Probably a good idea to say what kind of budget you're thinking of.

GeForce GTX 1070 performance preview: goodbye, 980 Ti (PCGamer Hardware is made up of the MaximumPC guys)

Initial benchmarks show the 1070 beating the 980 Ti and Titan X in every game we tested. Yes, really.
If you were wondering about Nvidia's claims of beating a Titan X in performance with a $380-$450 GTX 1070, well, we can safely put any concerns of cherry picked benchmarks to rest. It's the real deal.

Since I just built my pc like almost a year ago now, i might as well wait out the ti versions, tempted to buy the 1070 or even the 1080 but i'm just gonna wait out the ti versions instead

You need to come up with clever ways to do cabling in this case, some tips:

Pull the pcie cable slack through the front panel.
Mount the SSD behind the front panel.
Take the 24 pin ATX and 8 pin CPU power around the PSU (between the PSU and the front panel).
Take the fan cabling along the top strut of the case near the GPU.
Make sure slack for front panel cabling is left between the front panel and case. Some can be hidden under the motherboard.

I have some pics I can share tomorrow on how to make this very clean.

CPU may not do 4ghz if it's a bad chip or just not got the right settings.

Make sure the 212 fan is blowing out towards the rear fan. Rear fan should be exhausting hot air.

Either way, wait for a non ref design GPU.
Great tips. I just kind of went by the seat of my pants. It was also my first time building a PC. I'd love those pictures. Thanks!

Is there any easy, visual way to see how the fans blow? I mean, I could put my hand in there and feel. But I'm wondering whether anyone has a good tip, other than burning newspaper.

So I ended up buying a new SSD and doing a fresh install of Windows. Hopefully that takes care of the BSOD errors. *knock on wood*

So anyone splurging on broadwell-e today? Supposedly Intel is releasing them today, right?

Seems weird to drop them on memorial day, but eh. Haven't seen them pop up on newegg yet though.

The case fans are installed correctly from the factory atleast.
The hyper 212 fan has an arrow on the fan shroud.

So I just got an i7 6700k along with a NZXT x31. I've noticed that when idling on the desktop and doing simple tasks my CPU temp hovers around 20-30 but can spike for a second to 50 then right back down to the 20's. When running prime95 it maxed out at 70.

Are these spikes to around 50 for a split second normal?

Also after playing an hour of Fallout 4 with realtemp running in the background, the cpu hit a maximum of 71!

Are these temps normal for skylake or what?

So I decided to run the Small FFT test in Prime95 as opposed to the Blend test i ran earlier. The temp shot up to 91! I almost had a damn heart attack! Is this normal??!?!?!

Ambient temps are very cool 15ish. It's winter.
(Everything is running at STOCK)

Thanks.

For water cooled 91 seems a little high. The rest is normal. On air (Hyper Evo 212) I'm seeing 28-35 idle and 78-85 under full load. Check your voltage in Bios, remember temp is usually proportionate to voltage. At stock clocks you should be good with ~1.3.

Can I just say what a good investment going from a 4670k to a 6700k has been for me gaming at 144hz. Playing GTA V saw my CPU usage stay under 60% the whole time, meaning far fewer dips and higher overall fps.

Don't judge me on this question please.
So I have a laptop that I want to upgrade the ram on. It already has a 4gb stick in their and I want to add another 4gb stick for a total of 8. Would it be alright to do this? I'm asking because I want to buy one from crucial and I don't know what the stock ram in my laptop is. Is it alright to mix and match between brands? or should I just buy 2 4gb crucial sticks?

I made a stupid mistake.

Just realized my board does not have Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

First PC and everything.....

Are these things good?

All normal. Skylake has this tendency to spike temps. Never experienced it on any CPU before. Prime95 with AVX is going to heat it up a lot especially with small fft. Check your vcore under load in CPUz and that'll explain it most likely.

Mobo may also be Turbo'ing all cores and raising vcore causing higher temps too.

From a review
The only True comparison we have is against our own CPU Cooler of choice the Noctua NH-U12S and in comparison the NZXT X31 is surprisingly similar in performance.

So basically performance will be of a mid range air cooler, so your results are expected.

Ok to mix brands, but best make sure they're the same speed. RAM sticks of different speeds will run at the freq of the slowest stick, so no sense in spending more on DDR3-2000, say, if you're running 1600Mhz RAM.

Uss CPUz to identify your ram and get something similar. Atleast find something with the same speed and timings.

Alright, thank you. :)

And here I've been reading that everything over 1600Mhz on Sandy Bridge is diminishing returns..

Only recently games have been taking advantage of higher ram freq.

Swapping motherboards and CPU, so I assume I'll need a new Windows install? Is here anything to do to make that simpler? It's Windows 10 so will there be any issues with a new MB and the Windows license?

Will it even boot up on the old installation or will I need a USB stick with an installer on?

I just did the same (almost, still have the same CPU), stayed on the same chipset and it did boot, but that's about all it did correctly...

I had to reinstall Windows 10, didn't enter a key, and Windows is still activated, so you might get away with it.

Out of curiosity, why do you recommend the 1070 over the 1080?

- You are playing in 1080p.
- it has much better value than the 1080. (38% lower price for 25% less performance)

If you are going to get a higher res monitor and want absolutely the best regardless of price then sure, go ahead and get the 1080.

edit: I fail at math

Great, thanks! Thought as much, but looks like I am bound to second hand. Never bought a used CPU ;) Would 270€ be a good price?

I see them sell at £150-170 on eBay.
CPU is the most resilient and reliable part to buy 2nd hand after a PC case.

Hey guys. Im planning to finally exchange the heart of my PC for a few more modern components.
Currently iam running a 2500k but plan to go ahead and buy a 6700k.
In a different forum, people said "keep the 2500k or buy a 6600k max", but looking at digital foundrys videos regarding the 2500k it seems obvious the cpu is showing its age.

For now i would like to keep playing at 1080p and got a R9 390 as GPU, which will most likely be sold and replaced by a 1070 once they are available in custom models.

So I guess it all comes down to
6600k vs 6700k and which other components?
500-600 Euros would be ok, since iam selling my current components for 200.

Oh yeah i also oc'ed my ram to 1866 Mhz, so i could get 2133 Mhz ram, but i dont know if that would make that much of a difference.

Got one for 220€ :) I think that's fair and I had some money left. My Vive will be pleased too, even if I did not encounter huge bottlenecks yet.

i was gonna build a pc with an i7-6700K (or 7700K if it comes out within the next year), 16GB DDR4 3200, and get the 1080 Ti when it comes out. however it might be just out of my budget assuming the 1080 Ti will cost £700/750. A 1080 is £600/650 here in the UK. also i'd need to buy a 1440p monitor as i feel 1080p would be just a complete waste with this kind of performance. if i'm going to have to spend ~£2000 on a whole new set up then i'd much rather wait until i can do 4K 60fps for that price (including monitor) and on a single card.

i'm thinking of building a PC with a more modest improvements to hold me off until i can buy a 4K PC. my budget is probably gonna be about £1,000 and will build no sooner than Feb '17.

my current pc is an i5-4590, 16GB DDR3 1600, R9 290 4GB and i will look to keep playing at 1080p but if i can downsample more games from 1440p then great. i can't decide if i should:

A. just replace the GPU with an R9 480/490. i might be tempted to get a 1060/1070 if prices are reasonable.

or

B. replace motherboard/cpu/gpu/ram/buy new windows license and reuse my current case/psu/ssd.

A would obviously be much cheaper since I'm just buying a new GPU. However I'm not sure if my CPU will be able to keep up with any new GPUs which brings me to B. if I want to change my CPU i'll need to either get a locked Broadwell CPU as that is all my motherboard will support or i will need to get a new motherboard/ram/windows license along with the CPU/GPU.

basically i just want to know if my CPU is good enough to last me another couple years and if not then should i go with an unlocked i5 or i7?

That's pretty good. Given the fact that if you do a proper upgrade to skylake it will cost more than triple that amount.

Unless you just have money to spend, I don't see why you need a skylake upgrade. Get an i7 4790K if you really need a CPU upgrade and get a better video card and you are golden. LGA 1150 socket CPUs still have quite a bit of life in them. 4790K (which is what I'm using) is still a beast of a CPU.

Sorry I was thinking a 1000 euros and I'm not going to build it myself it would have to be obviously prebuilt
Edit, Fuck it I'm open to building it myself, is that a good idea bearing in mind I've never done it before and my knowledge of innards is pretty limited

I just went from an i5-2500 to an i7-6700k. I've upgraded computers since the mid 90s with my parent's business so I'm not new to this. However, this new build is giving me so many problems. I'll just list them as bullet points:

**First off, the motherboard upgrade is a Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Gaming 3 and 16GB of Corsair Vengeance LPX (2x8GB). I also have an nVidia 670.**

**Problem One**
-Installing Windows 8.1 and 10 was giving me a "Whea_Unrecoverable_Error" BSOD.
-Reset Windows 10 after it quit booting altogether. I reset BIOS and reconfigured it.
-Windows would randomly boot but typically after waiting a bit. While in Windows, it never BSOD. Only on boot.
-I figured this problem out as being my CPU fan, a Cooler Master V8, is probably too heavy for the board. I flipped the case to the side where the fan is upright and it boots every time. So this brings me to the new problem.

**Problem Two**
-While playing any game like Overwatch, which ran perfectly fine on my 2500, runs smooth for about 30 seconds then drastically drops to around 30fps then to around 15-20 (lowest I saw was 8). Several other games are doing this as well.
-It's not overheating or pushing any load onto the CPU according to task manager (which I kept open), CPU-Z, or GPU-Z. Everything was running at appropriate heat levels.

So with this information, I'm assuming the CPU went bad or the motherboard is busted, or since this stuff is only 3 days old, something wasn't working in the first place. I ordered a new CPU fan (Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO).

-------------------------------------
Do you guys think it's the CPU or the motherboard or possibly the PSU (which, again, was running fine with my 2500)?

I'm looking to buy a used 970 GTX for my bro.

Choosing between the Asus Strix and the MSI Gaming 4G.

How widespread is the Strix's coil whine issue? Significant enough that I should be leaning towards the Gaming G4 (which I own and am super happy with, btw) or not?

I'm asking because I think I can get the Strix for less.

I used to build PCs all the time but i have been out of the game for nearly 10 years at this point. I need some guidance.

I'm looking for a gaming build at the 1000 dollar mark. I will probably wait for a 1070 for a video card.

Halp would be appreciated.

Very doable at that price point and that card- welcome back to the game. Things are largely the same from 10 years ago in terms of actual skills needed to assemble a PC.

I recommend reading the 1st post in this thread for some build sheets around your price point, and using PCpartpicker as a way to organize your builds and do some comparison shopping, all in one spot.

Roccat Kave maybe? It's around 75-80€ if you shop around. No personal experience with it though, I'm strictly a speakers kinda guy :)
Thx, I'll give it a try. I can always send it back to amazon if I don't like it.

The Asus strix and the MSI 4G are very similar when it comes to oc, cooling, performance etc. Both are/were very popular when the 970 came out and rightfully so. They're both good, so pick the cheaper one.
The coil whine issue isn't something that is specific to a certain supplier or to a certain third party design. 970s in general are known to have coil whine, regardless of price point or design. The thing is even if you get a 970 with coil whine you won't notice it in most cases (unless you open your case, play with more than 100+ fps etc.). The chance that the msi 4g has coile whine is as high as the chance for the strix.

So I picked up an ASUS PB287Q last week and I can honestly say I'm not going back to 1080P gaming. 4K is so damn beautiful.

I'm running most of my games on my single GTX 980ti card.
Needless to say I have to put most Dynamic Shadows, Particle Effects, and some other Post Processing settings at low.. while keeping Texture (model and environment) at ultra, wherever possible.

I'm considering purchasing a GTX 1080 but am curious if it's worth it?

I'm trying to squeeze out another couple of FPS while upping the settings on some of my games (really aiming for that 60 FPS 4K dream).

Should I hold out for 1080 ti? Any other 4K gamers out there upgrading to a 1080 from a 980ti?

You're probably right, it's just that I remember there being quite a bit of talk regarding coil whine and the Strix around launch, so I thought I'd ask. It's not a big deal in any case. Thx.

Might run out to micro center today.

I see they have the 6700k for 309. And more discount if i pair it with a motherboard.

Should i dump 309 into an i7 or is an i5 more than sufficient.

Also what is up with AMD these days? They seem to have much cheaper processors than intel with reasonable specs.
