Halo |OT3| Remember Reach?

After listening to the podcast this game is shaping up to be really fun to play. That being said the decisions there making don't sound very good for competitive players. Sounds like there trying to decrease the skill gap.

I asked Frankie, and he avoided. Obviously, that means expect the same ol' shit for co-op modes

prove me wrong, 343. Hate to have such a great-sounding feature spoiled by more insane button lag
I mean it makes sense given how foundational stuff like that must be in the engine, but we can dream. It's disappointing, though, since it makes any and all transatlantic co-op games unpleasant or even untenable.

We gun' need a spreadsheet.

The absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence.

That said, they haven't said no to a demo.

Keep believing!

edit: I wanna hear the Sniper Rifle now, "thundercrack from Mt. Olympus"

Assault Carbine is a power weapon!

So the weapon spawns and Forerunner Vision are just there to make the skill-gap smaller? Good to know.

They didn't even have the decency to deny it

The whole rock paper scissors thing is what made Halo Reach awful. Kinda worrying to see they're trying to go for the same thing again.

=\

I cringed when they said rock, paper, scissors. Pretty appalling to hear that from AAA game designers.

Can't wait to hear that sniper rifle; the CEA snipe sounds earth shattering, I know 343 will not disappoint with the weapon audio.

Sprint changes are good, exactly what I and others suggested as the natural solution to the problem of fleeing battles.

What I don't see a natural solution to is Active Camo as an AA and loadout again. Camo in the first three games functioned properly because it was something only available to one player, every three minutes. Obviously it can't function as it should if it's available to every player all the time at the click of a button so we got the Reach rendition which

1) Forced the player to crouch walk or remain still in order to 'balance' it which in turn brought gameplay to a snail-like pace for the user and the adversary trying to find them.

2) Scrambled the radar of everyone in the vicinity, which ruined an integral part of the HUD since Halo's beggining and was a hamfisted, drunken punch of an attempt to balance the need to inform eveyone that a camo user was in the area.

Instant respawns in Slayer means no more Steitzer EXTERMINATION. What a crying shame.

Also, will anyone use anything other than BR/DMR loadout?

Spartan Ops is sounding like the absolute shit. I CANNOT WAIT TO PLAY IT. I do have a few questions though... when they say "CG" I wonder if that means "pre-rendered". While overall I have no issue with that, does that mean we won't be seeing our fully-customized Spartan-IV in the cutscenes?

Curious to see how that all works out...

(why am I down here?)

Agreed, spartan op sounds amazing, I do wonder about the variety and how long the missions will last though.

I'm thinking anywhere between 10-20 mins is the sweet spot.

So, how's this perks stuff gonna work. Are we going to be allowed to buy everything available and switch it up pre-game? Or pre-spawn? I vaguely remember someone talking about building custom load outs and selecting those on spawn, but I can't remember if that was just speculation or not.

Very good.

Not sure how i like having to unlock BR spawn... but this is not a problem IF the default starting weapons are AR/Pistol and the Pistol is actually useful, good weapon, comparable to BR and DMR. Not the shit it was in Halo 3 and Reach (sidearm/back up weapon).
Not an issue either if AR is a good weapon this time, wouldn't mind finally having an AR that works as main weapon instead of CQB specialist.

With all the explanations of how a lot of things are working, I'm really excited for how this is going to turn out. As long as everything is balanced as 343 is saying, I think it will be great. Also, spartan ops sounds fantastic. A co-op mode that required team work and strategy is what I really wanted from reach firefight and it sounds like spartan ops could fill that nicely. I'm curious as to how the slow down so somebody can't sprint and double melee works such as stopping them from sprinting and moving at base speed or slowing down their sprint so they move faster than base. Also curious if it slows them down as they run away.

Very disappointed with the info from the podcast.

- They mention that Armor Lock is gone but not Evade. Even the mention of the AAs not being as they were in Reach is not reassuring to me. I don't want to see Evade in the game in ANY form. It was removed from Reach. Why the hell would you put it in there again?

- H3 for movement benchmarks? Really?

- Why a ROF cap on the DMR if the BR and AR are more effective at close range? What are the odds of the DMR being effective at all if everyone has sprint and you have a ROF cap? Not to mention that you'll have to be on a BTB map for it to be really be effective.

- The AR is a beast... Why? Why do I get the sense that this AR will be effective like the one in Reach where it's good for all ranges except the longest? Why does a weapon with such spread need to be a "beast" when it requires less skill to use?

- Maps can support any gametype but are tailored for specific gametypes? How is this a point worth mentioning?

- Weapons dropping from space and killing you... ::face palm:: Wow, just what peolple were asking for. As if fusion cores and turrets weren't bad enough...

Only problem I have with the new info is still the unlock system. Yeah, I know I've complained about this before, but it still sucks. "BR taking effort to unlock"? Fuck that shit, I shouldn't have to unlock weapons or perks or anything. Everything else sounds good though.

The co-op lag is appaling playing with someone a few hundred miles away. Many lulz will be had if they can't improve the network experience, basically makes SOps pointless to me if that's the case.

Because the BR and DMR are the most popular weapons as per the Bnet infographic that Bungie released following their stat shutdown.

It's only natural that the AR be the definitive starting weapon because more people use it than any other weapon.

Wait...

Hell I've had issues playing with a buddy 50 miles away. That had to have been a big priority for 343...I hope.

I'm with you guys on the co-op lag. I'm sure FyreWulf has a big post explaining all the mumbo-jumbo that goes into it, but whatever it is, it stinks. Insane button input lag just playing with a friend who lives in the same city, I can't remember the last AAA game that happen in. Spartan-Ops sounds amazing, but with the way the netcode for co-op is in Reach...it might not even matter.

Wait people actually DON'T want the AR to be useful? Thing blows in Reach and I was very excited to hear it will actually be worth using now. Every weapon in the sandbox should have its use, and the AR doesn't currently.

..

I think they mean its beast more at close range. I think its imperative the main weapons AR.BR.DMR.Pistols are very balanced because now we actually do get to choose our starting weapons.

Starting weapon was such an issue in H2/3/Reach because of the imbalance of power that we NEEDED to start with them to balance the weapon control issue. A good team with all BR's basically had already won in a slayer game. Weapon control was too pertinent in this way in H2/H3/and still in Reach even with Loadouts.

Now map control will be more pertinent than weapon control in a way. Its just a shift of focus

Don't go there. Just don't. You like AR, keep that to yourself. You want it to be useful, keep that to yourself. I've opened this particular can of worms before...

The AR destroys in Reach. You don't even have to be aiming at the person to get it to hit.

Can't wait to be mowed down by an AR as my BR is spreading and recoiling all over the place.

I assume non power weapons such as the BR will still be placed on maps and available for players to pick up even if they haven’t unlocked them as a starting weapon?

Will players be able to remove sprint in custom games?

Where's your awesome avatar from? Is it from a bigger piece of concept art, or did you make it yourself?

The AR is already too powerful for its ease of use. Making it more powerful makes no sense. If anything it should be weaker.

For a seasoned player I assume the new BR will be as powerful as ever, and soon be by far the most used weapon in Halo again. Just nice the AR will have a chance against it unlike Halo 3.

Regarding having to unlock the BR: remember that there will almost definitely be BRs and DMRs available to pick up, too. I actually wouldn't be too surprised if buying the ability to spawn with a BR or DMR cost a lot of Spartan Points (CHANGE THE POINTS NAME, UGH). And I bet the DMR and BR will cost the same amount of points and will be unlocked in the same tier, forcing us to choose which one to buy first.

Good point. I've been dabbling with Firefight Doubles lately, and I just can't do it. I quit out of half my games. Sticking to Score Attack, I guess.

I don't want players to be rewarded for choosing a bullet hose weapon.

Reach version definetly should be more powerful (with less range and accuracy). Useless piece of shit at the moment. It's a CQB weapon, it should dominate there.
Utility weapons should of course have a chance (good chance at least if you're good) against it, of course. Weapons meant for specific roles should be good at those. Utility weapons are supposed to be jacks of all trades but not masters of all (like people here insist they should be).
And now i'll stop looking at this can of worms i seem to have opened once again.

What? lol the AR is so good in Halo 3. Go watch some play of it, it eats through shields so fast. You can practically jump out spray them and melee for a kill almost as well as a shotgun blast melee. I see it being used in high level 50 doubles/slayer all the time on JTV.

If anything its exactly where it should be balance-wise in Reach. IMO. Not too weak not too strong but if used correctly can get kills.

Downloading podcast now from the hotel. At this rate I might even get to listen to it later tonight! Excite.

I'm still not a fan of the ab section of the armor, but otherwise I've really warmed up to this iteraion of the Chief. It's unmistakably him, and looks great.

I'm okay with today's news. I dislike Sprint and think its unnecessary but if the maps are being made with it in mind then I might not have a problem with its implementation. I just hope all the armor abilities are nerfed to hell and back.

Knowing where weapons spawn and the timing on which they spawn isn't really a skill, just nerd knowledge. I prefer a straight fight to all this sneaking around.

A player's application of knowledge is a part of their skillset.

- H3 for movement benchmarks? Really?

Most disappointing thing I heard in the podcast (not finished yet though).

One of initial things that I was excited about when they initially revealed MP was the apparent focus on significantly speeding up the game. H3 is so slow!

Really... people here are pessimistic. Halo 3 is fast (well, a bit) compared to Halo Reach so i'd say it is a good improvement, especially if we also have higher jump. And with luck, better strafing.
With sprint, i don't think we need to be faster than Halo 3... though i wouldn't mind dropping sprint and having even higher base speed. But i'll take what we get.

I wonder if we will get a trailer/gameplay and or boxart tonight?

I know what you mean about the ab section, but my main issue would be the shoulder pads, otherwise I love it.

I hope we get a trailer/gameplay vid tonight. Or else we get to watch Conan derp around on the stage for 10 minutes, with as many "lulz nerds" jokes as he can get in.
edit: although any 343 interviews are welcome.
On a semi related note, the Sparkast definitely makes me feel better. I still have some reservations, but I am excited to see what's brought to the table in November.

Still cannot believe they're shipping against CoD. Seems like Microsoft shooting itself in the foot twice with that one

Huh, boxart could be possible. I wouldn't expect a trailer or any new footage, though.
I feel we are due for the boxart soon now that we have a release date, so its a possibility. Or at least a new temporary art. Also, I would be surprised if they didn't have some sort of exclusive footage tonight, whether a traditional trailer or not.
