the latest nvidia drivers (beta) really smooth performance on JC2 on my system.

my framerate hovers between 45-60fps (v-sync'ed, of course) on an overclocked 1GB GTX460 paired with a 2500K at 4.3ghz.

honestly, i think even with that quad core you're still processor-limited in those games. my previous system had the same overclocked GTX460 but with a Q6600 at 3.3ghz. it's a bit odd how you're only seeing 30fps on TF2, though.

I previously posted about how I wasn't getting ideal performance out of JC2. With everything maxed, I was getting about 30fps in most situations with a GTX 460. It seemed I was being cpu limited, as I was getting similar benchmark results regardless of resolution and settings.

So, I bought a new proc, this, and got around to installing it today. The problem is, i'm not really seeing much better results in JC2 or any other game i've tried. In JC2 i'm only getting about a 10-15fps performance increase in most situations, and in some the game still hovers around 30. Same thing with TF2 and The Witcher.

I just want to understand if these kinds of results are to be expected? I know I purchased a lower end proc, but I guess I was expecting better results jumping from my 4.5 year old dual core to a modern quad core. Could there theoretically be anything else causing issues?\

Which version of the 460 do you have? The 768MB, 1GB SE, or 1GB version?

What resolution? Since GTX460 is a budget card that's your bottleneck if you want any higher fps.

I like my HP tm2t for someone who wants a keyboard on their tablet (screen twists and lies flat). I can't stand typing on a big touchscreen. Plus it has switchable graphics if you do want to play some games. It gets 4hrs+ battery life also. It does weigh a pound or so more than the Asus though. Cost me <$800 back in November.
The HP weighs 4.72lbs vs Asus EP121 2.5lbs. The negatives I read are it's kinda sluggish (5400RPM? HDD) and bad viewing angles (TN panel?). The EP121 is very responsive (60GB SSD) and has a great screen (IPS panel). The HP graphics, with ATI discrete GPU, handly beats the EP121 intergrated Intel GPU though.

I'm not seeing 30fps in TF2, i'm seeing similar performance gains (10-15fps). TF2 is usually above 60 but it does tank when the action heats up.

You're seeing higher performance, but that performance is limited, and in some cases is the same as before. This just means that the bolleneck has shifted from the CPU to the GPU.

JC2 maxed out is fairly demanding. It takes roughly a 6950/570 to get a full 60fps out of it at 1080p.

It should have installed nvidia control panel with your drivers. Right click the desktop and select control panel, then v-sync is in 3D settings.

Or get nvidia inspector.

Ah thanks.

I just thought I would be able to reach 60 since i'm only playing at 720p, but it's at least good to know there's probably not another part of the build holding things up.

Well here's a benchie at 1680*1050. I forgot you were gaming at 720p...I would think you should be hitting 60fps...odd.

HD6900-61.jpg

The GTX 460 would be a little lower than the 5850 on that chart (maybe 10% lower). But since you're gaming at 720p, which only has about 55% the pixel count of 1680*1050, you should be definitely getting 60fps according to that...hmmm.

You sure you're on the newest video drivers? I remember NVidia had pretty sluggish performance compared to AMD a while back in JC2, but according to that bench above, it seems like they must have fixed it somewhere down the line.

Hmmm yeah it still looks like I should be getting better performance than I am. The only thing I could think of that may be an issue is the HDD.

The framerate takes the highest dive in JC2 whenever i'm entering an area with structures as opposed to terrain, and New Vegas hitches just as bad when loading in new chunks as it does on the Xbox.

edit: im running with 2x AA, it wouldn't make that much of a difference, would it? But i'm on the latest stable drivers, from January.

Yeah playing streaming games on a HDD you can expect hitching when you enter a new area. Still, that should disappear very quickly, within a second or two I would think.

edit: the best advice I can give is just to play around with the video settings a bit.

They are talking about free. You need to pay for NOD32. And my experience from using most of the highly rated ones, there is no best. They all will miss something. Right now, I am using Norton Security Suite, fast and doesn't bother you with alerts. But, free is your only option, Microsoft Essentials is the "best".

I need a suggestion. My brother has a four-year-old PC. The integrated graphics are not working well with his HDTV on VGA, and there is no other output. What would be a good card with DVI/HDMI and a low power requirement at a low price (about $30)? He doesn't game so that doesn't matter.

I just honestly haven't had a virus in a good 4 or 5 years...basically ever since I stopped pirating and opening stuff I shouldn't. Obviously, it's still possible to get a virus if it's through an exploit, but you're relatively safe if you're moderately cautious.

To be honest, I just haven't gotten around to installing an anti-virus yet. I kind of forgot. Last, I used Avira, but it was annoying with its daily popup. I want something completely unintrusive.

Most of the time it's not viruses that people get, it's malware. They go to a site saying "Optimize your PC now" and click next -> next -> next on every install screen they see. If you do that, it's a sure fire way to get bloatware and malware.

You guys seem to be forgetting about the increasing hacks and exploits that legit sites and services are falling victim to and passing them on to users/visitors.

same, i removed security essentials a while back. if you dont pirate stuff, open dodgy email attachments or click ok on those pop up sites chances of you getting a trojan are slim.

Maybe a 210.
Any card will do it if it has the outputs though.

I was using Avira (still am) and they updated it so that the pop up almost never comes up.
Actually it might be completely off, I can't remember the last time it popped up.

You could if you want to.
I wouldn't want the added noise, heat, and power consumption for something so small though.

It's RAM so 'best' performance is negligible in just about everything.

Choose based on looks if everything is about the same price.
I'm partial to G.Skill since their sticks have lifetime warranty and they support eSports.

^ Yeah, I honestly don't find PhysX worth it. Even with my SLI setup, I don't bother to turn it on. The only game where it looks kind of nice is Mirror's Edge.

Well there's no harm in having an anti-virus on as well. I'm just not sure what to recommend.

Really though, there's no better alternative than to just be careful, and when you install stuff, make sure you don't check stuff like "INSTALL ALAZAKAM TOOLBAR NOW".

Anyways, vsync and tripple buffering increased my fps by 10-15 and made is smooth like butter.

I have been using MSE with Spybot in the background, quite successfully for a good couple of years now. Have CCleaner installed for the cleanups, that's about it.

for a dedicated physx card, i've heard that nvidia recommend no less than a card with 1/2 the shaders of your primary card.

i tried an 8800GT with a GTX460 and it was a waste of time.

That's a possibility.
Both titles have had issues with Nividia cards. You can search around for GTX 460 problems with New Vegas. Here's a link to get you started:
http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=183416

Still, in the case of Just Cause 2, it seems you've gone up from ~36fps to ~45-50fps on average, no? That's a healthy increase, despite still present limitations (like CPU).

I am a little confused about the future Intel roadmap.

As I understand it, they will release a Core i7-995X Extreme Edition in Q3 2011 (6-core) but what about 8-cores of the Sandy Bridge variety? Anybody have any info?

Some of us need many cores and the Xeon are getting a 10-core, but I would prefer a non-server setup.

And what the fuck is with the 16GB RAM limit on the current motherboards for Sandy Bridge CPUs? Weak.

Should see enthusiast CPUs at the end of the year. If you really need the cores for production work you should look at the new westmere processors. Server grade parts may be what you need as the the SB-EN parts are only going to be 8 core not 10 core.

Everything is from amazon since Newegg is retarded and doesn't like my money. (VISA + International Bank). Any other online-trusted-non retarded vendor suggestion is welcome!

Oh and yeah, I'm having some serious doubts about the build: do I really need windows 7 pro?, is GTX 570 really worthy? (from a cost/performance perspective)

Edit: fuck my whole previous post. Yeah sure Pro is fine but Home Premium is fine too, don't think it will make much difference

For gaming, the GPU is the most important thing so basically go with the most powerful GPU that you can get with the money you are willing to spend.
