You'd save a bunch going with an i5-2500k instead of the i7-2600k. Should put you well in budget.

Note - See if there's a Microcenter around you because they have some slick Sandy Bridge CPU & MB deals going on.

This is what I've came up with so far. I'm a little over budget ($960), is there anywhere I could cut back without dropping the Sandy Bridge? If I could shave off $100 or so, I would be set.

You could drop down to a 2500K to save about $105. Otherwise, you could drop down to 4GB of ram for about $50. That's $30 off. Then try to find a GTX 460 in the $170-$180 range. So that gets you about half way there. Not sure where to shave off the other half...

OK, I didn't even think about that. Now it's down to $844, that's better.

Where would I be without you guys...I'd probably end up buying a computer from Best Buy or something.

So i finally got some cash. I was thinking about picking up a PC last fall but I didn't have the bones for it. Anyways here is what I currently have in my NCIX cart.

Currently Own a 20" LG Monitor Max R is 1900x1080

Grand Total: $935.00

Overclocking: No

Budget: $900-1100 in canadian funds

Monitor Resolution: Ideally 1900x1080 but lower if it requires a smooth gaming experience.

Main use: lots of Gaming

Games I want to play on high (if possible max) settings are CIV 5, Mass Effect 2/3, Battlefield Bad Company 2, Starcraft 2. Future games I want to play at least on medium settings include Skyrim and Portal 2.

Upgrading: Yes, i may pick up another graphics card for crossfiring and more memory etc.

Other Questions: Is there a difference between Sata 2-3 Hard Drives?

Is a 550 watt power supply good enough for this current build? What if I add another video card and/or memory?

Is my current motherboard good for upgrading? Could I get away with a cheaper model?

More fans on a computer case the better? Is air flow really all that important?

This will be the first PC i've ever built, so i'd really appreciate any advice you guys may have for me.

Thanks

We're going to start sounding like a broken record here but at this point there's really no reason to recommend anything but one of the new Intel Sandy Bridge chips for a primarily gaming based system. Replace your CPU with an i5 2500, your mobo with a P67 based board and I would also say a Radeon 6950 would be a better performer at about the same price point.

You don't need to go overboard on fans if you aren't overclocking. Pick a case with good airflow and you should be good to go.

Why is everyone recommending a 2500 as opposed to a 2600?
I probably won't overclock. But I want a system that lasts a good while. I'm not planning on upgrades outside of Ram, HDD and maybe GPU.

Ikuu

Had his dog run over by Blizzard's CEO
It's like £100 more and you don't get that much of a performance increase, and I really don't understand why people wouldn't overclock.

Is there any word on when there will Radeon 6900 series cards with non-reference coolers? I think the 6900 cards would fit me better than the GTX 570, but I like quiet computing and it sounds like the 6900 reference cooler is loud. I use a modified Antec Solo (midtower case) and don't want a full tower so I don't have the greatest airflow.

To overclock these, you don't need to do anything other than to select on option in your mobo's bios (or UEFI) and you can get a nice overclock without doing any work yourself.

I'm not entirely sure what this means.
AM3 and 1155 are socket types.

You need to match processors with the appropriate sockets.

When you search through newegg for a motherboard, you can select the socket type on the left side.

I'll have to order those as well, but I'll save that for last. Will I need to buy power cables and stuff? I also hope to run it to my monitor through HDMI.

This is my first time building a PC so any criticisms/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Also, did I go overkill on the PSU? Newegg suggested something around 450W.

And I think I should have enough cables? The mobo came with 2 SATA 3.0Gb/s cables which should hook up the HDD and optic drive. If I'm wrong about that, let me know :lol

I get overwhelmed easily and this build is killing me. Just want it done as this point :(

@Snuggler: Are you planning on overclocking...like a huge bunch?

It seemed as though people were getting pretty good results with the stock cooler with the 2500K

Well here's the final build. I'm just waiting on my mobo and cpu (the snowstorm in the south is causing shipping delays) and I can put it all together.

CPU - i5 2500k ($224 Newegg)
HSF - Noctua NH-U12P SE2 ($75 Amazon)
Mobo - Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD4 ($176 Superbiiz)
RAM - G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3-1600 2GBx2 ($59 Newegg)
VGA - Gigabyte Radeon 6970 ($369 Newegg)
SSD - Intel X-25M G2 120GB ($199 w/ $35 MIR Newegg)
HDD - Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 1TB ($49 combo deal with SSD Newegg)
DVD - Samsung SuperMulti Sata 22X Lightscribe DVDRW ($18 Amazon)
PSU - Corsair 650HX Modular 650w ($119 w/ $15 MIR Newegg)
CAS - Silverstone Raven RV-02BW ($159 w/ $20 MIR Amazon)

Reusing Razer BlackWidow Ultimate keyboard, Razer DeathAdder mouse, Razer Goliathus speed pad, Samsung 32" HDTV and Onkyo 5.1 Surround Sound system.

Needless to say I'm more than a little excited to get this baby up and going.

You might have so grab an HDMI cable if you don't have one. Pretty sure the graphics card won't come with one IIRC.

As far as the power cables, etc. Those will come with the power supply.

Just ordered the new i7 and I'm hating the fact I have to pay to overclock. But at least I'll be able to play some of my more CPU intensive games because I'm not on an old Core 2 Duo from 2006.

I had to look that up on Wikipedia, but I don't think I'll be that ambitious when I first put this thing together. I just want to play games in a higher resolution and frame rate than I am on my consoles. I don't think I want do to any overclocking, though.

Just an F.Y.I. Did some checking and a AMD 6950 will NOT fit into a Antec 300. Max Card length on a Antec 300 is 11"

#1 Bump that Fermi to 1GB. You can get a cheaper one that's 1GB if you sacrifice a few Mhz.

#2 Skip that heatsink. You won't need it for a while as the 2500k can O.C. to 4.4Ghz with the stock fan. Hold off on that until you need it.

WD Blues are not the best choice for an OS drive. You should consider going with a WD Black or Samsung equivalent. That motherboard you have will not allow you to overclock. Since you are getting a discreet GPU, plus a mid-tower, you may as well pick up a P67 ATX board.

It's Professional at my school and I assume everywhere else since that's what every college I've been to uses. Ultimate is the same thing as Professional, only with Microsoft's stupid anti-virus thing. That is not worth the $15 premium.

Mostly whether or not they are quality. I don't care if they overpriced or anything like that.

If you have a valid university email address, Microsoft lets you order Win7 for free. The uni isn't giving it out.

Yeah I purchased it from Microsoft with my university email address. I'm only guessing they give it free to US students.

Do you have a link for that? I got it for $30 for pro when it released, I did not hear they were giving it away for free.

Socket 2011 will likely come out late Q3 2011.
500W is enough, the 750W is just there to enable xfire later on as an option.

What advantages will it offer? I guess this is probably a good time to ask what I should look for when selecting a motherboard. With basically every other part I know what specs to look up to figure out how good it is, but with motherboards, after checking to make sure it's compatible with my other parts I really don't know what else to look for. I ended up picking the one I did simply because it had an HDMI port.

Building a computer for my parents since their current computer is a 1.6ghz hp lump of shit full of dog hair.

This sound alright for browsing the web and being a bit future proof? Maybe running Real Flight G5?

Intel i3-540 $114
Corsair XMS3 4GB 2 X 2 GB PC3-10666 1333Mhz DC DDR3 $45
Thermaltake TR2 Series 430W Power Supply with 2 Fans $41
Samsung Internal Half Height DVD-W Supermulti SATA 22X $18
ASUS LGA 1156/ Intel H55/ DDR3 2133OC- mATX Motherboard P7H55-M Pro $100
Cooler Master RC-310-BWN1-GP Elite 310 ATX, MATX Mid Tower $39
Samsung Spinpoint f3 $60

windows 7 - but they have it already (family pack)

total - $417 - all from amazon

This look like a decent living room pc to get wifi and browse the web with some quickness? Better options I am not seeing available from amazon? Possibly microcenter (denver) - I did offer the 2500k with mobo combo for $280 but the motherboard is out of stock and I think a quad core might be a bit overkill - but would provide some future proofing..? Worth the extra $50ish for a non gaming machine?
