Horizon Zero Dawn Spoiler-free Impressions (for real this time)

Wait, the gameplay in a "role playing Game" is just a bonus? That sounds really silly my friend.

What I meant by 'gameplay' is the action-oriented combat. But yeah, I play various kinds of RPGs, from turn-based, real-time, tactics, action, everything. But I never consider the combat in RPGs as my main point of interest. It's always about my progression and the story or lore. For the exception of Souls games.

This game doesn't appear to have classes, or a progression / experience tree or anything.

Maybe I'm missing something; but this isn't a WRPG or ARPG, it's an open world shooter w/ gear you can purchase and upgrade.

Would love to be corrected on that; but what other RPG elements exist?

I see. I like my progression to be impactful so I really don't like ineffectual percentages and prefer item progression ala Zelda where my abilities get enhanced or a I get a new option and choice to make. Even BoTW keeps that element, albeit made more general it seems. Souls is the rare exception where they make it all work somehow.

Skills, dialogue and choices, stats to modify

Not sure what else

Classes dont make an rpg at all.

Same as the witcher, and many other RPG's. It's still an rpg, with dialog choices...It having good combat does not mean it cannot be an rpg. Classes never mad a game an RPG.

I'd argue the means to mold your build is what separates games with RPG elements like Tomb Raider and Far Cry from full-fledged RPGs, classic, action, or otherwise

So without thumbing through all these pages can someone answer these questions:

Any idea of main story length vs full completion length ?

Is it challenging ? Can it be made challenging ?

Story interesting?

Combat interesting ?

Are the side quests meh skippable bleh, or Witcher 3 oooh la la?

1. Dunno

2. Wesker Loves the difficulty on Very Hard.

3. Setting is awesome, characters sound pretty great, some epic moments too, intro is very strong. Lore is intriguing as always with Guerrilla.

4. Combat is excellent it seems, heaps of praise on the enemy design and combat scenarios.

5. The Lamp Loves the sidequests and the details and nuggets that they add to the world.

An open world with the controlled pacing of a linear game? I'm interested to see how well it works out

You actually nailed it right on the head. I couldn't put it better myself. You'll have people here who will throw an outrage because RPG's have trained them to sludge through the bloat of a skill tree and insurmountable grinding; but I'm always open to new experiences.

Main story is probably around 20 versus 30 + with everything.

Even on normal getting my butt kicked at times.

Story and lore is very interesting. Combat is fun, with different elements to use and side quests seems to range from alright to pretty good. The emergent gameplay during fighting and the various enemies is a plus.

And that's why I don't really dig Zelda games.

Yes, and this is where Horizon is lacking imho. You can't be anything other than the agile archer. While there are
three
parts in the skill three, but there aren't any meaningful choices for our builds.

I kinda understand the reason though, we're fighting robot dinosaurs, after all. Aloy couln't be a master of melee or a tank to fight them. The theme sets its own limitations in the RPG aspects.

Looks like 20-30 hours for the main campaign, up to 40+ for completionists. Mileage will vary depending on your play style and how much you like to explore or engage with side content.

Hard and very hard can be challenging and you can die in a few hits if you're not careful. Difficulty can be adjusted on the fly if you feel like changing it.

Story appears to be very good and exceeding expectations.

Combat is the best part, requiring the use of your whole inventory of weapons and traps, and taking advantage of weak points.

Side quests are high quality and divided into side quests (with more meaty content) and errands (simpler quests for items and experience).

Eh most rpgs people are just one class.

25-30 hours main story, about 40 hours for 100%. This is very early reports. Your mileage may vary.

Very challenging at times. Can be made more challenging (you lose health faster or lose more chunk of health per hit)

Surprisingly interesting story and character(s).

Combat with robots is the main focus and is very satisfying. Combat with humans is lacking, but again not the focus.

Side quests closer to Witcher 3 but not quite Witcher 3. Still surprisingly good.

I'm not talking about class, but builds. Let's say The Witcher games. While Geralt is a swordman, he can be an agile swordsman, a bulky one that can take many hits, a master of signs (magician), or even a master of traps. Each build gives different approaches and possibilities in combats. And the players are free to choose which style they want to play.

But then even that's debatable because in Witcher, all you can be is a badass swordsman

The primary difference is actual playstyle vs. builds. Witcher might offer more builds but those aren't necessarily conductive to actual playstyle. Given Horizons more sandboxy nature and approach to combat, it wouldn't be surprising at all if the freedom you had to tackle encounters was far greater than what typical builds allow.

Love all the replies. Sounds EXACTLY what I wanted. I was dreading it would be a 50+ or 100+ hour slog fest or have really good content that I know I would never experience.

The length, story, and combat being interesting and challenging is fantastic.

Day 1 still. :D

I think that's covered in my second post.

Not really. You can kill a whole group of bandits without ever using your sword.

But I guess you have a point. We shall see how's the possibilities in Horizon. Only one more week to go.

One side quest gave me an epic boss battle so do the side quests.

Really I am surprised at the quality of everything. The writing, the lore, the design of the world. I'm starting to feel this game will get a ton of 9s and 10s. Some people will just not like the combat and well if you don't then this game is probably not for you.

It's an amazing first game in a series. But there is definite room for expansion, I would love for more elements to be fleshed out. They have the combat down now add more to it.

Just waiting on the edgy 6 from site.

That's the exception not the rule, even focusing on Bombs/signs, most encounters end up with sword play due to how the combat is, and how Signs/Bombs are implemented. The game leads you to have to use the sword more then not.

Pst, honeymoon phase.
/S

It seems you went from I really like it (7 or 8 out of 10) to this is great (9 or 10 out of 10).

Yea, I know that the builds offer diversity. Alchemy made death march a joke. I was just pointing out that some games focus on playstyle diversity, some on build diversity and some a mix. This seems to be the former. Where as Witcher was mostly build. And something like Dragons Dogma is the mix.

Yes, but there are more in the combat than just offense. In defense, there are so many choices as well. As mentioned above, you can be an agile or a tanky swordsman. You can also focus on signs so you don't even need to dodge as you can keep that shield up for longer and stronger. Choices.

While in Horizon, what can you do to protect yourself other than rolling around and around and around?

Did u say good lore? Go on...

HStallion

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
This game kind of reminds me of a game with rupees, Triangle power and a guy named after a piece of a chain. Rip off
