Going with 780 SLI or R9 290x Crossfire would probably be overkill for 2560x1440, right? Friend found more money for her PC build and is enamored with the idea, but I can't help but think it's throwing money away at that point versus just a single 780Ti or R9 290x.

Ok, I really need your help here people, I keep getting the deaded Blue Screen of Death or BSOD when streaming video, and it's random.

It ONLY happens during gametrailers or youtube....and playvid...which might be a pornsite.

I had my PC running with no BSOD's at all, added my GPU last week and it's only been happening since.

The error I get is 0xA0000001 and the program who crashed claims the driver crashing is atikmdag.sys

HELP!

It sounds like it's my new GPU, however I can play games non stop all day, like 3-4 days ago I played for ...maybe 10 hours straight on my day off. No issues at all.

The Radeon R9 290X is finally starting to drop in price, and performs really well at resolutions above 1920x1080. The PowerColor PCS+ AXR9 290X is an amazing card and it's $569.99. I usually stay away from PowerColor, but it seems they produced extremely well built R9 290 & 290X cards with their PCS+ line.

Note: This is a triple slot cooling solution.

Diminishing returns, but not a bad way to go. If you look at benchmarks, it's clear that getting solid 60 FPS at high settings with one card will require some sacrifices in image quality. For example, in Crysis 3 the Ti barely gets 60 FPS average which means it's dipping well below that. While two 780s cost more than one 780 Ti, the performance per dollar is better, and there's some perf headroom in case upcoming games raise the bar. If nothing else, it can be spent on good AA in existing games.

Okay, so I've picked out some parts for my new build. I need some feedback, so I'm hoping you guys can help me out.

Is this on a fresh install? Just uninstilling previous drivers with the control panel is not enough.

This is a proper uninstaller for AMD drivers (it's not perfect either, but works well enough in my experience):
http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/AMD-Clean-Uninstall-Utility.aspx

Not sure what's a good uninstaller for Nvidia drivers.

I didnt want to do a fresh installed cause i have a lot of things to transfer if i do. I will see if i can do a fresh install today, but if the problem continues what would should i do?

Even though I really like EVGA, I would take a look at the Gigabyte GTX780 GV-N780GHZ-3GD. I think it's the fastest clocked GTX 780, and uses Hynix memory.

Reduce the clock speed and check if that fixes it.

Actually, don't even bother-- call EVGA and ask them to replace it. It should be stable at stock speeds.
I didnt see your comment. Might do it thru amazon better ill ask them to send me a replacement while i use this one for now hopefully they say yes.

A couple of observations and questions I have for all of you.

First, at what point will the i5, clocked at 4+Mhz be considered not fast enough for 90% of the games on the market? The 2500K is still looking like it will be fine for at least another 2+ years. I know Devils Canyon is due out soon but are there any games out there where this is really going to be a huge difference maker?

Onto my observations/reviews. I just replaced my 2 MSI GTX 770 SLi set up with an EVGA GTX 780 ti. Everything is running very smooth and fast but the single 780 ti is actually louder than the 2 GTX 770 cards. The 780 ti runs cooler at about 72C compared to the 83C of the SLi setup but the 780 is really loud.

Also, I got a replacement panel for the Qnix 1440P screen that I bought that died 3 days after purchase. The new screen is PERFECT. BLB is gone, there are are no spotches anywhere, no stuck pixels, and everything looks great. The glossy screen is nice but EXTREMELY reflective. I had to turn the backlight down on my keyboard bcause I can see it in some games.

Nope. If you want to run max settings or close to it, you will need SLI or CF to maintain 60fps @ 1440p.

You don't really need a fresh install.

This display driver uninstaller seems to work with AMD and Nvidia drivers.
http://www.guru3d.com/files_details/display_driver_uninstaller_download.html
Uninstall the Nvidia drivers and the AMD drivers (if your previous GPU was AMD) and install the latest drivers. Run the uninstaller even if you have already uninstalled with control panel.

Seems like a driver problem rather than GPU itself causing problems. Try the driver uninstaller above and install the latest drivers.

If that doesn't help just turn off hardware acceleration in flash. By right clicking a youtube vid -> settings -> untick the hardware acceleration box.

Just to clarify...if I'm only planning on using my PC to play WoW, Crusader Kings II, Europa Universalis, the Total War games, and some other games that I just can't find on consoles - would the $560 Good-Very Capable machine in the OP be a good choice?

If a game is coming out on consoles as well as PC, at this point in time I'm planning on just getting it on consoles.

So, would the $560 machine be able to run the games I'm interested in?

Anyone?

This is my first time looking at building a PC - never made one before and never posted in this thread before. If I'm doing it wrong, I apologise :(
I've had someone put together a build on PC Part Picker, and I just wanted to run it through you guys and let me know if it was ok first.

http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/1VGU2

CPU - AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor
CPU Cooler - Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler
Motherboard - Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 Micro ATX AM3+ Motherboard
Memory - Kingston HyperX 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Storage - Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card - Asus Radeon R9 270X 2GB Video Card
Case - Zalman Z5 Plus ATX Mid Tower Case
Power - Corsair CX 500W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply
Optical Drive - Samsung SH-224DB/BEBE DVD/CD Writer

For £490. ($815?)

What kind of performance can I expect from this, and are their any decent improvements to be made for a little bit of extra cash?
Thanks for your help, I'm sorry for my amateurism, completely new to this!
(Going to get someone else to build for me :p)

edit: I'm as dense as they come, fixed it.

Worth getting it? Do you think this will last me 4 years or so?
I'm not sure since I don't live in the UK. However I'm not a fan of reference coolers on GPU's (Nvidia's high end is decent though). Going by current exchange rates that card would be 180 euro and you could get a twin frozr for 20 euro more or a DCII for 22 euro more in the Netherlands. Which are a lot more appealing to me.

Using a power supply to play DVDs? That sure sounds interesting. ;p

Currently have this mobo:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131668

paired with this GFX card:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131484

paired with this CPU (which I know has got to be bogging down my games):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103704

already have a 120gb SSD for my Win7 installation and 8gb DDR3 memory
looking to upgrade my CPU, what's one of the better CPUs that I can get that would be considered an upgrade from mine and help increase FPS in games and what not? The mobo is def. a little older but there has to be something better than the x4 630

Dude, I'm so new to this I have no idea what sounds silly about that :p

The list you posted has the power supply also listed as an optical drive.

In the PCPartPicker list it is fine.

A power supply does just that, delivers power and is where you connect all your components on for power. You cannot play discs with it.

The best CPU your board supports is a Phenom II X6 1100T

Here is some benches against the i5 2500k
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/203?vs=288

Im not sure if it will still bottleneck a 7870, probably depends on the games you play too, though will be much faster than what you have currently.

No, I am running the 780 TI and so far I can run most games at 1440P. 4K is a different challenge.

Sure, you can "run" games, but we are talking max settings while maintaining locked 60fps @ 1440p. I run SLI Titans, and sometimes, can't maintain that in Crysis 3, Tomb Raider, Metro Last Light and etc.

No worries. :)

What are your goals/aims with your PC? Do you want to play new-gen games, etc? There's a form in the OP, if you fill that out, people will be able to help you better.

Reference Cooler - Usually blower type with blower fan, throw air out the back PCIE part. Not as effective, though the GTX780 cooler is pretty efficient. Good for small build cases where exhausting air outside the case is important.
Nvidia-Geforce-GTX760-reference-cooler-design.jpg

Aftermarket - Usually large heatsink with multiple fans, no control of the exhaust hot air. Much more efficient for the GPU (not necessarily its surrounding components) and generally run quieter.

Budget: £500-£600 UK
Main Use: Rating 2 or 3, play newer games if possible, but mostly for stuff that's out today.
Usage - Only games and internet browsing. Not fussed about DVD's or streaming films or anything like that.
Monitor Resolution: Would be happy to play at 720, 1080 if it works well. Monitor can do those just fine, don't really need it any higher.
List SPECIFIC games or applications that you MUST be able to run well: 60 fps is pretty important, but I'm not too fussed about graphics, as long as they're "nice enough".
Looking to reuse any parts?: Nope
When will you build?: Not fussed
Will you be overclocking?: Nope

Something like this?

I assumed you have keyboard/mouse/monitor, and could possibly get Windows from the reddit forums.

Other people explained it pretty well, but a reference cooler is basically the cooler designed by Nvidia or AMD. Non-reference coolers are the designed by vendors (some are better than others). Twin Frozr is one of the coolers on the non-reference cards of MSI. DCII is from Asus.

Beware though the other vendors also sell "reference cards".

With Windows XP support ending I have a question about installing a new OS. I have two hard drives. The first hard drive has two partitions (C: and D:) and the second hard drive has one partition (E:). I have Windows XP installed on drive C: and planning to upgrade to Windows 8.1 64 bit. Will I lose all my data in drives C:, D: and E: or will I only lose data in drive C:?

Depends on whether or not you format before installing your new OS. If you format the drive before installing you will lose everything on that drive, but if there's enough free space, you don't need to reformat and your old Windows folder will be renamed to windows.old (user and program files folders will also be renamed.)

You are going to have a hard time running those games at 1080P at max everything. I had GTX 770 sli and even then I coudln't turn PhysX and SSAO up on Metro and get butter smooth frame rates

So, I guess we agree that SLI or CF wouldn't be "overkill" at 1440p, or even, 1080p. That was response to the original question.

Asus P8Z77-I DELUXE
i7 3770 @ 4.2Ghz
Samsung Green 2x4GB @ 2133Mhz
Gigabyte GTX 780
WD 1TB HDD and Intel 160GB X25-M series SSD

Uninstall the Nvidia drivers and the AMD drivers (if your previous GPU was AMD) and install the latest drivers. Run the uninstaller even if you have already uninstalled with control panel.

Thanks for the link I'll give that a try. Amazon was nice enough to send me a replacement so hopefully everythings gets fixed by tomorrow.

Youll find that most games will run near max settings with a rig like that =D
Its also super compact, heres mine, similar with a GTX 780:

I have the same build. Node 304, Hyper 212 evo, and GTX 780. I will NEVER do non-modular PSU in a mini itx ever again. My belief is so strong that I think the SFF builds should be changed lol.
