Thinking about going from a GTX 680 to a R290 since I've found deals for them for a little over $250. Worth it?

I would say yeah specially if you sell the 680. it would make for a cheap upgrade.

of course you gotta factor in if that trade is worth losing nvidia features to you and that's more of a personal preference.

Sorry for off-topic again. But this is the temperature in my case. One read by HWInfo64 is too high and another is too low. Anyone has experience regarding this?

Quick question,

Is the ModMic 4.0 worth its price? I think for what I would be using it for, it's quite expensive at $55 including shipping.

I just want a mic for my headphones so I can talk in online games as well as for an occasional Skype call.

The reason I'm asking here is because it's mentioned in the OP.

It is a very good mic IMO. I used to over my Blue Yeti. The 4.0 addresses build issues of the 2.0 and 3.0 and it's a lot more solid without being that much heavier.

I'd love the 2.3 tested model tbh since it was $23, but he said he was trying to get price down as he could :/

Sup

Premise: i donnow shit about how to build a gaming rig or anything like that

Would anyone be so kind to take a look at this http://www.drako.it/drako_catalog/product_info.php?products_id=13810 and see if it's any good? (going pre-assembled for the reason above lol)

Website is in italian but the different pieces are easy to understand at the bottom of the page, much apprecciated!

A bit expensive, but if you are set on buy pre-assembled. Buy this one http://www.drako.it/drako_catalog/product_info.php?products_id=15476 at the same store.

Reasons:

  • More powerful PSU.
  • Faster ram.
  • New, better version of EVGA 970.
  • Bigger SSD
  • Better cooling.

All for the same price.

Worse looking case though, imo and no DVD drive but this is non-essential.

Has anyone here tried using graphene as thermal paste?

A professor at my college is researching graphene-based thermal paste, and she doesn't mind letting me test it on my rig. I'm a little scared though, graphene flakes allow heat to move in a single direction, so I hope most of them decide that direction is cpu-heatsink, and not vice versa.

Try it, worst case CPU runs very hot for a short period of time.

In what state is the graphene?

Only thing to be careful of is not getting it in anything but the CPU heatspreader since it's conductive.

Thanks, that is what I was thinking. Tried googling my mobo's sensors but nowhere confirms whether or not the PCH sensor exists.

Don't need to check, 125 is upper range of 8bit number so it's probably maxing out a variable in the program. -54, well it's impossible lol.

Well true, but there was an instance when it shot to 169. So that is outside of a signed byte and much less than signed unsigned 8 bit or 16 bit.

But I guess there is no point in thinking too much about this. :p

We agreed to talk about it sometime soon, so I don't know the specifics yet, will post about it when I get the graphene/more info.

Thanks for the input!

Woah. Is that supposed to be DP 1.2? I know there have been issues with DP 1.2 providing 60Hz at 2160x4080 on the Dell 17:9 4K monitor, so I'm wondering how this monitor's going to do 144Hz at 1440x3440. By my calculations 60Hz at 2160x4080 is equivalent to 107Hz at 1440x3440 assuming equal bits per pixel.

Assuming backlight bleed isn't terrible, sounds like an awesome monitor to me. Hopefully there's a FreeSync version in the cards as well.

Yo, what's up dudes. I need help and I've got a few questions but I figured I should answer the question in the O.P first.

Current pc: My current pc is from 2010 and is rocking an i5-760 + HD5870 - 8GB of some random brandname ram, and a power supply I've long since forgot. I'm not really looking to upgrade it. Oh and a stupid Gigabyte P75-D deluxe motherboard with the remote control for overclocking which I have never used. Please don't let me make dumb mistakes like that one.

My budget: Upper limit is 2000€, I'd like to stay as far below that as possible while still splurging on a great gaming build though. I'd specifically like to use this store: www.alternate.be because it's close to my house making RMA's etc super easy.

Main use: Gaming + Hobbyist music production. I want this to be powerful and fast, while being as quiet as humanly possible. Basically I'm lazy and just want to hit ultra on my videogames instead of spending hours obsessing over which shadows I could do without. I'd imagine 1080p videoplayback etc is a given.

Monitor resolution: 1080p for the forseeable future. Not going 4k before the content does, 3D still burns.

Specific games/applications: I'm on team green this gen, no longer shall I run a game at 10 fps because physx on the CPU sucks. + I really want a bunch of random debris exploding everywhere in the 6 games or so that support it. I own most of them anyway.

No part re-use - besides peripherals.
Want to build as soon as possible.
Will not be overclocking anything, I never have because I'm lazy and I'd get too obsessive compulsive about doing it if I did.

Now for some questions:

1) I've never built a pc but I really want too - as someone who can identify all the ports/parts on a motherboard and a good 90% of the cables, how difficult is it to build my own? The best I've managed to do so far is installing a coolermaster hyper 212 evo by myself, while everything was in the case (Antec 902 had a cutout so I didn't need to remove anything). That worked out great honestly. I really want to build my own because I'm tired of returning it to a store for servicing, especially because I know they snoop around and I don't need them to see my 450gb mylittlepony porn collection (J/K).

2) I've got a parts list picked out based on mix and matching some stuff from the O.P, I think I've got everything but I'd appreciate some insights/advice. I'd be using it for gaming, audio production (e.g running ableton live), and more gaming. The audio production part comes with the biggest caveat, I need this thing to be as close to dead silent as possible. My 902 + HD5870 is loud as balls and has ruined many recordings up to date. I'm fine with onboard sound for multimedia stuff (surround is a + though) since I'm using an external audio interface to record.

Parts list:

Processor:
Intel® Core™ i7-4790K, 4,0 GHz (4,4 GHz Turbo Boost), 1150 processor FC-LGA4, "Haswell-R", boxed € 369,-

Motherboard:
GIGABYTE GA-Z97X-SLI, socket 1150 € 119,90*
(Asrock Pro4 wasn't in stock, is slightly more expensive - is it worth waiting/paying extra for? - not going sli ever so disregard that option, is there more usb 3.0 or something I'd use on that?)

Memory:
Crucial 16 GB DDR3-1600 Kit,
BLS2CP8G3D1609DS1S00CEU, BX Sport € 149,90*
(I'm super clueless here, the guide doesn't state anything either so please feel free to tell me if I made a bad decision).

GPU:
GIGABYTE GV-N980G1 GAMING-4GD € 649,-*
(This is the fastest shit I can buy right now right? - I figured pairing a gigabyte card with
a motherboard from the same brand was smart. What's the quietest/coolest thing I can buy?)
List to all 680's in my preferred store. Would it be better to save myself 50 and go with one of the 599€ options?

HD:

Crucial MX100 CT256MX100SSD1, 256 GB SSD € 114,90*
Western Digital Blue, 1 TB € 57,90*
(I kinda want more TB's but I don't know shit about harddrive speeds so I didn't diverge from the OP)

Power supply:
Cooler Master V750S, 750 Watt
Zwart, 4x PCI-e, Kabel management € 119,90*
(I imagine this is the 750 the OP is talking about, If I'm wrong please let me know because I know nothing about power supplies.)

Case:
Fractal Design Define R5 Black € 109,90*
(I just want a quiet black box with no distinctive features, I hope this is that if I'm wrong let me know) If the case is a super difficult build let me know. The corsair air the op recommends kind of looks tacky in the pics and after my 902 with blue sidefan I really don't want tacky or extra casefans - or anything really.) If there's an easy to build, quiet case with external dustfilters I'm missing please let me know.

Extra's:

Cooler Master Hyper212 Evo, Actieve CPU koeler € 34,99*
(was thinking of a corsair h60 but this is cheaper and I've got experience with it)
Samsung SH-224DB/BEBE, DVD-brander € 19,99*
(to install windows and burn the odd cd/dvd)

Total cost: 1.764,38€

3) Anything I forgot that you saw?

Thanks for the incoming help NeoGaf Homies, you're all starchildren to be in my book.

Asked this in the 970 thread, thought it would be better to ask here. I was gonna build a PC with an i7-4790k and a 970. Would it be worth the little bit extra to go with an i5-4690k and a 980 instead?

I think it got lost when I asked before so forgive me for asking again.

I need to transfer a windows 7 license from a laptop of mine that is on its last legs to a new pc that I am building. The license sticker is not really legible any more. Is there an easy way to get the registration code or other information I can use to do this?

Thanks in advance guys.

What does everyone prefer for fan control - hardware or software?

I'm not really loving dynamic software solutions as the fans fluctuate RPM too frequently. I can control CPU cooler (NH-D15) with no issues, right (probably just change a setting in the bios so the mobo doesn't freak out because theres not CPU fan)?

Also, anyone have experience with Case Labs? Worth the money?

Sad to see this as it was epic. What single card in your opinion is the best possible card on the market right now?

I'm partial to the Titan series. I was not a fan of NVIDIA going with 4GB in the 900 series. If we're talking overall, well rounded capabilities of a card, then I'm going to go with the Titan Black. I may be biased though.

You don't have to worry about VRAM at any resolution and it overclocks pretty well.

NVIDIA charged the hell out of us for the card, but I feel like it ended up being a great long term investment with all of its capabilities.

I finally replaced my HDD with a Samsung 840 Evo 1TB SSD.

All the vibrations are gone, the noise is gone. My beast PC is now as quiet as a Macbook (in 2D mode).

I went with a 1TB hard drive and a 240GB SSD.

Kind of wish I just went all out and got one huge SSD. I don't need that much storage, 500gb probably would've been fine.

Really excited, got a Noctua NH-D15 cooler on the way.

Component list is nearly all here now, waiting on PSU and monitor as well. Will post pics when it's together, might be helpful/interesting for some on here.

Yeah, it feels good doesn't it? I'm never ever leaving the land of single card again. Ever. My 780 Ti KPE still providing all the frames I need. Granted, I rarely play AAA games anymore, and despise action-adventure titles for the most part.

I'm glad I did it. It was an ambitious system and it was fun. Got it out of my system. It feels different to just OC single card, turn on Gsync/ulmb and game with the overlay off. I am just really sour on gaming at the moment. 2014 was the worst I can remember for broken games being launched and I got burned bad. Not gonna happen to me again in 2015.

Building yourself is easier than you'd imagine and very rewarding.
I couldn't recommend it enough.

970 makes more sense than 980 IMO
The quietest models are the MSI and the ASUS.
I wouldn't be concerned with MB/GPU brand synergy tbh.

Great, I'm looking forward to doing it. Do you know how worried should I be about stuff like static electricity seeing how my desktop chair is covered in fabric.
970 does seem cheaper, but I saw a few benchmarks and it's like 10 frames+ behind in some of them which makes me wary. Furthermore there seems to be some issue with using the last 700mb of VRAM according to these forums so I'm still thinking 980 right now.

I noticed the asus being quieter, and I'm kind of thinking the MSI Fan shutting off during idle might be exactly what I want for my dead silence requirement but could I not just do the same thing on the other cards via afterburner or something?

Still looking for more input on my build from some of you pro's. I'll link my wall of text post in the hopes some of y'all feel like wading through it for me.
