Lol they were indeed from the same gif. He liked one half I liked the other.

But I dont think my computer is an overheating issue. I turn it off like 5 seconds after the first boot that works and it wont boot again. Really weird.
 
A friend o' mine, want a new PC, and asked me for advice, though i'm not THE expert (infact, i'm a total noob) so i'll ask here and report back--

He need a machine mainly for video-editing (most important), and play videogames, with a budget of, around 700€ (1000$ ?) no monitor (i guess he already have one).

What should i tell him?

I was thinking about a Sandy bridge cpu (i5 or i7?) and a 6850.. as for the rest i don't know.

Throw in a Corsair CPU, 550w should do it me thinks. 8gb of ram, and whatever case he thinks looks best.
 
I swear I'm not doing this on purpose.

But I too am partial to ASUS motherboards, and PC components in general. I have no reason for it, but the last 2 computers I purchased I looked for Asus mobo and GPUs. They haven't let me down yet.

You can get the bottom cards performance in a CPU you buy today. That's pretty small.
 
Getting pretty close to building my first computer. I'm going to go with a i5 2500k and one of the p8p67 boards when they come back in stock. However I was wondering what the difference was between these 2 sticks of ram:

Looking at getting a mid range priced video card to replace my 4890. Is a 480GTX for $250 a good deal or can I do better.
 
gotta wait until may for a replacement from asus -_-, even though most retailers in the UK will be getting stock in less than a week. basically giving the finger to initial buyers and wanting to resume sales. bastards

It's not all bad though. Video cards today are all using 2 slot coolers. Older video cards, although small, were loud as hell.

Really though, cases and PSUs have grown to accommodate higher powered video cards, which is why you're seeing these beats on the market today.

I'm not 100% sure why, but newer video cards also have a ton of space dedicated to VRM modules...I don't remember this from old cards.

Asus, Gigabyte, or MSI P67 motherboards that fits your needs (SATA ports, PCI-E slots, etc...).

edit: was going to put a build together, but it looks like almost all P67 motherboards are out of stock at the moment on NewEgg.

Currently running a 280GTX in my build, but I have a 470GTX sitting here doing nothing. Is that even an upgrade? My thinking would be that it's a slight downgrade, but I'm not totally sure.

As far as the rest of the build it's an oldie. C2Q2.6Ghz, 680i MB, 8Gigs of DDR2.

I think a GTX470 is much more powerful.

We're comparing the upper tier of cards here. High end video cards have gotten much bigger (see 8800GTX vs 6950 above).
 
Thinking of upgrading my PC a bit but have a question about video cards.

I don't do much PC gaming but when I do I want the best experience possible...in other words if I see screen shots of something I want to see that on my screen.

I know my processor is pretty old (AMD Phenom II quad OC'd to 3.6) but it seems lately that cpus aren't really used that much..especially since most games don't take advantage of more than 2 cores anyway.

So I have 2 questions:
1. Would it be worth it stick with a mediocre CPU and put all the money on a new vid card or divide it equally?

2. Which would be more beneficial? Grabbing a single mid-range ($150-200) card or SLI two lower end cards ($50-100)?

A) Your processor isn't mediocre
B) You go for the midrange card, a Nvidia GTX 460 or an AMD 6850 for that price range

Agreed. That Phenom OC'ed to 3.6 is not going to be holding him back in many games at all.
 
Apologies if this is a stupid question, but after reading the thread I'm under the impression that the only problem of upgrading a video card to an old equipment is that you don't get the max potential, but is not like it's not going to work, right? I ask because after my card fried I was afraid I had to change it all at once and I don't have the money. I have an intel quad core q6600 and only 2Gb of ram. But if I can use a 460 or maybe a 560 (plus a new psu of course) for now it would work for me, until I get enough to upgrade the rest. or would that be a bad idea?

It's not exactly that old components don't allow you to use the max potential...honestly it depends on the game. If a game is heavily GPU bound, your CPU is unlikely to make much of a difference.

A Q6600 is still decent. If you have the potential to overclock it, you should. That 2.4GHz CPU can go to 3.0-3.6GHz, with proper cooling.

RAM might be a bit of an issue...some games take almost 2GB on their own nowadays.

What's your current PSU?

Oh I see, thanks for the info. I'm not sure about the actual reference of the psu, but I'm almost sure is a generic one, the brand is called "ISO" or something like that, and it does say "output power 300W" which from what I've read is insufficient for most modern cards. I don't live in the US so I don't have easy access to the brands I've seen named in the thread, but I could look out for them in the local shops, maybe I can find them.

As for overclocking, it actually scares me because I know nothing about it, but if it's recommended I'll look a guide into it.

What I'm doing as soon as possible is getting more ram for sure.
 
Thanks for the tip IchigoSharingan but I don't have a microcenter near me either lol. I did browse their website for deals though...oddly enough 90% of them are in store only as well.

Some good ones though..hehe.

My brother lives a few miles from one, I may have to have him do some shopping for me ;P
 
On that $600 rig outlined in the OP, could I just upgrade the card to the 1 GB version of the GTX 460 and still use all the other parts (are all the parts still compatible?).
 
so i did a little test recently, i had to sell my xonar essence st because it blocked my 2nd graphics card fan and buy the stx pci-e version and slot it above my upper graphics card. i was left without a soundcard of my own for a week or so, so of course i tried out the onboard on my p67 board which is some realtek HD thing and yeah absolutely not to my surprise at all it sounded terrible and has a complete lack of volume and clarity, borrowed a little £50 xonar dx from a friend and the difference was immediately noticable, then i put my stx in and it was back to what i expect from a sound device. it's not like i'm using some ultra high end hd800's or anything either just some sennheiser ie8 iems

i've just often seen it being said in the past in these threads that soundcards are obsolete or not needed which i always questioned but after my onboard experience i know for a fact that's wrong (yes i realise coax out to some dedicated equipment is better but i want a nice, neat internal solution)
 
They're not needed for 95% of the population here. I am an audiophile and use an amp with good headphones. I appreciate the difference in between my onboard Realtek and my amp, but the differences are minor, to be perfectly honest with you (though the difference are quite noticeable with my K702). I also tried the Asus STX with my Sennheiser PC 350...it seemed to add a bit more lower end and control, but it didn't dramatically transform it.

As a guy who just recently upgraded to a Xonar DX soundcard, I'll generally agree with you. However, a *lot* of people including myself use an optical out. I still do for my ~7 year old Klipsch speakers that have their own amp/control center. It did make a very significant difference in how my headphones sound, and I don't think I'd be able to go back because of it.

Worth it. SATA III is bandwidth that it can use, not a speed at which the drive operates.
 
OK, I have a dumb PC gaming question...but don't know where else to ask it. Anyways, my old graphics card blew several months ago (geforce 8600), and I recently bought a Radeon 5670 1gb card, which should be a nice improvement from what I read. Now I dont play that many PC games. Probably the newest ones I play would be Company of Heroes and Red Alert 3, @ 1600x1050. Would like to check out some other newer ones as well.

So while upgrading my card, I bought a new case to improve air flow and cooling (worried that heat blew my 8600) and a new PSU. I didnt see the improvement I was hoping on Company of Heroes, and I was wondering if I need to upgrade my motherboard and processor to realize the improvements of my card as well? I was planning on doing that later this year anyways, but may bump it up depending on recommendations here. Anyways, I have a stock gateway motherboard (not sure of exact specs) with an Athlon 64 X2 2.4 ghz dual core, and 2 gb ddr2 ram.

So whats your advice GAF?
