Well that’s kind of weird. Why did they feel the need to do that? And have her wear a nose ring on top.

If she were black in the game and they casted a white person, wouldn’t that be considered racist?
Really this keeps you up at night? No it’s not racist, it happens all the time. She’s a side character. Does it matter? Does it effect her character in any way?

I'm just trying to understand the logic.

White character being portrayed by black person? No problem.
Black character being portrayed by a white person? Problem.

It just seems like it was forced and it comes across as pandering.

For someone who played the game, it's distracting and I'm surprised no one else is bothered by it.
Pandering is capitalism. Capitalism bothers you.

Woah, I never knew Maria was such a sunaddict, her tan is awesome!

Seriously, why change something like that? Oh I forgot, you‘re woke…

Another thing that bothers me, for the first 5 episodes there was literally no relationship forming between Joel & Ellie, and in ep6 we‘re supposed to believe that they have a deep connection with each other? That scene at the ranch in the game was the peak of their relationship in the game, it‘s kind of weird that they tried to pack some chemistry in one episode while ignoring this fundamental element in all the episodes before. Feels kind of rushed.

And all the other changes, they‘re just too much for me as a fan of the games.

I don't think it comes from a Place of not being bothered by it, so much as it's just not the hill most of us want to die on. The tone of your messages implies to me you probably weren't earning top fan badges when TLOU2 released, and taking in all of the supplemental drama from THAT release (leaks, DMCA takedowns, Abby, golfing, Levzbehonest, etc) I think the vast majority of "critics," like us realize that Druckman could have been a LOT more on the nose with agendas than making a throwaway white character a throwaway black character. Drop the pretenses, my dude, the one element determining your enjoyment or distaste for this show wasn't how they cast Maria, lmfao

It isnt hitting the same because you were already hit by it 10 years ago.

Characters are not the same and it shows, Ellie is more arrogant and less kind, Joel is less gruff and less useful all around, guess it makes sense to make him like that because not much it's going in general, in the game by the time they reach Tommy's place, Joel stomped every one on his path (human or not), compared to the TV series

Well, episode 6 starts with "THREE MONTHS LATER"
You think Joel and Ellie ingnored each other during that period of time?

edit:
And who cares that Maria is black? Sarah was also white in the game. Why are people so mad about these things? These are fictional characters and can be played by basically any race.

This episode will be Ellie taking care of Joel and meeting the canibals?
No, I think this is how it will be structured:

Episode 7: Entire DLC arc, possibly with a quick section at the beginning or end showing how Ellie and Joel get to safety

Episode 8: Entire Winter arc. Probably ending with Ellie killing Dave and Joel escorting her to safety.

Episode 9: The entire hospital arc and ending.

There were a few moments of bonding in the previous episodes and it's been 3 months since Henry died.

I haven’t seen ratings updates about later episodes…going down?

Well with the Super Bowl episode there was no comparable way to announce it to the previous episodes as it was Streaming only on Friday and Released on Sunday.

So the numbers wouldn't make any sense to compare versus the previous episodes.

will be interesting to see if/when/how they reveal joel isn't gonna die for people who don't know the story. could keep it til episode 8, or open with it like left behind the game does, or close the episode with that reveal

They don't have a "deep connection," they just care a lot about each other and 3-4 months is enough time for that to happen.

Episode 4 is really where things started to change between the two and it allowed Joel to open up and actually discuss things with Ellie (How Ellie killed someone for the first time).

At the beginning of Episode 6, we hear this.

Ellie: So I've been thinking. Let's say we find the Fireflies, it all works, they draw my blood and put it through some of their fancy machines and make a cure.
Joel: Okay?
Ellie: Then what? Like, what do we do?
Joel: It's "We"?
Ellie: Okay, Fine. Whatever. You

Ellie wanted to know what they were going to do. This is the first sign that Ellie was worried about being alone because she wanted. And of course, we know how the rest of the episode played out, but it's very believable that the two would have a bond together at this point.

I'm going to guess that they're going to reveal it at the beginning of episode 7.

But something keeps telling me they're going to wait until the end. I don't see them waiting until Episode 8.

if they use the cliffhanger traditionally then yeah it'll be revealed right away

but saving it til the end could be interesting

This movie had Gustavo's track 'The Choice' for the first time. My favorite of his.

Troy Baker is in episode 8 next week, as seen in the preview.

I thought it was a good episode, but the fight at the end looked really cheesy. Can't put my finger on it, it just looked really out of place compared to the rest of the episode. Like it was something out of a 90's low budget TV show.

That episode felt like terrible management of screen-time.

The Left Behind flashback DLC works in the video game because it's a humanizing flashback that hits well AFTER the events of the first game. But seeing this cutaway with less context in television? Was just boring and felt normal since the show is more void of action and tense moments like the game.

At the very least, like the game - they should have jumped between the flashback and present time more and progressed the present time further. First genuinely boring and off-putting episode of the series so far.

What was with the casting, I couldn't take Giant Riley next to Ellie seriously either.

Really? I thought it was the best part of an already incredible episode. It was so tense, even after me finishing the game over 10 times

Their story needs to be told before Season 2, so this was the perfect time to tell it.

Instead of Ellie looking for antibiotics throughout the episode, they used the time to make people believe Ellie was going to leave Joel behind.

very slow episode that works for dlc but not for a story that is literally about to end. The game goes into override from the moment Joel gets impaled and doesn’t let up until the ending. Taking a detour, second one this season, is a bizarre pacing choice.

They should’ve kept this as a short flashback and introduced David in this episode. Give the best villain in the game Two episodes at least. Even Kansas Karen got two episodes.

It seems Joel is going to be out for another full episode or at least out for 95% of it. He just shows up to torture two guys at the end. That’s three episodes out of 9 where the lead character is not the focus or is barely in it.
