So it begins.

PM me when you're ready for water blocks ;P

:)

well now looking around I also notice the PCB showing on my GPU looks ugly. so a trip to buy some plexiglass is now in my future.

and im thinking im gonna grab enough to cover the side of the drive bays as well....

If I keep my old Phenom II X3 720 BE, what can I overclock it to so it doesn't bottlenext the 7850 I am going to buy

No matter what you do it's going to bottleneck. CPU limited things will always be limited by CPU, GPU limited things will always be limited by GPU.

Just want to be extra sure here, are you saying that there are some risers behind the motherboard where motherboard holes didn't line up for screws?
or that the risers that didn't line up were removed?

I left the additional risers in so, yes there are still some risers in there under the motherboard that aren't doing anything. Should they have been removed?

So I did quite a bit of searching using the pcpartpicker site, and for what I'm looking for I'm not sure if there is anything better I could find in my price range. Monitor needs to be 1080p, have HDMI, and the best color I can find in the price range. It's for gaming so no matter how good the color is I cant go with any IPS monitors due to response time.

ASUS VS Series VS238H-P Black 23"

ASUS VS Series VS247H-P Black 23.6"

Does anyone know of any better deals or monitors in the same price range? I'm seriously desperate to replace my blurry, washed out, low rez monitor so really even one of these monitors would be a huge upgrade. But if there is a better option I'm all ears!

yeah. remove the motherboard and pull them out. they can short it out and prevent it from starting up. hopefully it didn't outright kill it.
count the available mounting holes on your motherboard, make sure the number matches with how many risers you leave in, and then make sure you also use the same number of screws.

I got my graphic card today, but the seal of the box was broken. Since i've had issue getting the card home, the tracking didn't work, no one seem to knew where the card was and of course the open seal, i'm a bit worry someone switched the card or something.
NCIX want me to test it. How can i test it to make sure everything is fine?

Thanks for your help!

Those are the best prices those two monitors tend to go for.

Whichever is cheaper.

Yeah.

If you are looking at those two because of the deals I saw today, go with the m500. Around $120 no rebates while the Intel is $160 with a $30 rebate.

went ahead and bought the m500. very excited, never had an SSD before! i'm probably going to reinstall windows though which is a bit disappointing, but oh well

No what I was asking was if there are better monitors in the same price range. With CPU's and videocards its relatively simple to know or find out which is best. I really have no idea when it comes to monitors though.

Time to start the good old troubleshooting.

Make sure the front panel wires are correctly plugged in. Does the hard drive start? The fans?

:dammit dp:

Sorry for the slow reply but just having a crack at getting it working now. Nothing starts up - no fans, hard drive or anything. The only thing that appears to have power is the light on the case. Is it probably just the 4 little pins from the case that connect to the motherboard? I didn't have one of those adapters to connect them up so had to do it manually and thinking I may have messed that up?

As a start I'm just going to disconnect every wire then try hooking it all up again. If I can't get this working by Tuesday some kids Christmas is going to be ruined :/

Sisters laptop died today and I've put a desktop build together. It's just for general use: school (word etc), internet and movies/music. Just the basics. It also has to be easy to move around (college < - > school).

This is what I've got so far. I'm trying to keep it cheap, but with a nice performance for some years. I will use onboard grfx. (I'm not sure about the quality of the PSU):

Edit: Is the BitFenix Prodigy M is the newest version? If yes, I will go for that one.

Is there anyway to make HDMI out display 2 on a gtx680. It keeps thinking my TV is monitor 1, which is not the case. I usually just duplicate but right now I want to have a video running on one while I just hang out on the other but its really getting my goose.

Oh, I had to apply the settings before I could select "make this my main monitor" lol.

Oh god and now everything is at 60hz. I'm gonna puke.

Got my 212 EVO finally! Tweaked a bit with the overclocking settings and it looks like I can't get my system stable unless I disable the Intel C-States, which I have no idea what they do.

Those are usually for the front case ports and buttons. Usually, it's something like : 2 pins for the reset switch, 2 pins for the power switch, 2 pins for the power LED and 2 pins for the HD activity LED. These are usually in one specific section of the motherboard. Each pins pair has one negative and one positive.

Use your motherboard manual to locate where you need to connect them.

I want the inside of my case to be crazy.
On the outside its tiny and black and aluminum, and then when you take all the panels off they'd be like a mindfuck explosion of splattered color.

its basically a vinyl sheet with a adhesive side. but for tricky curves and the like you can heat it up and stretch it to fit

Thanks for any tips and advice fellow GAFers. First PC build in 10 years is up and running and I am breathing a hige sigh of relief!

The PC isn't for me - it's for a colleagues son for Christmas. Just wondering what I should install on it to get him as close to being fully setup as possible? There is no optical disc drive so although all of the parts came with various install CDs I can't actually use any of those. I've installed the Wireless LAN adapter and the latest version of the AMD Catalyst software (is that the right thing? I have NVidia in my laptop so not sure what I should be getting there)

Any other bits I should try to install for him? The motherboard came with a CD but when I look on the website I can't see any drivers or anything of that nature

Finally - is there anything I can try on the machine to test out the GPU before I give it to him? Any free games available that would put it through its paces (HD 7870 2GB)? Don't really want to link my Steam account to the PC just to try a game out. Any sites selling a power hungry game cheap at the moment that doesn't use DRM/Steam? Failing that, are there any free benchmark tools I could try?

Thanks again for all the help so far everyone. Really appreciated. Such an awesome, helpful community in this thread. This build has been a really interesting re-learning experience for me and it's hopefully a precursor to building my own rig in the near future so I'm sure I'll be back for advice again!

That's what I thought at first.

Then a vice, a drill press, jigsaw, circular saw, paint gun, and dremel later . . .

Board came in today. I'm not too sure about the SupremeFX audio on the Maximus Impact...I want to say it sounds to me like a distinct step down from the Xonar Essence, but I can't tell if that's because of hardware reasons, or because the Xonar had a better equalizer that could generate a wider sounding soundstage with headphones. The SupremeFX just uses the Realtek equalizer, and it has non-existent options for headphones and hardly any for equalizing. I may have to get a DAC for full satisfaction...it sounds tinny and congested right now.

Anyways, I'll post pics tomorrow of the build, can't get good lighting right now.

Woot! My 780 Ti Classified changed to preparing for shipment. Maybe I'll get it by Christmas. Will be great to use it for some of these Steam sale games.

Edit: It's in stock at Amazon for now if anyone is interested.

Dota 2 is fine, you can also download 3DMark if you want. Original Crysis is still a very good shooter and should be cheap or bundled with Warhead. Metro 2033 should be very cheap as well. FarCry 3 is $7.50 right now as well.

On my Gene I think my Xondar DGX is better, but it's hard to tell. I have to use the Xonar for my mic input though.

Any advice in the 150-175 (?)ish range ?

like i said 1680x1050 is great for me atm

At that price range it doesn't really matter. Things are kinda screwy right now. Normally AMD is the go to for the low price range, but the mining craze has driven all of the gaming level cards through the roof. So maybe you'll be lucky and find a 7850 (there are no nvidia cards in that price range). Or you could maybe find a used 570, 560 TI, 670 or 660 in close to that range.

Or save up $250 and get a 760 which will last a good long while.

Good luck.

Oh great...now that I have my windowed side panel, it has come to light that one of the fans on my 7970 isn't spinning...wonder how long it's been like that.

Ugh, I think I'm about to become acquainted with Sapphire's RMA process.

Edit: Near as I can tell, everything is connected up the way it should be. The first fan (which is spinning) is connected to the second (which is not spinning) which is connected to the PCB. I don't think it's intentional (to cut down on noise) because even during Furmark, only the one fan is spinning. Funny thing is, I always run MSI Afterburner and the temps never seemed out of whack, although the card did get super loud in Payday 2.

Edit 2: And thus continues my long line of GPU-related bad luck:
- Broke a 8800LE applying thermal paste (scratched the die I guess?)
- Sold a 8800GTS, buyer promptly bricks it with an overaggressive OC
- Broke a 4870 re-installing stock cooler (scratched the die again...)
- Exploded two chokes clean off the PCB of a GTX 260 (Swiftech "full" coverage heatsink designed specifically for this card didn't cover them...)
- The current 7970, with the borked fan

- GTX 570 - Actually this one survived and found a new home...haven't heard anything back from the buyer, so I assume it's alive and well
- 9600 GSO - This one is still alive as well...low end card that's in a semi-dormant HTPC

(Coincidentally, both cards that I managed not to break in some way are ASUS ones...)

Sorry to dig this back up, but I inquired about upgrading my current rig (for the first time) not too long ago, and I've finally gotten some down time to tackle this.

My original post was as follows:
About two years ago I purchased a pre-built PC from Ibuypower.com, and it's been the best gaming investment I've ever made. As we approach the next generation of consoles (and with it, the next generation of console ports), I've been itching to upgrade my computer for the first time. I currently have a GTX 560 Ti w/ 1GB dedicated RAM, an Intel Core i5 2500k 3.30 GHz processor, and 8GB DDR3 general RAM. I've been using a 720p monitor for gaming since I got the rig, and it's served me well. But...

I now have a 1080p monitor, soon to be joined by a second for a dual monitor setup. And with some holiday money floating around, I figured it's the perfect time to upgrade. Let me preface this with the following: I have absolutely no experience with internal computer hardware, so this entire process will be brand new to me. I've done some research, and the two components I'd like to upgrade (RAM and Graphics) are relatively painless to do, so I have a little confidence at least. I've already purchased the RAM ( I know my motherboard supports it, researched that already) bringing my total RAM to 16GB.

I also am looking to purchase a GTX 770 w/ 4GB dedicated RAM, but I don't know if my setup will be able to handle it. Will my CPU cause issues with my future setup? I'd be grateful for any help in the matter, and If any further information is required, I'd be happy to give it. Thanks!

Thanks to the very helpful people here, It was determined I needed to overclock my i5 2500K processor after installing an additional cooling device. If I were to do that, my rig would handle the transition perfectly and I'd be getting the maximum amount of performance out of the hardware.

I've purchased the RAM, and it's here waiting for it's time to shine. However, before opening my case for the first time (yes, really, the first time) I figure the interior will require some dust removal. I have no idea how to tackle internal cleaning, although I'd like to think I'm not a moron in that regard. I've heard of using a can of air,but I don't know where I'd acquire such a thing, or how to even go about cleaning with one. I'll also need something like an anti-static wristband to prevent electrical damage to any components while I fit the cooling system, GPU and RAM into the case.

I'd also like to inquire about the cooling system. I've done my research, and found my case model here. I don't know what kind of cooling system I'm going to need, or if it will even fit in that case. If the model type above gives enough information to make a judgement on that, I'd love to know.

Sorry for the wall of text...I'd just like to learn this stuff so I can tackle at least cleaning my case and installing the RAM this week. If anyone could assist me with this, I'd be incredibly appreciative!

Small question about thermal paste residue, is it okay if the border around the gpu looks like this?

I know some of it is from the alcohol but I can't seem to get the rest of the TIM with cotton swabs. Some of the initial paste from the stock cooler had spilled over so I assume that this will do nothing? And I don't have a non abrasive cloth at the moment for a better clean.

Here's some more pictures of the disassembling.

No idea what it was. Just unplugged every single wire and started again from scratch, plugging them all back in. Something somewhere must have been loose because it worked first time. Glad I had to do it really as doing the wires a 2nd time gave me the chance to tidy them up a bit and run as much as possible round the back of the case

There's no need to remove the residue on the capacitors/around the gpu, so it's better to leave it like that and avoid touching the caps.

Okay, thanks! I tried removing a bit with just cotton swabs but I didn't bother with them too much. And since I was just using isopropyl alcohol, they should be fine.

I love the look of the EVGA ACX cooler as well but I don't understand why the latest MSI Twin Frozr of Gigabyte Tri Cool Coolers perform better than it with comparable cards, even though with MSI and EVGA, they seem to looks less/comparably bulky, especially the MSI one. Design perhaps?

Any ideas? just out of curiosity.

So unfortunately, I think I got some bad luck with my water block packaging and got sent the wrong screw that would be used to screw the block onto the motherboard. Here's a picture:

And because of this error, I can't continue working on the block and will have to delay the completion of my rig even more than I already have. I'll contact EK but I think I'll probably just have to go to a hardware store and find one. Fingers crossed that I can.

Looks like the screw is broken off at the thread rather than it being the wrong one. But you could also try the store you got it from, maybe they are willing to help out (they should imo).

Aww that sucks. From my limited experience (installed one EK CPU block), it looks like they only included 3 x screws for LGA-115x socket. I hope you get it switched soon.

EDIT: Max is right. It looks more like a damaged screw.
