Rec Room has so many great ideas. I love the character customization. I love the player representation and interaction. Tossing a teammate a spare ball in dodgeball was one of those VR "holy shit" moments for me just because of how natural it felt. I high fived a guy after playing a few rounds of paddleball. I had fun filming a game of dodgeball from the bleachers. During my games of paintball, a guy on my team was doing a ridiculously good Arnold Schwarzenegger impression which had everyone on both teams laughing hysterically. I loved every minute of it.

I really want to like Rec Room, and I do like several of the (less popular) activities like paddle ball and disk golf. But, not all activities really fit with teleportation movement (Dodge Ball and Paint Ball) and keep me from really getting into them.

Does anyone know if it's possible to do something like setting up Mame with Virtual Desktop to play light gun games?

I'd buy New Retro Arcade in a second if it supported that feature but I don't want to buy it before knowing that it's definitely in there.

Getting to play light gun games like Carnevil and The Ocean Hunter with a huge virtual screen with Vive controls and possibly even geometry 3d (I think that's what its called when things have scale and depth) seems like the absolute best way to experience these games :D

It's not. Though I think they're planning on adding it. Should know more soon; the devs are promising a post soon with their feature roadmap.

Oh also, that gif attract screen thing did not make it in. In fact, one of the devs posted in the Steam forum that the feature might not be coming at all. Some dude created a whole bunch of gif attract screens in preparation. Poor guy.

That's good to know thanks :D

In case it sounded like I was jaded about the situation I should clarify that I'm definitely interested in New Retro Arcade, but the ability to play Light Gun games would push me over the edge and make it an instant purchase.

Like you said, if they used actual movie files it would be a performance killer. I have no idea if this feature made it in.

Real emulation could kill the CPU, but movies could actually be doable. Decoding a 4K video doesn't take much effort on a modern CPU, and a modern GPU can practically do it while sleeping. A single 4K video frame can be chopped up into 24 VGA quality frames. Rendering that many separate GIFs would be harder on the system.

Now actually encoding the video on the other hand... That would require a bit more work.

I had no idea this was out. Maybe I'm out of the loop it it's not big enough news. The only reason I looked up it's release is because Terry Crews has it in his new videos that are getting posted everywhere.

VR has always been 'coming soon' for the past 3 years, so I kinda gave up following a lot of the news and I'm surprised it's actually out. All I know is this is the VR headset I should be getting over the others because it has the most support and steamvr support.

I really want to get one now and have a few questions.

1) How does it handle tearing and judder? Does it have variable refresh rate sync like adaptive sync or static like vsync?

2) What's the refresh rate on it anyway and do I need to match the fps with the refresh all the time (related to previous ques)?

3) What's the shipping weight of the package? I'm going to have it freight forwarded so that would be nice to know.

4) I have a 980ti@1420mhz. Should I be good?

I'm almost ready to buy this thing.

Wow, you must really not pay attention to have missed the release.

1. Tearing is not an issue. If your frame rate is not aligning with the refresh rate of the display, tearing is the least of your concerns.
2. 90hz. Generally yes, you need to be hitting 90 fps. There is reprojection that mitigates frame rate drops, but you don't want to rely on it.
3. 20 lbs.
4. You should be good for now.

Thanks, that helps A LOT. Good for now sounds good too. Planning to get a 1180ti or whatever volta cards with hbm2 will be called.

I made a post a few pages ago about how I had a great customer service experience with HTC, and I'm going to have to add on to that.

My HMD shipped off on July 25th and got here today.

The defect on my HMD was that the right screen wasn't applying mura correction, causing a the right screen to appear to be less bright, pure blacks, and smearing.

It's all fixed now. I have to say, this was a very painless and smooth RMA process.

I was thinking, would it be possible to use industrial strength velcro to attach the lighthouses to my wall? Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00006RSP1/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Is this a bad idea?

Well, you want your base stations to be tilted down in order to take full advantage of their field of view. Flat against the wall may be problematic in this regard.

[EDIT] Oh, I suppose you meant attaching the velcro to the mount. I'll bet that would work, I use that kind of velcro for a few things and it holds GREAT. The seal to the wall might loosen if you have textured walls and/or temperature fluctuations.

If you can spare the 8 bucks you might as well try it. I think you will get some tracking instability. How bad and how much it annoys you are hard to guess.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F3B4YPS/?tag=neogaf0e-20

I have two of those vertically in my living room and they have been working great. Excellent non permanent installation

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0114OF7TY/?tag=neogaf0e-20

I use those as clamps.

This might actually work really well for me, thanks for the suggestion!

Just tried the DOTA VR hub thing. Despite not being in to DOTA at all, it is REALLY cool. Makes me want a VR MOBA even more (like one from the first person perspective).

That wouldn't work. There's barely any flat surface area on the back side of the bracket to stick to. It's a ribbed structure. It might hold for a bit, but certainly not something I'd want to trust it to.

Bah, meant to edit, not quote my old post lol...
Would it? Just how much work does it take for a modern intel cpu to render a dozen or so super old arcade games. (I can't imagine there would ever be more than 12 in view at once).
Depends on the emulated system and game. Accurate emulation can be quite processor intensive.

I know everyone says they're tired of them, but I still haven't bought any VR "shooting galleries" for my Vive.

Is Space Pirate Trainer still the best one? I reeeeeeally don't like the art style. What are some other good options? I greatly value polish over features/complexity.

(Raw Data isn't a shooting gallery and doesn't count)

skeet vr is fun and free. SPT is good and they are still adding new things to it

Zombie Training Simulator
Don't let the cardboard cutout zombies fool you. This one is really solid. Guns feel great. Graphics are really solid.

Blasters of the Universe
The main hook of this one is that it has kind of a shmup/bullet hell bent to it. It also has a a huge amount of gun customization. It's in EA, but it's one of the more polished VR games.

A-10 VR
Very arcadey experience. Powerups. I find this one kind of boring but I've seen a lot of people in to it.

Steampuff: Phinnegan's Factory
This one just came out. Not a whole lot of content right now, but it has a strong art style and polished graphics. Probably the most like SPT in this list, but still pretty different.

Anyone tried Everest VR yet?
I have a hard time rationalizing the price of that experience vs the length of it. Would have perhaps taken the bait back at launch when there was precious little else out there, but now? I'll be waiting for it to go on a steep discount sale before I consider it at this point.

For pure polish and joy, I haven't really seen anything that comes close to SPT, even though it's content is pretty bare bones at the moment.

Serious Sam VR is still my most anticipated game for VR. I like shooting galleries, and even though everyone complains about there being too many, there aren't really many good ones available yet. Especially if you don't like having your personal space invaded by enemy avatars, something both SPT and The Lab's Longbow solves perfectly.

HordeZ is sort of my favourite. It's like Left 4 Dead but you slowly hover through the level instead of actively moving, and you get 4-5 weapons all the time that you have to keep stocked with ammo dropped by Zs, which come in about 8 different varieties and come at you from lots of different angles. It's surprisingly not mindless - you need to be selecting the right weapon for the right moment, managing both hands (with reloading) at once or you'll get overwhelmed, making sure to grab ammo/health whenever it's dropped.

Plus there are so many zombies, and the weapons all feel so good, that it's the only Vive shooting game so far to really sate my thirst for shooting all the fucking time. You'll literally be in a whirlwind of 'shootshootshootshoot - fuck, reload left hand - shootshootshoot - fuck, reload right hand - shootshootshoot - fuck, big guy, swap to shotgun - shootshootshoot - ah a brief break, quickly grab some ammo - shit, here they come - shootshootshoot' ad nauseum. You get addicted to shooting like hell and blasting the fuck out of zombies.

Really good shit. Brookhaven Experiment is a far more polished, but IMO less deep and fun alternative.

The early access status of a lot of the games/experiences is half the fun. Seeing where devs take the games as they get more experienced with the medium and apply feedback from the players. A lot of them are very active with updates churning out on average about once a week. As such, even with the same stable of games, the experience can be significantly different from one week to the next.

I mean, it's not great for those looking for finished, polished, AAA level stuff that'll last them dozens of hours. For those that can appreciate the evolving, experimental nature of it all though? It's something special.

Definitely. And there's still loads of fun to be had in the meantime, even without the AAA titles!

Regarding shooting galleries. I just spent 30 minutes in Zombie Training Simulator, and while I'm not completely sold on this game, there is some decent fun to be had. There are several modes, but the main one (that I tried out) has you defending against a huge horde of paper cutout zombies, and it is basically a management game where you constantly need to throw bait to keep the horde away from you, throw explosives in strategic positions and shot some zombies in the head in between managing the horde. It's a pretty basic game play loop, but it is a bit more nuanced than I had imagined before trying it out and it is a bit more varied than the average shooting gallery.

Oh man, Arma in VR is my Dream. Too bad if Bohemia made it it would make me vomit.

How does locomotion work here? Is it just a button press? Looks real fun.

Regarding Everest VR: I'm really tempted. Yes, the price is steep, but I've just bought and finished ABZU yesterday for a similar price and it was well worth it, even if it lasts a couple hours.

I'll think about it. I don't want to spoil it though looking at footage.

I have a question about software for the Vive. I see a lot of games that fall into the Shooting Gallary category and I'm not particularly fond of those. I really enjoyed Tilt Brush and TruBlu demos (the latter felt super short though) and was wondering if there's more software like that on Vive? Something where one just takes in the nice vistas or do something productive in a 3D space? Maybe not yet but upcoming?

My favourite "shooting gallery" is Holopoint, since it's 360° and really active. I haven't tried some of the more recent ones though (mostly just playing Raw Data for my VR action fix).

It's not software, but Solus Project is not really action-based, and long, and has great locations to discover.

It's probably the only game that has caused me to rip the cord from the break out box multiple times. I'm not a huge fan of the samurai stages either, I prefer projectiles to dudes swarming at me. There is just something unsettling about that which I never seem to get used to. Other than that, it is probably the most active game I've played.

If you liked The Blu, I'd definitely take a look at Everest VR, BUT BE WARNED it's only ~ 30 minutes long (if that) despite costing $24.

Cool, I'll look for a trailer when I get out of work.

A bit high for 30 minutes but maybe if it goes on a bigger steam sale?

You know that guy that is always lttp? Thats me.

Bought my GTX 980 TI yesterday and it was delivered a few hours ago. First time changing PC parts alone and nothing fried. Now I'm ready for VR(HTC Vive) *-*
I was using a GTX 660

Just need to buy a HTC Vive now, but it's not an option now. The only viable way is paying more than $ 2000.00
Edit: Sorry for the useless bump.

I would recommend universe sandbox 2. It is a real universe simulation where you can zoom in and out with scales, time and spawn whatever body of rock exists in our universe. It has premade scenarios such as earth and moon or our solar system and many more.

I have found it to be my own planetarium as I lay on my back on the sofa and simulate explosions and spawn moons/planets/stars and watch how they react and move thru the space and time. Truly a space out game :D

Only drawbacks are perf on bigger simulations if you go crazy with shooting objects and the resolution is not there yet -> playtime of a few hours as your eyes zoom on small pixels.
