How are the Crucial SSD drives that are for sale on NewEgg? Should I opt for OCZ or Intel instead?

They are good but last generation drives. The OCZ and Intel drives will perform better but the Crucial is no slouch.

So looks like in early June or so, I'll finally be building a PC. Having never constructed one before, I know next to nothing so please try to bear with my neophyte questions:

The $600 build in the OP looks attractive, will the GTX 460 be a capable card over the next few years though? I was thinking about maybe putting in the GTX 560 to give it a little bit more oomph, my monitor's native res is 1680 x 1050 for what it's worth. Also I think I'll swap out the Phenom for the i5 2500k. Would the i5 and GTX 560 fit work with the motherboard listed in the $600 build or with those necessitate and upgrade? Thanks.

Cool. I'm picking one up then. Pretty good deal price wise.

I got the 64GB C300 way back when for about 150 bucks when it first came out. 200 bucks for twice the space is a great deal.

I love it btw.

$600 build is based on AMD, and the i5 2500k does not work on that architecture. You'll have to get a different mobo as well. The 560 will be fine.

For 2500k people, what voltages do you have on your overclocks? I just got my system running today, over locked it to 4.5 with a voltage of 1.25 made it blue screen in prime95, so I upped it to 1.26 and it seems fine now, temps fluctuate between 59-61C. Does that sound about right? I thought I would have to dabble with the voltage a lot more than that.

Haven't touched mine at all, haven't needed to

So would I have to spring for the $190 mobo featured in the $1000 build, are there cheaper alternatives?

has anyone gone from a vertex 2 to a vertex 3 and noticed any huge real life performance difference? I picked up a vertex 2 120GB earlier this month. but after seeing benchies score almost doubling, i am thinking of picking up a newer vertex 3. will the speed bump be noticeable in everyday use?

Do you feel like your programs could open up any faster? (probably not)

In games though, there would be a difference in loading times.

after using the drive for about 2 - 2 1/2 weeks now, i find myself still amazed by how fast my apps and games load. Another thought was to pick up anther vertex2 120 and use a raid-0 to get a lil bit of performance boost.

No.

I went from an Intel 80GB to a Vertex 3, and I didn't notice a huge difference. I didn't expect to either. I might notice a difference in terms of big sequential game loading, but that's about it.

Alright, so I'm planning on building a new pc for the first time in over 5 years. I'm trying to keep it down to around $700. Here's what I'm thinking about getting.

Intel Core i5 Processor i5-2500 3.3GHz 6MB LGA1155 CPU $209.99

GIGABYTE Socket 1155/Intel H67/DDR3/CrossFireX/SATA3/A&GbE/Micro ATX Motherboard GA-H67M-D2-B3 $101.94

Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 SATA 6Gb/s 1 TB Internal Hard Drive with 32MB Cache (ST31000524AS) $64.63

Corsair CMPSU-650TX 650-Watt TX Series 80 Plus Certified Power Supply $89.99

GAMMA Classic Series ATX Mid Tower Interior Steel Chassis (Black) $39.99

Corsair Vengeance Blu 4 GB PC3-12800 1600mHz DDR3 240-Pin SDRAM Memory Kit for Intel and AMD Platforms - Not a Kit (Single) CMZ4GX3M1A1600C9B $49.99

XFX Radeon HD 5850 1GB GDDR5 PCIe w/EyeFinity $149.99

Total: $706.52

Would I be better off going for a 2x2GB memory kit instead of the single 4gb card? I figured it would be better to get a single if I'm interested in upgrading to 8 or even 16gb in the future. Also, if I wanted to eventually get another 5850 and run Crossfire, would that power supply be enough?

I'm still not completely sold on the GPU yet. I'm looking at either the gtx460, 5850 or maybe 6850. I was checking out the tomshardware gpu index and it looks like the 5850 performs about the same as the gtx460, and can be found for a bit cheaper.

Looks rad man, I'm actually building almost the same exact system for a friend of mine in a week. Might I suggest the 6870 instead for a vid card.

Regarding RAM, I doubt you'll ever (in the life of this computer) need 16GB unless you are doing some crazy photo/video stuff.

Looks ok, but like other guy said get a 6xxx series might be better, also single/dual difference is laughable at best so go with whatever you preffer. and also 650w may be a bit on the short side for a xfire setup

There's plenty of alternatives. Are you planning on OC? If not, the H67 models are cheaper. Can get something in between 100-150. You can also go with a P67 Micro, that will be cheaper if you don't care about some of the features.

5850 at $150 is an amazing deal. He should stick with that.

The 2500k build would be
ASUS P8P67 (regular not deluxe, pro, evo or LE)
GTX560
2500K
~550-600 Watt PSU
Cooler Master Hyper 212+
1TB Samsung F3 Spinpoint
4GB Corsair/G.Skill 1333 RAM (8GB if its in your budget)
SSD (if its in your budget)

Don't get a H67 mobo with a 2500K. If you want to go cheaper buy a non K series cpu and H67 mobo.

evga x58 mobo

80GB Intel 320. Its $160 on newegg right now but worth the extra $10.

First step in building my new scratch built system. Got the I/O Shield cut out, and the mobo assembled.

2lutd39.jpg

AMD 965 BE
Sapphire itx 785g mobo
2x2 GB G-Skill Ripjaws (had to remove the "heat spreaders", they are worthless BTW, no copper)
Corsair F90 90GB SSD
Shuttle 500w PSU
(not pictured) Sapphire 6870

Going to line the whole thing in thin anodized aluminum.

For reference, the whole thing is going to be in this case:

Depends on which 6xxx series.

The 6850 is not the replacement for the 5850, the only way I would recommend going to the next series is if you went to the 6950.

Since you're getting a CM 212+ and a 2500k, I'm assuming you're interested in overclocking that CPU... so don't get the P8P67 LE for your mobo, get the regular P8P67 or Pro instead. The LE is considerably worse at OCing than any other P8P67 board.

Before the next PDX LAN at least, which is in July. Could do the majority of it in a week, but it's looking like we're going to need to have our aluminum lining custom made and anodized, which is going to be expensive.

Basically we need to cut holes for two switches and HDD indicator, create a support bracket to mount the 6870 parallel to the mobo (using a PCI-E riser), mount the mobo cut holes for a 80mm fan, 40mm fan, cut to size and re-sleeve all of the cables, and install some feet. Shouldn't be too difficult. The only tricky part is cutting/grinding so it looks even and nice.

So I've got a 2600K with stock cooling. What's the most idiot proof and stable way for me to overclock a bit? I'm not trying to go extreme, more for something in the 3.6-4.0 Ghz range.

Idiot proof and stable aren't usually the same thing.

Some google-fu gave me this.

12377 SEK - 2 023 USD. Ouch. Sweden isn't the best country for electronic purchases. Can't wait though!

What would I pay for this thing in the US?

I can tell you a 2500k would run about $225 USD.

And, 8 GB RAM would be around $100, if not a bit under.

So what ever happened to the Vertex 3 starting at $250? Was the price impacted by the events in Japan that hurt the memory market? I was waiting on its release and I finally remember to check if it was out and now its at $308 on Amazon, $299 on NewEgg etc...

Also, any recommendations for someone's first SSD? I am looking at a $200 budget, but options above that are helpful. If there is something cheaper than $200 but gives excellent performance, that is also appreciated!

Are SSD's worth the investment right now? I've been doing some research on them and there seems to be a lot of reviews with high failure rates after a week to a few months down the road. It's not just from suspect companies either. Corsair, OCZ, Kingston... they've all got their fair share of busted SSD's.

This doesn't feel like a too distant choice right now.

pfeeh! Americans... they don't get candy in the boxes that come from the stores.

( because you sure as hell better be ordering from inet.se and use the free sweclockers shipping dealy )

For some stupid ass reason, my computer won't connect to my wireless at completely random times.

Some times it works, some times it doesn't. When it doesn't I tries to connect with it failing and a gold star icon appearing by the wireless bars. I try resetting the modem, moving the USB Adapter, everything and it still doesn't work.

Can somebody help me please?

Probably interferrng with other wireless devices. Try changing the operating bandwidth.

Are you letting Windows control your wireless connection?

What kind of adapter and what kind of router do you have? Do you have the newest firmware for both?

Is it possible you are too far away from your router?

No, I bought one and it might not be money thrown away I feel that I could have put those £100 to better use. Windows loads pretty quick though :)

What reviews have you been reading? I've got 4 OCZs and 1 Corsair F90, not a single failure yet. They have the same failure rates as mechanical drives. Sounds like you are coming across anecdotes on forums which end up being forefront rather than the 100s of people who aren't posting because their SSDs are still working.

No the router is three feet away. And yes Windows in controlling the connection. It is a Rosewill adapter.

1. If it's three feet away, why don't you just go wired? So much better.

2. You need to log into your router. Probably something like 192.168.0.1 or .1.1 or something like that. Check your manual. Enter the password, go into your wireless settings. Change the bandwidth setting. Basically, RTFM. Depends entirely on your brand what the address and password is.

This is old, but I don't know if it has been discussed in here over the last few days. Posting the claims just for consideration.

OCZ - The Master of SSD (Shady, Suspect, Deceitful)
http://seekingalpha.com/instablog/8...ocz-the-master-of-ssd-shady-suspect-deceitful

Read that earlier as I'm an investor in OCZ and I think most of the allegations are unfounded. I was really bothered by the calling out of the CEO's criminal record; just because he has made mistakes in the past does not mean he isn't a capable executive and that has no baring on the accusations made against OCZ. The 34nm to 25nm was a deceitful move but a business decision that is dictated by the RAM available from the fabs. They also have openly recognized the customers discontent and have an exchange program in place and are making new SKU names to reflect the fab process of the RAM. The IP change of the neural game devices is really irrelevant as they don't manufacture it anymore and the IP isn't worth all that much. Comparing it to STEC?? I've never even heard of STEC and they don't sell any consumer ssds. Not to mention OCZ uses sandforce and does not develop its own controllers or memory so its claims that R&D are too low are quite frankly stupid. The triple capacity allegations don't hold either because OCZ doesn't won any fabs and outsources manufacturing. I could good go on but I think this is enough to show my opinion, yes I'm biased because I'm an investor but this is my 2 cents on that article.
