Hillary Clinton Thanks Ronald Reagan for AIDS Actions

At this point we should just stop pretending that Hillary isn't actually a Republican.

The choices this election cycle are Hillary (R), Trump (I), and Bernie (D).

Yeah, I don't consider Trump a Republican. He's just using that party for his own devices because it's a two-party system.

You should check her voting record before saying some shit like that. Here's a hint: It aligns with Sanders over 90% of the time.

What'd they do to Hudson?

He wanted some treatment in France not available in America French hospital was military or something so head said no cause not French he made a request to nancy (reagans knew him well) to speak to the french . she refused saying white house shouldn't pick friends for special treatment . eventually some French minister got him in a couple days later but his illess was too far gone and he died a year later .

Ppl dont like it cause Reagan's had a history of helping friends with fundraisers etc and it is seen as more of a distancing themselves from what was conisidered a homosexuals disease / problem at the time .

The the gist of it

Wtf is this bullshit? She pushed for LGBT rights as SOS

That was Obama, generally, but she did do some things for lgbt individuals while in the position, yes. And ive already covered my issues regarding her lack of acknowledgement on trans individuals existing numerous times. Id post the link I typically do but am on mobile. She thought lgbt was purely about sexuality alone as late as late last year. In comparsion Obama acknowlged trans existence and issues during the 2008 debates, Hillary did not. Im in the spectrum and don't trust her on lgbt issues because she couldn't even acknowledge the T in a letter about lgbt nor my own existence til very very recently, sorry. So im not surprised a gaffe like this would happen.

I'm a Clinton supporter, and this is rough. Nancy Reagan died. You don't have to suck her husband's balls. He was an asshole. Fuck.

And this is how the thread goes from discussing a fairly horrendous mistake on Clinton's part to arguing bullshit like your factually inaccurate and extremely dishonest characterization of her political history.

Maybe he means in a more worldly sense? If Democrats are supposed to be the left-of center, then Hillary is like a less incompetent Stephen Harper to me. Trump, is well.... something else.

I legitimately don't even know where to begin with this. Like, how is this a thing you can actually think?

It's not like Hillary's gaffe on Reagan's record is a specific policy stance, its just a gaffe.

Lol Clinton is not remotely Harper like.

I mean why respond to a comment criticizing hyperbole with more hyperbole.

How many "mistakes" does Hillary get to make until we stop pretending they aren't actually mistakes and are how she felt at the time until someone told her she should flip on the issue to get more votes?

She supported the War in Iraq until it was a "mistake".

She supported TPP until it was a "mistake".

She opposed gay marriage until it was a "mistake".

Now this thing with Reagan and AIDS, what the hell. How is this even defensible as a "mistake"? Does anyone actually believe Hillary doesn't know what she is saying at all times? We're not talking about Trump here, right?

Her list of "mistakes" is getting awfully long at this point. Let's see how many more happen between now and November. Someone is going to call her out on her record in Libya and Syria, will those become "mistakes" too in a few months?

To be fair, Hillary will only continue (as did Obama as well, sadly) the trickle-down nonsense that has become a quintessential part of the United States of America. Reagan's legacy lives on through this system that disenfranchises the lower and middle classes, a system that Hillary has no intentions of stopping.

Of course, but she supports LGBT rights now and pushed for them globally. To hold her to a different standard than Obama or other Democrats who didn't support LGBT rights initially seems sexist tbh.

I'm not holding her to a special standard nor am i being sexist. Please read where my concern comes from. I will still vote for her if she gets the nom but i have my reasons for not trusting her as much.

Utter stupidity here

Oops hit the wrong button

Hillary is not a Republican in today's sense of the word. Hell neither is Trump he's much worse.

I often think Hillary Clinton has a loose affiliation with the truth. That doesn't make her a Republican. If you think Clinton is a Republican, then you don't understand the term, the history, or the political landscape in general.

One can express one's dislike of a candidate without flying so far off into hyperbole that one winds up looking foolish.

Hillary Clinton is to the left of Barack Obama, Joe Biden and the vast majority of the Democrat Party on the national stage. Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders are two of the few notably prominent politicians who are to her left, and Clinton's voting record and political history aligns fairly identically with them both. She is not a Republican in any shape or form, and anyone who attempts to argue otherwise is either deeply misinformed or extremely dishonest.

It makes her gaffe even more perplexing. It was a stupid, unnecessarily controversial thing to say.

Both her and Obama deserve some criticism.

Maybe in the back of her mind she was trying to come up with a way to offer a counter-point to what she'd just talked about. Like "they did a lot of good; on the other hand it's important to remember what they didn't get right.." and then chickened out or got mixed up. It's just impossible for me to make sense of it. I find it hard to believe she's that out of touch.

She was memorializing Nancy Reagan. There is no "on the other hand..." under the circumstances.

She just shouldn't have gone there. It is completely bewildering (still) that she did.

You don't really understand what the Democratic party is, do you? It's a coalition of liberals, moderates, progressives, and even some conservatives. You're a Democrat by association, not by any one position.

is Obama a Democrat?

You tell me. He permanently enshrined the Bush tax cuts into law. He bailed out Wall Street. He was President during the largest expansion of wealth inequality in this country since the Great Depression. Oh and he is joining with mainstream Republicans to sign the TPP this year. When it comes to economic policy, Obama was no Democrat I ever heard of.

People do it all the time. Especially with divisive figures. Her statement on Scalia:

“My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Justice Scalia as they mourn his sudden passing,” she said. “I did not hold Justice Scalia’s views, but he was a dedicated public servant who brought energy and passion to the bench.”

She had just gotten done talking a lot about the Reagans' work with alzheimer's and other things. She could have just stopped, but she had another point she wanted to make...

Yeah, it's definitely a stupid mistake of her own making, I can just see why she might have made it. Who knows what was really going through her head.

There was a good tweet storm but the LGBT community didn't have the same kind of presence in the political consciousness as it does now with so many people coming out and social media.

Clinton likely remembers it this way because its how most people, who weren't dying and suffering, experienced it. People like ACT UP and other activist groups did a lot of good work changing this (and I'm sure Hillary remembers them heckling her husband) but its also hard to go back and re-remember how you actually remembered things as you experienced them.

Its very easy to pretend everybody saw everything the same at the time. Its not accurate. That doesn't excuse the quotes but it puts them into context, and makes clinton's comments one of misunderstanding and ignorance and not malice like many seem to feel they are.

Name three issues Clinton is more liberal than Obama on.

Is this one of those things where as you are actually speaking it outloud you realize midsentence that what you are saying is complete bullshit but you can't stop for risk of looking like a fool? I couldn't see the awareness on her face or eyes so I guess not.

I feel bad for the Aide :(

Expressing disagreement is not the same as calling out specific failings of the recently deceased person or those associated with them.

Huh? The clintons are to the right of Obama slightly imo.

Hillary Clinton's voting record in the senate was to the left of Obama's

http://www.vox.com/2015/6/15/8779449/hillary-clinton-populist-record

In 2008, both Clinton and Obama spent a lot of time debating a single fateful vote she cast in 2002 in favor of George W. Bush's invasion of Iraq. But if you look at all the votes that were cast during the four years they served together in the Senate, it was Clinton who amassed the more liberal record.

In the 109th Senate, Obama was the 17th most liberal member (between Chuck Schumer and Tom Harkin), while Clinton was the 13th most liberal member.

In the 110th Senate, Obama was the 18th most liberal member (again one tick to the left of Schumer) while Clinton was again 13th most liberal.

Another way of looking at it is that of the two Democratic senators from New York, Clinton was the more liberal. Of the two Democratic senators from Illinois, Obama was the more conservative.
Of course, one could say that these kind of crude vote-agglomeration methods miss a lot of what matters. A single vote on Iraq was more consequential than dozens of votes on budget amendments. But this is the point. Clinton's reputation as a centrist Democrat comes largely from her foreign policy. On the economic issues that dominate congressional votes by volume, she's liberal.

Is he a moderate centrist corporatist? That argument can definitely be made.

Since when was being protectionist "liberal"? Just because Bernie says so?

Hmm can't argue with that. But what she says alot of the time seems to the right of Obama, eg praising fucking reagan.

Considering Obama beat Hillary running as a centrist unifier, I can't really say I agree.

well, sounds like the problem isn't Hillary or Obama, but rather your understanding of the Democratic party. that doesn't make Hillary a Republican, it makes her.... you guessed it! a Democrat.

While I don't hate Hillary and think she'll be an ok president, I fear that what she says now about LGBT stuff is a facade, Especially trans stuff. As soon as she is president, you can bet that T will be thrown under the bus because it's still politically advantageous to do so, and Hillary is the quintessential politician.

Bernie has openly supported trans people since the 80s when even hardcore liberals wouldn't touch them with a 10 foot pole.

Why is this so bad?
Because it's a complete rewrite of history. Reagan gave zero fucks about aids infact he cut funding for aids research. Drugs that could help were held in fda limbo while people died.

They actively harmed not helped aids patients because it was the "gay plague".

Well, vox is also incredibly biased towards Hillary (they purposefully misreported Bernies tax plan, for example and produced a graph with these lies to make Hillary look favorable) so id take anything from that site with a grain of salt.

" Clinton's reputation as a centrist Democrat comes largely from her foreign policy. On the economic issues that dominate congressional votes by volume, she's liberal."

Basically admits the scoring algorithm is biased in terms of making Hillary more liberal than Obama because more of the votes came from economics where Hillary is slightly more liberal. They're both pretty centrist on economic issues and Hillary is far more hawkish in foreign policy and was slower to adopt the same social views.
