Nintendo will dominate GOTY awards with 3 games; MK World, DK Bananza, and Metroid Prime 4. Has this ever happened before?

MK World was a lock for a nom if it was 90+. Now, not so sure. Very competitive year. Metroid Prime might be the stronger contender

Not that I can think of. I hope Metroid 4 doesn't drop this year. I don't want the scramble to find a Switch 2 or be tempted to pay scalper prices.

I do have that Char Obscur game downloaded. My ability to play turn based RPGs has been taken by entropy, but I still gotta at least try it out. The games you mentioned will probably all be contenders though. I don't understand how GAF can continue to doubt Nintendo when all they do is win. WiiU was really the only big misstep in the whole history. GameCube only got dented because OG Xbox came out of left field and they were standing there without a DVD drive. It had a great chipset and an amazing software library. A more focused Mario entry and a DVD drive and that whole narrative changes quickly.

GOTY winner (one with most GOTY awards) will either be Mario Kart World, DK Bonanza, or Metroid Prime 4

The other two will get 2nd and 3rd place consensus

Has this ever happened before where a company dominates GOTY awards with 3 games?
GOTY will be Expedition 33. One of those 3 games will be nominated, along with Split Fiction and probably KCD2, but E33 will win

Just to clarify, the mc being a woman in this game will not stop me from being hyped for it and buying it. I think I'm above average on my GoT appreciation. Truly one of the most realized games of the past couple gens. Somehow Sucker Punch got it all the way to the shelf with the warm, beating heart intact. This just lowers the ceiling a bit and feels forced.

I know it won't beat feel good little indie developer teary eyes story (its also my GOTY so far so legit deserved..), but I know those games posted in OP will dominate my time for remaining of the year.

They got 33 problems to deal with.

Clair Obscur is already at the top for my GOTY personally and it's very hard to imagine seeing this changing. Can see DK and MP4 maybe being in one of the top 5 if all goes well but we shall see!

Do love the enthusiasm and passion people made here throughout, so you know from that alone gaming is gettng better 🙂

The OP speaks in past tense regarding something that's never gonna happen.

I would be shocked if any of those mobile games you mentioned even gets a nomination.

Reading this thread I wasn't aware how much peoples health and mental well-being depends on arbitary video gaming awards.

I doubt it. They're not going to give a shit about Kart or Metroid, and Astro Bot won last year so they probably won't give it to DK.

GOTY used to be a fun thing where people just talk about what their personal favorite thing is and you learn about new stuff from people. It's been a hellscape instead for some time pushing extreme conformity. If you enjoy it that's fine, but people get way too hung up on this stuff. So many games come out now that no one on here has played even close to all of them, and shrinking all the diverse genres down to just 1 at the top is usually reductive, inaccurate and pointless. When you look back at previous GOTY lists, very few people end up agreeing with it. It tends to favor mainstream stuff and is ultimately a popularity contest. 🤷‍♂️
Halo Infinite right now

Yeah, i do think it's metroid or dk that will win. expeditions 33 will end second.

Unless there must going to be something horrible wrong with those 2 games, it's a give that one of the 2 will win

Balder's Gate 3 did it better.

The benefit of being multiplatform reaching to a much larger userbase or something....

Did you play it through? Why not mention this in the OP? Obviously, it's most of GAF's GOTY. If you finished it, share your opinion about why the other 3 games are better.

no I didn't play it thru, only tried for a couple fights at my brother's place. I'm not a big fan of turn based mechanic. though I do see the appeal of the art style and the interesting mix of parry/counter in turn-based mechanic

My GOTY so far is Doom Dark Ages.

Personally I would like to see a healthy mix of games. Different people like different games and that should be reflected in GOTY awards. Some CODs and Borderlands should also win, if GOTY awards are to have some relevance.

When 1-2 game sweeps everything, it just feels like a nexus trying to get a few games become more successful.

Look, I'm willing to give you that Bonanza and Metroid Prime 4 could be GOTY contenders since they haven't came out yet, but MKW came out and was just good, not amazing. And that's okay, but the best award it can hope for this year is best family game.

  • Mario Kart World, most definitely not.
  • Donkey Kong, maybe. If it turns out to be pure platforming goodness like Super Mario Odyssey (same team, right?), then I can definitely see it being nominated. Winning it however, I don't expect it to.
  • Metroid Prime is always a GOTY contender, and 4 is most likely no exception. That being said, everything about it (while amazing) looks relatively iterative to the series and not something mindblowingly new.
Unless we have another Clair Obscur-like bolt from the blue, I don't think anything coming out this year has a big a chance as Expedition 33. It's a rare, almost once-in-a-generation kind of game that nails literally almost every aspect of a video game, it has both critical as well as fan support, it sells incredibly well, AND it's a first-time effort from a new studio. These conditions don't happen a lot, and I don't see anything else winning.
