Welp there it is.
I knew something was off the moment questions about an Xbox version started floating around. Actually, that was after Phil Spencer went crying in an interview about the game not being on his dying console, because they can't take the consequences of real competition. And of course, modern SIE are for some mysterious reason so beholden to enable a self-defeatist Xbox, that they capitulate and bring one of their biggest games over anyway because....is it blackmail? Or because "line must go up" with shareholders and investors? Which one is it this time?
I'd say keep an eye on Astro Bot getting a Steam announcement soon; why else would interviewers have fielded the question to a member of the dev team shortly after the PS5 release? Probably because it's already been planned out. People want to go on about how it'd be impossible to port the game to anything other than PlayStation, but I don't think the suits at SIE care about that complicating things. They'll find a way, I'm just waiting to see if the port's announced at Gamescon or TGS, and if there's a Switch 2 version announced too. I mean they still insist PC and Switch aren't competition to them.
But that's weird, because so many people keep telling me Xbox is seen as a direct competitor to SIE. So, why would SIE port their biggest GAAS hit to their direct competitor? Oh it's because that whole talk about viewing Xbox as a competitor is bullcrap, just marketing jargon and a narrative some fans have come up with online to argue against this
exact thing happening.
And again, here's my biggest peeve with SIE on this and something I'll at least give Microsoft credit for: they treat the whole idea of multiplatform as some "will they, won't they" teen romance show, when I say just be upfront and let me as a customer know where I can expect that game from Day 1. That way, I as a customer can make the best informed decision for my wallet. Don't trick me into thinking the game's going to be exclusive and then 6-12 months later say "
Got'cha bitch!". Don't try seducing me with FOMO by pretending the game's going to be exclusive for the long haul, when you're bringing it to PC a year later.
Supporting games is one thing but I think being well-informed as a customer is just as important. Ironically, SIE are being the worst at this. Microsoft's clear cut: I know everything is very likely going to be Day 1 on an Xbox, PlayStation, or PC, so as a customer it's easy to decide where I'm going to get that game. They even announced the PS5 port of Indiana Jones before the Xbox one was even released, I'm sure that saved a lot of Xbox + PS owners from feeling a need to buy it on Xbox due to uncertainty over the PS5 version existing or when it'd release. SIE feel like they want to have their cake and eat it too; they want to pretend to be like Nintendo when it comes to exclusivity, but also want to chase other market as eagerly (or increasingly eagerly) as Microsoft.
What they're going to have to realize, is you can't have it both ways. Pick a lane. Pick one or the other. And just owe up to it. I already know DS2 is going to Steam in six months, because that's what the first game did. And I think others know this too, which might explain why DS2's sales (at least physical) are underperforming compared to the first: a lot of people are just waiting for the PC version. SIE are training customers to expect this more and more, so what we're seeing happen with DS2, could end up happening with Ghosts of Yotei, and with Intergalatic. That they're putting other games like Marvel Tokon Day 1 on PC also contributes to that.
Now, going forward people will have even more reason to think Marvel Tokon gets an Xbox port. Or that it deserves an Xbox version. I'm sure Phil Spencer will go crying on another podcast about how Marvel Tokon not being on Xbox is unfair and "
doesn't help anyone"; then we'll go through the whole song & dance again and end up with SIE announcing the Xbox version through Bandai Namco publishing it there six months after the PS5 & PC versions launch. Why should I, as someone who can see clear patterns, expect anything else? Why should anyone expect anything else?
Yeah I'll admit this is a ramble, but I'm also just tired of the bait-and-switch. Don't spend all this time arguing against the idea of HD2 not going to Xbox, just to then sneak out an announcement the day after Microsoft basically starts chopping Xbox into pieces. Because now why should I not expect other GAAS to get ported? Why should I not expect Astro Bot to get ported to PC and Switch 2? Some people at SIE spent too much time saying words that turn out to not mean anything, and it's been getting increasingly frustrating.
I just hope none of that gets in the way of Mark Cerny working some magic with the PS6, but we'll see. After all, he can only do what his bosses allow him to do :/
Think I'm gonna dip out from talking about this any further for a bit. Just hope more people see the patterns here, and the larger ramifications. Take that all into account and see where I'm coming from on this
