For anyone that remembers me from the console and PC thread currently going on, just to let you guys know I'm gonna be raising money this summer to pay for a PC before BF3 comes out. I built my first and only gaming PC for BF2 so it seems right to return now. Will be watching this thread over the coming months for ideas but I've already decided on a GTX580, should be a decent price in September.

Why September! that month should is dedicated for your hopes for something else which will never be :D
Haha, no that's August.

I want my PC for Battlefield 3 primarily, that gives me the summer to save up some cash and let prices fall a bit.

I don't want to spend 800.

I gave him a range of 600-800, hoping he'd lean more towards 700, and budgeting some money for shipping.

Dude in what part of the world are you ? im gonna rip out my X4 945 very soon and you can have it for very little cash almost free-ish....

what are some of the sound cards you guys have?

im looking to get this one:

will i notice a lot of difference?

Well, i bought an X-Fi Xtreme Music a few years back, and to be honest i was kinda underwhelmed (considering we use normal pc speakersets, not super high end audio stuff). I could hardly notice any difference between my mobo soundcard and the X-Fi...but maybe its just me...

Most of the parts look solid. However, it'd be best to save him some money by:

1) Buying Windows 7 OEM instead of that package deal and get a cheaper case

Windows 7 OEM ($99)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...86&cm_re=windows_7_oem-_-32-116-986-_-Product

Antec 300 Illusion ($59)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...129066&cm_re=antec_300-_-11-129-066-_-Product

2) Take that SSD out unless you are trying to save a few seconds on boot-up. I have that Samsung F3 and it is plenty fast. I'd wait a year or two for SSDs to drop in price before grabbing one since you will be paying such a premium.

and streamlining a bit by:

3) Going for a Blu-Ray Burner instead of a separate Blu-Ray player/CD-DVD Burner. It will end up costing you only $10 extra as well as having less to hook to the power supply ($99):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...6&cm_re=blu_ray_burner-_-27-106-346-_-Product
Thanks for the reply, but i've already pulled the trigger for the parts. But

1) I chose Windows 7 Pro over Home Edition, which is why the price is higher. It's also OEM as well as part of a combo which shed of some of the extra cost.

2) I mainly put on the SSD for boot-ups as well as for some programs he will be using. From what he's described, they are the music equivalent to Maya and Photoshop programs. So i figured this will help improve the speed of those particular programs.

3) I chose separate drive mainly for speed issues. I'm under the impression that Bluray burners aren't as fast as their DVD counterparts for burning DVDs, which is what he will do a lot.

I could have picked another case as well, get a school copy of 7, and wait for sales on particular parts but time is also an issue and he would like this before the end of the month. :(

Thanks anyways!

If I'm running all my games at 1280 x 1024 is there a point in buying a really expensive card? Or is there a really good one that would hit the sweet spot for that resolution at a good price. I've been riding out my 8800 GT for a long time now.

I'm tired of my mom calling me with computer issues so I'm thinking of using Remote Desktop (or something similar) to troubleshoot from the comfort of my home. She uses XP and I'm on W7.

Do you guys have any tips or advice to share?

Heard logmein is a great way to do this

Yeah I probably will be overclocking; I'll check that cooler out, thanks.

I'm also thinking about switching the CPU from i7 to i5, looking at the benchmarks and considering that gaming is my primary activity (with 3D work behind that), I think an i5 2500K 3.30GHz will serve me just as well at about a hundred less. Is that right?

Similarly thinking about going from the GTX 580 to a GTX 560Ti on the GPU side; basically I'm trying to cut costs where I can in order to justify getting an SSD, as I think the gains the SSD would provide outweigh the gains to be had from the jump to a 580. This is based on anecdotal evidence so if I'm wrong please correct me!?

If gaming is your primary then yeah...a i5 will be just fine. Although I wonder if the hyper threading of the i7 would come in handy for your 3D work? On the gaming side though there won't be much difference.

If you drop to a i5 and even a drop from a 580 to a 570 is about a $150 difference...that's $250 right there enough for your SSD. SSD is absolutely worth it IMO.

No. I'm not too familiar with the cheaper offerings from AMD and Nvidia, but pretty much any card in 2011 will destroy that 8800GT a couple times over.

What do you consider really expensive? A 460 768MB would probably be adequate for that and you can get one for a little over $100 after rebates.

I was looking at the 460's, 5770 ati or gtx 550. I want to spend like 100-150. Expensive to me is like 250+ on a video card. I doubt I need that.

I used some compressed air on my keyboard today, damn thing types like it was fresh out of the packet now, whatever shit was behind those keys is gone.

I sprayed it on my desk fully for a second also and it made ice, was awesome.

Hey guys

I'm probably not going to upgrade my PC this year, but I'm thinking about doing it next year

This is my rig right now

INTEL CORE 2 DUO S775 3.0GHz E8400 45nm
ASUS MAXIMUS FORMULA
SAPPHIRE PCI-EX 2.0 RADEON HD4870 512MB GDDR5
OCZ 2048MB (1024MBX2) DDR2 800 CL 4-4-4-15 - REAPER HPC : OCZ2RPR8002GK
ANTEC NINE HUNDRED
CORSAIR 650W TX : CMPSU-650TX
THERMALRIGHT ULTRA 120 EXTREME
SCYTHE S-FLEX 120mm SFF21E

I thinking of upgrading instead of building a whole new system

The things I would need are - New Motherboard (For the new CPU), CPU and GPU

My questions are :

1. Could I still use my ANTEC 900
2. Could that power supply hold the new type of motherboards, Core i7 and some of the stronger GPUs currently on the market? Obviously next year we'll have stronger and more power hungry GPUs, so it will need to be able to supply an even stronger GPU, because I'll probably won't buy a year old GPU
3. Could I still use the THERMALRIGHT ULTRA 120 EXTREME with Core i7?
4. Would you recommend adding more RAM?

When I think about it, buying a new Motherboard, CPU and GPU is almost buying a whole new rig :)

I need some help choosing on a motherboard.

I'm either going to go with the ASUS P67 PRO or the Sabertooth. They are 150 euros and 160 euros so price isn't really the issue. I just want the "best", secure and reliable. Im going to get a GTX 580 DCUII and I'm also considering a soundcard, though would I get a lot out of that if I'm only going to use headphones/headset ( Grado SR 60/Gamecom 367)

thanks!

One of these is probably the best bet.

GTX460 768MB ($120 after rebate)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121390

GTX460 1GB ($140 after rebate)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130571

The GTX550 is actually weaker than both (slightly worse than the 768MB model), and the 5770 is the weakest of the bunch.

Yes, the Antec 900 is a decent case that you could reuse to save some money.
Yes, your PSU is great and there's no reason not to reuse it.
I think you need a Socket 1156 adapter (even if you get a 1155 board, the holes are the same). But yes, with that it will work with current CPU sockets, I don't know about Socket 2011 though.
Yes, your new board will require DDR3 anyway so you will need all new RAM. Get 2x2 for 4GB.

How does that look

I'm not good at building a PC. I just took every recommendation I got and mixed them together with comparing price with cost.
That wish list shows up as empty for me.

However, I did build you something. I had to skimp on the monitor a little and it's still over $700, but it leaves room for shipping and tax. $735.93:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.648133
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.620462
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231179

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148395

If that's still too expensive we could go with a processor that isn't as good. However that build gives you room for crossfire and additional memory expansion if so you choose.

I may end up taking the HDD up to 1tb and making the monitor a little bigger and settling for 800.

Thanks

EDIT: I added everything to my cart, plus picked out a 1tb HDD and a new monitor and I only got $660.83 as a total.

EDIT2: Where's the graphics card?

Unless it's one of those :x

$660.83 is definitely something I can get behind.

That graphics card doesn't say I get a game with it
Are you sure you're clicking the right link?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.620462

That should take you to the page with the GPU/game combo.

Here's a screenshot of what it looks like in-cart:

Doh, I had forgotten to add it to the cart

It's now 800 dollars

Eh... it's kind of a lot, but I think it'll do. It's cheaper than the laptop I bought 2 years ago that is now outdated already :/

It looks like it'll last a good 3 or 4 years also, and looks easily upgradeable, so it's more of an investment.

Since you'll likely be running at 1280x1024, I can safely say that the GTX 580 would literally rip apart ANYTHING you threw at it for at least the next year or so at max settings with 8xAA and 16xAF.

If you can spare the extra $20 (extra $10 if you use that code), I would definitely get the 6870 that RoboShump linked.

Laptops are definitely not suited to gaming. The price/performance ratio is downright terrible when compared to almost all desktop builds.

Definitely. That instant $40 off is amazing.

Compare the non-overclocked 6870 to the overclocked 6850 (or better yet, the non-overclocked one).

Syphon Filter said:
Is that limited or i can use that code anytime?
I would imagine that it applies to the first purchase you make on a new account, and that's it.

hey guys,

I installed windows 7 on ssd and I enabled ahci. So, what are the tweaks I can do for the ssd? and how can I manage to put my games on the HDD? and which is better downloading INF from Intel site (latest) or motherboard manufacture site (older)?

I'm not quite sure what you mean. You would just install games onto the drive letter that designates your SSD. As for tweaks, I don't really know what to tell you. I'm pretty sure you aren't going to need to tweak an SSD, really. It's already stupid-fast, I'm not sure there much you could do to improve it outside of putting it into a RAID array.

Do I need any cables at all?
If you are buying open box you will likely need cables, just in case your product doesn't come packaged with them. You can get a DVI cable for cheap here:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...816011&cm_re=dvi_cable-_-12-816-011-_-Product

Power cord - for monitors only, not rated high enough for use with a PSU:

It was weird, the regular sealed box was the same price as open box.
Open box 20 dollars shipping
New box: Free shipping

And open box is a 20 dollar savings

I ended up finding a monitor for 10 dollars cheaper anyway :p

I'm having a really odd problem. I mentioned earlier I have a modular PSU, and lost all the cables. Where can I find a replacement SATA power cable? Everything I see online is an adapter for older configurations. I just need a cable that goes from the 5v on the PSU to the HDD
Which brand and model do you have? It sounds like you may have picked up some replacement cables already. Which ones?

I bought this a while ago, but for anyone considering a data drive, I wanted to say that I'm very happy with my 2TB Caviar Green. It is pretty much silent, unlike the simply ridiculously loud Caviar Black, runs cool (not really a concern for either drive), and is actually damned fast, coming fairly close to my 1TB Black when it comes to loading games, anyway. I believe this is because of the great platter density of the 2GB model. The other thing I like is that it comes out of idle almost immediately. With the Black, when I was going to download something, even on my SSD, it would often spin up, freezing the window for 2-4 seconds, which was pretty annoying. So it seems like a pretty good compliment to an SSD.
