Even though it looked like it was clearly a mistake.... how the fuck did that get past so many people. It's like saying LBJ had a good plan for Vietnam.

There's a lot of "least she apologized" remarks going around to this like she should be applauded for acknowledging that she said something categorically wrong. She didn't misspeak, she flat out rewrote fucking history. Of course she apologized for making up bullshit that the Reagans aren't responsible for ignoring hundreds of thousands of Americans.

Don't make a mountain out of a mole hill though folks.

The problem is, you'd think any speech she gives was reviewed by her. But nope, that's not how assembly line politicians do things.

It was an interview.

I'd assume any speech she gives has people reviewing it, nobody caught this?

Igoring the fact that it was an interview, no, politicians do not review all the speeches they get during a campaign, "assembly line" or not. They are constantly speaking, interviewing and traveling, with barely enough time to sleep, let alone do much else. I feel like you just wanted a chance to get mad at an "establishment" canidate.

So is everyone losing their minds over this?

Personally I was alive during all of this and it was pathetic how the Reagan Administration dealt with the AIDS crisis.

Hillary is even older than me. There is zero excuse for this mistake. She's apoligized and that's fine but this was an easy one to avoid.

Interviews and speeches don't even work that different - its mostly just a bullet point list of shit to say. Would not be surprised if she has a (canned) apology and reasoning for it the next time it comes up, debate or whatever.

remember me
I bet you she doesn't. The alternatives are people who actively campaign on overturning Obergefell.

Much like the vast majority of voters, most interest groups are pragmatists. Slamming Clinton doesn't help you in the long run. It gets taken care of privately.
For the general sure, but it's bad during a primary where she's constantly being attacked for not being liberal enough.

So where does that leave us with this? Just asking in general now but should this be a reason for people to not vote for her in the next primary or upcoming primaries considering all actions took today?

How have LBGT outlets and prominent activist responded to this? Are they ready to tar and feather her? Expressing disappointment? Acknowledging the apology? Saying it isn't enough? Calling for people to vote for Sanders instead?

Exactly where are we with this situation where it's most raw? Or are people staying calm about this and using it as a chance to talk, etc? Or are some people just taking this as a new chance to further attack her on something?

It's hilarious that people are trying to blame speechwriters and staffers for this. It's like, even if she was reading something written for her (and she wasn't), is she so braindead that she goes on for a full paragraph like this and spouts off a totally invented history without stopping and thinking, yo hold up, what the fuck am I saying?

No. Hell, even in the response she suggests that viewers aren't old enough to remember like she is!

What a weird, nigh-unexplainable brain fart. She not only misremembered, but created some weird glowing picture of Saint Nancy as the reason we started having a national conversation on AIDS. That's a pretty elaborate slip up.

I'm also with Marty Chin here, as a person alive during the period I honestly cannot imagine how someone alive during the period could characterize it that way.

Absolutely horrible statement. No idea how she managed this unforced gaffe, but it'll grab some headlines for sure. Happy she immediately apologized but geez.

Hillary: "Good morning, everyone. My name is Barack Obama, and as American's first African-American president, I would like to encourage more black men -- like myself -- to aspire to achieve anything!"

*hours later*

Hillary: "I misspoke about my name, race, sex, and who I am. For that, I am sorry."

Except in reality Clinton is running on a platform of "the liberal who is not as liberal as Bernie Sanders." I don't think Clinton has a meaningful concern over getting liberals to vote for her.

It is stupid and is the kind of thing a politician says when they're trying to bend over backwards to not offend anyone.

Which is pretty much all the time, really.

Not sure how a person who was alive during the creation of the mirror could make the mistake of thinking she was a black man but I'm glad she quickly apologized.

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.
She fucked up in saying it, but she obviously doesn't actually believe it, so meh.

If she didn't believe in it, why would she say it? It came across her desk, she vouched/okay'd it. She should've done the research before just belting it out.

Again, I don't get this line of thinking. What "research" do you need to do? This is well known stuff, especially in politics. NOT knowing about it is even more damning considering her shaky LGBT history. It's like somebody asking about 9/11 and saying, "yes, it was terrible, the west coast was in shambles." Should've done the research!!

Cursory knowledge of her decades-long history on the national stage?

I'm not so sure on that. I think she could legitimately believe that in the context of the 1980s, the Reagan Administration breaking down after year of ignoring it and finally acknowledging AIDS was a somehow "brave" or "noble" thing. I can see that being the sort of thing a politician of the early 90s who had to convince themselves that Reagan was actually ok would convince themself of, and maybe wouldn't be aware that people have reinterpreted that history a bit in the last few years. Same way she repeated the old Southern myths about how Jim Crow was mostly because of how bad and corrupt Reconstruction was. The sort of thing that you'd never be taught today, but that 20-30 years ago was sort of unquestioned conventional wisdom outside of a few serious historians.

It wasn't a speech but an interview before the funeral today. Likely trying to speak well of the dead and went to far badly. Was she wrong in saying it? Yes. It's not like she was reading from prepared remarks. I think that's largely being missed here for some reason.

Given her record on trans issues(didn't even acknowledge that we exist even late last year), I'm not surprised that something like this would happen. At least she apologized? I still don't like her record on lgbt issues in the least but...i guess this apology is something?

Everyone should watch the documentary How To Survive a Plague (on netflix) for some history of the real heroes that made a difference during the AIDS epidemic in the 80's/90's, not whatever bullshit Hillary was spouting(which she thankfully apologized for)

Maybe she wanted to say something glowing about Nancy, since it's really nice to be nice to dead people regardless of if they were shitty or w/e, and then her brain fell into the rabbit hole. Just weird

She was stuck in a spot where she had to say something positive about the Reagans that wouldn't simultaneously piss off democrats. She obviously failed in the latter by saying something so demonstrably false, so you may be right in that she had managed to convince herself that the Reagan administration's AIDS record was something other than what it was.

So, there's a thread posted 8 hours ago:

Pastor introducing Ted Cruz: gays should be killed, not afraid of prison

That thread is 3 pages long now. This thread was posted less than 20 minutes ago, is now at page 6. I'm not american, but I really baffled by this. There are post literally saying that it would be better for a president to lie to you instead of saying "I'll try not to".

When the republican party candidates are Trump, Cruz or Rubio and you say you wont vote for Hillary or Bernie over things like this, I feel America really deserves the republican candidates.

There's a ton of reasons for the increase interest (primarily that Cruz isn't a person who would ever get a vote from liberal leaning persons), but again, I wouldn't take trends on liberal leaning message boards as indicative of actual voting trends in America. It's not a story that will carry on that long because there's little to be gained for cutting down the liberal candidate and the GOP is straight-up running on a platform that advocates constricting LGBT rights.

We expect better from Clinton. This is surprising, crazy, wild shit. The Ted Cruz thread, not so much.

That's been known for a while now, this is recent. What is under reported regarding Ted however is that he has prominent support from a literal Nazi sympathizer

Republicans being Republican isn't news, Democrats being Republican is.

Yeah, it was a bad spot to be in. She had to say something nice about Nancy Reagan. She obviously can't praise her role in the War on Drugs in the current political climate. So she reached and missed. I'm just not sure how much of that is a genuine mistake, somehow conflating the Reagans' work on Parkinson's with AIDS, and how much of it is just delusion that given the attitudes and Bigfoot of that time period, maybe Reagan was somehow actually ahead of the curve on this (obviously false).

Is this meme now?

I keep reading this.

It's really weird to me. I'm a very left wing uk gaffer and Hillary is well to the right of me but if I had a vote, yeah it's a horrid 'hold your nose' job but I'd vote for Hillary without a thought before any of the republican field. I mean maybe if it was someone like McCain I'd understand where people were coming from..ish.

Yeah not like they fucked over someone who was their friend cause he had aids (Rock Hudson). Heartless cunts.

At this point we should just stop pretending that Hillary isn't actually a Republican.

The choices this election cycle are Hillary (R), Trump (I), and Bernie (D).

Yeah, I don't consider Trump a Republican. He's just using that party for his own devices because it's a two-party system.

Wtf is this bullshit? She pushed for LGBT rights as SOS

I suspect they were discussing her history of fabrication -- sniper fire on runways and that -- rather than her record on LGBT issues.

Also, try to find a more reasonable way to respond to discussion than "WTF is this bullshit?"

And this is how the thread goes from discussing a fairly horrendous mistake on Clinton's part to arguing bullshit like your factually inaccurate and extremely dishonest characterization of her political history.

She had just gotten done talking a lot about the Reagans' work with alzheimer's and other things. She could have just stopped, but she had another point she wanted to make...
