how can an ipod cost the same as a 1gb duo?

An iPod Shuffle's MP3/AAC circuitry is not expensive to manufacture and tack on to the device. Apple may also be using slower (read: cheaper) flash memory.

i dont understand. how is this possible? its quite frustrating actually.
if you think that's bad, imagine that there are 1GB mp3 players that have a BACKLIT LCD SCREEN at the same price too!!!

how do they even make money?

I'm guessing the wholesale price of the of 1GB Pro duo is close to $80 seeing how it has been sold for as little as ~$90 online.

The 1GB iPod shuffle, however, is likely around the $120 mark I'd guess.

ipod shuffle is onsale everywhere for $99 every other week.

This is like asking how come a 2005 Bentley Arnage cost more than many houses... plus of course it's a proprietary format... although I see one other company...(samsung?) has memory stick compatible camcorders....

...and line-in, and microphone, and FM radio with 25 presets, and USB 2 straight out of the box, and smaller.... That's a few ands.

Which mp3 player is this? Color me interested.

I'm talking about Creative's flash based players. They rock. Just got a Creative Muvo N200 1GB, one of the worlds smallest 1GB players for ~$130, with all that stuff. I'm also bashing iPod in the iPod thread (last page) with it. :P

tut tut, 1GB duos cost this much well before PSP was even announced. Even more.
Exactly. Back then, they cost a lot more to make. But they haven't dropped the price because they don't need to.

I always thought it was because scale of manufacturing was super small because it was proprietary. Not that it isn't needlessly expensive anyway, since Sandisk sells theirs for often 60-70 dollars cheaper.
