I spent most of the episode worried that Ellie was going to show up in Victoria Secret. The Riley actor was excellent. The friendship between them was believable. The episode itself was OK. I never played the DLC so it's the first episode where I lacked any context.

Another dumbed down event that fails to capture the intensity and emotion of the game.

Deffo feels like they aren't letting us get attached to Joel enough before the inevitable day at palm springs. Odd choice buy hey ho.

I knew people jumped the gun way too early on Bella. Every single episode she's gotten better and better, which is funny because that's exactly how I felt about game Ellie, the character kept getting better and better right up until the final "Okay". Huh, it's almost like...intentional and that comparing the fully fleshed out Ellie to Bella's based on early episodes was fucking stupid.

No, I think this is how it will be structured:

Episode 7: Entire DLC arc, possibly with a quick section at the beginning or end showing how Ellie and Joel get to safety

Episode 8: Entire Winter arc. Probably ending with Ellie killing Dave and Joel escorting her to safety.

Episode 9: The entire hospital arc and ending.
2 episodes to tell 1/3rd of the games story. I don't feel we are close enough in Ellie and Joels relationship for that.

The game is 10+ hours of them idly bonding in between big story driven set pieces.... we havent had any of that in the show. I want to be wrong, I'm enjoying the show and think both the main cast are excellent but it hasnt connected as well as I think it should have done.

It wouldn't let e edit... but just to add, I wasn't' disagreeing with how you think the episodes are laid out. I think you are spot on

Good episode but massive complain is still the action scene.
And this make me wonder how much they will skip in David section. Only 1 episode.
Sighhh...
Too rushed. This should be 11,12 episodes at least.
Feel like even with 100 m+ budget HBO still not trusted this IP enough.
I'm not surprised if the last episode will be worse version than the game. This series is great but the game version is way better.

Episode was good, but yet again, the game was so much better

They could have cut all that initial segment with Ellie and FEDRA to add more time to Ellie finding stuff to cure Joel.

Showing that Joel was alive right from the get go with no tension building was plain stupid. Why? They did that in the game, it was great, so why not do the same here? Dumb.

Risking herself in a mall full of infected was not only a better setpiece, but showed how far Ellie would go to not loose Joel. That "I'm not letting you go, I'm not letting you go" after she gets the medkit to cure him was the most emotional part of the game for me after the ranch scene, and totally poignant to be shown while telling Riley's story.

Also, the final part of the DLC with multiple infected was much more exciting than the one infected wet fart that we got.

And the arcade working is total bullshit lol

Ellie listening to Riley's description of the game was much more magical.

At the end of the day, the game will be the definitive way to experience this story. By far.

Nice episode. Still, it's safe to say that the show can't catch the game high note

Left Behind in the game happens because Ellie needs to get medicine to Joel, and then she goes to a mall, having the memory of it. In the show just kinda happens - it's not a big deal, but the game did way better

I kept telling people that games can tell this kind of story better because of the gameplay. Its during gameplay where that connection between Ellie and Joel builds. None of that is there when it's a tv show or movie. They're doing a good job though. Enjoying the show but it was never gonna top the game

Good as usual, but kind of boring......also felt like I was watching the start of Uncharted 4........
I don't mind building story, etc, but 30+ minutes of the wandering the mall?

very slow episode that works for dlc but not for a story that is literally about to end. The game goes into override from the moment Joel gets impaled and doesn’t let up until the ending. Taking a detour, second one this season, is a bizarre pacing choice.

They should’ve kept this as a short flashback and introduced David in this episode. Give the best villain in the game Two episodes at least. Even Kansas Karen got two episodes.

It seems Joel is going to be out for another full episode or at least out for 95% of it. He just shows up to torture two guys at the end. That’s three episodes out of 9 where the lead character is not the focus or is barely in it.
Hunt: Joel isn't the lead character :)

Bizarre you'd think they should skip the backstory of how Ellie got bit. Its also canonically the same point in the story as the DLC takes place

I will say this. If they decide to release extended edits of the episodes, no matter how uneven in length they end up being, I'd be definitely up for it.

This episode was great, but sometimes, and in other episodes more often, there's a feeling that more scenes were filmed but then cut due to time constraints. I mean they probably did film alternate versions of the scenes too, or scenes that may be used later on, which is fine to hold back. But if there's more time to spend with these people interacting during these past events I'd love to see it.

Great episode again, but I am concerned how they are going to do justice to the rest of the story in two remaining episodes. I assume at least one of them will be near feature length.

Also, the arcade working was bloody silly. Game did it much better.

Winter is pretty concise in game. Its only an hour long including gameplay. Spring is even shorter, pat the giraffes, hit the hospital, kill Abby's dad and bounce to the ending

This episode didn't do it for me, after so much happening in the previous episode this was a weird change of pace.

Could have been 20 mins max for flashback, or we could have had snippets over the other episodes; this felt like it was trying too hard to let us know why she badly doesn't want to lose Joel at this very moment, rather than letting the viewer come to that realisation over time.

This (7) was one of my favourite episodes and I’m well and truly sold on Ellie now - Bella was brilliant in this episode, as was Storm. I thought the ending of the episode was perfect as well. Save a couple of minor missteps, I can’t believe how good this show has been so far.

The finale is 40 minutes long. I'm not joking.
Finale is very short in the game too. You meet the girafe then fight one set of bloaters then end up at the hospital where Joel quickly takes care of the fireflies. If i had to guess, they will probably do away with the zombies for the finale.

but Winter? that is a big 2 hour setpiece that will now be reduced to just an hour long episode. i dont know what they were thinking giving David just one episode.

Here I'll make the episode better.

The episode should've opened up with Ellie hunting in the woods, all by her lonesome. Joel is nowhere in sight. The audience wonders if he's dead or not. The episode occasionally cuts back and forth between the Left Behind flashback, and her in the present day. At one point she crosses paths with David. Cue them cutting a deal and waiting by the fire. Ellie stares into the fire and reminisces about Riley. More flashbacks. David's man returns with the antibiotics. About the 45 minute mark of the episode Ellie returns to the house, and the show reveals Joel is still alive. She administers the antibiotics. She falls asleep and dreams about Riley. The Left Behind side story is wrapped up. Ellie wakes up to the sound of men outside. She leads them away from the house and gets captured. Cliffhanger. End of episode.

All in all, 20 minutes dedicated to the present, 40 minutes to Left Behind. All of Left Behind and portions of the David plotline are moved forward in one episode, allowing you more time for the next episode to focus on David's group and Joel's rescue mission.

Joel is hispanic in the TV series, he was white in the game. Who cares?
I think the point is, when they take a white character and make them black, Hispanic, etc, everyone just shrugs and says, "that's fine, race doesn't matter. We don't even notice it". But, if they took a black or hispanic character and made them white there would be outrage.

It's the hypocrisy that bothers a lot of us.

Can you imagine if they kept everyone's race the same, but made Sam and Henry a couple white kids? It'd be a front page outrage story on CNN.

I’m more concerned about fitting stuff into episode 8 than I am episode 9, the final section of the game isn’t that long as people realize.

I still think they can fit episode 8 in an hour if you cut out the lengthy gameplay sections. But it’ll definitely be cutting it close, that’s for sure.

The reason this show is only 9 episodes, and stuff feels rushed, is because its Season 1 of a brand new series.

On a brand new show, you don't know if it's going to be successful. So Networks always order minimal amount of episodes for a shows first season. This is just how it works for cable.

Walking Dead Season 1 was 6 fucking episodes. Season 2 was 13. Then the rest were 16. We are lucky we got 9. That shows faith.

You have to earn more episodes. The fact that S2 was confirmed so early, means we are practically guaranteed 13+ for Season 2. Bet on it. The shows earned it.

Im just gonna post this again. Race swapping ain't new. People just have to get used to it. Tons of fictional characters have been turned from one race to another. From black to white. White to black. Brown to Yellow. Green to Orange.

You can fit anything into an hour. After all most movies are an hour and a half to two hours long. The problem is that you lose the impact and character development that gives tv shows that edge over movies which are always fighting against time. What they have done is essentially turned the show into mini 40-50 minute movies where a new character is introduced only to be killed off in the same episode. In the game it works because you end up spending at least 2-3 hours with everyone. The show almost has an anthology feel to it like the first season of Mandalorian.

David has maybe 4 cutscenes in the game so thats what? 15-20 minutes of screentime? Can be done. But in the game you spend a lot of time with him during gameplay, and even when hes not on screen you feel his presence. Winter from beginning to end is 2 hours. Condensing it to just a 40 minute episode is a weird choice especially when they had the bandwidth to start it in this episode while keeping Ellie's flashbacks with Riley.

Nah, HBO ordered 10 episodes like they do for all their shows. The just merged the first two episodes together because they didnt feel the first episode was strong enough to bring back viewers.

And of course they were going to be rushed when adopting a 15 hour game into a 10 hour season. But had they not wasted an hour on Bill and Frank's side story, an hour on Kansas Karen, and dedicated another FULL hour on Riley and Ellie's story which wasnt even in the main 15 hour campaign, they wouldve had plenty of time to adopt what was in the game AND expand upon it like a good show should.

51 minutes is pretty short for the winter arc. It is odd they chose to make that shorter than the DLC episode. I'm hoping they have good reason, it's not like they were mandated to make it short.

So cool of you to call Jesus a fictional character. Cool of you to know also what this fictional character's skin looked like 2000 years ago.
