoT era and this is basically the sequel to that.
Firebrand: Great damage and solid support. It's a bit clunky to use the F2 and F3 skills compared to core guardian and Dragonhunter as you basically have to stop what you're doing for an extended period of time to cast the charges, whereas Dragon Hunter can just pop it's big shield and keep dpsing at the same time. But when you're setting things on fire it's pretty fantastic.
Spelbreaker: Like HoT's Scapper, Spellbreaker is basically a pure sPvP spec and oh boy does it do it well. It is absurdly overpowered in PvP. Straight up god tier along side Scourge, and imo more overpowered than Scourge. That said, in any sort of group pve play it is extremely lackluster. It works great for open world and soloing and Magebane Teather+Phalanx Strength can pulse out ridiculous levels of might. But by and large, the PvE side of the game just does not reward the Spellbreaker's mix of mediocre damage and absurdly high sustainability. You can solo champs like a champ though. I'm curious to see if some of the more difficult fractals can be solo'd with it. If we were just going by how fun they are in PvE this would be bottom of the list.
Holosmith: From the Demo I thought this would be my favorite. It ended up being just alright. Sword feels off and undertuned. Laser Disk and Hyper Light Beam.
Mirage: Mirage was damn near unplayable in the demo but buffs and tweaks have really improved it. It has some problems, it's damage is still undertuned for PvE, Mirage Cloak feels akward as it makes evading away from your target a huge pain. Deception skills are all reeeaally boring and weak in PvE. But ultimately axe feels good. It's very straightforward to play. Thematically I like everything about it. It's just in execution I find it underwhelming.
Renegade: It's a direct upgrade to condi rev and quite good. Shortbow feels weak as a weapon but Mace/Axe feels good. I've never liked revenants in general though.
Deadeye: I didn't like Deadeye as much as I thought I would. I love the idea of a sniper. But in PvE it feels like you're just waiting for Malice to hit max so you can use Death's Judgement to see some ridiculous crits. It's a lot of waiting and feels very passive. Like how Scapper and Spellbreaker feel built for Spvp, Deadeye feels built for WvW. Playing it in the demo it felt amazing and trollish when you could just mark a guy, and eventually one shot them from stealth.

I have not tried Soulbeast. At all.

Firebrand or DH for someone who likes to PvE, map completion, achievement hunt, etc?

I like DH far better for open world stuff.

Edit: The leap is nice for clearing conditions and movement, traps are great for mobs that you Line of Sight or pull with your greatsword or tether, you have good cc options. Firebrand's second and third tomes and your mantras are far less useful if you aren't playing in a large group to benefit from the buffs you're putting out. I'm not saying Firebrand can't work but I just think DH is more well rounded for solo play.

Interesting. I should have mentioned that I do primarily play solo.

Sounds like i should try DH first. I've heard good things.

I play Firebrand for solo play and can pretty much steamroll through enemies. However you really lack range because you're stuck with scepter.

Holosmith is crap today because of the nerf.

Dragonhunter works best with Berserker's stat gear which is far easier to get than Vipers so it's best to start out with that. Plus Dragonhunter is more forgiving as there is more immediacy to your "OH SHIT" buttons on F2 and F3. Both are good though and Firebrand can pulse out insane levels of burning when properly geared. DH is no slouch and can even out dps Firebrand in the right situation and can pump out some truly insane burst damage with Procession of Blades trap+Weapon Skills.

Dragonhunters are also the best class for sub level 80 dungeons.

DH got a lot of flack thrown it's way when HoT came out because the name was super corny but everything else about the elite spec was cool and well designed.

DPS wise, you'd want to use FB. After its inevitably nerfed, I'd shift back to DH. DH is just a better spec with alot more oomph but also just better functionality imo from the Traps vs. Mantras.

I'm still on team DH damnit (for solo open world)

#teamDH

DH is better for open-world even now because traps will blow shit up far faster. In open-world this is usually best since most of the time you can bop normal-to-vet enemies in a matter of seconds with a good use of PoB/GS/Sword.

It just has worse sustained DPS due to how broken F1/haste sustain is right now.

That said, I think Mace+FB might be a fun way to abuse the ability to stack/proc Aegis.

I don't think FB is that broken in raids/fractals after the last change. They don't offer much in the way of CC, have average to poor self sustain (which may or may not matter depending on your groups support core) and a lot of their supporty stuff only comes at the expense of eating into your dps rotation.

After getting into the rhythm of FB, I can't play anything else. It feels just so satisfying.

Dragonhunter has great utilities, I'd argue the best the Guardian has.

Some day I will live out my dream of playing a guardian, wielding a Foefire's Essence, summoning a Sword of Justice to make a sentient Foefire's Essence that attacks on it's own and using Procession of Blades to summon three more Foefire's Essence to blender enemies.

I'm at Gold 1 right now in pvp. Is that considered good?

What's the highest rank?

Rank 1 is the highest rank. But the divisions go Legendary > Platinum > Gold > Silver > Bronze.

On that note the dungeon you visit as a penultimate part of the quest is annoying - the bosses have dumb aggro range with mismatched abilities (yeah, because low aggro range with "phase shift" ability in a small hallway is such a good idea). I farmed 10 keys on 4 bosses. -_-

I guess you soloed the last part? I went in, killed two and decided it would be way less annoying to duo it. :p

well it's not the last part, the last part is a piss easy "champion", you mean the penultimate "dungeon"

yeah I solo'd it :p

honestly four of the bosses are easy because they're on relatively forgiving ground (although the two Shade elites are finnicky in that if you just so much as move down a step from the hallway, they auto un-aggro), basically the aatxe with fire fields, the fleshreaver with "traps", and the two shades. I said nope to imps (one because it's painstakingly painful with its poison pools, the other is because you fight in a really narrow corridor and has a dumb phase shift mechanic so you end up un-aggroing it), the fleshreaver with heal, the two guards, and the other aatxe (the one where you jump because you get frozen... in a really narrow hallway).
