So what do you suggest? Like I said, I have no idea of which motherboards I need or what the exact specifications to look for.
I might expand to 16 gb RAM some day, so maybe that makes a difference?
Thanks for the quick reply btw!
Is the Gigabyte GA-B85M-DS3H available on the site? That's a nice way to shave some money off. You could use that money to get yourself a newer, nicer GPU!
Building myself. An €300-400 budget was in my mind. Not sure if that's possible.
Which country are you in so I could look on PCpartpicker for you?

kinda useless upgrading to 16gb unless your a video editor/animator. besides ram is kinda pricey right now best to use that money getting a graphics card

Yeah! But when I compare them, the one you suggested only costs 3 euros less than the one my initial setup (66 euros vs 63). So I don't know whether thats cheap or expensive.

Hey guys, hoping to get some advice on this build. Its been roughly 4-5 years since my last build, so any advice would be great. If you see a part that I should swap out, a way to save some money, or anything please let me know.

Budget: ~ $1200 USA
Main Use: 5 Gaming/Streaming/1080 Playback
Monitor Resolution: Hopefully 1080. I need to buy a new one for this build, any suggestions?

Looking to run WoW / Guild Wars 2 / Wildstar at 60+ FPS at high or so. PhysX and other stuff isn't important to me.

When will you build?: Hopefully within the next month or August sometime.
Will you be overclocking?: Not opposed to it, just never have done it.

CPU
Motherboard
RAM
SSD
HDD
GPU
Case
PSU
If you're going to be playing MMOs then you're going to want a nice CPU. Here's what I'd suggest:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($238.99 @ Amazon)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($29.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD3H ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($127.99 @ NCIX US)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($87.32 @ NCIX US)
Storage: Crucial MX100 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($106.81 @ NCIX US)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($58.24 @ Amazon)
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon R9 290 4GB Tri-X Video Card ($389.99 @ NCIX US)
Case: Fractal Design Define R4 (Black Pearl) ATX Mid Tower Case ($99.98 @ OutletPC)
Power Supply: EVGA 600B 600W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply ($59.98 @ OutletPC)
Total: $1199.29

Change 2-3 values in the bios to achieve a ~4.4Ghz overclock on the CPU and you're golden!

Yeah! But when I compare them, the one you suggested only costs 3 euros less than the one my initial setup (66 euros vs 63). So I don't know whether thats cheap or expensive.
Ah definitely stick with it then, it's worth 3 euros!

Belgium.

Edit: I see it isn't on the list. So I would say take Germany.

Hey! So I have been thinking about getting a new PC (for around 700 euros), and this is what I got so far (I still need a monitor and OS, but that is another question):

- Intel Core i5 4570
- Gigabyte G1.Sniper B5
- MSI GeForce GTX 660 Gaming
- 1 TB harddrive
- Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
- 8 GB RAM; Crucial Ballistix Tactical
- Seasonic S12II-Bronze 520W
- Crucial MX100 256GB

plus case and optical drive ofcourse. In total gives 700 euros on tweakers.net (dutch site like pcpartpicker)

What do you guys think? I would use it for medium-gaming (rome 2 total war and Chivalry medieval warfare) and mainly as a side-station for my laptop.

Any improvements/tips?

PS. I dont know if the motherboard and wattage are good or should be replaced. I mainly copied other lists and shifted around

Something like this would probably serve you better tbh.

Are Geforce 740M and Radeon 8850M worth a damn when it comes to laptop GPUs? Is it worth the extra cash to get one of those instead of an HD4000/4400?

Quick question: I'm trying to connect the SATA ports but I'm unsure which I should be using. I can't tell if there is a difference between them. They seem to be labeled SATA6G 1 through 6. So maybe they're all the same and it doesn't matter? I really have no idea. The motherboard is an Asus Z97-A

Hey! Thanks for the list!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isnt that gtx 750 a bit less strong than the 660? And another noob general question: should I go for GPU over CPU or the other way around?

I've put together a couple builds in the past couple week between the Gigabyte Z97 Sniper and the other with the Gigabayte Z97 Gaming 7. Both motherboards are near identical as far as I can tell and both booted right away just fine. The build construction seems solid. Plenty of options in the UEFI bios. My build is the gaming 7 with a single R290 card running well. I've purchased ASrock and Asus mobos in the past and the gigabyte ones seem on par, no better or no worse.

It's kind of why I was leaning towards the Gaming 7. In the end though, I bought the Newegg combo deal because I was issued this morning a $15 Newegg gift card due to an error. I didn't think it would've been issued so fast. I applied it to the deal and got $385, no tax.

So factor that plus a free game of Total War: Rome II and I guess I'm pretty much happy with my decision.

They both connext to your motherboard.

What? No that can't be right!

Oh wait I see, I counted wrong. One end has 24 which goes into the mobo as its the only fit. The other end of the cable has a 18 pin and a 10 pin connecter. They both fit in the PSU but I'm unsure which I should use. Perhaps both?

Yeah I was trying to keep within your budget tbh. You'd probably better spending an extra 50 euro's and getting a r9 270x or do what I just did and pick up a EVGA 670ftw for just over £100 and nearly 2 years warranty remaining ;)

It is a little less strong you are correct but it's a solid card for the power consumption. Personally I feel the best way is get the best processor your budget will allow but I suppose it really depends on what type of games you play & what else you'll be using the PC for.

Load line calibration to "turbo", vcore to 1.200v, multiplier to 44. It's also worth setting the ram to the xmp profile which is simple enough.

I think there are guides in the OP, I'll be able to look up more details later if you need them, I'm not at home now.

Regarding my airflow situation: I actually took two zip ties and affixed a spare exhaust fan I had to the side vent of my case which is right next to the GPU (lol). It is now moving a lot of warm air out of the case, which helps the GPU temps drop faster... however, it is still getting up to 90C. :(

Gaf, any thoughts on this build? I'm planning on using it mostly for some relatively light gaming (a few MMO's, Dota 2, Skyrim) and to really just upgrade my current rig that's still using Windows XP and a dual core processor.

Well I'm just gonna assume I need to connect them both. I guess it's a Seasonic thing. I'm a little unsure about my graphics card though, the msi 780. It has a 6 and 8 pin connection in the front. Do I use them both or just one? My cable seems to be 6+2 connectors, but connecting the last 2 is hard as it seems it's ever so slightly shorter than the 6 connector. Man this is confusing, and I here I was thinking this would be the easy part...

I'd grab the 270. The 660 is effectively a 1.5GB card with the way the memory is handled on it.

Are Outlet PC and Amazon your preferred merchants? I see you've Micro Center and Superbiz listed too. What about NCIX and Newegg? I can see some areas for improvement already, and probably more if we can branch out.

I'm not tied down to any particular merchant. I'd actually prefer to use Newegg if at all possible.

I'd love to hear your suggestions. I haven't built a new rig in six years, so I'm a little lost when it comes to some of this new technology.

I'm really interested in seeing one of the PC part reviewers using the new Pentium Anniversary Edition oced with a 750 Ti and seeing what kind of performance they get for as cheap as possible.

If you can go without the DVD drive it works out at the same price. You can just install Windows with a USB drive, no need for the drive now really.

This build gives you the option to overclock. A ~$25 HSF like the Hyper 212 is enough to get yourself up to 4.2GHz and beyond. I didn't include it as I wasn't sure how flexible you are with your budget.

Fill all connectors. You do use the 6+2 for both. If the 2 are shorter, that means you have the tabs on the wrong side. Slide the 2 from the front of the 6 until they are lined up and held together with the tabs.

There's no button. Some motherboards have a button feature that isn't great. But, you need the K version in order to over clock.

hipbabboom

Huh? What did I say? Did I screw up again? :(
Why did they ever remove the turbo button and the segmented light display LEDs that would tell you your clock speed?

Given the fact that GPU these days are like glorified math co-processors, I wonder if we'll see the return of these older tropes in computing. They were tacky as hell but I like to think it was the most awesome thing now that we don't have it anymore :(

Overclocking is straight forward.

http://www.overclock.net/t/1401976/the-gigabyte-z87-haswell-overclocking-oc-guide

You're realistically changing two values now. You'll get great gains for little effort. It's a better long term investment than a slightly better GPU.

This would be the build with a heatsink

I finally ordered everything I wanted (last week). So far I have the following:

CPU: i7 4790K
Cooler: Noctua NH-D14
Case: Corsair 750D (I know there's no need for a full tower, but I wanted it)
SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 500GB

on Monday I'll have:

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z97X-UD3H
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LP 16GB (2x8)
PSU: Cooler Master V700

and on Tuesday:

GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 780 Ti 3GB OC

Thoughts? I'll be using it for gaming and for some video editing and 3D modeling.

I was thinking about building it and installing Windows and any programs/games I have, on Monday (if I have time) and then just install the GPU when I get it on Tuesday. Or do you think I should wait for the GPU as well, before building?

They exist, just in really expensive newfangled ways. Check out the OC panel that comes with the Rampage IV Black Edition.
