Developers knew 99% of consumers would play these games on RF or composite/regular scart. Therefore they made the games catering to that crowd. And they took advantage of all the quirks and artifacts these connections cause while they were at it. There's already the Sonic waterfall posted but there are countless other examples using dithering for blending fake colors, smoother gradients and transparencies. By using a better connection you don't get these quirks and you lose some intended effects.
So yeah, you gain some you lose some. It's a "pick your poison" situation. Sure, i don't get as sharp image but i prefer playing pre-DC games on composite because i know i won't lose any of the intended quirks that complete the picture the artists intended.

Anyway, i live in Greece and during the 8/16 bit days consoles were bundled with RF. At least the ones i bought were (A Master System 2 and later a Mega Drive). In the PS1/N64 gen they were bundled with composite and a SCART adapter where you connected the composite cables.

In a lot of ways, it was going the way Skyward Sword went, before Skyward Sword existed.Well I think it's great. Yeah it's a little more streamlined than the first two, a little more condensed, but I think that works in its favor sometimes, esp. compared to echoes. Bryyo and Skytown Elysia are great areas.

Some CRT's can be "rebuild" by technicians and enthusiasts, either using rejuvenation tools (basically recalibrating and increasing voltage, much like you do with a failing laser on CD drives) and although in some cases that's a temporary fix, let's say something like a PVM can last a while until it reaches it's state before intervention. If there was enough interest to you could replace electron guns and phosphor inside a cathode ray (which is probably what Thomas Electronics does).
They were manufactured in india and china at least until a few years back, perhaps also Russia, the guys still build ancient cars. There are advantages to old tech in regards to low scale production, no R&D, cheap manufacturing machinery and maintenance of said equipment. The tech is certainly on the way out, but a niche market is a niche market. People paying a lot of money for some old CRT is what makes something like Retrotink exist, so I wouldn't be surprised if more CRT restoration facilities pop up or target more regular customers. Mass manufacturing is not possible unless they do what photo film manufacturers are doing, investing in R&D to come up with less-poluting stuff.

It also invests a bit more in texture detailing than geometry, which Metroid Prime did to amazing effect. So in some ways I think artistic direction on Prime 1 feels more modern. Metroid prime was all about geometric detail, like holes in walls and stuff, with 64x64 pixel textures. Metroid Prime 3 is all about, some of that yes, but a lot of 512x512 textures. Thing is geometric detail looks awesome when you blow it up, 512x512 textures are huge for the Wii, but they're just blurry in HD. looks positively amazing on a Wii plugged to a CRT though.
Echoes is a motherfucker to get into, due to the game palette being very "dune-ish", and you can't stop playing until you finish or you'll be lost, but the level design is super tight.

But this isn't even about resolution. It's about motion clarity. Even a modern game will have much better motion clarity on a CRT.

Yeah, i wasn't expecting it to be that good. I know old CRTs have some qualities that modern panels haven't reached yet, like the complete lack of motion blur because they don't use the "sample and hold" method modern panels use.
So i knew it was going to look sharp in motion and all that. But i wasn't expecting such a huge difference. And this comes from someone who has a 240hz PC monitor and regularly plays some older games at 240fps. In modern panels, the more fps you get, the less the motion blur is. At 240hz/fps, the motion is very clear compared to the 60hz/fps blur fest. But even that doesn't come close to the clarity of the CRT, despite only being 60hz/fps (the game runs at 60fps). It looks so sharp when in motion and everything feels like it has more depth. It's a feast for the eyes and that's with a crappy composite cable.
Younger people who never played on a CRT don't know what they are missing and this is kind of a blessing. Because once you see how much more clarity CRTs offer, it's hard to go back and not think about it. It's like display technology took a few steps forward and a massive step back. That's without even mentioning the lower input lag a CRT offers as well.
Now i get that the Wii on that CRT only outputs a 480i image. Yet my eyes felt better than playing a game on my 2020 Samsung LCD at 4k, or my 1080p Alienware 240hz PC monitor. It was better than playing the same game upscaled on the Dolphin emulator. Yes, modern games look amazing and very detailed on the modern panels when they don't move. But when they start moving, everything goes down the drain. So, if i had to choose between lower resolution/size and CRT clarity VS the best quality still images, i would choose the CRT. And if i needed higher resolution, a PC CRT monitor would be even better. But i find it's too difficult to connect a modern PC/console on an old 480i CRT. Has anyone ever did this? I do have some CRT PC monitors but all of them have issues so i can't use them.

I then got a bigger Panasonic plasma around 2011. Never had burn in. And I'd leave my tv on for hours after dinner if I was surfing the net watching sports where there'd be fixed UI on screen. I agree plasmas are heavy as I always made sure my brother or buddy helped me pick up the 60" TV from the store or put it in the right spot when I moved, but there were times I said fuck it and just heaved it myself onto the metal stand. Heavy yes, but it's not like any person is going to be moving a TV around the house every week, so who cares. I must had left that 60" TV in the same spot on the TV stand for 7 years when it was all set in place.

I think your much better bet would be getting a Raspberry Pi since the SNES Mini is just using emulation anyway. You can get native composite output from the Pi at 240p or even use S-video or RGB SCART if your TV supports them. It’s basically the same thing but with much better output options.

Ya, I think it largely depended on the use case. My 2010 Panasonic is still free of burn-in but I only ever used it for films and games. My friend’s 2013 plasma got badly burned in (in half the time) because he also used it a lot for TV broadcasts and football etc.In my own experience, retention on plasma was very real, and very scary.
TV channel logos and game HUDs would get stamped on the screen in a matter of minutes (if pure white) to a couple of hours, and some would remain faintly visible for weeks after you stopped actively displaying them. Temporary retention was guaranteed if you spent just an hour on a single video game. I would always, always leave the TV on an empty channel with static noise for at least 15 minutes before turning it off after playing a game.
Weeks is not forever and still "mostly" temporary, it just takes quite a while to go away. Now don't get me wrong, early plasmas were quite lazy when it came to going back to normal and were quite easy to "excite" (and their expected lifespan was also lower); they also definitely had the burn-in period where phosphor was even less "trained" so you had some disasters that at the very least took quite a while to clean-up and at worst took so long that were deemed as definitive burn-in. In reality I doubt it ever was, I've never seem permanent burn-in that wasn't getting better if you discontinued the abuse. Yes, but it probably burned the rest of the pixels to match the burned ones. If you measured your OLED now it would certainly output less brightness than it did as new.With OLED it’s very different. I played Elden Ring for 190 hours and that compass that’s always onscreen didn’t leave a trace behind.

The problem with the Classic Mini consoles is they always display a 16:9 screen with borders. So on a 4:3 TV, the actual game’s screen is squashed. A pity, because even if it isn’t 240p, it’s still interesting to see the results.
The Switch instead, it switches (heh) to 4:3 automatically and it’s oddly satisfying to see a 1080p game like MK8 running on an analog screen. Motion is absolutely flawless.

Hell, the concept of a "pixel" is tenuous at best on old systems because there is so much analog stuff going on with non square pixels and all sorts of weird shit. Like, if an artist is going to display a circle on an SNES the sprite would be 20x16 pixels, not 20x20 pixels.
"Pixel art" is unbelievably misunderstood, and playing emulators on a computer for decades by people who have never even used an actual console on a CRT has completely distorted the perception of it.

so to the layman, browsing in a store, you could either buy the heavier, more expensive, costlier to run, dimmer, hotter plasma (& you get to worry about burn-in too), or... you can buy the "superior" LCD, which is what "everyone else is buying" too.

But as OP mentioned, this is about motion clarity of CRTs, that shit is insane. I recently got a SyncMaster 793s after watching those DF CRT Hype videos and i gotta say, they are right, it looks insanely smooth even at "just" 60hz.
The SnycMaster 793s can do 4:3 Aspect Ratio at 640x480@135hz, 736x552@120hz, 800x600@110hz, 1024x768@85hz and 16:9 Aspect Ratio at 976x549@120hz or 720p@85hz
I tried taking some pics but my phone does not do it justice, as you can see these things are better when viewd in the dark.
Dark Forces 2 at 135hz is so smooth, fighting games look amazing on this (that btw is a RetroPi connected via hdmi to vga cable), i tried emulating PS2 with Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 in 4K downsampled to 1280x960@60hz i've never seen Tony skate so smoothly before. For some reason i can only get Quake 2 to run at 800x600@110hz, still insanely smooth. Doom pics are 736x552 for 4:3 and 976x549 for 16:9, both 120hz.
Only downside i've seen so far is blooming and phosphor decay/trails and this monitor is kinda failing so sometimes you get wrong colors but it fixes itself after a while.
