Haha, I did something similar a few days ago. I saw some guy jump through an opening, threw a grenade and then tried to kill him on the other side only for my own grenade to finally come down and kill me instead. Was one of those community breakout maps and I didn't really know the layout well.

Are you sure? Because hitting them directly is one hit kill, and right near them is either a kill if they're weak, or splash damage that takes off their shields.
