Hyper Light Drifter |OT| We On A HyperLight Beam

Love the look of this game. Really reminiscent of Evangelion in some of the enemy designs. But holy crap is the 30 fps really hard to look at.

When the game saves, it remembers your current health & health pack total. If you mess up an encounter early on, it's sometimes worthwhile to intentionally kill yourself rather than try to salvage things just so you don't lose health/packs.

I noticed that, but it only really made itself known when autosaved when I had 2 hp and no health packs. That wasn't fun.

At least warping restores all your health. I just gotta play more carefully that's all.

I really really wish I can figure out the graphics issue for my Surface since that's where I want to play this. It works on my desktop just fine and I gave the first 15-20 minutes a go and it feels so good but I didn't want to get too far in since I don't believe this has cloud saves.

Agh... just did a disgustingly hard dash challenge past an 8 segment door in the west area, NG+ so one mistake = death, got a sexy outfit as a reward. I returned home... but you can't change cloaks in NG+? What?

Edit: Can anyone on NG+ confirm whether they're experiencing the same behaviour? Wondering whether it might be a bug, seems such a strange decision given so many rewards are outfit based.

Got a fucking bug AGAIN ENDING SPOILERS
Was on my way to kill the final boss, I hit him to trigger the script with the final hit. Then the hero split up in two which means one of them killed the boss and the other just waited here so I can't continue the boss was hard so I wonder if the bug will trigger again if I managed to kill him one more time

What kind of Surface are you attempting to play on? I have a Surface Book myself, one with the dedicated nVidia GPU, but if there are issues trying to get it to run (like many games, due to the odd screen resolution) then I'll just wait for PS4 version after all.

I don't think it ever opens.

In the room to the right and up there is a pillar you can shoot with the laser beam. There are two ranged guys close to it for reference.

Once you kill them and create the bridge, there is a hidden passage on the wall you walk through to get to that locked room.

Do you need a different weapon for the switch to activate? I'm shooting the damn thing and does nothing.

Yeah seems to be super strange but it definitely does it only so often. I'm currently at the north boss and sometimes I'll move my mouse and sprint a direction but it doesn't quite go the way I was pointing. I tested it before in an open space and sometimes it would "lag" and sometimes it wouldn't, strange but not entirely game breaking.
Oh im using a controller. Kbm doesnt seem to be recommended for this game.

I've experienced the same thing multiple times. I'd say a good chuck of my deaths so far were a result of this.

My 360 controller is currently broken or else I'd be playing it that way. This game really feels like it favors a gamepad.

It's so weird. The soundtrack, so far, really does nothing for me and I don't understand why. I usually adore Disasterpeace but for some reason I just don't feel anything here which makes me sad
This is my only complaint about the game. I might actually turn down the music and put on some prog rock.

Surface Pro 3. If you have a dedicated nVidia GPU I'm pretty sure you'll be fine. The issue is with the Intel Graphics driver.

Hooray, beat the last boss!

Really enjoyed it. Just in time for Enter the Gungeon next week

I have beaten 2 bosses but can't beat the West one to save my life

Some tips:

Lure him over to the green crystals containing the samurai-type enemies while he's jumping and slashing, then dodge his sword attacks (always two strikes). He can smash these crystals even though you can't, and this will mean he cannot summon them later in the fight.

His attack pattern is always:

- three sets of two sword swipes (dodge as he gears up for each one)
- pause (good for getting some hits in) then crystal path attack - very similar to the larger monsters you've already fought in that area
- three bullets, usually two-pause-one

If you can absorb the bullets then that's useful for some extra firepower (I don't have the sword upgrade that lets you bat bullets back, that might work here?).

Which phase are you having difficulty with?

4 or 5 hours is extremely fast in my opinion. I spent close to five hours in the game and visited a bit of the west, defeated the boss in the east and climbed the mountain in the north. I like exploring and taking my time. So maybe its that. Or me sucking and wasting time at the dash challenge.

Nice. There's so much I want to do still with this game. Beat it on NG+, get 100% on either save file, and speed run it.

Also, yeah. It took me 8 hours but I also explored and looked for as many secrets as possible.

Just took down the north and east bosses. That shoot-slash-shoot-slash combo is invaluable.

Also,
you can get more than 4 gems per area? Whaaattt?

Since I'm not caught up on the thread at all, did anyone else request a PS4 key with their kickstarter order, but add a Steam copy via Backerkit? It seems like both of my keys are being held hostage until the PS4 release, which isn't so awesome.

So to the people that had problems getting a controller to work with this game yesterday, has everyone successfully gotten it to work now? Is there anyone who is still having problems?

He does 3 faster slashes when in low health.

Yeah, eight. 4 more around the 4 in the rhombus shape.

This system is needlessly fiddly. The game should restock medicine and respawn enemies at bonfires fast travel points.

I honestly can't believe there's an achievement for beating the game without dying

Whoever gets that legitimately deserves an actual medal in real life

You beat the entire game in 4 hours?

I got around the same time. I have 5 hours in steam, but that is after playing a bit of new game plus. I am sure there are lots of secrets that require back tracking, but I wouldn't be surprised if the average time to beat the game is only 4hr - 5hr.

I totally disagree. I LOVE the fact that enemies stay dead for a significant amount of time, so I can backtrack through areas if I know I've missed something without worrying about being shot at. Given that enemies mostly give you nothing for killing them except either opening locked doors or the occasional upgrade part, I'd rather they just don't come back.

As far as I've found, on the flip side, medicine DOES respawn in these places, so it's easy to stockpile again once you've gone back.

Plus there's always at least one medicine point just before a boss.

I'm around 5-6 hours in, only beat the North boss and partially completed the West and East areas

Guess I like to take my time

Finished it too.

Wanted more to be honest. You could do wonderful thing with that dash but the game don't exploit it.

Still a cool game nonetheless

Also
about the glyphes we can see around the world what is the meaning of this ?

I found the east boss to be very easy. I think that devs might have been trying to subtly guide the player in that direction with the dog, because it felt like a cakewalk after the north boss. Its attacks were much easier to dodge, and the boss could even damage itself with one of its attacks

I've finished the eastern area, so I feel I have a good handle on the game.

Best thing about it is without a doubt the visuals. This retro-modern look is really outstanding, and they've excelled at crafting a world that clearly has a history behind it.

Gameplay is hit or miss to be honest. I upgraded the dash, and I just really don't like the timing involved with doing multi-dashes. It just annoys me and I don't feel like my dashes are flowing together. Doesn't feel good at all. In general there's a feel of sluggishness and unresponsiveness. Yes, I'm bringing up the dumbfounding decision of making this game at 30fps. I've already encountered situations where I have over a dozen enemies on screen, and several them are throwing not only one projectile, but multiple projectiles. Can be really hard to keep track of all that shit at this framerate. Attempting to avoid projectiles can be an exercise in frustration when you don't have those defense upgrades, which I assume makes thing bearable. Aiming is messy, and making you stand in one place makes no sense to me considering how hectic the combat can get.

But the least thing I like about this game is how it handles health. It makes the game extra frustrating for no reason whatsoever. Enemies never drop health. Ever. And the game doesn't restore anything to you when you die, not even the usual three pieces, Zelda style. If the game autosaves when you have no health tanks and only one health block, when you die you'll respawn in that exact same state. Meaning you're fucked. The only way to rechage your health would be to warp to back to a warp zone, which simply means you have make the trek all the way back to wherever it is you died. And along the way, of course, your health will probably be reduced, so you might end up in the same situation. Am I missing something here? It's just annoying. As far as I'm concerned, there should be health drops. The enemies in friggin' Demon's Souls have health drops (in the way of herbs).

It's a good thing that game is as pretty as it is. The music though, kinda disappointing. It's mostly this atmospheric and dissonant noise to be honest. Nothing like Disasterpiece's Fez.

Shooting's really useful IMO. You can even the odds a bit from a distance before getting into the thick of combat, and then you dash out to get some breathing room and take some shots in the midst of battle

When you have a dozen enemies in jumping around and throwing projectiles... Staying in still in one spot while you aim just ain't useful at all. I don't think they thought out this aspect of the game properly.

1) You don't have to aim. Just tap the shoot button to quick-fire in the direction you're facing
2) I've found it useful, especially against groups. Lure enemies in close, jump back, and fire, and you can defeat or severely damage entire groups of enemies with a single shot. Especially with the railgun or shotgun
3) Since slashing charges your shots, you can deliver a steady stream of damage. Slash, slash, slash, dodge attack, fire from a distance, close the distance and slash some, recharge your shots. Melee and ranged compliment eachother

Yeah I'd say that sounds about right. I just beat it in 4 hours, 6 minutes according to the save file. I honestly feel like it's off since I did spend a decent amount of time exploring and backtracking, plus I died too many times to count. In the end, I barely touched any of the secrets though, with only two keys found and none of those square-symbol doors fully unlocked.

I'll wait for the Vita version before I start really digging in for 100% completion.

Shooting that thing does nothing for me. It just blinks red for a second but nothing happens. Any ideas?

As long as the game is highly replayable, and you're not doing it just to get the achievement, it should probably come naturally, given how refined the combat is.

The orb shooting gun is too damn useful. The guns in general add damage and crowd control, your sword is more of a poking tool without the dash slashes or the charged slash.

If you think that shooting isn't good... try to work things differently?

I am at the final boss I guess? With 6 hours play time I think it was fun. I hope they will take their time and adding new content to the console release. I would love to fight against those two guys:
The co-op and challenge mode is missing as well which is funny because the first playable demo at conventions was a mix of co-op and challenge if I remember correctly?

Anyway. With around 6 hours playtime, I only found 20 of the 32 triangles, two keys and there is a lot of stuff we have not figured out yet. But I will keep the rest for console release. I hope they do not add the "Don't die" achievement.

Thanks! It did help. It even gave me
first key.

Yes. The east boss is the easiest of the three. Even if I died more at the west boss because he was my first one, the north boss fight is the most difficult one.

I think East is the best way to start, not only is it the easiest area, you also get the
shotgun
which is an incredible weapon for later in the game.

The east boss is definitely the easiest, but the north area itself feels like an introduction area. It is smaller and less complex than the east.

I think I only found three keys. I would have to recheck, most I found on accident while looking for health.
