Nintendo will dominate GOTY awards with 3 games; MK World, DK Bananza, and Metroid Prime 4. Has this ever happened before?

Listen, I love me some Nintendo games, but even as one of the most diehard Metroid fans on the planet I can't say with a straight face that Prime or any of those other Nintendo games stand a chance.

Fanboys of any corporation are insufferable, but y'all Nintendo cultists are the fucking worst lol.

And all y'all that are shitting on E33 would be nutting, pissing, shitting, vomiting all over the place for a new SMRPG and calling it GotG before it even released.

One thing to consider for those awards
Japan only represents around 0.05% of the weight because the website owner's selection (ResetEra) decided to ignore Japanese gaming media despite Japan being the second biggest market in the world for gaming.

Countries like Greece, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Turkey, etc., have more votes than Japan, lol.

There are many awards. Which one are you talking about?

Aggregate websites like the Gotypicks blog (he decided to cherry-pick Death Stranding awards while ignoring many awards for RE and Sekiro). He was called out later by many users there and didn't have any motivation left to run that website while goty.gamefa is a continuation that continues the cherry-pick tradition that left Japanese gaming websites and boards out of the vote count.

The second videogame market, with a huge difference over the next, is China. Korea is fourth. Are there many media from those countries in the awards?

What Japanese websites were left out? How many?

I don't think MKW will be got but come on meta critic is over. no one takes it seriously anymore.
Which is funny since the first Death Stranding has an 82 on Metacritic. If the second one has the same average, shouldn't it compete then?

People need to stop caring about the opinions of these "expert" journalists, including GOTY events as a whole, which are more of a popularity contest as someone commented here, not to mention all the money that goes on behind the scenes.

No way Mario Kart World will be a major contender outside of racing/family game categories.

I can't wait for Prime 4, and maybe they're hiding loads of stuff, but from what I've seen it looks like a very safe sequel. I doubt it'll make much of a splash despite being a great game.

DK Banaza looks very solid though, that has potential. We'll see.

COD wasn't the best seller of 2020.
Sales numbers offer a better metric than critics votes.

2017 = MK8D - 68 million units
2018 = RDR2 - 74 million units
2019 = COD MW - 41 million units
2020 = AC New Horizons - 47 million units
2021 = COD Vanguard - 30 million units
2022 = Elden Rings - 30 million units
2023 = Hogwarts Legacy - 34 million units
2024 = Black Myth Wukong - 25 million units

Most of those games didn't sell that many units during the year when they launched, which is when they would have been elegible for GOTY.
Even if COD wasn't the best selling game of 2020 (and I think it was, at least in the US), it is the best selling game most years. So you agree it should win most years?
Minecraft has sold over 300 millio units to day. So we agree it's exponentially better than literally any game Nintendo has ever made?

What about Tencent? Their games are so popular they made 27,3 billion USD in revenue from their online games alone in 2024, that's more than twice than what all of Nintendo did last year and like 70% more than what Nintendo made in their most successful year ever. So I guess we can all agree Tencent is a vastly superior publisher to Nintendo, right?

Mario Kart World is a massive disappointment. Be real. MP4 might have a chance, but there's no way it will reach the heights of the 1 & 2. DK Bonanza looks fun, but GOTY? c'mon.

E33 will rightfully get GOTY.

DK and MP4 aren't even out yet. Maybe they're bad? I don't think any of the games you mentioned has a shot at those shitty game awards.

Too similar to the first one.

I expect Hell is Us or Crimson Desert get a spot in that list, but 33 is my clear favorite.
For now it looks like Ex33, but I have a good feeling DS2 will be so epic this time that it might get that award for game of the year at game awards. Ds1 is always been divisive, even if its one of the best game of ps4 generation. But from first impressions of DS2, those who did not like Ds1 started to like Ds2. Looks like the best of Ds1 combine with some of MGS elements, with more options. Anyway this years nominees will surely be the best. My vote is for DS2.

OP u were doing so well with that initial headline before you went all 'nintendo will win goty over expedition 33'. An argument could be made that all 3 ninty games will be well represented at TGA but that ain't happening.
lmao. is this a sales thread or a goty thread? COD sells the most units every year. should it also win goty every year? how old are you? Serious question because you sound like the 12 year olds on system wars 25 years ago.

Cannot believe a remake puzzle shooter and a walking simulator were so close to beating the greatest meelee combat of all time at TGA

What? 🤣🤣🤣. Some of you really live in a bubble.
Its disappointing compared to 8. The open world is pointless as there really isn't any incentive to collect anything or do the P switches, as there isn't a viable reward for doing so. It's pointless, and clear that it was done as an afterthought.

Dude, play the game and then come back please… MK world is above MK8 in every single aspect, especially the multiplayer…

I've been playing it since launch day. Finished all the GP cups including mirror mode. Multiplayer is just chaos now because instead of just 6 players spamming the overpowered items, you now have 12. It's not fun, its just frustrating. But glad your enjoying it.

Do your commas not work or are you that winded after typing a few words?
yes it is a rant with dramatic fustrated suspense!.
You can also use an ellipsis for literary effect, to represent a dramatic pause or a thought that trails off. Sometimes, this type of ellipsis is also referred to as "suspension points."

and I am sorry if that's all you got from that. :messenger_grinning_squinting:

You can easily see that these people criticizing have no idea what they are talking about, they probably haven't seen anything about the game, much less played it.

You guys must really like stickers as rewards. I've discussed this in another thread already. The open world feels very much like an afterthought. Wouldn't it have been better if characters were locked behind challenges/races in the open world instead of stickers? or literally anything instead of shitty stickers.

It's a shame because they could have done so much more with it.

Man, I don't get this "no incentive" argument. The challenge itself is the incentive.

Imagine me saying that a classic like Street Fighter 2 is overwhelming because there is no incentive to play, since there are no unlockables or rewards, it doesn't make any sense, does it?

if you say that, you have to put up with the horde of Expedition 33 fans who don't understand anything other than that game being this year's GOTY.

I agree that it's an excellent game in any case, it's going to be a tough contest!

Fair enough, glad you are enjoying it.

I find it boring. As do others, different strokes and all that.

I'm not saying the game is bad, I'm saying that I am disappointed with it. There's fun to be had for sure, but not sure as hell not $80 worth, nor is it GOTY material imo.

I particularly don't care, but I guess the OP?
We will be happy if our favorite games succeed and win awards but what really matters is we will all enjoy this great games, whether this game will be commercial success or win tons of awards or not.

Sounds unlikely. I hear a lot of negative things about Mario Kart World. Donkey Kong looked interesting, but I'm not sure if the game will stay exciting for more than a few hours.

Metroid yes looks the the most interesting, but the competition is also very strong.

For whatever reason the press and by extension the fan boys who can't think for themselves have already crowned expedition 33 GOTY

Would love to see a turn based JRPG like lose though.

The gaming industry is in a really dire state if such uninspired, conceptually decrepit stuff gets even nominated 🤷‍♂️ :messenger_grinning_sweat:

So far Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 and Expedition 33 are in the best places, the year is still long though.

This GOTY talk is kind of meaningless in the overall picture, especially for Nintendo games, where Western critics always preferred Sony games for media awards.

In 2020, Animal Crossing: New Horizons should've won over TLOU Part 2, but sales metrics fortunately were there to tell the real story between those two games.

2020
TLOU part 2 - 10 million units
AC New Horizons - 47 million units

If sales are the gold standard of the "best game", well, we already have that metric. Why bother with critics at all?

The easiest example I can think of the disconnect between sales and critical acclaim would be the broken Pokemon games that they refused to make better because they continued to sell. Sonic was stuck in the same rut for a long time as well. In the realm of free games I'm pretty sure Candy Crush makes more than Halo Infinite but I'm not trying to present it as proof as some mistake. I'm not saying Animal Crossing was a bad game but I am saying sales can't be used as proof of game quality over another one.

Sandfall has fanboys? Like Pikmins? You can't be serious.

33 excels in every aspect, from story and gameplay to music. It's a generational game.

And even without that game, Crimson Desert is 3 generations ahead of anything Nintendo is releasing this year.

I mean, that's just silly to say. Crimson Desert I hope will be great but nothing is generations ahead of Nintendo 1st party when they try. E33 is a shoe in for goty this year but I would not be surprised to see the Donkey Kong game on the list. I'd be shocked if Crimson Desert is though. Other companies celebrate 87s, Nintendo gamers celebrate 97s.

...and just in case you want to tell me a conspiracy theory about metacritic review scores, please don't. There is no measurable metric you can point to that makes me believe Nintendo doesn't make the best software of any publisher, and that includes all reviews, user, critic, any website, sales, views, profit, general popularity, having random people ID mascots on the street, ect. Nothing exists that points to Nintendo being anything but a top software dev. Ironically, this continuous praise is why those on the outside looking in hold them in contempt. Nintendo is the pretty, successful sibling. Mom's favorite. It has the biggest hater group on the internet. Just that fact points to their success.
